I always enjoy the second book of a trilogy the most, and The Dragon Republic is no exception. It was a wild ride, with so many moving pieces and characters. I really enjoyed Rin’s character development and her deepened relationships with Kitay, Nezha, and Venka. R. F. Kuang masterfully tells a story of a war where everything is not quite as it seems, and there is no black and white right or wrong side of the war. The ending had me SCREAMING is was a great twist. Makovou válku jsem četla na jaře 2022. Dračí republiku o dva roky později. Vzpomenout si na děj a důležité momenty prvního dílu byl děs, ale dalo se to. DR obsahuje dvě mapy a seznam osob. To bylo velmi užitečné a to nejen pro děj dvojky, ale rovněž pro vzpomínání viz výše. V rámci recenze na MV jsem měla určitá očekávání od druhého dílu, konkrétně že „se dočkám většího vysvětlení autorčina uchopení magie a další dávky historie světa a jeho propojenosti se vším“. Řekla bych, že došlo na určité úrovni ke splnění všech mých očekávání, i když by se daly ještě nějaké ty informace přidat. Takže trojko - nezklam mě! A jaké tedy bylo pokračování této série? Absolutně největším tahounem celého příběhu je: • rozvoj postav, • politika a strategie, • válčení a boj o moc, • zrady a zvraty. Stejně jako v MV se můžete těšit na: • velkou čtivost a emoční jízdu, kdy se od příběhu nelze odtrhnout, • bohaté, živé a detailní popisy, které dokáží přenést do samotného dění, • děj, co má velký spád a graduje přesně tam, kde má, • akci, napětí, zvraty, násilí, krev, mrtvoly, kosti, znásilnění…, • dílo, co nemá hluchá místa a přebytečné nesmyslné odstavce, • atmosféru tragické nevyhnutelnosti okořeněné božstvím a nezměrnou mocí, • bohatě vykreslené prostředí, se kterým autorka aktivně pracuje, • bravurně uchopené propojení fantasy prvků (magie jako božská moc ve spojení s člověkem) s čínskou historií a jejími válečnými konflikty, • drogy a závislosti na nich (proměna lidských myslí), • velký důraz na duchovní a náboženská témata, • velmi propracované postavy, jež se v průběhu děje rozvíjejí a ke kterým si raději nepěstujte citečky, jelikož autorka se s nimi nemaže, • otázky morálky, daň za neomezenou moc, zrůdnosti režimů, co znamená tzv. vyšší dobro a kdo o něm má právo rozhodovat, jaké je to míti v srdci pouze nenávist a hněv a toužit jen po pomstě… Jinak na závěr dodávám - hlavní hrdinka projde velkou proměnou a zkouškou, zda v dobrém či špatném, to Vám neřeknu… Ve spolupráci s @hostbrno 🐉 . #dracirepublika #thedragonrepublic #thepoppywar #rfkuang

Ce livre était un second tome, je ne mets pas de résumé parce que je ne voudrais pas en révéler trop sur le premier tome ❤ 🌼A l'heure où j'écris cet avis, j'ai fini le livre tout juste ce matin et j'ai encore du mal à trouver les mots pour décrire ce livre... 🌼Je recommande à tout le monde de se lancer dans cette série, le premier tome pour sûr, a été traduit en français car je l'ai lu dans cette langue. Attention néanmoins aux TW ⚠️ 🌼J'ai été très rapidement totalement investie dans ce livre, malgré le peu de souvenirs que j'avais du premier livre 😂 (je remercie d'ailleurs @dracarys.bookss pour son résumé mais aussi pour m'avoir lancé sur ce livre 😻). J'aime Rin de tout mon coeur, j'ai rarement eu autant d'attache pour une héroïne. Les personnages sont tous hauts en couleur et malgré mon envie de ne pas trop m'attacher (parce qu'on ne sait jamais ce qui peut arriver), c'est impossible de ne pas les aimer) ❤ 🌼Le rythme était haletant et malgré la fatigue, j'avais du mal à décrocher. Il s'est passé tellement de choses que je n'avais pas vu venir et j'ai fini ce tome particulièrement choquée par la tournure des évènements. Le monde créé par l'auteure est particulièrement bien développé et on s'y croirait. Et le contexte politique est particulièrement intéressant. 🌼Maintenant que je l'ai fini, je ne sais plus trop quoi faire de ma vie. I'm still going through a bit of a reading slump, but I read the first Poppy War book to get out of it...? The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang-5🌟 Holy wow. This is the second time I've read The Poppy War (book 1) and I'm still completely terrified of continuing with this series. I love the plot, the history, the absolutely unhinged characters (especially you, Fang Runin!), and so much more. If you are someome who loves East-Asian inspired fantasy, a good dose of history and combat scenes, and some absolutely devastating and heart-wrenching plot twists, I would recommend this for you. We left The Poppy War with Rin in a self-destructive mindset having committed an atrocity to save her city. Filled with rage and despair she must pick up her broken pieces and continue fighting, because as we have all learned... war will never cease to exist. “The more she thought about it, the more she realized that the only permanent