Honestly I had real high hopes for this book & it did not disappoint. The narrative followed Ivar, who was on a remote island and found an unconscious man. That man happened to be John, a church minister sent to evict Ivar. A totally new concept for me & one I really enjoyed. I like the mystery element which was prominent at the beginning & the way in which the narrative unfolded and told the story. I felt tense, confused and heartbroken in such a short span and I felt real things in this book. This is book 9 of the Helen Grace series. I was reluctant to start this one as the last one I read I didn’t particularly enjoy, however it started off really strong and had me gripped from the start. The middle did go a bit flat, and I did find myself skim reading parts of it. I did find it hard to put down, and kept wanting to see how it ended. I guessed the main twist from very early on, so that was a bit disappointing. Overall I enjoyed the book, but it’s not my favourite of the series. Reminiscing the time when I was reading this masterpiece by Sylvia Plath🩷 And this is why I love annotating so much. I have a terrible memory that only remembers how much I loved the book? The details? There are no details! My brain is weird like that. It'll remember the lyrics to all the Taylor Swift songs that I love, but it'll forget all the amazing bits from my favourite books (sometimes actual stuff from my life 🙊 which I'm lowkey thankful for). Annotating helps me remember. And there's a whole system in place to help me do this effortlessly. Color coded tabs, a catch-up sticky note every 50 pages, lots of writing in the sidespace or on a tiny sticky note, color coded highlights and underlining text. And I like to change my system depending on the book that I'm reading. It's almost automatic at this point. Yes it slows down the speed at which I read but I kinda like that too. 🩷 slowing down I mean. Will talk about The Bell Jar in a seperate post because this one turned out to be about my love for annotating lol 🙊

I feel that given the current AI bubble, it gives a great insight into what our future can look like. You see, Klara is an Artificial Friend purchased to keep Josie who has been unwell even though she's just a teenager, some company through her loneliness. The dystopian themes in the book are very subtle and you can actually miss if you're not completely into the book. Which is a possibility given that I've seen mixed reviews for it everywhere. For me personally, I liked Klara's personal journey more than anything else in the book because that was such a fresh take on an AI bot. From her devoting her entire self to Josie, to her romanticising the sunrise and sunset. Klara's innocence is obvious and almost meant to ignite feelings of compassion towards her. Her observations about the human world and human beings creepily accurate (like the quote above for example was quoted by Klara- a literal robot). It was a ⭐⭐⭐✨ read for me. However, it def was a great intro for Ishiguro's work. And thanks to this one I went on to read Never Let Me Go and enjoy it's brilliance. 📖 Book Review 📖 Title - The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen Genre - Domestic Thriller/Mystery Ratings - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5 stars) I have loved almost everything written by this duo and this book was no exception, and is also probably my favourite so far. From start to finish, I guarantee this is a very entertaining read. There are so many twists and turns that you cannot even see the end coming till you are right in it, and flying through the pages. The main characters are a married couple, and a therapist with the most unconventional methods and the story has a dual POV theme. There is so much happening in their lives at every point, and although the plot might seem a bit unbelievable (which is the only reason I am keeping half a star in my ratings), it keeps you guessing in the most brilliant way. Again (because I seem to have read such great books this month), this is another highly recommended thriller. . -Mime . .
