"A Black Women's History of the United States" by Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross ReVisioning American History #5 Release Date 2.4.2020 Black women are the cornerstone of families, neighborhoods, and American history. Told in many narratives showing Black women's lives and contributions in American history from 1500 to the present day, Berry and Gross share the voices of enslaved women, freedwomen, midwives, religious leaders, artists, queer women, activists, and other trailblazers. Well researched, using historical documents to share the stories, realities, and injustices Black women faced throughout our history. Challenge what you were taught in school, and read this book as an introduction to a different perspective of American history. Sister Brennan always told her history class that the victors write the history books; think of how many stories aren't told, because they do not fit into the winner's narrative. I would have loved to have had this book while taking my "Women in America" college class. #ablackwomenshistoryoftheunitedstates #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #blackhistory #blackhistory #revisioningamericanhistory #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #2020bookreleases #historybooks #dainarameyberry #kalinicolegross

A Black Women’s History of the United States (Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross) — 👩🏿‍🦱👩🏿‍🦱👩🏿‍🦱👩🏿‍🦱 (4/5) Overall really enjoyed this book. The thematic arrangements were well done, and the individual stories of each woman were weaved in well with the overall history. Surprised that I liked hearing about women who are only known to the historical records as a single name, a single entry, as much as I did the better known names like Rosa Parks. I kind of wish there had been more space to go into more detail for each woman, sketch out the nuances of her life in more fullness, but that’s not what this book is for, I think.

Me to my daughter, before walking into the bookstore: I’m SERIOUS. One calendar and one book for you, nothing for me this time. Okay? Me after: ••• I’ve read some of these, but I like to notate hard copies of nonfiction audiobooks for reference, and the others are for my 15yo daughter who prefers physical books to ebooks and I’m happy to support authors by buying them. I put a ✨ next to what I’ve already read, in case you want to ask about any of them. #WhatDoesntKillYouMakesYouBlacker Thick #WhiteTearsBrownScars #WhyWeCantSleep #AgainstWhiteFeminism#ABlackWomensHistoryoftheUnitedStates #AnAfricanAmericanandLatinxHistoryoftheUnitedStates#Cinder #SunnySongWillNeverBeFamous#Geekerella#KeeperoftheLostCities (book 9) #OntheSubjectofUnmentionableThings#ThePaperGirlofParis #CinderellaisDead

Kicking off Black History Month with something y’all should know: Not every Rosie the Riveter was white. There were plenty Black women who worked in US factories and shipyards during World War II. @dainarameyberry and @kalinicolegross will tell you: “Black women rushed to fill vacancies left by soldiers headed to fight in World War II. To be clear, the shifts in policy did not automatically translate into a better quality of life for Black women and their families, as racist attitudes persisted. However, as historians Sharon Harley, Francille Rusan Wilson, and Shirley Wilson Logan explain, ‘World War II brought a brief exhilarating period when 600,000 Black women got industrial jobs with good salaries, making army vehicles, riveting aircraft and tank parts, working in ship and rail yards, in munition plants, and in the arsenals.’ Even so, Black women battled white women workers who refused to share shop floors with them, and in Detroit, white women led hate marches to prevent African American women from obtaining jobs. Labor unions and the NAACP launched concerted efforts that finally opened 10,000 jobs for African American women, though another 25,000 stayed unemployed. Yet Black women remained ready to seize new career options. For example, when the Army recognized and incorporated the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in 1943, even though the WACs would be segregated, 4,000 Black women quickly signed up.”—A BLACK WOMEN’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES 📸: Photographs and Prints Division, @schomburgcenter, @nypl #BlackHistoryMonth #WWII #DainaRameyBerry #KaliNicoleGross #ABlackWomensHistoryOfTheUnitedStates #BlackWomenGetItDone #BlackWomenInHistory #WorldWarII #BlackExcellence #WomensArmyCorp

