How crazy that some women voluntarily gave up their babies for the “betterment of the Reich.” What a crazy time. Truth be told - there are many angels shown in the story…just as there were then. 2. 𝐃𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 - The way that Kelly weaves the story with the intermixing chapters of the before and the present is perfection. It’s been a while since I highlighted some recent reads with a cocktail. This drink was the result of needing to use up some blood oranges. It’s blood orange juice, lime juice, simple syrup, tequila, mint, topped with club soda. Delightful and refreshing. I’ve recently been getting back into historical fiction and I’m very happy about it. I’ve really enjoyed Martha Hall Kelly’s books and I was excited to read her fourth book and first outside of the Lilac Girls trilogy. After being liberated from ravensbrook, former spies Arlette and Josie find themselves still in the thick of rounding up Nazis who escaped Nuremberg. The writing, characters, and story are all great. Ok the Women deserves all the hype. My mom recently finished it and shared that it is Kristin Hannah’s best book to date. I figured my mom might be a little biased as she came of age during the Vietnam War and my dad is a Vietnam vet so she is very close to the subject material so I took it with a grain a salt. But I’m here to say, she’s right. It’s incredible and if you even sort of like historical fiction and haven’t picked it up what are you doing? What is a favorite genre of yours that you always enjoy returning to? #historicalfiction #bookstagram #biokstagramer #booklover #booknerd #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #kristinhannah #thewomen #goldendoves #cocktailsandcurrentlyreading #tequilaandbooks #cocktailsandbooks #booksandbooze #bibliophile #tequila #booksoutofdoors #readmorebooks #readoutside #thewomen #wwiihistoricalfiction #womenhistoricalfictionwriters #marthahallkelly #kristinhannah

Whenever I used to read novels about the horrors of WW2, I’d always wonder why didn’t the world react sooner? Was it due to a lack of awareness considering the time period everything transpired? Or was it simply because it didn’t affect them directly so they couldn’t be bothered? But today, with everything happening in Palestine, I’ve got my answer - even with all the awareness, the videos, the journalists, the dead bodies, the children being decimated into pieces, the world isn’t doing anything because it all boils down to “petty politics”. It’s beyond disgusting. The youth are protesting & endangering their lives for the rights of Palestinians, to put an end to this horrendous genocide, while the politicians are cosying up to each other, while “air dropping” food packages, as if they’ve done something grand. What a shame. What a sham. How pathetic of them. • • • • • • #bookreview #ranting #bookworm #bookstagram #booklover #lilacgirls #marthahallkelly #historicalfictionbooks #ww2books #bookcommunity #bookish #booksofinsta #books #bookstagrammer #bookblogger

😮 Wow! I hate war. Nothing good ever comes from war. Nothing good ever comes from hate. Because of everything that is happening in the world right now, I thought I should listen to this audiobook, even though it was extremely difficult for me. This book is based on true facts, inspired by actual events and actual people. The author states that she based almost everything on files, diaries, letters, evidence at the concentration camps, etc.. The Lilac Girls were real women who went through these real experiences during WWII. The book starts in 1939 and goes all the way through 1959. This way, you get to see what their lives were like prior to being in war and what life was like after the war and what it did to them. Germany invaded Poland and the Polish people’s lives were decimated. They witnessed people they loved be killed, they were tortured in scientific experiments, starved to death, and literally treated beyond what one could ever imagine. It is all so senseless. Senseless then; senseless now. I could not hurt a wild animal more or less a human. It is beyond my comprehension how a human can be cruel to another human. I see my grandchildren in all of the children that have gone through these atrocities. This is one of the reasons I think that educated women should run the world because they give life and cannot imagine taking it away. I thought that exclusively until I became aware of Marjorie Taylor Greene & her hate. So there are definitely exceptions to the rule. All children deserve to have a peaceful life and yet so many do not. Children should not have to see what they see during war, hear what they hear, and feel what they feel. If you would like to read a very realistic book about how World War II affected the Polish people, then you should read this book. Even though I will always carry disturbing images from what I read, I’m glad that I read it because it just solidifies my thoughts that war breeds hate and hate breeds war. This audiobook is 18 hrs long. #marthahallkelly is to be commended for writing a fabulous book. #thelilacgirls #wwii #worldwar2 #war #senseless #books #historicalfictionnovel

