@alexandrukm 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 Mel and I first teamed up together in 2022 (see pics 3&4) where we put down a solid nutrition foundation. She continued on these habits throughout the next year and progressed continuously. Fast forward to Mel having a double jaw surgery in November where she was wired shut for 6 weeks. She was VERY creative in her healing and implement a TON of micronutrients, which showed in her progress (no drinking Ensure here 🙅🏼‍♀️). Her surgeon had noted she was healing very well and impressed with how quickly she was able to be active again. (Nutrition is VITAL in optimal recovery.) he also was very impressed with how well her swelling went down AND that she had only lost 15lbs as a result of the surgery. She had nourished properly. Mel wanted to reimplement a program with Peak to ensure she was eating ENOUGH throughout her recovery and that she was balanced once she could chew again. As most know, after periods of forced restriction often comes a plethora of cravings and overindulging. Mel had none of this. She was excited for steak and broccoli, not candy 🙏🏻 She is still progressing weekly with which types of food she can eat! But Mel has absolutely crushed it. First go around was a huge learning curve, helping Holly manage her PCOS and lose weight. Second time around, we started to implement some carb cycling to maximize her glucose utilization. The Food Basket program is designed to replenish the refrigerator the third week of the month when food supplies and funds are in short supply. Membership is $5 annually. Members may select between produce, meat and non-pork meat orders. A food basket can contain as few or as many meat and produce orders as your household needs. A meat order is $20 and a produce order is $15. Members place and pay for orders at the beginning of each month and pick up their orders on the third week of the month. Being healthy doesn't mean eating only salads and taking 50 vitamins a day. It doesn't mean having no noticeable physical or psychological ailments. It doesn't mean going to yoga, meditating every morning for 2 hours, and drinking 20 cups of water. It means waking up with a positive outlook on the day to come and ways you can fit joy into your life. It means pausing on your walk to listen to the birds sing and take a deep breath to silence your mind. It means being aware of your movements and words to ensure everything is done with intention. It means putting to bed that insignificant unchangeable thing that has been stressing you out. It means not holding onto anger or resentment and accepting that you cannot control what others do. It means valuing yourself enough to silence the hate, internally and externally to love yourself. So today, if you only do one thing, I want you to grab a piece of paper and write down as many things as you can that you do to support your health. It may be as simple as waking up and brushing your teeth. That's enough. Let’s add it all up ⬇️ When you break it down, it is super attainable to get most of the micro nutrients you require during pregnancy through your food as long as you have a healthy appetite and are able to eat regularly throughout the day. All together, your meals for the day could look something like this: Breakfast - 2 boiled eggs with sauteed spinach and cheddar cheese, kiwi Snack - Yogurt with pumpkin seeds Lunch - Arugula salad with chickpeas, red pepper, chicken breast Snack - Carrots + hummus Dinner - Salmon, broccoli + potatoes OR beef, broccoli + potatoes On top of this, individual supplementation would include Iron if anemia is present, folate (first 3 months), and fish oil. (zinc and magnesium are possible additions - depending on your specific diet and stage of pregnancy) A recent article about nutrient requirements during pregnancy stated that “The current recommended daily intakes seem very far from physiological realities and, consequently, overestimate the real needs of pregnant women. Stress. We all experience stress. And our reaction to stress, to a degree, is healthy and essential for survival since it keeps us out of harm's way. But it's the amount of chronic stress that a lot of people experience daily at high amounts that can cause long-term physical and mental damage. You may think you're the healthiest person you know since you only eat organic, don't drink caffeine, and work out 7x a week. But if you are lying in bed every night worrying about the next day at work or stressing about finance, or really anything, you're actually less "healthy" than you think you are. And guess what? Stress is a MAJOR contributor to blood sugar instability and imbalances. As a women’s health professional, I see all the ways that women internalize their health challenges. Putting the blame on themselves…whether it be that their bodies don’t work like they used to or they must not be eating right or that their hormones are to blame. While a part of this is true in that our bodies are always changing across our lifecycle and as we age, we cannot oversimplify the many contributors of why we may be having certain challenges. It is human nature to look for the cause and then find the solution but often it is not so simple. When we look at women’s health from a holistic perspective some of the other things we are considering are: ➡️ What is my mental and emotional stress like currently in my life? ➡️ What tools and practices do I have to build awareness around this stress so that I may be able to better respond to it or reduce it where I can? ➡️ Am I getting enough restful sleep and am I prioritizing it? ➡️ Am I getting enough nutrition to support my hormones and other important body functions like thyroid (metabolism) and digestion (absorption and elimination)? ➡️ How do I view my body? What is my body image and my perception of my body in comparison to others I see? ➡️ What are my expectations for myself? Are they realistic? Are they serving me or hurting me? Often we can be quick to attribute any changes in our bodies or health conditions to one thing like our diet and we want to believe that by following a certain set of rules or a food plan will solve our ills. But it’s just not that simple. We have to consider the whole person and the world we are living in. @tarahoma_ 💥🔥 ‘I can do hard things.’ Purpose in reaching out was to take control of her overall health. Her main health concerns were her weight and her diagnosed high blood pressure - she had also been previously diagnosed with binge eating disorder. She experienced high levels of anxiety, and chronic depression. Her cycle was non-existent. Twelve weeks later, Tara’s anxiety has reduced drastically. While she still experiences some, it’s typically due to a normal stressor - she’s no longer in a constant state of worry. Her mood has greatly improved. Her cycle has returned. She has tried SO many new foods and found ways to enjoy a variety of vegetables. She has not had a single binge episode. ‘Before, I couldn’t walk a mile.’ Her fitness has improved greatly. Her self confidence has sky-rocketed. Her belief in herself and her ability to do hard things is so strong. Tara had lost complete hope for herself, having been told by her doctor the only way she would lose weight was a 900kcal diet and Ozempic. She has regained power through knowledge and HARD WORK. I cannot emphasize enough how hard she worked. She completed all of her training. She communicated about everything. Last night was the first night of the 'Mindful Mondays' series, and I couldn't be more pleased with the results! I joked before we started that at first I was afraid no one was going to come, and 12-year-old Mandy's anxiety was coming out "What if no one comes to my party?!?" but then people started getting tickets and then suddenly it was "Ohmygosh, people are Actually coming!" and so it was a broad range of emotions haha! Other than cholesterol, I don't know if there's a more unjustly maligned food group than carbs. If you ask 10 people which foods they avoid or restrict, 8 of them will say carbs and 3 of them will know why. The other 5 will say that this influencer or this health guru said that carbs are bad. Sadly this is an ounce of truth wrapped in a pound of misinformation. Carbs are not your enemy. They are your body's preferred form of energy. Glucose, the most simple form of carb is the only type of fuel your brain will use. So why do carbs get a bum rap? People equate carbs to sugar and sugar to weight gain, and in this day and age, there is nothing worse than gaining weight. So while yes, excessive carb consumption Can cause weight gain, we need to stop lumping all carbs together. Carbs are not bad. REFINED, PROCESSED carbs are bad. Refined carbs have had all the nutrients and fibre stripped from the grain until what is left is white sugar or flour. There is little nutritional value left, and when it is digested it causes a massive spike and a sudden drop in your blood sugar. This is why you feel a rush and then feel so tired shortly after eating a chocolate bar. We all know which are the bad carbs. Let's look at some of the friendly carbs Whole grain bread Brown Rice Oats Whole Grains Beans Squashes Starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn These are examples of complex carbs, foods that are rich in fibre which slows down their digestion. This allows for a much slower, milder glucose spike. Anti-Inflammatory Chicken Noodle Soup 2 Rotisserie chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces. (Can use leftover chicken if you have it. Otherwise, make your life easy, and save the remainder of the chicken for meals for the week) 2 cups chicken bone broth 1 can full-fat coconut milk 2 carrots, sliced 2 celery stalks, sliced 3 cups frozen mixed vegetables of choice (I used mixed beans and carrots) 3 cloves of garlic 1/2 onion, diced 1/2 tsp turmeric 1/4 tsp black pepper 1 tsp each oregano, basil, rosemary or more to taste 1/2 tsp sea salt 1 cup pasta of choice Saute carrots and celery in a large soup pot on med-high for 5 minutes, or until tender. Add bone broth and coconut milk, and stir. Add chicken and vegetables. Simmer on medium heat. In a separate pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil and add pasta. Cook according to package directions. When the pasta is done, add to the pot of soup and let simmer for 20 - 30 minutes. A little over a year ago I went on a plant-based diet. I had just been diagnosed with multiple food allergies. When I say multiple, I mean 23 Just FOOD allergies/sensitivities! Eggs and Dairy were 2 of my "main ones" (ones that are found in the majority of foods), so shopping in the "green aisle" became the easiest place where I could find things I could eat. While I have no regrets over my dietary changes, it can be very confusing or overwhelming trying to meet all your body's nutritional needs. However, it can be done! Vegans in particular need to be conscious of their protein, iron, and calcium intakes. Protein: Many plants contain protein, but to get a complete protein, you may have to start food combining. Think red beans and rice, that sort of thing. Some vegan protein sources are: Quinoa Tofu/Tempeh/Edamame Hemp/Chia Nutritional Yeast Pita+Hummus PB&J on Whole Wheat Bread Iron: This is an area where vegans/vegetarians will struggle as sadly heme (animal-based) iron is more easily absorbed by the body than non-heme (plant-based). However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't still try! Vegan iron sources include: Lentils Cannellini beans Tofu Dark Leafy Greens Amaranth Baked Potatoes Blackstrap Molasses Calcium: There are plenty of delicious and easily digested vegan sources of calcium! These include: Soy Beans/Peas/Lentils Almonds Sesame Seeds/Tahini Dark Leafy Greens At first, navigating a vegan or vegetarian diet can seem like a Lot. But it really doesn't have to be. Simple breakfast idea, that ACTUALLY makes you feel good: Ingredients: - 1/4 cup chia seeds - 1 cup milk (you can use almond milk, coconut milk, or any other milk of your choice) - Sweetener of your choice (such as honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar), to taste - Optional toppings: fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, or granola Instructions: 1. In a bowl, mix together the chia seeds and milk. 2. Add sweetener to taste and stir well to combine. 3. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight, to allow the chia seeds to absorb the liquid and thicken. 4. Remember when I told you the scale is not the full story? @hollymarienash 💥🔥 Holly’s weight hasn’t changed much in the last month - ‘only’ 1.5lbs. How many of you would have said that’s not enough? Holly works HARD. She has always had a great work ethic - even prior to working with me she trained 6 days a week. She is consistent with her food quality. Client *anon* 😮‍💨 Main concerns were weight, PCOS and sore joints. In the past, this client regularly opted for fast food and choices of convenience - we immediately had her prepped at home which made her decision making a lot easier. We drastically increased protein intake as well as overall whole foods while reducing more processed foods to almost nil. Has this happened to you before? ⬇️ You try to be "good" with your eating during the day but then evening comes and it all unravels. You have so many cravings, eat everything in sight, feel like you can't stop, and then feel frustrated with yourself. Diet culture likes to sneak into our lives. It creates rules, unnecessary comparisons, and promotes restriction. I've highlighted some of the ways that it can show up in today's post. When we have all these rules, we end up becoming obsessed about our food and get stuck in a cycle of restriction and overeating then feeling like a failure. Eating becomes stressful. You can't open a magazine or scroll through Instagram without seeing some new diet. While most of them should be avoided like gas station sushi, sometimes something comes along that is worth looking closer at. A flexitarian diet is just that. What exactly IS a flexitarian diet? Basically, a flexitarian diet is a "flexible vegetarian" diet. It is predominantly plant-based with the occasional use of meat or dairy products. So, rather than choosing to have "Meatless Monday", you may choose to have "Meaty Monday" on a flexitarian diet. A flexitarian diet is based on the following principles: * Eat mostly fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. * Focus on protein from plants instead of animals. * Be flexible and incorporate meat and animal products from time to time. * Eat the least processed, most natural forms of foods. * Limit added sugar and sweets. My husband and I adopted a flexitarian diet a little over a year ago because of the numerous food allergies/sensitivities that I have. Finding things I could eat in the "green aisle" just seemed easier. But the more we continue to eat this way, the better we both feel! Protein. It forms literally every of your body, from your skin to your muscles and hormones. Without it, your body couldn't repair or heal itself, or grow and build new tissues. But not all proteins are equal. One of my favourite YouTubers, glitterandlazers @glitterandlazers (Seriously, check her out, she is hilarious!) has been documenting her health journey and has become a "protein girly". Which is fine, IF you're consuming healthy protein. Sadly, she is not. She's made content on the different types of protein bars/chips/snacks etc that she enjoys. None of the products she showed were healthy in any way, shape or form. Putting "contains protein" on a chocolate bar or bag of chips doesn't change the fact they are still chocolate bars and potato chips! It's so easy to get swayed by all the choices in the "Nutrition Aisle" (quotes definitely intended!) because OBVIOUSLY if it was made in a lab it must be better, right? Right?! Blueberry Coconut Chia Parfait 1 tbsp ground chia seeds 1/4 c full-fat canned coconut milk 1/4 c blueberries 1/2 tsp raw pumpkin seeds 1 tsp almond or pumpkin seed butter 1/8 tsp cinnamon Combine chia seeds and coconut milk in a small bowl or mason jar. @meagano_ 😮‍💨🔥 Main concerns on round 2 with Meagan was focusing on a sports nutrition approach, as she enjoys attending a local CrossFit gym. Meagan was diagnosed long ago with hypothyroidism; I had a sneaking suspicion it was more than that and encouraged her to push her doctor to dive deeper. She did (and any woman understands how hard this can be, as doctors are quick to push our concerns aside) - low and behold, she was diagnosed with Hashimotos. This is an autoimmune disease. Very quicky, this became our main focus as we incorporated new protocols into her sports nutrition. Meagan is smashing new PRs in the gym constantly, achieving new movements she previously could not complete (toes to bar! 💥) and has completely changed her life. Throughout both programs, we also tackled a history of disordered eating: yes- we tracked! Near the end, we slowly moved away from tracking while keeping regular communication (this was 1 year of working together in the works) so Meagan could tread the waters in the wild WITH SUPPORT. I’m so freaking proud of you. This is THE example of a complete lifestyle change and empowerment.
