#Repost β€’ @whimsybookworm Book 135 of 2019. My first read for #IndianBooksinAugust this year is The Adventures of Kakababu by Sunil Gangopadhyay. Two novella length stories of travel, adventure, mystery and discovery. Set in the late 70s and early 80s, these stories make for perfect cozy reading and nostalgia induced smiles. So fun! Also, on the blog tonight I am talking about my sister @kookycookie and my weekend reads. #repost @whimsybookworm Next up for #femmemarchfest is a collection of stories about homes and the meaning of home in my city- Mumbai. I am one story in and I think this is going to be a fantastic read. I am partial to stories set in Bombay, these stories chronicling the struggles of space and finding a home is metropolis strike a cord. I am so endlessly grateful to have a flat that we own in this city. It is a luxury and one that I don't take for granted. Sure I am running out of space for my precious books but it's still mine. Well, my dad's but still 😍 I get to live here without worrying about exorbitant rent and nosy landlords. . . . #femmemarch #nonfiction #whimsybookworm2019reads #whimsybookworm #readwithhci #igreads #bookstagramfeature #bookstagram #unitedbookstagram #bookishfeatures #bookish #epicreads #currentlyreading #currentreads #readingnow #readwomen #womenwhoread #womensday #womenwriters #indianbooks #indianwriters

#Repost @whimsybookworm with @make_repost ・・・ Book 46 of 2019. This has been my weekend read. A book with magic, mystery, evil lurking around the corner, summer school and forces of good and evil colliding. I haven't read a whole lot of Indian Young Adult lit so I was curious to give this a read. So far in, about 127 pages, I am thoroughly entertained and engrossed in this story. Plus, reading about Bombay, especially the history of Bombay is always fascinating. Hoping to finish this one up before bedtime tonight, so I can start Monday with a new read. . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #ya #yareads #currentlyreading #currentreads #readwithhci #fiction #indianwriting #indianbooks #womenwhoread #womenwriters #WhatMayasaw #bookstagram #unitedbookstagram #booksofinstagram #shabnamminwalla #bookishfeatures #bookworm

Book 205 of 2019. I put a lot of thought into milestone reads, the first read of the year, my birthday read and of course the last read of the year. I am so glad I ended 2019 with this book. It should be mandatory reading for every woman, especially if you have the privilege of raising a daughter. Book 204 of 2019. It felt so good to come back to this warm and familiar world. Back to Botswana, to Mma Ramostwe and Mma Makutsi and Speedy Motors, Zebra Drive and the Orphan Farm. I love this world and it's people. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency is one of my favourite book series and one that I cannot recommend enough. It was so good coming back here. Book 203 of 2019. I started reading this little book way back in February, on my birthday to be precise. I've read it in bits and spurts all year around. Finished it a couple of months ago but never got around to sharing it on here. Well, better late than never. As the title says it's the little book of comfort. Musings. Quotes. Epiphanies. All very trademark #RuskinBond and all good things. 5/5 ✨✨✨✨✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #unitedbookstagram #nonfiction #beautifulbooks #pink #hardback #booksofig #igreads #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #becauseofreading #weekendreads #bookreview #bookrecommendations #cozyreading

Books 200 & 201 of 2019. For my 200th read of the year I wanted to read something a little special. And what's more special than #harrypotter and Hogwarts? So for book 200, I went back to Hogwarts. Stories set in Hogwarts and beyond. Professor McGonagall. Remus Lupin. The four founders of Hogwarts. & Then some. Fun as always. A happy escape to a familiar world. Books 197, 198 and 199 of 2019. Making the most of my #kindleunlimited subscription and reading up a storm. These are a bunch of short stories I read today. The first about a housewife's altered life after her husband's retirement. Very relatable and well written and something we've all seen in the world around us. 4/5 ✨ ✨✨ ✨ The second about a series of everyday conversations among a family. This one was rather insipid. 2/5 ✨ ✨ The third one is a hard hitting tale of female infanticide which was hard to read but powerful. 4/5 ✨ ✨✨ ✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #bibliophile #kindle #kindleandchill #ebooks #shortstories #fiction #indianbooks #indianblogger #indianwriters #postitfortheaesthetic #bookcover #readingtimeπŸ“– #quickreads #becauseofreading #womenwhoread #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #unitedbookstagram #booksaddict #amreading