Martha Hall Kelly: Napraforgó-nővérek Nagy elvárásaim voltak a könyvvel szemben, de szerencsére felért hozzájuk és április kedvence lett számomra. A történet 3 nő szemszögéből íródott és valamennyiüket sikerült hihetetlenül életszerűen megalkotnia a szerzőnek.  Jemma, a rabszolgalány, aki teljes gyermekkorát egy ültetvényen élte le, azon kevés "szerencsések" egyikeként, aki sokáig maga mellett tudhatta a családját is. Rengeteg tragédia és fájdalom éri, ám mégis szakadatlanul küzd a saját és szerettei szabadságáért. Anne-May, Jemma gazdája, aki sajnos a legrosszabb fajta rabszolgatartókat megtestesítő, abszolút negatív szereplő. Ahhoz hasonlóan itt is betekintést nyerünk mindkét oldal életébe, mellbe vágnak a háború borzalmai és a szereplők sorsa miatt is izgulhatunk.

// #livrestagram #lecture #livrestagrammeuse #instalivre #bookstagrammer #bookpassion #bookofinstagram #avislecture #readingreview #bookaholic #partagelecture #bookoftheday #livraddict #bookpassion #booklover #bookstagram #igbooks #bilanlivresque #kindle #editionscharleston #lappeldescolombes #marthahallkelly #liseuse #ebook

. #marthahallkelly #easter #bookstagram #firstworldwar #historicalfiction #pionies

Last spring, I had the pleasure of attending an author talk with Martha Hall Kelly just as "The Golden Doves" was being published. She spoke passionately about her research process and the origins of the story. Despite my eagerness, the book ended up on my overcrowded TBR bookcase upon returning home. This year, determined to tackle my shelves, I finally dove into the novel, opting for the audiobook to complement the physical copy. As many readers have often lamented, I found myself wondering why I waited so long – the book was nothing short of fantastic. As a devoted fan of World War II historical fiction, I particularly appreciated the unique angle from which this story was told. The narrative follows Josie Anderson, an American, and Arlette LaRue, a French national, who both served in the resistance as teenagers during the war. Their harrowing experiences led them to Ravensbrück, a notorious women's concentration camp. While the novel navigates alternating timelines, it's the women's lives in post-war 1952 that dominate the narrative. Through Kelly's meticulous research, I gleaned insights into the political and intelligence landscape of the time, notably Operation Paperclip. This operation, a battleground between the US and Russia, aimed to recruit German – essentially Nazi – scientific and medical expertise, overlooking their wartime atrocities in exchange for their skills. The storytelling was riveting, with the alternating perspectives of Arlette and Josie providing depth and intrigue. Flashback chapters effectively filled in gaps, revealing the events that shaped the characters' post-war identities. "The Golden Doves" offers a diverse array of elements – suspense, historical depth, and compelling female leads – all set against a backdrop that spans Paris, Germany, Italy, and French Guiana. The book concludes with a tantalizingly open ending, hinting at the possibility of a sequel. I, for one, eagerly await further adventures with Josie and Arlette! #booklover #bookworm #marthahallkelly #thegoldendoves

