You, though, are as beautiful as light splitting through glass. ‘We have a summer.’ ‘You have a summer to make me laugh.’ And a summer can be a lifetime. That one imagined kiss is worth a thousand real ones. I say this also to console myself. I have never been happier. I have never been sadder. ~ Janice Pariat, the Nine Chambered Heart Love reading this remarkable novel and its enchanting lines, where nine distinct characters recall their unique connections with a woman. What has truly helped me as a person, as a writer, is being able to access therapy, and coming to learn how to loosen the grip of reality on one’s self... The realization that we exist amidst many (often contesting) narratives was transformative for me, and this greatly informed my writing.' @janicepariat talks about her scintillating novels #EverythingTheLightTouches—now available as a paperback—and #TheNineChamberedHeart in this unmissable #BetweenTheLines conversation. #HarperBroadcast Read the complete conversation on our blog—link in bio!

The Nine Chambered Heart - Janice Pariat Have you ever pondered why everyone we meet perceives us differently? Have you ever noticed how others build partial ideas of us and how we sometimes adjust to the parts they want us to play? The Nine Chambered Heart unfolds the life of an unnamed girl from her teenage years to middle age. The story is narrated from the perspectives of nine individuals who loved or admired her during various stages of her life. Her identity remains undisclosed, including her name and the cities she travels to. What truly captivated me was the second-person narrative style. We come to know her only through the fragmented descriptions provided by the nine characters. Some perceive her as affectionate and stubborn, while others view her as impulsive, aesthetic, impatient, selfish, or self-centered. Each character paints a different portrait of her in the nine distinct chapters. What particularly intrigued me were the chapter titles, such as "The Saint," "The Butcher," and "The Florist." As you progress through the chapters, the significance of these titles becomes clearer. Despite the narrative completely revolving around the unnamed woman, I find myself still puzzled about her true essence. Even after encountering nine different perspectives on her, I lack a complete understanding of her character. I can only piece together fragments, much like the nine characters, and I, in a sense, become the tenth character with my own unique perspective shaped by what I've read. This is what makes the book fascinating. We never truly grasp her complete identity, only forming combined interpretations of what she might be like.  The unnamed woman is a complex figure who never experienced love and care in her childhood, perpetually yearning for love. When she finally finds it, she often leaves those who care for her due to her free-spirited and independent nature. While I acknowledge the beauty of the book, relying on the perspectives of those who loved and admired her, at times I couldn't help but wish for at least one chapter where she could express her own thoughts, revealing what lies in her mind and articulating her true needs in life. Cont'd👇

Janice Pariat weaves a mosaic of emotions with her pen. The Nine Chambered Heart is a novel composed of nine stories. Stories revolve around a protagonist's relationships. We don't know the name of the protagonist or other characters either. Janice doesn't give us names of people or places. We know that the protagonist is a woman and the book captures many facades of her relationship with different people in her life. Her art teacher, boyfriend, an elderly married lover, a female hostel mate, a bar acquaintance, a student, a publisher, her husband and an old acquaintance. All relationships are peripheral except the husband. An enigmatic woman who enraptures people around her but she is restive "you seem to be a woman to whom something is always about to happen". Complexity of human emotions flows through such simple, almost poetic sentences that it feels like a poem recited slowly. @janicepariat #bookstagram #booklover #fiction #novel #theninechamberedheart #janicepariat #newdiscovery #bookstagram #review

Picture this: You find yourself standing in a bookshop or a library, surrounded by countless books waiting to be picked. As you let your fingers trace their spines, a title or a cover catches your eye 🤓 In a world full of uncertainty & carefully considered choices, there's a special magic in the impulsive act of choosing a book based on its title or cover. It's like taking a leap of faith. It's a reminder that your instinct can lead you to unexpected, delightful places and sometimes things just are as good as they look. Judging a book by its cover can be the start of a beautiful adventure. 📖✨❤️ P.S - Proudly presenting some books we picked solely because of their covers/titles & loved to bits! Book Review Book - The Nine Chambered Heart Author - Janice Pariat Rating - ⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.5/5) It is a story told in nine parts or nine parts of our protagonist's life portrayed from different perspectives. From a school teacher to some lover in a different country, this book brings to life the perceptions of these people about our main character. Written in second person, it highlights these nine parts and their views, each touching on a different phase of the protagonist's life, not completing the story, yet fitting into her life in a mysterious way. It is incomplete, in the sense that we never get to actually know our lead character and her life, but isn't it similar to reality in that sense? We get 100 perspectives about a person around us, whether or not we interact with them. We never actually know their entire story yet in a mix of perspectives we make sense of who they are. We all are main characters of our own lives. We know our story in its entirety. But when it comes to the perception of people surrounding us, on our interactions, on our life, we don't know everything but we somehow make sense of it and live life behind the curtains of our perception. This book is a representation of those perceptions and we are left to make sense of all the characters' lives in our own unique way. It focuses more on people our lead character meets and her romantic prospects. In my opinion, there could have been much more to the story, much more depth. The writing is beautiful but the characters could have been more diverse and interesting, such that they could throw more light on our lead as well as have their own defined characteristics. #theninechamberedheart #perception #bookreview