Books 194, 195 and 196 of 2019. Scary, spooky stories have been my main jam lately. The scarier the better. But, there is no way fiction is scarier than the reality we find ourselves amidst right now. The News is scarier. The stories of strife worrying. But in the middle of it all there is hope. Hope for a better and stronger tomorrow. But till that day dawns, we resist and protest and use our voices and stand tall and we find stories that bring us comfort. . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #igreads #AgathaChristie #readingtimeπŸ“– #readersofinstagram #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #unitedbookstagram #indianbookblogger #shortstories #fiction #becauseofreading #readingwithhci

Book 191, 192 and 193 of 2019. Some books I've read in the last week A young adult thriller about a small-town with a series of killings and girl trying to make sense of it all. Book 190 of 2019. Amal is a 12 year old girl, living in a tiny village in Pakistan. She dreams of reading books, going to college and growing up to be like her favourite teacher in school. She is also the eldest of five girls and has way too many responsibilities on her young shoulders. But life is good. Till an altercation with the most powerful man in her village, the notorious landlord aka zamindar changes everything. School is swapped for servitude. Books for chores. I hadn't read a middle grade book in ages. This was a quick read that sucked me in. Amal and her world, her people just pulled me in. I really loved this book. It took me to a world that was grim yet full of Hope and kindness. 4/5 ✨ ✨✨ ✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #yalit #ya #middlegradebooks #amalunbound #fiction #diversereads #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #igreads #bibliophile #ereader #bookphotography #bookishfeatures #unitedbookstagram #bookstagramindia #pakistanibooks #readwomen #womenwhoread #becauseofreading #womenwriters #flatlay

Books 187 and 188 of 2019. I have been on a short story kick lately. Reading one collection of short after another. It's been good. #ThatCalcuttaThoseBongs was an amazing collection of stories set in Calcutta, mostly in the 70s and 80s. Stories of families, tiny tragedies, colourful characters and some typically Bengali tales I loved it, so much. It reminded me of stories told in my family, of uncles and funny little grandmas. It was wonderful. 4/5 ✨ ✨✨ ✨ #everydaypeople is contemporary stories set in Bangalore, one of my homes. Stories of young couples, the rich and poor divide, IT jobs and musings of a burgeoning modern city co-existing with a slower older city. This was a really short and quick read. 3/5 ✨ ✨✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #kindleunlimited #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #indianbooks #shortstories #ebooks #becauseofreading #womenwhoread #womenwriters #bookrecommendations #bookreview #fiction #booksbooksbooks #bookishfeatures #booksofinstagram #nothingisordinary #literaturelovers #readersofinstagram #litwithindianlit

Book 185 of 2019. #Conviction by #DeniseMina is this month's pick for @reesesbookclub a book club I often look at for recommendations and they never let me down. And this month too they've picked a total winner of a read. Conviction is the story of Anna, a housewife and mother of two little girls. An obsessive reader and podcast enthusiast. On a day that her carefully curated life falls apart, she turns to a podcast for comfort and chances upon a case involving an old friend. Together with a former popstar for company, Anna embarks on a journey to unearth the truth about an infamous murder and a rich woman who might be behind it all. Book 183 of 2019. A Death in the Himalayas by Udayan Mukherjee. Sorry, the cover was a pain to photograph πŸ™ˆ A British activist is murdered in the quiet village in the Kumaon hills. The list of people that wished her gone is a mile long. Irate men whose violence she staunchly opposed. The local corrupt MLA. And even some close personal relationships were in turmoil. Enter Neville Wadia, an ex-top-cop from Bombay who has retired to the hills looking for peace and quiet, only to find himself back in the middle of death and violence. Well-written and perfectly paced, this book was a good read. And the setting just made me all kinds of happy. I mean the hills and village come alive within these pages. The characters are well-written and perfectly human. However, guessed the perpetrator and the motive at the 15% 🀦 which is never great. Still, this was a fun read, made better by buddy reading with my sister @kookycookie 3/5 ✨✨✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #thrillers #mystery #fiction #indianbooks #indianwriters #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #unitedbookstagram #ebooks #becauseofreading