📖 Book Review 📖 Title - Sparring Partners Genre - Fiction Ratings - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3 stars) The first thing you have to know about this book is that it is actually a collection of three novellas titled Homecoming, Strawberry Moon and Sparring Partners. I am a huge John Grisham fan, but this book did not quite hit the mark. I was a bit confused with the style of three different stories with no connection or intersection in plot or character. The last story - Sparring Partners was by far the best (possibly because I am a lawyer), and I wished that was a separate novel because the story felt a little too short and rushed. I would have liked to read more about the brothers and their trial when they discovered who the traitor was. My least favourite story was Strawberry Moon - it was very touching but unrealistic in so many different ways. Loved all the questions that the death row inmate asked and his relationship with the teacher, but there was so much left unexplained with this plot. The first story, Homecoming was also very intriguing and I also wish I had gotten more of the story before it ended. This story was also really law-focused and had major potential, but it just did not go anywhere either. As always, John Grisham’s writing was incredible, and he knows how to pick his characters and tell their stories nicely. All in all, it was a good read, but not quite there for me. Each of the stories had potential, but I ended each one feeling very unsatisfied with the ending. 📖 Book Review 📖 Title - Not a Happy Family Genre - Mystery/Thriller Ratings - ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5 stars) In three words, I would describe this book as dramatic, scandalous and quick. My favourite part of Sheri Lapena’s writing is how easy to read her books are. Always an interesting story, and a good mystery to solve. This was a very good read, and I can definitely see myself reading this again in a few years just for fun. The family drama and reading the interactions between the siblings was just as exciting as trying to solve the mystery of who the killer could be. The Merton family characters (including the extended family) were made of the most shady people I have ever read. I don’t believe I have seen characters LIE that much at every turn in any book. There were so many secrets that I lost count of who was lying about what at some point.😂 It was also exciting to figure out who could have committed the crime with every uncovered secret and it reminded me of a ‘Knives Out’ mystery - fun and easy to work through. Book Review 📖 Title - Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo Genre - African Fiction, Historical Fiction Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - 5 Stars Before starting this book, I had heard so many great reviews about how good this book is, but I still went in with average expectations so I would not be disappointed. But whew! Wasn’t I incredibly surprised with how much I loved reading this! I finished this book in less than 24 hours because it was that gooodddd. The book engages all of your senses with a great story and beautiful writing. Everything about this book worked so so well. From the first chapter, you are bound to be hooked. There is no lag or lull in the plot and you simply finish each chapter wanting to know more about Yejide and Akin’s story. I expected to be a little confused with the dual-timelines and POVs, but the chapters are creatively woven in a way that renders this book different and yet still simple. It was also great to explore historical events which were smoothly combined with the story. “The India your parents own is not the same India that belongs to you.” 🇮🇳 I wish I had this book when I was in high school and actively pushing away from my culture. I relate so heavily to the characters and themes in this book (too Desi for the states, too American for India 😓) being a diaspora kid myself. On a lighter note, reading this made me miss the hustle and bustle of India and the street food 😋 I also learned new things about India and the culture! The older I get, the harder it is for me to enjoy YA but Sharma hit it out of the park with The Karma Map. Highly recommend!
Oh wow! @johnmarrs.author has absolutely smashed it with this book. I think this is my favourite book of his so far and without a doubt my favourite of the year so far. Think it’s going to be up there for book of the year! Loved it. The storyline was brilliant, such a simple idea but the way it was told was amazing. I loved getting to know the characters and all the different stories they had to tell. The way it refers to another book The One, I enjoyed that little touch. I found myself routing for certain people, no spoilers! I loved Libby’s character and how she blossomed and stood up to Jack. The ending was so good! Can’t praise this book enough. If you love John Marrs books then you really really need to get yourself a copy of this one. I could definitely see this as a tv adaptation or a film. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ an easy 5 stars. I’d give it more! I’ve been so excited to get my hands on this book as I absolutely loved all C.J Tudor’s previous books. Luckily I didn’t have to wait long as a copy at the library became available pretty quickly. It’s set following 3 different stories. There is a lot of characters to get your head around to start with. The first half was slow, and I felt I was waiting and wondering how it would all tie together. I don’t want to give too much away, but the whole book followed a story line I wasn’t expecting from it. I’m not sure on how I feel about this book. I couldn’t put it down, but it doesn’t fit into the genre I would usually read. I’m unsure on this, I can’t make my mind up if I liked it. I have read so many amazing reviews but for me it’s not been a favourite of hers. 3.5⭐️ I did not think I was going to get this book read in time for book club tonight but I did it! Historical fiction is usually not my jam although I am the one who recommended this to my book club 😬 It’s been on my TBR since I saw it on BOTM because the synopsis was intriguing. Faster paced than other historical fictions I’ve read. Belle’s life as a white passing woman in a very racist early 1900s was fascinating to read about. After all there is some truth behind the fiction which is laid out once our story ends. Educational and thought-provoking. Growing up, The Inheritance Cycle, was by far one of my favourite book series. The world-building by Christopher Paoloni is just stunning. Whenever I get into a reading rut, I turn to Eragon, and once I’ve devoured these four I just need to jump straight into another fantasy book. That’s how I’ve ended up with ‘too many’ books and not enough book cases 😂 I think it’s worth noting that these books were written very early on in Paolini’s career (I believe he was 15(!) at the time of writing). I’m aware there are a lot of people who are not fans due to more obvious threads with other major fantasy worlds (Star Wars and Lord of the the Rings), but personally, when I enjoy something I want more of the same/similar so I’m all for it. Take it with a pinch of salt but give yourself the chance to fall for it. Part 2 - My 2023 to be read! I’ve already started working through some of these! I’ve just finished ‘Legendary’ and immediately picked up ‘Finale’ by @stephanie_garber. Not sure I’m ready to let go of Dante and Jacks yet though 🥺 I’m averaging buying as many as I’ve read and keeping my TBR list at the same level, which is not what I was going for.