The Nine-Chambered Heart by Janice Pariat. . (Not a review, just some thoughts) . This book reads like a bunch of love letters to an unnamed protagonist living in unnamed cities. She grows up and forms a shape and identity in the readers' minds between the covers of the book. She isn't always likeable. She is what people would call 'hard to love'; someone flawed, just like any one of us, but deeply human. In some of the chapters, you want to sit her down, talk sense into her head, or even yell at her in frustration. In others, you understand her. You see why she does what she does even if you condemn her decisions. Sometimes, you find yourself standing on a moral high ground. You shake your head and tut-tut because you find her behaviour deplorable. But you get a feeling that she wouldn't care if she knew. . You call her selfish, but maybe it is self-defense or self-preservation? You tend to forget her past and what she has gone through. You forget she can't defend herself because whatever you know of her is solely through the eyes of others. When you remember, doubts seep in and you begin to question if you have been too harsh to judge her. When you remember that there is always another side to a tale, you wonder if what you know of her is the truth. In the end, you are nowhere closer to answering these questions about who she is than when you started. After all, how much do we know of someone? Is our version of them the truth or just a part of it? . I absolutely loved reading The Nine Chambered heart. From the fluid, lilting writing to the vivid imagery it paints without ever resorting to purple prose to the questions it begs you to ask yourself, this book left a lasting impression on me. I have loved Pariat's short story collection, Boats on Land, in the past and this book cemented her status as one of my favourites. I have been following @janicepariat for a while where her posts continue to give me care, kindness or even companionship over time. I chose the Nine Chambered Heart or rather the book chose me which I asked to my beloved sister to be presented for my birthday. It is an interesting narrative where nine characters recall the stories from their perspective about the relationship with the same woman. This book gently whispers us it is easy to love and we can't put love in a box with the rhythm we could listen sliding through words. I asked Janice "What is love to you?" once and she replied "Kindness". It reverberates over the book too...❤️ #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #instagram #igreads #photooftheday #booklover #theninechamberedheart #janicepariat #literature #booknerd #bookaholic #kindness #love

"Tristezza de fiori. The sadness of flowers. You look at me, and cannot take your eyes away from mine. You repeat the words. The sadness of flowers." 🫀The Nine-Chambered Heart Janice Pariat 🇮🇳 When someone says, "I know you like the back of my hand", I have this urge to pull out a 100 page question paper made with the intention to fail the person sitting for the test. No, you don't. It's sweet at best and arrogant at its worst. You don't know me. The sense of bewilderment is almost palpable. We live as fragments. Our entire existence is fragmented. Like a mirror broken into a million pieces, with each shard reflecting a different part of our personas. So, saying "I know you like the back of my hand" is no different than saying, "Darling, I don't know a thing about you." This book revolves around this idea of fragments which it explores through the portrait painted of a woman as seen through the eyes of nine different individuals. For each of these nine characters, the unnamed woman represents something different, not because the woman herself is incessantly dynamic but because of the subjective lenses used by the people to view her. None of them really know her. She remains a mystery to those around her. I was afraid that she would turn into a manic-pixie dreamgirl sort of character but thankfully that didn't happen. She was flawed. She was human. She loved. I think the book manages to capture that essense of the human capacity to give love even though we may fail to accept it sometimes. Pariat's words flows like a clear stream of water. It is neither too laid-back nor too complicated to the point of inaccessibility. I think I could read anything she writes because there's a deep sense of empathy and respect for the human condition to love in her use of language.

THE NINE CHAMBERED HEART - @janicepariat , published by @harpercollinsin 🫀 I don't know her name. Neither do I know where she is from. I have t met her. What I know of her, I have pieced together through the accounts of people who spent time with her. Do I really know her then? 🫀 You see, that's difficult to answer. I know her through the accounts of those who thought they knew her. And from their nine perspectives, I formed the "10th chamber". My own pieced together puzzle of "her". She has the alluring aura around her. People only know of her what she wants them to know, but gives the impression that he life is an open book. My interpretation of her is definitely flawed. Because I put her picture together through other people's fragmented and flawed as mine, interpretation of her as a person. 🫀 She is like that snowflake. One moment you have got her and then you unfurl your fingers to look, and she's melted away. Don't we all do that? I am sure each one of us is a nameless "he/she" in many people's lives. Good or bad. There's beauty in that... Isn't there? 🫀 I loved the smooth writing and elegance of Pariat's writing. Whimsical, but grounded, it was an absolute pleasure to read. She is there in all of us; at least a tiny particle of her. 🫀 #qotd: what 3 words would you use to describe yourself? 🫀 #theninechamberedheart #janicepariat #she #bookreview #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #bibliophile #bougainvillea #reader #explorepage #booktok #bookrecommendations #white #paperback

Beaches are my thing. Always have been. Always will be. And calicut beach will always remain my favourite. 🌊 But, this post isn't about beaches, it's about the number of books I decided to read simultaneously. I am not reading all of those books in the pile. But the number is at a healthy 6. 🌊 I have already read a couple of books in the stack, the reviews of which are pending and will be up soon. I read a malayalam book after ages; it took me a lot of time, because i read faster and understand English books better. Not because i find malayalam difficult, but because I have read English books mostly throughout my life. 🌊 The book in question is "Ladies coupe athava theendari vandi" by @shahina_k_rafiq , the review will be up soon, but I will say this, that is one underrated book. I really liked reading it. 🌊 The other book that I finished is "the nine chambered heart" by @janicepariat . This book has a lot of fan following and is on many TBRs, if you have it, read it. 🌊 I am currently reading "Babel" for our book club, and "Tongue in cheek" by @akhyrunnisa as well. 🌊 I am a big time mood reader. So there are no monthly hopefuls with me. So let's see if I can finish a few of those books this month. Also, going on a book ban. Because I did go overboard a little since January. I have got @thelittlegraycells to keep track on me. Let see how that goes. 🌊 #qotd: what is your current read and why did you pick that particular book? 🌊 #bookstagram #booklover #beach #bookpile #calicutbeach #babel #thebelljar #theninechamberedheart #tongueincheek #verity #thehouseintheceruleansea #thedarkroom #rknarayan #nest #explorepage

𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕟𝕚𝕟𝕖 𝕔𝕙𝕒𝕞𝕓𝕖𝕣𝕖𝕕 𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕣𝕥 𝙰𝚞𝚝𝚑𝚘𝚛: @janicepariat I have wanted to read this book for a long time and i was so happy that i received it in my mail by @harpercollinsin and @janicepariat ... So, thank you so much for that. In the blurb, there was this line that attracted me so much. It said, " 𝚆𝚎 𝚙𝚒𝚎𝚌𝚎 𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚝𝚘𝚐𝚎𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛 , 𝚖𝚞𝚌𝚑 𝚊𝚜 𝚠𝚎 𝚍𝚘 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑 𝚘𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚜 𝚒𝚗 𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚕𝚒𝚟𝚎𝚜, 𝚒𝚗 𝚒𝚗𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚕𝚎𝚝𝚎 𝚋𝚞𝚝 𝙸𝚕𝚕𝚞𝚖𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚜𝚕𝚒𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚜. " Because, isn't it so true? I definitely thought about it, like "wow! I wonder what people i met thought of me in bits and pieces! " I've never read a book with such a different idea of narration. It tells the story of a woman who has touched the lives of 9 different persons. And not just touched, how they were part of her life for even a small amount of time. How we got to know the perceptions of these people regarding one person. It was such an amazing experience for me. And the most impressive thing was, every one was unnamed in an unnamed place, just vivid descriptions to let us imagine... "Because life is like that, isn't it? One cannot stop its ebb and flow. You step into the current and whatever's in your path will cross you and touch you and sometimes stay." . . The Nine Chambered Heart by Janice Pariat is a fictional autobiography. It is an evocative and mesmerising tale of a nameless woman who is described by Nine people who have fleetingly crossed paths with her. These characters, at different points have either been in love with her or have been loved by her. These short-lived experiences of love take place across nameless yet familiar places around the world. The characters are nameless. They are given unique names like The Saint, The Butcher and The Lighthouse Keeper, etc. . My Take: After going through a few pages, I remember thinking to myself how this book felt like a long musing, somewhat like loose pieces of poetry sewn together. There are places in this book that gives the feeling of timelessness; it's as if the time just stands still in some moments. There is no sense of time and location even though there are hints about where the story is taking place through vague descriptions of locations. It kind of gives an eerily beautiful feeling and I enjoyed it very much; to have a vague idea and still be unaware of the surroundings at the same time. This book is an ode to love and its various forms. It smashes the preconceived notion that loving is not easy. The woman in the novel begs to differ. "It's easy to love," she says, quoting the famous lines of Anaïs Nin that also is quoted by the author at the beginning of the novel. We have all been in love and not all of it is beautiful and rosy as shown in the movies. This book reminds us of that while also keeping a hope in us alive that love can be found anywhere and love stories can be lived a thousand times or more. Apart from love, this book also talks about the fragmentation of our identity and how different people in our lives might know a different version of us. I loved this aspect of the novel as it makes this story a truly contemporary account of love in modern times. . . #the_boi_poka #thebookworm #bookblog #bookreview #booksynopsis #theninechamberedheart #janicepariat

BOOK REVIEW 📖 The Nine Chambered Heart by Janice Pariat @janicepariat A book about identities and perspectives. 🌸It is a compendium of perspectives of nine people, all of whom fall in love with the protagonist, an unnamed girl in an unnamed town. 🌸The language is lyrical and beautiful. It flows like poetry and will remain etched in your memory forever. I visualised the paper swans scene a 1000 times and it was mesmerizing every single time. 🌸There are no names in the books. Instead, every character has been named "The Saint", "The Butcher", "The Caretaker" etc. symbolising the attributes of these characters. 🌸A riveting read which will make you think about how we can't be the same for every individual. What deep, sad ecstasy called love. In this mostly irredeemable world, all we have, as it seems, is each other and the sky, which is perhaps saying the same thing twice. And yet we find ways to be cruel to each other, to hurt each other, but through all of it, also love each other—which, again, is probably saying the same thing thrice. Rarely does a book does what this one does. It’s almost hurtful how emotionally intelligent and informed it is—all of which, of course, has to be credited to the astuteness of its writing. Nine stories that are tied to each other in the most graceful yet mad way: Nine love stories, all about the same woman—unnamed, erratic and irresistible. Nine lovers recount their feelings for the protagonist of the novel, and yet for all their visions and perceptions of her, it’s never easy to understand the motivations behind her behaviour. But really, that’s not the point at all. We are not meant to understand each other, we only think we do. Intimacy is everything but understanding, it seems. There are always surprising heartbreaks, even after years of ‘knowing’ someone, even after many, many kisses and hugs that feel like sunny spring days in our bones. But maybe, Pariat’s superb book suggests, that’s the point. Why do we keep our hearts open, tear ourselves bare, skulk morosely for this thing called love? Maybe because it’s all worth it, after all. Maybe what we expect is also an odd, sad comfort—for someone to tell us that our hearts are feline in some way. Having nine lives. The thing with hearts is, they’re almost always breaking. Even in moments of tenderness. It’s all they know, it feels (or mine does, at least). And maybe breaking is necessary, to have these many chambers built. But oh, what tiresome, maddening sorrow to deal with, plurally. An unforgettable, incredibly fragile book. Nothing gets ‘[the] deep, aching need for love’ better on paper, in my opinion. Read it, as if your life depends on it (it does). #TheNineChamberedHeart by @janicepariat @harpercollinsin