. . . . . . #marthahallkelly #rosasesquecidas

🌻Book Review🌻 Although this is the third book of the trilogy consisting of the real-life Ferriday-Woolsey family, you can easily read any of the books in any order. The story of this book takes place during the Civil War, and it is about the strong and determined women of the Woolsey family, as told from the viewpoint of Georgeanne. Their family helps in bringing relief as nurses and such to all who are suffering, most importantly, no matter their color or which side of the war they're on. The story also follows Jemma, a sixteen-year-old who is enslaved with the rest of her family on a plantation in Maryland. The first half of the book is on the slow side as you get to know the characters more. However, it eventually picks up pace as these characters cross paths. As far as the historical aspects of the book, there was a lot of information, which I both enjoyed but also felt like it sometimes slowed down parts too. Both the story and the real-life period of time were brutal and heartbreaking, as people were kept as slaves and the country was at odds with one another as families, neighbors, and friends were literally fighting one another. The one thing this story does is highlight not only all of that, but something I know really nothing about: the courageous women who stepped up to work as nurses and fought to change the course of the future for women to come vs. simply the day-to-day tasks of having babies, cooking, cleaning, etc. with little to no education. Overall, this is a well written and researched book that has strong female characters, tension, drama, suspense and a mix of romance too. 4⭐ QTD: What is your favorite flower? #sunflowersisters #marthahallkelly #bookreview #ballantinebooks #myownopinion #historicalfiction #civilwarfiction #booksofinstragram #readersofinsta #bookishladiesread #anovel #bookpic #adultfiction #americanhistory

A prequel to Lilac Girls, Lost Roses was equally as riveting, heartbreaking, and interesting as we followed Eliza Ferriday (mother to protagonist Caroline in the Lilac Girls), Sofya Streshnayva (royal Russian blood), and Varinka (fortune tellers daughter and servant). Their stories intertwine in the most unusual of ways and as war waged on, we are taken on a journey of indescribable emotions. I highly recommend reading it before Lilac Girls if you can. Both will have you in tears. #2024readingchallenge #100booksinayear #book23 #marthahallkelly #lostroses #lilacgirls #carolineferriday

🫡🇦🇺ANZAC Day🇦🇺🫡 I have created a stack of books dedicated to all those brave young people who fought in WW2. I bought most of these books after visiting the holocaust museum in Washington DC 🇺🇸and Israel 🇮🇱 . Both these museums were very sobering and have made me appreciate ANZAC Day even more. 🫡 The Champagne War 🫡 If I Were You 🫡 The Zookeeper‘s Wife -DNF 🫡 The Girl in the Green Sweater - TBR 🫡 Some Girls, Some Hats and Hitler - TBR 🫡 The Taster - TBR 🫡 Sarah’s Key - TBR 🫡 Lilac Girls - TBR 🫡 The Book Thief 🫡 Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl - TBR ❓ Have you had any family members fight in a war? 🤔 Both my grandfathers fought in WW2. As a big historical fiction fan, Martha Hall Kelly being a favorite author of mine should come as no surprise! Lilac Girls was my first read of hers (my favorite so far) followed quickly by Lost Roses (such a sucker for anything with a tie in to the Romanovs), and I’ve just started Golden Doves! I recently read The German Wife by Kelly Rimmer and while I liked it, I didn’t love it (like I did The Things We Cannot Say by the same author). However, it introduced me to Operation Paperclip which is also a storyline in Golden Doves. Sunflower Sisters is on my list too! I love that Lilac Girls, Lost Roses and Sunflower Sisters share a common thread but aren’t necessarily a series in terms of reading in a certain order. What’s your favorite @marthahallkelly book?!

@marthahallkelly @editionscharleston #lappeldescolombes #marthahallkelly #editionscharleston #chroniquelitteraire #avislivresque #avislecture #avislivre #litteratureamericaine #litterature #romanhistorique #roman #passionlivre #passionlecture #lecturepassion #lecture #lectureterminée #lectures #lectureaddict #lecturedumoment #lectrice #lectriceaddict #lectricecompulsive #instalecture #instalivre #instalivres #livreaddict #livrestagram #livre #livrestagrammeuse #livrepassion

