✨ Vacation Workouts ✨ We spent Spring Break camping in the Smoky Mountains, and though I didn’t run at all while we were away, I still got plenty of movement and exercise. There’s no doubt I love to explore a new city, town or trail by going for a run, but rarely if ever at the expense of time with my family while we are on vacation. But the cool thing is, when being active is a consistent part of your daily lifestyle, it just works out that movement naturally becomes part of your vacation too 👊🏼 Between a day at the aquarium and exploring Gatlinburg, campground walks with Mel and a 3 mile family hike to Laurel Falls, I averaged over 13K steps per day. I also enjoyed a partner workout with Christian (and Helen ☺️) one afternoon while the big kids played gaga ball with new found camp friends, and Christian and I each did a cold plunge in the 45° river 🥶 this was the first cold plunge for both of us and I’m surprised and proud to say I lasted 2 full minutes! Roadtrip workouts: STRAWBERRY PICKING I’m on a mini vacation and I’m stepping out of the gym for the weekend so I decided to incorporate movement by getting out and about! Yesterday was a beach walk, today I wanted to work the legs some more so we went strawberry picking with my god daughter for her bday. Don’t forget to MOVE YOUR BODY. 🔥 If you’re unsure what to do in your hotel gym, here’s a simple 5 day workout calendar to help! 🙌🏽 Treat each day as an AMRAP (as many rounds as possible). For strength, try to get 3-4 rounds. And cardio, get as many rounds as you can in 45mins. If you have equipment or exercise questions, please feel free to DM us. 🫶 Remember to always start each workout with a warmup that consists of both dynamic exercises (jumping jacks, arm circles or jog) and static stretches (child’s pose or low runner’s lunge). READ THIS [Most power packed read of your day 💁🏽♀️] ⤵ Building a lifestyle around your health and fitness does not have to look like the yo-yo cycle of full restriction when you’re at home then going ALL IN on food and drinks when on vacation. Your health and fitness routine can actually be a lifestyle you maintain throughout all seasons & trips (& also one you enjoy) *gasp*. But, you have to build the structure to make it happen on auto pilot. You’ll also discover along the way what works for you and what doesn’t. But, don’t knock a suggestion till you try it. Here are just a few tips that have always worked for me to keep in mind for a vacation: 🏝️Pack healthy, high protein non-perishable snacks. These make for an easy, guaranteed, high protein option when you’re hungry in between meals and don’t want to show up to the dinner table ravenous, leading to overeating. 🏝️Pack small workout equipment that doesn’t take up much space, such as bands (a few types), sliders and maybe your TRX if you can squish it! 🏝️Determine ahead of time which days you may be able to get in any type of movement– this can be walking, swimming, a workout, a game of pickle ball, etc. 🏝️Aim to establish a morning routine, usually afternoons and evenings are the most poppin time on a vacation depending who you’re with, where you are and the activities on your agenda. 🏝️Find some local fitness classes you may be able to attend and bring a friend – a great way to encourage the group to get in movement too! 🏝️Opt for self transportation when possible–walking or biking may make for a fun afternoon activity! 🏝️Eat until you’re 80% full– this is a great rule of thumb anytime! On vacation it’s so easy to overeat and find yourself feeling overly stuffed before dessert comes out (which I know you don’t want to skip out on). Yes, it’s easy to blame our environment or other people when traveling for work or pleasure based on what we’re doing or what we have available to us - however, let’s get proactive - see what happens! I wanted to get back to my family so kept it short and sweet 🍭 😎A Pyramid Format Looks Like This: Set 1: Perform move 1 for 30 seconds (as many reps as you can), followed by 30 seconds of rest. Set 2: Perform move 1 for 30 seconds and then move 2 for 30 seconds, followed by 30 seconds of rest. Set 3: Perform move 1 for 30 seconds, and then move 2 for 30 seconds, and then move 3 for 30 seconds, followed by 30 seconds of rest. To accommodate inseason busy schedule she shifted to our online platform and is already 50+ workouts in! And that’s just in a couple months time! . . Here’s what we, well I did 🙃 🏋️♀️ Started with a dynamic warmup: clam shells, bridges, body weight squats, hip cars, hamstring openers. Squats: drop set- 15,12,10,8 (go heavier each round) Superset: Leg extension 10 together then 10 Single leg x3 Superset: Seated leg press -12 to single leg press-12 x3 Hamstring curls: Drop sets- 15,12,10,8 Finisher legs 2 min wall sit with 25lb plate CORE finisher:🔥 They didn’t have mats so opted core on the bench 1. Candle sticks- come down really slow! 2 sets of 12 2. Single leg switch in candle stick position - 2 sets 30 seconds on 10 seconds off 3. Knee drives in candle stick - 2 sets of 30 4. Last min: 10 reverse crunches, 10 single leg switch, 10 leg in outs, 20 knee drives. Try not to COME DOWN THE WHOLE TIME 😉 entire workout with warmup took under 45 minutes. On my first cruise and my goal was to make sure I got 4 modified versions of my program in while here. Today was day 4! I am admittedly pretty wimpy when it comes to the cold. And I feel like I’m in good company with that (@barreflowdc ). But when I’m on vacation I try to #run #outside because it’s the best way to see a new place (imo). Today, it was 40 degrees with a windchill of 34, so I bundled up in pants, a sweatshirt, fleece, gloves and a winter hat, and I set out on my run among the lakes. I was feeling pretty tough and hearty until about 2 minutes into my run when I saw an 80ish year old woman in shorts and a t-shirt blowing leaves in her yard. Should you workout on vacation?? 😎🥥🌴🤙🌊 I hate to answer a question with another question, but do you WANT to? Like ACTUALLY want to -- not feel like you HAVE to? Does your body feel good? Are you hungover from those vacation cocktails? If you WANT to, if your body feels good, then sure! If you feel like you HAVE to so you don't "ruin your progress" or if you don't feel so great because you lived it up a little extra last night, then no. One of my favorite odd things to do on a vacation is to find a cool gym with good vibes and check it out, but if I kicked my own ass the day before, I'm not going to force myself to workout.