thing about her might be war. She couldn’t imagine where she’d be if she weren’t a soldier anymore. The past four years had been the first time in her life that she’d felt like she was worth something.” In contrast to The Poppy War - Rin is centerstage in this now civil war, people know who she is and what she is capable of. This book is more heavy in the war tactics department which I just love. While Rin is a great warrior it’s Kitay who holds the strategic brains here and I loved to see his character arc. The political drama is increasingly more interesting and difficult since in The Poppy War you knew exactly who the enemy was..now you are not so sure. New characters and history revelations makes you double guess who you can trust. Don’t you just love this constant fear?! What I especially liked (in a painful way) was that Rin is not suddenly “all better” in this second book. She is suffering from PTSD and you get all of that dark character elements like drug abuse, anger, paranoia and such that come with it. I think it’s absurd when a character suffers from an extremely traumatic event and they are able to miraculously heal from it. Of course Rin is angry and making bad decisions who wouldn’t be? “And if she wanted to recognize it, then she would have to be something, feel something other than anger, but she was afraid that if she stopped being angry then she might shatter.” I am in so much pain, never trust the last 50 pages of an R.F. Kuang book. FOREHEAD KISS?? Okay that’s all.

📚 Series Review 📚 The Poppy War by RF Kuang Genre: Epic/Historical Fantasy 🔥 My Thoughts ⬇️ The people weren’t kidding: this series is B-R-U-T-A-L! The Poppy War did a great job setting the stage for the trilogy and while I could tell it was Kuang’s debut novel, it was still fantastic. Then I got to The Dragon Republic. That is what a second book should be!! It takes every single element from The Poppy War and expands on them all in significantly compelling ways. Kuang takes everything we learned in Book 1, shreds it to pieces, lights it on fire, and forces it all down our throats while we scream “Yes please, give us more!” Unfortunately that all comes crashing down with The Burning God. I don’t like giving spoilers, so I won’t be going into detail, but I felt certain aspects of the book warranted a lot more attention than what she gave them. On the flip side, she could’ve glossed over multiple parts she chose to focus on chapter after chapter. I also felt like after doing such a spectacular job with Rin’s character arc through the first two books, Kuang was in over her head with how to effectively round out her journey. THE POPPY WAR ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 THE DRAGON REPUBLIC ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ THE BURNING GOD ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I chose to review these as a whole series instead of individually in order to avoid spoilers. Overall I give the 3 books a collective 4/5 stars, but The Burning God gets 5/5. I don’t usually cry reading books but I actually sobbed in this one. I got reallllll close in book 1 but man…. That third book is poetry. The Poppy War trilogy follows Rin, a poor war orphan who works hard enough to get admitted to Sinegard, the country’s elite war college. While there, she learns about a pantheon of gods that when she is strong enough she can call down to give her powers. The country is invaded by an enemy and she is forced to call down the phoenix god which honestly makes her go insane. The story is based on Chinese/Japanese history of war, opium addiction, and Chinese civil wars. The blend of history and fantasy was masterfully done. I would absolutely recommend this series. It didn’t feel cheesy in the way some fantasy books do, the only real magic involve shamans and their ability to call down different gods. I will say, these books are pretty gorey (especially book 1. What This Week 🌸 I’m finding myself on a little break right now. I’m very motivated to get a lot of house projects done that I’ve put off for years. I’m also very motivated to play my switch and listen to audiobooks. Hopefully, I can find a good balance of the two. A new save file for Stardew Valley has completely taken over my life. Concerned Ape, I love you. I am patiently waiting for the new update to come to Switch. So patient 😬 I am also slowly but surely making my way through the Poppy War trilogy. When I pick it up, I absolutely devour it. I’m also trying to spread it out a little bit because I truly am enjoying it so thoroughly and want to savor it. That says a lot about how I feel about this series. I project this to be a five star read for sure. I'm currently listening to Warbreaker and absolutely loving the unique magic system in this one. Brandon Sanderson, the man that you are.