🪻💉🩸Lilac girls (Când înflorește liliacul), by Martha Hall Kelly🩸💉🪻 @editura_litera I read this book in 2021, in my historical fiction era. It’s a book about the Holocaust, the tragedy happening specifically in Ravensbruck, told from the perspectives of three different women. It’s a heartbreaking story about the horrors and barbaric treatment of women during the WW2 at the “reeducation camps”, but also about survival, resilience, redemption and courage. I tried to capture a different aestethic for this book and the sun ray came exactly on point. #nofilter 💜 *4⭐️* - - - - - - - #lilacgirls #candinfloresteliliacul #marthahallkelly #aestetic #aestethics #bookstagram #bookstagramromania #booksta #booksbooksbooks #books #lovebooks #booklover #read #readmorebooks #historicalfiction #lovetoread #edituralitera

#book #bookstagram #bookstagramfrance #livres #livrestagram #lire #lecture #marthahallkelly #letournesolsuittoujourslalumieredusoleil

Book 8️⃣ for 2024 was Martha Hall Kelly’s Lilac Girls. This was my Spring Break read, and while heavy, it was poignant and beautiful too. Lilac Girls follows the story of three women in three different countries growing up during World War II. There were so many parallels to things happening in the world today, and it honestly was soul crushing at points. But I’m glad I read it and am excited to discuss at our next Book Club event! Have you read this yet? Are you adding it to your must read list? I’d love to know! #goodreadschallenge #goodreadschallenge2024 #whatimreadingnow #wordswordswords #marthahallkelly #lilacgirls

Lilac Girls, by Martha Hall Kelly 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 Goodreads: 4.29/5 Summary: September 1939, Hitler invades Poland. Caroline, a New York socialite, and ambassador of the French consulate, watches in horror as Hitler’s army marches towards France. Kasia, a polish teenager, is swept away with helping the resistance, only to end up getting herself and her family shipped to Ravensbruck, the infamous women’s concentration camp. Herta, a recently graduated medical student, who answers a job posting and ends up as a doctor at Ravensbruck. Three lives collide and irreversibly change. Thoughts: I didn’t want to read this book. I had just finished Crescent City and wanted to dive into book 2 with the upcoming release of book 3, but this was for book club and I had to fit it in. And I’m so grateful that I did. Books about the Holocaust, or any time where humans are truly ugly, are so hard to read. But they need to be read. We need to honor those who were subject to the horrors by reading about them, learning about them and to make sure we don’t continue to make the same mistakes of our predecessors. As for the book, I absolutely fell in love with Caroline. A strong woman who isn’t obsessed with the societal pressure to get married and have babies. Instead, she looks to helping other people and finds much fulfillment in that. Creating an entire life of it. Of course it is a privilege that Caroline can do so, not having to make an actual income, but that she decides to spend her wealth on others is beyond admirable. I didn’t love Kasia. Her constant pessimistic attitude and refusal to find happiness after the fact grated on me. But I think that was the point. Being liberated didn’t mean sunshine and rainbows, things didn’t go back to “normal” and they certainly weren’t easy. We can’t expect those who have been wronged to simply be happy to now be left alone. We have to help them heal in their own way and on their own time. Herta, absolutely no one’s favorite character, is the perfect example of indoctrination. And that’s all I have to say about her. Pick up this book. Learn something. Be thankful for how we’ve grown and reflect on the growing we still have to do.

Rosas Esquecidas.

#book #bookstagrammer #books #bookstagramfrançais #bookadditct #livre #marthahallkelly #livres #livresque #livrealire #livreadddict

Review for Lost Roses: 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹/5 Martha Hall Kelly truly has a gift for bringing life to the stories of heroic women in history. I loved Lilac Girls and have had Lost Roses on my shelf for a while. I’m just sad I didn’t read it sooner. Historical fiction set in World War 1 America, Paris, and Russia. Chapters told from three POVs and the character development is top tier! As always, I learn so much history from Kelly’s books as she shines light on fascinating points in history. This picture is from my trip to Paris. I just love traveling and am really looking forward to our summer adventures!☀️