The Nine Chambered Heart by Janice Pariat: 'So I choose to travel, on my own, because I wanted to learn how it is all right to journey alone.' Somewhere in you I sense, like in all of us, a deep, aching need for love. This was such an interesting read! This is a story of an unnamed woman told from the perspective of her nine lovers/admirers she met in each phase of her life. The chapters have interesting names like "The Saint", and "The florist" for each character, and by the end of each chapter, you know exactly why. Every person observes different characteristics of the woman. Some find her sweet and loving whereas, some find her self- centered and complicated. And from these characters we see her growing from a teenager to an independent woman. It amazes me that although the entire book was about the woman, it felt like I hardly knew her. I liked how free-spirited she was, loved cats, and loved to travel. But I wished she could be more vocal once in a while about what she really wanted. I loved the parts when each character notices little things about her. Like how she picks up flowers on her way, or how her cheeks are flushed. Although it was beautifully written, after a few chapters it felt a bit monotonous to me. Altogether it was a good read and I would like to read more books by the author.❤️ ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 #theninechamberedheart #bookreviews #janicepariat #literaryfiction #quotestagram #romancebook #explorepage #bookstagrammer

THE NINE CHAMBERED HEART - @janicepariat Genre - Romance, Literary Fiction 5/5 “I am oriented only by your presence, or your absence. You are my north.” “This year I turned 30, so i chose to travel… on my own… because I wanted to learn how it is alright to journey alone…” This was the perfect book for the month of love. What could be better than nine people professing their love for the same woman, and recounting the first time they set their eyes on her? Truly brilliant! We get to see vignettes of a woman’s life through the eyes of her paramours. We never get to meet the woman in person, or find out her thoughts, she is not given a voice. But we are allowed to watch her shadow, as she threads in and out of nine people’s lives, leaving a deep impression on them, so as to influence them to tell her story as they perceive her. She is an enigma which makes her presence surreal, flitting from one place to another, catching someone’s fancy and then disappearing. For them she is perfect, flawless, untouched, and they know she can never be theirs forever. I am mesmerised by the words, each chapter is narrated by one of the paramours, and they are creatively named “The Saint”, “The Butcher”, “The Caretaker’, and the narration reads like a love letter written to a woman referred to as “You”. The absence of names for people and places adds to the dream-like effect of the book, allowing us to concentrate on the deep beauty of the words. I have placed an order for Pariat’s book, Everything the Light Touches, and I can’t wait to get lost in her words again. #QOTD Which book are you reading to celebrate the month of love?

My search for relatively unknown books by resident #indianauthors have led me to yet another gem. #theninechamberedheart by @janicepariat . The protagonist may not be a character you have never heard of, or seen in a movie or met or befriended in real life, but the construction of the book is unique and the writing is lyrical without being overly emotional. It's a quick read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I think it will also make most readers nostalgic about their similar relationships. I wish the different narratives had different styles of writing (on the other hand that may have been an editorial decision to keep the momentum and to not take focus away from the plot) and that the central character had been fleshed out a little more. Overall though, a good read. Pick or skip? Pick Blurb from the book cover: Nine characters recall their relationship with a young woman - the same woman - whom they have loved, or who has loved them. We piece her together, much as we do with others in our lives, in incomplete but illuminating slivers. Set in familiar and nameless cities, moving between east and west, The Nine-Chambered Heart is a compendium of shifting perspectives that follows one woman's life, making her dazzlingly real in one moment, and obscuring her in the very next. Janice Pariat's exquisitely written new novel is about the fragile, fragmented nature of identity - how others see us only in bits and pieces, and how sometimes we tend to become what others perceive us to be. #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #febreads #valentinereads #indianreaders #shortreads #fiction