Presenting the 4 books I have read so far this year. 2 nonfiction & 2 fiction. I would highly recommend each one. 1. Leadership in Turbulent Times is about the lives of 4 very different American Presidents especially how they overcame hardship and obstacles. It was a crazy experience reading this during the attack on the Capitol and the pandemic. These have definitely been turbulent times lately and we have not always had the best leadership to say the least. 2. A Black Women’s History of the United States is an incredibly powerful read. So many various stories of Black women living in this country. Stories of loss and pain but also perseverance, strength, courage and triumph. 3. Brooklyn is the tale of a young Irish woman moving to America and making a life for herself in New York City. Sometimes you have to be pushed out of your comfort zone to truly find yourself and this romance tells of that adventure in a beautiful way. 4. Mexican Gothic is a mysterious and very fun book. I don’t want to say too much about it and risk giving it away but I had a blast reading this and I never expected where it was going. Looking forward to more reading in 2021. As always please comment with any book recommendations you may have - I would love to know! #alyssareads #leadership #ablackwomenshistoryoftheunitedstates #brooklynthenovel #mexicangothic

Book Recommendations 📚 Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall. I read this back in September and not only was it informative and well-written but it also is thought provoking in the way the author connects feminism to topics such as hunger, poverty, gun violence, and women’s health. If your feminism is not intersectional, you are not a true ally and you are not a true feminist. 📚 I’m Still Here by Austin Channing Brown. This is a book I’m still thinking about and I read it in June. Powerful and deeply personal, this is a book everyone should read. 📚 A Black Women’s History of the United States by Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross. If you love history and want to learn about Black women’s stories and how they are and have been instrumental in shaping our country, you need to read this. #DecolonizeDecember Day 9: A BIPOC Historical Nonfiction ——— Though I read more fiction than nonfiction, I’ve always been interested in history and love learning things that were either glossed over in history classes or just not taught - especially when it comes to Black and queer history. These two have been on my ever-growing TBR for a while now, but I hope I can get to them before the end of the year. I’ve been escaping into fantasies for the most part, but I’d love to pick up some new history while I still have time.

A BLACK WOMEN’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES 🌹 Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross 🌹 This is basically my dream book, so instant recommendation. It follows what we’re usually shown as the ‘basic’ timeline in US history, based around the presence and actions of Black femmes. Each chapter builds around a person—from Nannie Helen Burroughs (suffragist, educator) to Patricia Okuomou. Through people, the bigger picture is illustrated. You WILL learn about people you’ve never heard of. I haven’t seen enough of this book on non Black readers’ pages. 👀 Get on it folks! 🖤 Some quotes I’d like to share👇🏽 “Black women artists, performers, writers, singers, and dancers have without question played powerful roles in defining and enriching our culture, often defying oppression in the process. Black women artists have been instrumental in expressing the truth of Black women’s inner lives, mapping our struggles outside and inside the Black community, but also unearthing our humor and creativity. From the Colonial-Era poet Phillis Wheatley to the modern literary giant Toni Morrison, Black women writers have given voice to our humanity and generated writing that has reshaped America’s literary canon.” “African American women organized voter registration drives in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Kansas, Colorado and California...Even those African Americans who could afford poll taxes and pass contrived reading tests still met other forms of voter intimidation—from loss of employment to loss of life. Pushing back against the tactics and racial terrorism, African American women organized...to canvass, the region, gathering evidence from Black people barred from the franchise.” 🌹 . . #bookstagram #ushistory #nonfictionbooks #ablackwomenshistoryoftheunitedstates #blackgirlmagic #diversebooks #readblackauthors #antiracisteducation #bookstagrammer #nonfiction