Book review- Lilac Girls 🌸 Happy Wednesday!! We are half way through the week and I’m so ready for the weekend!! I recently finished this book and let me tell you, this book has stirred up a new love for historical fiction for me!! I’m so glad @hannahbooksit told me to read it !! Inspired by a real life events, this book shares the stories of three women during World War II. To read what they endure was rough but really eye opening to the cruelty of those days. It tells the story from three different point of views. First, we have Caroline who was an actress and her life was forever changed when the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939. In another place there is Kasia who ends up getting sent to Ravensbruck, a notorious concentration camp for women and then there is Herta a young doctor who answers an ad for a government medical position only to find herself trapped in a male dominated environment of Nazis and power. My heart broke hearing the things that were endured but at the same time Martha wrote in such a way that kept me interested the whole way through!! She is definitely an auto-buy author for me now!! Content warnings: rape(not too graphic in details), torture ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/ 4.5 STARS!! #historicalfiction #bookreview #bookrecs #bookstagram #booktok #bookcommunity #historicalfictionbooks #marthahallkelly

It's the first day of Spring! In honor of all the flowers blooming, here are four of my favorite floral titled novels. 🪻The Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly Historical fiction that follows three women with a connection to Hitler's Ravensbruck concentration camp for women. There's a ton of WW2 fiction out there, but this one was unique. ☘️The Collected Regrets of Clover by Mikki Bramer Clover is a death doula who still has a lot to learn about life herself. She's a loveable character, and you will champion her growth. 🌹The Rose Code by Kate Quinn I absolutely loved this novel about the code breakers of Bletchley Park during WW2. Kate Quinn's novels are all incredible, and this is my favorite of hers. 🌻Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney Feeney knows how to write a tantalizing thriller, and while Daisy Darker wasn't her best, it is still absolutely worth reading when you're in the mood for a dark and twisty story. #daisydarker #alicefeeney #therosecode #katequinn #thecollectedregretsofclover #mikkibramet #lilacgirls #marthahallkelly #historicalfiction #thrillerbooks #thrillerreviews #bokstagram #booknerd #botm

#oorlog #degoudenduiven #marthahallkelly #boek #lezen #leestip #boekstagram #boekentip #recenseren #Boekblogger #lezenisleuk #lezer #leesclub #recensie #nathieleest #bookstagram #lovethisbook  #nevernotreading  #bookaholic  #readabook  #leesvoer  #lovetoread  #readaholic  #liefdevoorboeken  #loveforbooks

Book 22 done. Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. March 15th to March 18th. I wanted to read this book after seeing all the hype about it and it wasn't one of my favorites to read. It was good don't get me wrong, I just didn't like that it was written like an interview. I would have just rather have it be more story like. On to the next, Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly #book22of2024 #24booksin2024 #bookchallenge #booklover #daisyjonesandthesix #taylorjenkinsreid #lilacgirlsnovel #marthahallkelly

#bookstagramfrance #bookstagram #instalecture #instalivre #livraddict #livrestagram #marthahallkelly #letournesolsuittoujourslalumieredusoleil #editionscharleston

Book #5 of 2024: Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelly While not as graphic as Lilac Girls, I had very similar issues with Lost Roses as I did with the previous book. I once again found the story/stories to be boring, I didn't find the characters likeable much less relatable, and I wasn't invested in any of the romantic relationships. I also would have wished for a bit more historical context, as the events taking place are happening due to World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution but there's never much detail given other than what directly affects the characters. One point of redemption for me were the side characters Luba and Radimir. I really liked them both and found them the most relatable, so it's sad that they didn't play a bigger role in the book. Given my disappointment with both Lilac Girls and Lost Roses, I've decided not to read Sunflower Sisters, the third and final book in this series. 📚 @marthahallkelly @editions_pocket #romanhistorique #secondeguerremondiale #camps #avislecture #avislittéraire #bookstagram #instabook #histoire #marthahallkelly #destinsdefemmes #secondworldwar #historicalbooks