Book 181 of 2019. Stayed up way past my bedtime reading this beautiful little book. Set in Pune, this is the story of Janaki and Ajoba. Family friends turned into a family unit and the circumstances that lead them to this unique family set up. Infused with honesty, slice of life and a deep understanding of a city/culture in flux. This was a joy to read. Book 177 of 2019. What a book! Just finished this amazing story of love, activism, loss, rage, grief and shame and family and cried buckets. So good. Set in 1989 in New York City, bang in the middle of the AIDS epidemic, this is the story of Reza, Art and Judy. A love story but so much more. Full of heart and warmth and wit and the fight of human rights. A story of the queer community fighting tooth and nail. An important story, a chapter from history we cannot afford to forget. Book 176 of 2019. Books about Books are some of my absolute favourite things in the world. This one has a trifecta of things I adore. Books. Bombay. Bandra. Ah!!! Anddddd it's set in the early 2000s, a special time in my life. This book is nothing short of a treat. Plus it mainly revolves around Fiza, our 22 year old protagonist opening her own bookshop. Book 174 of 2019. The Tattooist of Auschwitz was one of those books that stay with you long after you've turned the last page. Cilka was a character that caught my attention and I wish we'd find out more about her life and I guess a lot of people had the same feeling. We did get a glimpse of her future in the last few pages, and we know that it wasn't that rosy. I guess which is why I've left this book unread for this long. This book is sad, brutal and heart breaking, I mean it's set in a Russian labour camp! It's hard to read but I want to know more about Cilka and her journey after this hell. Book 171 of 2019. It's only the second day of November and I've already finished one book! Yay me! I'll be honest the only reason I picked up this book, and the way in which I found out about it's very existence was through the Zee 5 web series I binged recently-- Bhram. I saw that it was based on a book and I wanted to read it. Plus the ebook was only for 57 bucks. So I figured why not! Well...this is one of the rare cases of the film...well the webseries in this case being better than the book. They were both vastly different. And the writing wasn't the best. There were several grammatical errors and the it was just not something I'd read normally. Also there are several massive errors while talking about mental illness and therapy and treatment which is a personal pet peeve of mine. 🀦 The story itself isn't bad. 2.5/5 ✨ ✨ The webseries is much better. Book 168 of 2019. Ruta Sepetys is a writer whose work I immensely enjoy. I've read every single book she's written and I've LOVED them all. Maybe not equally, but I have loved them all. And I cannot recommend them enough. All of them are gems. When I found out she had a new book out I bought it without really even reading the plot summary. She is an auto buy author for me. Seriously, pick up her books, any of them and lose yourself in another time and place. And like always, she doesn't disappoint. Set in Spain in 1957, right in the middle of Francisco Franco's dictatorship, it shows life in Spain in plain and unflinching honesty. Life with several freedoms curtailed and a strict moral and religious code to adhere to is no mean feat. I am learning so much about this time in history. I will be doing a deeper dive into this time and place. Funny how our history books often talk about Hitler and Mussolini but not nearly as much about Franco. I am probably going to finish this by tonight and will share a proper review on the blog. . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #rutasepetys #thefountainsofsilence #ya #yalit #historicalfiction #history #literaturelovers #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #igreads #womenwriters #womenwhoread #unitedbookstagram #bibliophile #favouritethings #bookishfeatures #fiction #readersofinstagram #bookstagram #ereader #currentlyreading