Let's shed some light on our incredibly talented Indian authors this month. Kicking off the list with @janicepariat . Janice Pariat is an Indian poet and writer. Born in Assam and brought up in Shillong in Meghalaya, she is a teacher at Ashoka University and bides her time between New Delhi and Shillong. She received the Young Writer Award from the Sahitya Akademi and the Crossword Book Award for Fiction in 2013.cPariat's work has been compared to magical realism because of the way it weaves together local folklore and history with the developing social and political events. Her most recent book, Everything the Light Touches is about four people separated by time and space but linked through their stories of travel and botany. It portrays the social and political issues in the state along with accurate botanical facts. The Nine-Chambered Heart revolves around a woman through the perspective of nine different people and how they perceive her. Her writing is very beautiful and enticing and the chapter titles corresponds wonderfully with the stories. Her other works include Boats on Land: A collection of short stories and Seahorse: A novel. EVERYTHING THE LIGHT TOUCHES Let us wait, let us listen.  When we gather, we gather as though for the last time.  Who knows when the hearth will glow with welcoming fire, and when it might  expire? We gather as we always have. We gather safe, we gather warm.  What will it be tonight? Tonight, it will be our story  The one with a tree, the one with a tiger, and the small bird who knows.  The rest is smoke-but where's the fire? Here, here, gather close.  Here is the song, and here is the story, we cannot pry each from each.  Take both, we offer them lightly.  Tonight, what will it be? This story that holds all stories, this song that carries all songs.  How abundant are we, shifting, unfurling, gathering every future that could be? How do we grow but slowly? Where do we turn to if not towards the light? Here the darkness, here the sight---bound together, like song and story.  How to live but lightly? How to learn but gently? All the while journeying through life after life after life.  Gather, gather, around the fire, listen, listen.  Breathe.  ~Janice Pariat, Everything The Light Touches Andrea in our ‘Blood Trail’ shirt and Wokha high-waisted trousers made in cashmere wool. 📚The nine chambered heart by @janicepariat Janice Pariat is a 'straight from the heart to the heart' kind of a book. It warms the cockles of the hearts while reading. 📚 There are nine stories in the book of the same girl, where other people who have had relationships with her recall her with fondness, love, mystery and a longing. 📚 The first story of her as a school going girl is what sets the tone for the book. It's end left me wanting for more. At the end of the third story, there is a sentence "All the dead in the world are reborn into creatures of flight." which resonated...don't we all look around for such signs❣️ 📚 The unnamed characters and locations add a surreal touch to the book - it's magical. The process of the reader piecing together fragments from her life makes the reading experience exhilarating and leaves us thinking - how much of what others perceive us are we actually? Read it for the treatment and exploring the nine chambers of a girl's heart❣️ #bookstafriends #bookishpost #booklove #booklover #booknerd #instabooks #bookstagram #goodbook #bookreview #bookrecommendation #goodread #bookphotography #readreadread #readmorebooks #readersofinstagram #bookreader #bookcommunity #booklovers #bookreviews #womenwriters #heartwarmingreads #theninechamberedheart #janicepariat

#bookreview #justfinishedreading "The Nine-Chambered Heart" by Janice Pariat. I liked the concept of the book. Nine people talk about the same girl, the protagonist, or rather the muse of the book, whom they had loved at different times of her life. The characters and places in the plot are unnamed, except the cats 😸 I liked the way the book is written, the poetic prose, perception of feelings and scenes. But it is rather melancholic. It was an easy book to read, and I finished it quickly. . The girl seemed like a very unhappy person, scarred by absent parents while growing up, moving from love to love easily, but somewhat always distant and disengaged, only momentarily happy, with no genuine friendship and always prone to loss. She seems to be the happiest with cats though. I wished she were described by some other people too, like a parent/grandparent, a friend/classmate, or even a cat, to know some other aspect of her too, not just of men (mostly) who desire her.💔 VERDICT: Beautifully written, different concept, but melancholic. Liked reading it but didn't love it. #qotd What are your thoughts about this popular book? P.S. After 5 years, I met @janicepariat again. Reminded me how book launches, talking to authors & reading books changed my life. 📚 In 2017 when Janice’s book #TheNineChamberedHeart was released, I covered that event as a blogger. At that point, I was pursuing my masters in Statistics but my love for languages never let me leave the novels, poetry collections and other interesting books from across genres. Little did I know at that point that this @emptyhouseofliterature page would change my life for ever. 📚 Last Saturday, like always, I went to IIC Delhi to attend a book launch but this time I was a working professional who market books to earn his bread & butter. 📚 Grateful to life & people for every opportunity they brought me. #BookLaunch #delhibookstafam #JanicePariat

“I am struck, at this moment, by how precisely we know to hurt the ones we love.” THE NINE-CHAMBERED HEART by Janice Pariat. This book is heartwarming, realistic and feels incomplete at the right places. A narrative of 9 different men who have loved the same women through different time frames and ages. Curiosity—most of our picks is a result of the same. Sometimes, we are taken by the mesmerising cover. Other times, the appearance of a particular read on other bookstagrammers' feeds compels us to gravitate towards it. And for the rest, to each, our taste pushes us towards unique genres, authors, etc. As for this read, it's been the title—the Nine Chambered Heart. It made me wonder what the story entailed? Why is the heart nine-chambered? . . Now that we have crossed paths, I am enthralled. The heart is truly nine-chambered. Because it's a narrative led by nine unnamed men who stumbled upon an unnamed woman in different phases of their life, in an unnamed part of the world with a city described as with a river or without. . . The characterisation of this woman from each man's perspective puts her in place of untiring adoration. Each man fell for her the moment they clicked. They enjoyed a good part of their days, months, or years as memorable as possible. Though, most times, there came circumstances when these men left their relationship unnamed with her and lived it as it came, one day at a time. Without fussing about the future or even tomorrow. . . There's one fact that this woman brought to light in the course of the story that I loved. On being asked, 'How many times have you been in love?' She replied, 'How does one know? It could be love every time. People think it's hard, that it's the most difficult thing in the world...but it's easy to love'. . . Don't you think it's a truth as clear as day? And something that we overlook all the same? . . #thebigbangbibliophile #theninechamberedheart #janicepariat #bookblogger #booktography #aesthetic #mumbaibookblogger #mumbaibookstagram #booksofinstagram #booknerd #indianreader #bookstagramindiafeature #goodreads #bookstagrammerindia #bookstagrammersunite #booknerd #bookclub #bookstoread #booklover #bookworm #bookcommunity #bookobsessed #bookish #bookaholic #readersofinstagram #readersofig #igbook #readersareleaders #readerforlife #literature