𝘞𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘶𝘱.” i have been picking up and putting this book down for months now, for no good reason!!! i literally told @fiafictionized i was reading this too in JANUARY😖 so happy to have finally read it, however, i have a new problem…i simply am not big brained enough to write a review that will do this book justice :’) there is so much to unpack and i’ve people either really love or despise this story. from my rating i’m sure you can see which side i fall on, but i can absolutely see others’ criticisms, especially when it has to do with the history this was based off of. one thing i didn’t expect was the bits of humor we got at the beginning, and it made me love some of the characters more. the fantastical elements mixed in just worked for me. the tone shifts drastically throughout, and there are some very gruesome scenes that need to be read with caution (this is a book that draws off of the Second Sino-Japanese War). the main character is sometimes labeled a heroine, but i truly feel she morphs into an antihero right before our eyes. the emotions, motivations, and character relationships are more complex than a lot of what i’ve been reading lately, so again, i feel i can’t accurately express what i think of this book and it’s a bit frustrating 🥹 maybe after finishing the series, i can sit down and sort through my thoughts more, but even that would take several days. though i loved it, i can’t recommend this book in good conscience due to the gruesome scenes that were near reality, but it’s worth it for those who enjoy high/epic fantasy and have read similar books before. #bookreview #thepoppywar #epicfantasy #highfantasy

BOOK REVIEW The Poppy War has been on my TBR list for a long time, and when I read and loved Yellowface I knew I needed to prioritize it. This book really was every bit as good as everyone says. I am picky with fantasy, expecting fabulous world building, complex issues / themes to be tackled and flawed but lovable characters, all of which The Poppy War had. I cannot stress enough how compellingly, expertly and beautifully crafted this story was. It should be noted that this book was much darker than I expected (for some reason, I was under the impression it was a YA text, which is part of why I put off reading it for so long) but I was here for it. It was gory and gruesome and dealt with serious, complex and controversial issues. This was so stunning and I truly don’t understand how this could possibly be a debut, but after reading Yellowface, I am acutely aware of how brilliant RF Kuang is, so I guess it makes sense… Are you a fan of fantasy? I enjoy dabbling in it, but it’s not my go to genre…

This is my official pitch for you to read my new favorite series. Read for a spoiler free overview! 👇🏼 • ‘The Poppy War’ perfectly sets the tone for the series as a whole. I found it easy to instantly build a connection with Rin, our main character. She shows amazing resilience from the start of the novel. It was hard not to feel drawn to her instantly. In Sinegard, we meet our dynamic cast of characters, some being easier to love and than others. Learning about the world and magic system is such a fascinating experience. By the end of book one, I was completely invested! I immediately picked up ‘The Dragon Republic’, which is filled with non-stop action. The characters all begin to have so much more depth. It was a blast to see their growth throughout book two. The politics really begin pick up and become one of the most interesting aspects of the series. Moving into ‘The Burning God’, it seems like a lot about what Rin was lead to believe about her country comes into question. At this point in the trilogy, the characters had evolved into something way more impactful than I could have imagined. Overall, I loved everything about The Poppy War trilogy. R. F. Kuang’s writing is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. Every scene felt so cinematic. The world building, magic system, politics, war strategy, and character arcs are all fantastic. This book is not for the faint of heart. I absolutely love R.F. Kuang, and Babel and Yellowface are some of my favorite reads. I have heard only good things about The Poppy War trilogy, but I have been warned that it can be heavy. And boy, it sure was heavy. The Poppy War is an amazing adult high fantasy following Rin, a war orphan raised by opium smugglers who dreams of a better life. She gets into a military academy in the capital city, and discovers her talent at military strategy and her link to the gods. She discovers that not only can she call down the power of the Phoenix god, but she can use it to win a war. But will the Phoenix god ask too high a price? It took me longer to