Book 165 of 2019. The Confession is essentially a story of 3 women. Elise a 20 year old in 1983 who meets Connie, a charismatic 38 year old writer of repute. They fall for each other and become enamoured with each other. Then Elise disappears. Leaving behind a baby. Rose, who in 2017 is looking for her mum, Elise. But Elsie is nowhere to be found. Connie, now old and arthritic is around and Rose inserts herself in Connie's life, to hopefully find some answers about her mum. I've been buddy reading this book with my sister @kookycookie and we've both been hooked. It's well written, immersive and moves swiftly from the 80s to now. It's the perfect book for fall. However, it's not a thriller in the strictest sense. There is a mystery, what with a missing woman, but it's more a look into love and belonging and being authentically yourself...or on the other hand being utterly unsure of who you are. Interesting and thought provoking. Also, l love me some books about books and writers. 3.5/5 ✨ ✨✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #booksbooksbooks #bookreview #theconfession #jessieburton #readersofinstagram #bibliophile #bookstagram #unitedbookstagram #bookstagramindia #ebooks #ereader #kindle #bookblogger #bookreviews #becauseofreading #womenwriters #womenwhoread #booksofig #bookloversday #indianblogger

Book 161 of 2019. I read this book in under 3 hours on a Sunday morning. I was hooked from the word go. It's the story of two girls, living very different lives. Anna lives in Florida with her religious zealot of a mother. She isn't allowed a phone, laptop or even friends really. She has just turned 18 and is beginning to question a few things about her claustrophobic life. Rosie is 16 and lives in England with her parents and little brother and a gaping hole where her elder sister should have been. 15 years ago while on a holiday to the States, Rosie's elder sister was snatched from an amusement park and alllll the publicity and headlines notwithstanding no one has a clue as to where 3 year old Emma disappeared. But Rosie wants answers, she needs to find her sister. Anna too wants to know more. Reminiscent of the Madeleine McCann case, this book kept me hooked and was a quick and good read. 4/5 ✨✨✨✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #thrillers #mystery #bibliophile #ereader #agirlcalledanna #fiction #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #igreads #unitedbookstagram #booklovers #bookphotography #ya #yalit #quickreads #booknerd #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #reads #womenwhoread #womenwriters

Book 160 of 2019. What I read on Holiday. I picked up The Swallows thinking it'd be the perfect read for the hills. Set in a prep school in 2009, it chronicles the life of the students and some of the teachers. Power struggles. Dynamics. Dating. Secrets. 'Boys being boys.' Misogyny. Girls helping girls. Girls standing up for themselves. Sadly, this just didn't work for me. It was too much. Too many, far too many characters. None of them particularly likeable. I just didn't connect. Didn't grow to care about any of the people in this book. Not for me. I did however enjoy the writing. 2.5/5 ✨ ✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #yalit #youngadult #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #igreads #bookreview #bookreviewer #theswallows #ereader #booklovers #booknerdigans #bookworms #fiction #bookphotography #cozyreading #sweaterweather

Book 158 of 2019. Between packing and getting the house in order, this book is keeping me company and constantly holding my interest. Truth be told, I am having a hard time putting it aside to focus on packing. A story about immigrants in America and the constant tussle between home and away. Of a sudden death that affects multiple people in surprising ways. A story about sisters, music, love and identity and race and bigotry. Thank you! Reposted from @whimsybookworm (@get_regrann) - Book 157 of 2019. "As a child, laughter is all you need as a proof of happiness. As a child you don't know there are so many different kinds of laughter- like different varieties of birds. Some are flightless." "How cruel to quarter a woman in so many ways. The cruellest was this: being a mother. No matter how hard you struggled against it, it changed you, this whole business of motherhood." "Our own hearts judged us as sinners before anyone else did." Book 156 of 2019. Reminiscent of retro slasher films (which are some of my favourite things in the world) Final Girls is was the only #RileySager book I hadn't read. 3 women that survive serial killers and are christened Final Girls by the media. And now, years later the first final girl is dead. Are the other two safe? Is someone after the final girls? I enjoyed this book, the premise more than anything else. But I will say, I did begin to loose interest by the middle of the book and wished the pace would pick up. The little twists in the end were nice enough but I now get why this book has such mixed reviews. The authors other two books are way, way better. 3/5 ✨ ✨✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #finalgirls #thrillers #mystery #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #booksofig #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #reads #unitedbookstagram #booknerdigans #booklovers #bookworm #bookishfeatures #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookworms #womenwhoread