The Nine Chambered Heart - Janice Pariat(@janicepariat) My review - 🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 Summary🦩- A person's full personality is a collective put together of other people's perspective on you. In this book, nine characters are describing their experiences and interactions with this one woman, whom they have all loved and admired at some point. The woman is unnamed throughout the book and you can only judge her personality through the eyes of these people who are describing her. She is selfish for some, sweet for the other, silent and deep for someone else while adventurous for the rest. What I felt🔖- The book is written in a very poetic language where everything is described in mesmerizing frames. It is heartwarming at places and boring at none. Don't expect any deep or thought provoking writing; it's a light hearted read for an easy time. #janicepariat #janicepariatbooks #theninechamberedheart #theninechamberedheartbyjanicepariat #bookstagramindia #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendations #readingtime #readingcommunity #fictionbooks #romanticbooks #thehardbackgirlreviews

Janice Pariat’s THE NINE-CHAMBERED HEART is a narrative told from the perspective of nine different characters who all loved the same woman in different (or sometimes at the same) times of her life. I adored the concept and finished the book in two sittings. 💕 This lyrical, quiet book doesn’t tell you much about the woman at the centre of it, except help you piece her together through the fragmented views of the men (and one woman) in her life. Aside from one narrative, almost all the other perspectives are of romantic love. Which brings me to wonder about the other forms of love we don’t get to see hyped or explored in a similar vein.✨ While I liked the book, I would have liked to see different kinds of love explored here. #qotd : Aside from romantic love, what other form of love would you like to see explored more in fiction?🍃 #aotd : I’m a sucker for sibling love, 💞because it’s such a hotbed of emotions. I’ll read anything with siblings at the centre of it. THE HUNGER GAMES sucked me in from the first chapter because I felt Katniss’ anxiety about losing her sister to the reaping. Jandy Nelson’s I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN is one of my all-time favorite books. Give me a sibling love story any time and I will celebrate it. I also like mother-daughter love stories❤️‍🩹 because again, another rollercoaster relationship where emotions are at an all time high. Like say what you may about it, but I love the MAMMA MIA movies. They make me sooo happy! P.S. Also, also, August is drawing to a close, which means the poet of our hearts is awake again. What better time than now to prepare for Midnights. 🥹 iykyk. #chaiandchapters #theninechamberedheart #lovestories #bookstagram 🌸🌸🌸 #bookaesthetic #bookish #booknerdigans #bookstagramfeature #bookstagramindia #bookstagrammer #bookworm #bibliophile #readersofig #readingcommunity #booksbooksbooks

▪️Prvnim je jeji ucitel, coz me velmi zaujalo. Hey fellow readers 🌻 I hope everyone is feeling awesome today. Firstly, I am sorry for being away for so long but I promise that this time I am here to stay. Now, here comes a new review for you guys ✨✨ I read Meet Cute last month and I admired every bit of it. The book follows the story of Kailyn, a smart and sassy lawyer and her college crush, Daxton who was the hero of Kailyn's favourite soap opera. Hence she fangirls hard during their meet cute at law school but later due to some misunderstanding their friendship goes south and they end up graduating as enemies. However due to a tragic turn of events Daxton needs Kailyn's assistance in his sister Emme's custody case. In the first half we observe enemies to lovers trope with typical dysfunctional family problems. There are many ebbs and flows along with some crazy drama which kept me hooked. Also, this book is mutli narrative hence it's easy-peasy to get really invested in Dax and Kailyn's lives. I was rooting for this atypical couple, between laughter and tears. Their chemistry is ineffable. Dax's sister acts as catalyst in bringing them together. Slowly towards the end the three of them form a cute little family of their own. I was happy to see that all characters have a growth arc in the tale. The book is a dynamic combination of romantic comedy with a series of heavy emotions. I believe this quirky romance is definitely worth the detour! 💖 . . . #meetcute #readersofig #lavieenrose #geeks #tatb #nerds #bookstagram #theninechamberedheart #boatland #aesthetic # #junereads #hotgirlsummer #reads of2022 #instareads #bookworm #dreamer #bibbliophiles #helenahunting #romcoms #pride

“You an undiscovered continent. A land that hasn’t been charted. And in a way, for me, the world.” 💐 I wonder what it’s like to view yourself from someone else’s perspective. Especially your past lovers. Would they see the cracks in the facade you put up? Or would they dream up a version of you that’s too good to be true? Would they accept you for who you are? Or would they harbour intense dislike for what they see? 💐 The story is told from the POV of nine different people who recount their memories of a woman they loved. My feelings for this book are an amalgamation of confusion, dread and longing. Maybe it’s because I have never related more to the ‘protagonist’ of a novel than this one. What I love about this book is it doesn’t limit your imagination to places, names or anything remotely rooted in reality. Because, of what use are these details when we are piecing together someone we love? 🎉 This novel has to be the most unique piece of literature I’ve read in a long while. #theninechamberedheart #janicepariat #indiannovel #india #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #indianbookstagram #book #novel #bookreview #singapore

#theninechamberedheart #janicepariat #editoramoinhos #novepartesdeumcoração #leiamulheresbh #literaturaindiana #queroafome #instabookgram #livros #cafemagri #mercadonovobh