get through this book because of the heavier content, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I think Rin is such an interesting character, and as a history buff, I love to see R.F. Kuang draw on real historical events (as sad and inhumane as they can be). R.F. Kuang is cementing herself as one of my favorite authors of all time. I cannot believe The Poppy War was her debut novel, because it’s so well-written and developed. I can’t wait for her new book, Katabasis, which is coming out later this year! Pomimo wielu porażek dziewczyna nie poddaje się i dalej próbuje swoich sił jako żołnierz, a nawet i dowódca, jednak tym razem nie stanie po stronie Cesarzowej. “Została sama. Z okaleczonym ciałem, rozbitą duszą, łaknąca pokuty i rozgrzeszenia niemal tak samo, jak walki i zniszczenia.” dlatego teraz będzie walczyć ramie w ramie z rewolucjonistami. Rin będzie próbować uwolnić nie tylko świat ludzi, ale i Bogów. A: Bardzo pozytywnie zaskoczyła mnie ostatnia część trylogii. Screaming, crying, throwing up • As a series: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 • The Poppy War trilogy is a series that I will never forget. I started this series a year ago, which is crazy to think about. I was on spring break, and on the plane to California I finished The Poppy War. I remember going through a range of emotions, but I was in public so I couldn’t just cry (I teared up but wanted to scream.) I then had some pretty major life changes, causing me to go into a massive reading slump, and I didn’t pick up The Dragon Republic until @renees__reads suggested we do a buddy read. I am forever grateful for her because I was so scared and intimidated by this series and needed a push. I also did an improvised buddy read with @metamorphobooks and she let me rant and talk about book three 🥲 The last two weeks or so have been full of so much fun, rage, and sadness while I read these last two books. I reconnected with the world and characters and fell back in love with them! I don’t want to spoil anything, but this series is a must read for anyone who loves war, magic, feminine rage, and commentary on religion and race. We follow Rin as she attends a military school, learns about shamanism, and then goes on to fight a war that does not end. R.F. Kuang is a highly educated author and that definitely shows in her writing of these books. There’s a little bit of everything in this series, and it has some of the best found family I have ever read 🥹 I will say there are lots of triggers in this book, so be careful and look them up if you need to. It isn’t a fun, silly, carefree series. The main character doesn’t get to be happy, and that really sucks. However, reading this was so refreshing because of its brutality. I cried a lot. Like sobbing for three hours after finishing the last book kind of pain. I’m not gonna lie, this destroyed me in a way that I thought nothing ever would. La protagonista puede llegar a exasperar, aunque teniendo en cuenta la edad y todo ppr lo que se ve obligada a pasar hasta cierto punto es entendible. Hoy, por fin, les comparto la reseña del tercer y último libro de la trilogía de The Poppy War de R.F. Kuang. SINOPSIS Y TW'S EN LA SEGUNDA IMÁGEN The Burning God ⭐4.25/5 Creo que nunca lograré recuperarme de este libro. Lo que me costó sentarme y tranquilizarme para poder escribir esta reseña. Y aún así no logro encontrar palabras que le hagan justicia. A este final no le hizo falta absolutamente nada. Lo tiene todo. Más guerra, más estrategia, más sufrimiento, más política, más traiciones, más complots, más secretos, más alianzas, nuevos personajes, viejos personajes, victorias, derrotas, magia, de todo! Leer TBG fue la verdadera montaña rusa de emociones. Fang Runin es sin dudas uno de los mejores personajes que se hayan escrito en la literatura moderna. Recorrer su camino en estos tres libros, vivir con ella su progreso, fue algo completamente único. Más allá de las decisiones que tomara, a veces la entendía y otras veces no, siempre luchó por lo que creyó correcto y nunca traicionó sus valores o agachó la cabeza. Eso es algo que respeto. El resto de los personajes también son de lo mejor que leí, absolutamente todos. En especial Kitay, Nezha y Venka. Maravillosos. Siento que viví toda una vida con ellos y los voy a extrañar mucho. Sin duda esta es una trilogía que te hace replantear muchas cosas. Sobre todo cosas sobre los personajes. Yo comencé amando algunos y odiando a otros, solo para que al final de la trilogía me empezaran a caer un montón de fichas sobre un montón de cosas acerca de los personajes y me di cuenta que no todo es tan blanco o negro. No todos son lo que aparentan ser. Voy a extrañar muchísimo pero muchísimo de verdad esta trilogía, con su historia y sus personajes. Me los llevo a todos en la memoria y no me queda más que recomendarles estos libros si aún no los han leído por favor háganlo porque son insuperables de verdad. 