Book 155 of 2019. The Carpet Weaver is among many other things a coming of age story, set in Afghanistan in 1977 and then on out. Set amidst a society on a cusp of war and Carnage. It's about a young boy dealing with his queerness, learning to accept himself for who he truly in and falling helplessly and hopelessly in love for the first time. I liked this book for it's pretty unique subject matter, a young gay boy growing up in a country that doesn't tolerate queerness. The anguish and stress and the self doubt that comes with inhabiting a world like this was captured so well. It's heartbreaking. But other than that I'm afraid this book didn't do much else for me. I guess I was underwhelmed, I had hoped for more. I appreciate this story but I didn't love it. 3/5 ✨ ✨✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #thecarpetweaver #fiction #historicalfiction #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #booknerdigans #booklovers #bookworm #bookishfeatures #igreads #readersofinstagram #amreading #literaturelovers #lgbtqia #lgbtq #becauseofreading #womenwhoread #bookblog #bookblogger #whimsybookworm

Book 153 of 2019. You often find yourself in a particularly peculiar spot if you buy as many books as I do, especially ebooks, you tend to forget the exact premise of a book. You remember vaguely that it sounded good and something you were keen on reading but you don't quite remember the specific details. Nothing a little Googling can't fix. It's the most delicious of first world problems if there ever was. Then there are books that you start reading at 2 AM when sleep eludes you and you can't be arsed about looking up the plot of the book you've jumped into. You just want to read. And it's good, so good going in blind and discovering for yourself and being reminded of why you bought the book in first place. So here I am, drinking chai and reading this gorgeous book. At 15% in, it's about sisters, skiing, loss, grief, family, escape, Bueno Aires and then some. It's good and I am glad I am going into it pretty blind. Past me made good bookish decisions that present me is very grateful for. . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #literaturelovers #literature #americanliterature #wecameheretoforget #AndreaDunlop #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #booksandtea #booksandchai #chroniclesofchai #booksofig #unitedbookstagram #bookstagram #womenwriters #womenwhoread #becauseofreading #currentlyreading #currentreads #amreading #booknerdigans #booklovers #chai

Book 151 of 2019. The last few days have been gloriously rainy and grey, aka perfect weather for psychological thrillers. Between my sister and me, we've read all of #sharilapena 's books. And for most part, they are hugely entertaining and engaging and unputdow-able. This one #someoneweknow was no different. It's for most part, a domestic drama set in a typical American suburb. A beautiful young woman goes missing and throws a lot of people under suspicion. It's a story of secrets, marriage, changing relationships, raising teenagers, affairs and suburban life. It was a book I enjoyed reading and couldn't put it down. I read most of it one afternoon. I did guess who the killer was by the time I was 30% in but it didn't ruin the book for me. Pick it up if you enjoy well-written and well-paced thrillers about families and communities. 3/5 ✨✨✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #thrillers #mystery #ebooks #quickreads #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #booksofig #igreads #bookstagram #unitedbookstagram #bibliophile #bookishfeatures #bookphotography #womenwriters #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookreviewer #indianbookblogger #mumbaiblogger #bookstagramindia #americanliterature