I have long adored Pariat’s short story Fish-eye and her writing on Instagram often brightens my day, so it was with much anticipation that I picked up her second book, The Nine Chambered Heart. The premise seemed very tempting and opened up a world full of possibilities about the characters. The unnamed protagonist (very interestingly, the only named characters in the book are the protagonist’s cats, which I love), starting from her school years is the center and point of narration by the characters sharing their stories. These are 8 people, who have at one point or another, been in love with the protagonist in different ways, cities and times. Interestingly, the writer has divided the cities (the characters reside in cities across the world) into cities by the river, and cities without a river. She has stuck to the naming of almost nothing, which makes the novel so humane in a raw way. Especially for someone like me, in my weak attempts to write, I find it almost obsessive to have the logistics clear, which city, which year, what locality. Yes, I am trying to establish context in this way, but I love how after reading Pariat I am able to look at story making in a different way. I think that’s why writers come to reading so hungrily. I must say at the outset, that my favorite thing about the book is Pariat’s writing. It is heart wrenching, full of longing and exquisite. Easily one of those writers whose writing make you wish they were describing you, or your story, only so you could read about yourself in such exquisite, endearing and painful detail. The protagonist comes across as an aloof child, who we slowly come to know has parents who are hardly present and hence she has grown up with her grandparents. Its often in the childhood that our string of losses begin, is it not? Through the multiple accounts, one could see how these abandonment issues are playing out in the character’s lives. What makes it richer, is how the characters who are narrating, also have had their individual lives, losses and issues they are dealing with.  (Cont in comments)

The Nine -Chambered Heart by @janicepariat Genre:- Coming of age Rating:- ⭐⭐⭐⭐.2 "What happens when you leave people? It allows you both to grow." I really liked the idea of this book. The way different men and a woman talk about a young woman. About how they fall in love with the same person at different points of her life. Different perspective about the same person. And also how their 'names' reflect them. Maybe the names are the woman's pov of them. And among all these differences there's just one thing in common- the woman and their love for her. There might be different perspective of her but there's also similarities. These similarities gives us the hint of what kind of a person the woman is. About her life and her overall personality. The most important thing that I liked is that the chapters were not long, it keeps the reader excited enough to keep reading. And yes the book was about one woman from different POVs and even though the whole focus is on her, we also find some subtle similarities between the men. All of them curious to know more about the same person which inspires curiosity in the reader too. And I loved the way the themes unfurls themselves. This is the kind of book that you either love or not at all, there's no in between. And I think that's why it's an underrated book. There's this poetic quality that enchants you. And the name of the book is great. Like the way it matches with the story. And the end seems to conclude the woman's overall life. A really beautiful book to have a quick read. Though I suppose it could've been executed in a much better way. #theninechamberedheart #theninechamberedheartbyjanicepariat #janicepariat #janicepariatbooks #janicepariatquotes #bookrecommendations #bookreviews #fictionalbooks #fictionalcharacters #goodreadschallenge #goodreadschallenge2022 #comingofage #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #booklover #bibliophile #bookish #fictionbooks

Nine stories. Nine cities. Nine different characters. All of them recall their relationship with one single mysterious woman. In some stories, they loved that woman. And in others, she loved them. By piecing together these short, puzzling, heartfelt stories we slowly get an understanding of who that mysterious, elusive woman might be. This understanding may vary from reader to reader, depending upon what they infer from each individual story and how they choose to piece it together. So in a way, this book can mean different things to different people. It is a beautiful depiction of how a whole is made up of many broken parts... and how each person can be understood in different ways by different people, depending upon how they choose to arrange those broken parts. Geek Girl is the only book series that I adore. The writing is so simple that I (the slowest reader on this planet) finished the book in 2-3 sittings only. The other reason for this could be my resonance with the subject matter. Harriet Manners is given the label of “Geek”. Apart from getting straight A’s, she likes to state fun facts when she is nervous. Her best friend Nat is quite the opposite as she wants to be a model. But their relationship goes through a rough patch when the modelling agency chooses Harriet over Nat for a huge modelling gig. The story follows Harriet’s bizzare modelling experiences and her first encounter with love. Despite the book being a light read, the personality of characters is very profound. The writing is clever and funny. The plot is also interesting. Moreover, it’s a really happy book. Perfect for you to read after a long, tiring day as you don’t have to think about anything and just giggle your way through the pages! 🌸 . . #geekgirl #readersofig #modelmisfit #geeks #fromgeektochic #nerds #hollysmale #harrietmanners #bookstagram #theninechamberedheart #janicepariat #boatland #aesthetic #theliterarycircle #januaryreads #reads of2022 #2022reads #instareads #bookworm #bibbliophiles