💭 Conocían esta trilogía? Se eu não amasse The Poppy War tanto assim!!!!! Essa trilogia se tornou uma das minhas favoritas e me fez ficar totalmente obcecada e apaixonada pela escrita da R. F. Kuang. A Guerra da Papoula é uma fantasia visceral, crua, frenética e fascinante que consegue manter o leitor imerso e totalmente à mercê dos acontecimentos. São livros que retratam a guerra e tudo que a envolve, sem suavizar nenhuma situação e mostrando toda a devastação, sem pena. Quando li o primeiro volume já senti o impacto e sabia que não seria feliz até terminar de ler a trilogia (fiquei devastada quando terminei o terceiro livro). Se tem uma fantasia que vou indicar sempre, é essa. Mas como falei antes, são livros bem gráficos que trazem temas pesados, então cuidado quando for consumir. A Guerra da Papoula é uma crescente, os livros só vão melhorando na questão desenvolvimento. Agradeço muito a @intrinseca por ter trazido esses queridos pra cá com uma tradução impecável 🤎

𝗟𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝘂́𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗼́𝗻 (𝗟𝗮 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮 𝗱𝗲 𝗹𝗮 𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝟮) Después de haber releído hace mes y medio el primer libro de esta trilogía, que me gustó aun más que cuando lo leí hace unos años, tenía claro que no tardaría demasiado en leer esta segunda parte. Además de que ese final hacía que necesitara leer el segundo, todo el mundo que había leído ambos estaba de acuerdo en que este es incluso mejor. 🏹 En este segundo volumen, encontramos muchas más escenas de acción y momentos duros de leer, porque la autora transmite mucho de lo que viven sus personajes y no escatima en detalles para contar lo que sucede en el transcurso de una guerra. Si bien en el primer libro el comienzo era algo lento, en este la trama ya arranca en los primeros capítulos. ❤️🩹 Uno de los elementos clave de esta serie son sus personajes. No son personajes que siempre vayan a caer bien al lector, porque son moralmente grises y a veces hacen cosas crueles pero que también son consecuentes con lo que han vivido. En ese sentido, me encanta lo bien construidos que están, tanto los que tienen un papel principal como los secundarios. Las relaciones entre ellos y cómo cambian son simplemente espectaculares. ✨ Además de Rin, me ha encantado que en este libro podamos saber más de la vida de personajes que me gustaron en el primer libro, como Kitay, Nezha o Venka, que viven de forma distinta todo lo que está pasando. ⚠️ Recuerdo que este libro no es fantasía juvenil, sino adulta, porque se tratan temas duros de forma cruda pero creo que también necesaria. Para mí es una de las mejores sagas de fantasía que se ha publicado en los últimos años. ✍🏻 Este es el tercer libro que leo de R. F. Kuang y puedo decir que se ha convertido en una autora imprescindible para mí y quiero leer todo lo que publique, porque son increíbles sus personajes y sus tramas, aunque me haga sufrir demasiado a veces. ───────────────────────────────── The Poppy War is a slow-paced plot with so many diverse characters appearing. At first, I wasn't into this book until I slid into the climax of the story. It made me gut-wrenching about how naive the main lead (Fang Runin a.k.a Rin) was in dealing with her responsibility. The story pinpoints the war between Nikai and another nation called the Federation or Mugen, and the clash happened when the Mugen did an invasion of Nikai to expand their territory. Politics is all the things we could lay as a conclusion of the war itself. After stretching my thoughts on the whole plot, I could say that this book kinda reminds me of a real event where the intention of ethnic cleansing is well presented in this story, leading me to the state of long-term grief about the fact that this book might be inspired from the real wars. Furthermore, the death of some characters also made me hold so much anger. I kinda deplore how Althan died from battling alone just to save Rin from the troops. Rin is impulsive and always scared when it comes to making rational decisions, which is why I found no development characters at all. Probably because it's a series and a slow-paced story, the writer wants to show a slow development so the reader can focus on the other details. Unfortunately, right after the moment when Rin finally reached her full power (the fire god), many people died due to the horrible impact of Rin's power, including civil folks. They were burned in the pool of fire, becoming a pile of dust as the remaining thing.