Book 150 of 2019. I put a fair amount of thought into picking my last read for #IndianBooksinAugust and my 150th read of the year. I wanted to pick a book that I was sure I'd like. And so far, #BuddhadevaBose has never disappointed. Plus, I started this month with a Bengali book- The Adventures of Kakababu, so it makes some kind of sense to end it with one too. So, I am ending August and reaching my Good Reads goal for 2019 with #BlackRose and Ranajit Dutta and his cynicism, with Dhaka pre-partition, with young love, with idealism and hopefully so much more. Book 147 of 2019. Half way through this collection of inter-connected short stories set in Kashmir. It is everything I had expected it to be, intense, heartfelt, stirring and unsettling. Some stories are better than others. It's been a mixed bag of a read so far. I've read two incredible books based in and about Kashmir this month, The Far Field by Madhuri Vijay and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy. Both of these took my breath away. Book 146 of 2019. My companion this weekend. #TheBodyMyth by #RheeaMukherjee This is an odd book. But I like odd books, so its fine. It's all good. Mira, a young widow still grappling with the death of her husband, gets involved with a married couple- Rahil & Sara. The wife who is sick, with an unnamed, undiagnosed condition and the husband who is seemingly devoted. I am half way through and fairly intrigued. My shrink self was screaming Munchausen from chapter one itself and so much in this book appeals to my psychology loving heart. Also, books about relationships, especially complicated ones are some of my favourite things to read. Talking about this book and other reading plans on the blog. Book 145 of 2019. I am a big believer in the magic of the universe. Especially when it comes to the magic of words and stories. I truly, 100% believe that books find you at the perfect time, when you are well and truly ready for them. There is a certain magic to the timing of all things, and most certainly to the timing of when a book finds it way to us. Or us to them. Read at the wrong time, even the most poignant and brilliant book could leave you underwhelmed. But the right book and the right frame of time and just the right timing, BOOM that's magic right there. I had The Ministry of Utmost Happiness sit unread on my Kindle for close to 2 years. To be honest, I wasn't quite sure if I'd ever read it or enjoy it. But I wanted to keep it on hand just in case... maybe... ..you never know. Some point over the last weekend, a fitful sleepless night led me to her. To Anjum. To Tilotamma. To Biplop Dasgupta. To Saddam Hussein. To Zainab. To Old Delhi. Kashmir. Bastar. To Grief. To Loss. To a world, a country and a people that are mine but are slowly morphing into something I don't quite recognise anymore. This book found me and held me at the right time. 5/5 ✨✨✨ ✨✨ Brilliant. . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #literaturelovers #literature #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #bookishfeatures #igreads #becauseofreading #womenwhoread #womenwriters #theministryofutmosthappiness #arundhatiroy #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookreviewer #igreads #readersofinstagram #kindleandchill #IndianBooksinAugust #indianbooks #indianwriters

Book 144 of 2019. Spent my Independence Day with this book. Why? Because Rushdie is a genius. That's why. Three essays on the idea of home and what home means. The migrant experience, racial bias and even a little love story. It's been a while since I last read Rushdie and this little book reminded me that I need to read more of his work. Book 143 of 2019. Next up for #indianbooksinaugust I am reading about a period in modern Indian history that I know very little about- The Emergency. Book 142 of 2019. "And things will mellow. And all this love will turn to friendship tinged forever. After that, there will only be accidental meetings, a stray email and a long lost text." "The ones we pretend to ignore are the ones we are most aware of." Nine perspectives on the same woman. Nine people who have loved her or have been loved by her. A love story in nine parts. Nameless people and places. To call this unique would be an understatement. Its unique AF. It's also succinct, beautiful, moving, real and sincere and atmospheric. Book 141 of 2019. Reading this book felt like I was spending time with my Thamma (paternal grandmother). Stories about Gods and Goddesses, Asuras and their unending pursuit of immortality, sages, Kings, animals, yagnas, meditations, boons and curses. Stories of the Trinity of Hindu Gods. Brahma. Vishnu. Shiva. More importantly though reading these stories felt like I was stepping back to my childhood. It was like being back in the Lake Gardens house and in my Thamma's large antique four poster bed. If I closed my eyes and tried hard, I could almost hear her voice, the silence of summer afternoons in Calcutta and the occasion bark of Munni (the pet Pomeranian) and the whispered conversations of my older cousins. That for me the sheer magic of stories and books. 4/5 ✨ ✨✨ ✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #IndianBooksinAugust #SudhaMurty #mythology #myth #history #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #indianbooks #indianblogger #womenwhoread #womenwriters #becauseofreading #igreads #bookishfeatures #quickreads #childrensbooks #kidlit #culture #musings #writersofinstagram #booklovers #bookworm #booksofig #vsco #vscoindia