Favourite multiple POV book? Books that sketches characters through other's eyes are not perceived equally. I think it's because of the inadequacy of them. The unpredictability of them. The emptiness we're left with, the myriad of questions that linger in our minds - do not work for some, but it make sense to me, very surprisingly so. We follow a woman through her nine lover's narratives in the Nine Chambered Heart. We get accustomed to her in bits and pieces through fragmented visions of men, women who loved her, and she loved. They all possessed their own versions of her, with may be a fine thread of similarity. We feel we know her for years in one moment, and in the next she slips away. The lovers have a strange universality in the way they loved her among the differences. They try to derive more than just a reciprocation from her. they are swooned, they seem more alive than ever in your presence, yet they can't bring themselves to think of her as someone to hold on to forever, no matter how much she clings on to them. Like she is meant to be a person to be apart from. Her mysterious aura is only a fleeting moment of bliss. She carries the mystery with her, that we the fools try to solve it all along. I somehow hate it when they try to mould you as per their liking, when they misunderstand you...but then how do I know, it's 'mis'-understanding at all? I'm in awe Janice Pariat's writing right now. She's a revelation! They way she documented a living, breathing soul, her flaws, her spontaneity, her pains, and facets of character that growth forgets to shed off, throughout her life- so lyrically, so emotively. This book felt like a mediation in between a hectic rush. It demands to be devoured and relished, slowly. Sharing Bhairabi’s @_heir.of.slytherine_ post today! #BookReview of #TheNineChamberedHeart “Who knows, who knows, the singer croons, just what the future may hold. Will it be with you?” 📃' You, though, are as beautiful as light splitting through glass.' Nine characters recall their relationship with a young woman - the same woman - whom they have loved, or who has loved them. We piece her together, much as we do with others in our lives, in incomplete but illuminating slivers. Set in familiar, nameless cities, moving between east and west, The Nine-Chambered Heart is a compendium of shifting perspectives that follow one woman's life, making her dazzlingly real in one moment, and obscuring her in the very next. Janice Pariat's exquisitely written new novel is about the fragile, fragmented nature of identity - how others see us only in bits and pieces, and how sometimes we tend to become what others perceive us to be. I liked this book very much. It's very interesting to read....we do not know the narrators’s names, and neither the enigmatic woman’s nor the cities. But their stories fill your whole heart. Sometimes I got confused like who is talking to whom. All the stories were slow yet engaging. You see their different perspective about love, hope, relations. They want different things, hold different views. Sometimes love is just not enough to stay together for the whole life. It's a pretty interesting story and I enjoyed all the variations of them. It's the December BOTM for @readwithnika_bookclub #ExploreIndiaReadathon #readsevensisterstatesreadathon & I'm just 3days late...ooopsss sorry🤭busy enjoying the 1st day of the 2022.. hope your days will also gone well and I wish you all a Very Happy & Bright New Year 2022 ✨✨ If you are interested in participating in this reading challenge, simply comment below! #TheNineChamberedHeart #Seahorse #BoatsOnLand #Meghalaya #Shillong #MeghalayaLiterature #Meghalayabooks #NorthEastLiterature #readwithnikabookclub #bookclub #onlinebookclub #virtualbookclub  #bookclubs #bookclubofinstagram #awardwinners #bookclubbook #bookclubsofinstagram #instagrambookclub #indiabookclub #freebookclub #qotd #literaryfiction  #fiction

to begin anew A new year will probably never wear off its share of possibilities on us (it would be a sad place if it did). So, I begin 2022 between words and ink and people made of them, and the mellow joy that comes with them I surely missed. This is to the magic of new beginnings I would draw on to love better the things that validate my existence. Hope you all on IG too will grow to love something vital to you that you did not know before.

Some more quotes from Janice Pariat’s THE NINE CHAMBERED HEART Here’s a synopsis: 'You, though, are as beautiful as light splitting through glass.' Nine characters recall their relationship with a young woman - the same woman - whom they have loved, or who has loved them. #ExploreIndiaReadathon #TheNineChamberedHeart #Meghalaya #Shillong #MeghalayaLiterature #Meghalayabooks #NorthEastLiterature #readwithnikabookclub #bookclub #onlinebookclub #virtualbookclub  #bookclubs #bookclubofinstagram #awardwinners #bookclubbook #bookclubsofinstagram #instagrambookclub #indiabookclub #freebookclub #qotd #literaryfiction  #fiction #nonfiction #collection #essay #womenwriters #literaturebywomen

Sharing Nika’s @pretty_little_bibliophile post today! #BookReview of #TheNineChamberedHeart 🌷 The Nine Chambered Heart By Janice Pariat In the month of December, I decided to read a book by an author hailing from Meghalaya - Janice Pariat. This was the first book of hers that I picked up, but it will certainly not be the last! This was also for the #ExploreIndiaReadathon Like an ode from an artist who does not really understand his muse, and yet is moved by it — that was how this book started. I am finding it immensely difficult to categorize it completely — a fiction novel, or a series of vignettes? Love letters or diary entries from the heart? The uniting entity is this nameless woman at the center of it all — who plays with our (just as the other narrators’) imagination of her — as if playfully peeping and then hiding, behind a curtain. Just like the rest, we get to know her in snatches. From one story to the next — it is a constant (but slow) unraveling of her being. Every story reveals something, the previous one had put forward as a mystery. But it is still not enough. We are left waiting, like a castaway hoping for a drop of potable water — and we do get them. But drops are not enough to satiate the awful curious hunger that Pariat has created in our minds. Like “pieces [of meat that] string together because the cut isn’t clean”, we cling to the idea of this nameless woman. While reading, I sometimes blame the lovers, mostly men, for trying to romanticize her, for trying to make her fit into one box. But our heroine is no saint either. And I think, therein lies the dilemma — the utter humanness of her that defies any dichotomy. This is perhaps where the narrators fail and we feel the sting of their confusion as well. This book also made me ponder and philosophize about life, and about being the 'Hedonist Pleasure Seeker'. Because of the limited caption size, I will be unable to delve more into that aspect but if you are interested, I urge you to check out the link in my bio for the full version of this review! "Because life is like that, isn't it? One cannot stop its ebb and flow. You step into the current and whatever's in your path will cross you and touch you and sometimes stay." - @janicepariat #TheNineChamberedHeart #ZoyaMakesArt