I have been really enjoying reading non-fiction via audio lately! So far this year I've listened to 13 non-fiction audiobooks, which is probably more than I read in 2019 put together. I find sometimes when I'm reading non-fiction in print, my attention span can drift more easily. But when I listen to it and my brain is engaged when I'm cross-stitching, I absorb the information much more easily. It feels like I'm back at uni listening to a lecture and it's just a great way to learn! . This book would make an excellent addition to any classroom, but especially the US. It covers the histories of Black women that are often either glossed over or erased completely. Although it took me a little while to get accustomed to the textbook-like style, I was soon absorbed in these women's stories. Ramey and Gross start from the first Black women in America, before they were forced over in slavery, and travels through the centuries through horrific medical procedures, the Civil War, the World Wars, the Civil Rights Movement, and up to today. It's a valuable addition, since these stories are often not included in regular history textbooks since no 'official' documentation exists to ‘prove’ them, or the women are written out of history altogether. . Reading all these stories really hammers home how innovative Black women have always been at fighting for their freedoms in a country that continuously tries to oppress them. One of my favourite parts was learning about one woman who washed laundry and cooked for confederate soldiers during the Civil War and found a way to pass along military secrets she overheard onto her husband by the way she hung the washing on the line! . I realise that it's UK Black History Month, but I read this last month and I'm super behind on reviews! I will be reading Black & British by David Olusoga this month, so expect that review in another month 🙈 Plus, we all should be striving to read and learn beyond our own borders all year round anyway. . These stories are quite in depth, but it'd make a great resource for finding jumping-off points for history projects if you have kids! . #abreadsandreviews2020

✨black women’s lives matter✨ 🖤 this is my post encouraging y’all to donate to the Louisville bail fund (link in bio) and to again, not stop advocating, organizing, emailing, donating, protesting, reading, educating, and zealously fighting to dismantle the system and justice for those who have been murdered by the state. 🖤 You cannot be silent or sit on the sidelines in hopes things will blow over. We are far beyond that. If you are not actively FOR a cause, you are only helping the oppressors, to uphold the system of the unjust, and your silence is compliance. 🖤 And if you cannot do more than share posts on your pages, or talk to your friends and family? That’s okay. Do that. And make sure you tell everyone you know to VOTE. Vote in the presidential election. Vote in your state election. But if you want to see real changes at the local levels, changes to police reform, you have to vote for city councilors, prosecutors, and judges. The system isn’t just police. It’s every prosecutor and judge, every legislator opposed to eliminating qualified immunity, opposed to police reform, opposed to prison reform, opposed to criminal law reform. It is the power of a state without consequences for their actions. 🖤 History has its eyes on us. I hope you stand for something worth standing for. 🖤

#StackSaturday: Fiction or Nonfiction? ——— I’m usually more of a fiction reader, but lately I’ve been drawn to a few nonfiction titles, most of them related to history. Maybe with all this extra time I can actually put some time into absorbing all of this new information - I’ve always been interested in learning about lesser known figures so this might be the perfect opportunity. Which do you prefer? ——— #hoodfeminism #ablackwomenshistoryoftheunitedstates #waywardlivesbeautifulexperiments #readingwomen #nonfiction #essaycollections #blackhistory #diversespines #bookspines #bookstack #librarybooks #quarantinereads #wellreadblackgirl #bookgirlmagic #bookstagram #bookphotography #bibliophile #blackgirlsread

#stacksaturday : When 2 books turns into 6 🙈 I was only supposed to get 2 to replace the ones I returned, but I couldn’t resist grabbing some extras that have had my attention for a while. I’ve done pretty good knocking out a book a night over the past couple of days so maybe I can actually finish these too. Now to figure out where to start ... any suggestions? —— #blackenough #ibizoboi #speakingofsummer #kalishabuckhanon #headsofthecoloredpeople #nafissathompsonspires #ablackwomenshistoryoftheunitedstates #dainarameyberry #kalinicolegross #whoputthissongon #morganparker #waywardlivesbeautifulexperiments #saidiyahartman #libraryhaul #librarybooks #bookstack #tbrlist #blacklit #blackreads #diversespines #readingwomen #wellreadblackgirl #bookgirlmagic #bookstagram #bookphotography #bibliophile