Book 138 of 2019. My fourth book for #IndianBooksinAugust is the gorgeous The Far Field by Madhuri Vijay. It's a story about a grief stricken girl on a journey to find an oddly important figure from her childhood. Navigating loss and a sense of ennui Shalini travels from her home Bangalore all the way to Kashmir (this is such a timely read) and connects to a host of people in the valley. I have been reading this all day and have been in a daze. The best kind of daze, brought on by beautiful writing and haunting imagery and some wonderful people. I am smitten and hooked. Book 137 of 2019. My third read for #IndianBooksinAugust was The Deadly Dozen by Anirban Bhattacharyya. A true-crime, non-fiction read about twelve of India's most notorious serial killers and murders most foul. I love all things serial killers. And I know that sounds bad and super sketchy. I know. But of course, I hate them and abhor their actions. They are vile and scary and I hope to God none of us has to ever come across them. πŸ™ But...at the same time, they are fascinating. In a twisted and macabre way. My interest in serial killers is one of the many reasons why I choose to get a degree in Clinical Psychology. It's why Criminal Minds will always be a show I adore. This book does a good job of chronicling some of the worst India has seen. Scary. Unsettling. Book 134 of 2019. "The worst killing is that which kills the joy we get from life." "Those who wish to learn magic ought to begin by looking around them." My last read of July was Hippie by Paulo Coelho. My second ever book by the author, I read The Alchemist over 15 years ago and found it too woolly for my liking. This one was a little bit a cover buy, but mostly fueled by my love for all things Hippie. If I could travel back in time, I'd love to go back to the era of long boho dresses, travelling all over the world, yearning for peace and love and connection. For reasons I don't fully comprehend, I've always been drawn to these people and this movement. From the fashion to ideology to the general vibe. This book does take you there. A group of strangers on the Magic Bus, going from the Netherlands to Nepal. We get a close look inside the mind of our author, this book is largely autobiographical and some other stories as well. Enjoyable. Atmospheric. Philosophical. But the ending felt rushed and incomplete. 3/5 ✨ ✨✨ . . . #whimsybookworm2019reads #hippie #paulocoelho #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #igreads #unitedbookstagram #translatedbooks #bestseller #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #bookreview #bookrecommendations #readersofinstagram #vsco #vscocam #beautifulbooks #hardback #booknerdigans #booklovers #bookphotography #becauseofreading #whimsybookworm

Books 131, 132 & 133 of 2019. Three books I read over the last week but didn't get around to sharing on here. After The End is a gut wrenching and thought provoking book about life and right to live with dignity. It makes you think about what qualifies as living? Merely being alive or having a quality life. Reminded me of old school Jodi Picoult books I devoured at one point. However, if you are a parent, I'd approach this book with caution. It has a terminally ill toddler and makes for some difficult reading. 3/5 ✨✨✨ My Friend Anna- Next I read a book about a true life con-artist. A con woman who cheated a lot of people out of a lot of money. Told by an erstwhile friend who was duped as well. Interesting, but could have done with sharper editing and some serious trimming. 2.5/5 ✨✨ Then She Vanishes by Claire Douglas- A thriller about old friends, bad choices and sisterhood. I loved it. Thoroughly enjoyable and gripping and well written. Plus, it's partially set in the 90s and that's always fun. 4/5 ✨✨✨✨ I love catching up on my reads here.
