My intention when I originally registered a while ago was to try to chase my PR at the @500festival #IndyMini yesterday. It’s my current half marathon PR course. However, with less than ideal weather conditions and recovering from a concussion, Coach @sugarruns and I decided to race cautiously. After running through the Speedway and feeling overheated, I decided not to push and pull back to where I was more comfortable. 🥵 It wasn’t worth it to me to risk getting ill when I’m toeing the line for Chicago 13.1 in a month. I got water every chance I got, dumped water on my head, and ran through the sprinklers. 💦 At any rate, I’m considering this my Concussion HM PR. (Is that such a thing?) 🤣 You can see my wounds covered with sunscreen, but I consider yesterday a success. I nailed my nutrition and hydration as I didn’t cramp. I was able to navigate the aid stations without PTSD. Without being heat-acclimated, I was able to run without taking walk breaks even with humidity at 92% at the start. I was able to run strong even though we had to reduce the training load in April as I recovered. I’m channeling old-school Nelly lately. 🩹 Seriously speaking, April was rough. I was finally excited about building again after taking a little time off after the @tokyomarathonfoundation. I ran the @cararuns Lakefront 10 Miler just to kick it off, but as everyone knows, I was Nancy Kerriganed at the 4.8 mile aid station. 🤕 It’s been challenging letting go of the anger. However, this incident has resulted in over $10K in hospital bills and counting, a concussion, multiple wounds/scars, passing on auditions/bookings, a reduction in training volume, etc. I’m getting ready to toe the line at @500festival mini marathon and was seeded in Wave 1 based on my @hiddengemhalf time. (I had registered a while ago.) I’m just trying to focus on the positive as I continue to heal. Let’s learn a little about her and why she chose @studentsrunchicago as her Charity Team. “In 2021, I joined Students Run Chicago in my senior year of high school. I had wanted to join the previous year, but due to the pandemic, I was unable to. When I first started out, I was scared, insecure, and felt pretty lonely at school. I was on my high school track team(as a slow runner), but I didn’t feel athletic or capable, but I took a leap of faith and joined SRC to challenge myself in completing a marathon. There, I met so many people around my age from all parts of the city, I’ve never felt more comfortable in my life to be myself and comfortable in my body. All the mentors were so kind and pushed each and everyone to set goals and accomplish them. I looked forward to the Saturday runs, talking to the friends I made and being each other’s support system. I remember running with a mentor, and they asked about the music I liked listening to and just bonding over our interests. The following week, they gave me a pair of earbuds so I could listen to music during my runs. I will forever remember that ❤️ I joined this year to be a charity runner so I can give back to those students and help provide more doorways towards success. Sunday morning long runs are good for the soul 😎👟 It was quite the treat I finished this run with some sunlight - usually I am already done before the sun is even up. This was such a strong and encouraging week and especially weekend of my 6 day build up. I went for time instead of miles and it was perfect. I added in a midnight long run (after a caffeine fast) and today’s run added in some power walking breaks (and snack breaks too 😋). Body has been feeling really good and I am extra grateful for that. This build up has been a lot of fun for me. 7 weeks until race week! I have been really savoring these long runs and workouts. I enjoy the training and process so much. I really discover another side of my mental and physical toughness. It is so empowering. What a joy it is to set a big goal and to get to work hard to achieve it. This week is a double run day week for me in my 6 Days in the Dome build up. It has truly been such a joy to get to this point and to be feeling this good. This has been months in the making to have this endurance. I truly love the training so much. I know when I am at the 6 days (or 144 hours) victory lap and I am exhausted and deep in the pain cave I will think back to these mornings and runs and remind myself of how much fun this is. My runner’s high kicked in before I even started running this morning and the miles really flew by! I think in part I also spent most of the run thinking about the @bucks game last night and how I should be the coach and the adjustments I would have made..because obviously I’d be a great NBA coach. But that’s a story for another day 😅🏀 Really looking forward to the next 54 days of training! And also I feel so much excitement to get back into marathons this fall with the @chimarathon I love being able to switch between ultras and marathons. Saturday we kicked off base training for the 2024 Chicago Marathon with our new Team World Vision crew. So fun to meet new runners and welcome runners back from past years. Todd & I added on a few extra miles because we usually train on higher mileage. The wind was awful and it felt like 26° at the start 🥶I’m feeling better getting over bronchitis, though the colder air I think is tougher on my lungs. “It’s been a long road without you my friend and I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again….” 🎶. In December of 2023 I diagnosed with a complete calf sprain and micro tear in the muscle. I have been a runner and have competed since age 9 and this was my first and hopefully last injury 🙌. It’s been a LONG road to recovery…not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. It was a character building experience that has made me appreciate my body and what it’s capable of more than ever. Like my physical therapist said, “no athlete has the spirit of a runner.” IT IS OFFICIAL!! THIS MARATHON RUNNER IS CLEARED FOR TRAINING!!!!! 12 miles to celebrate.
