Looking for some more polyamory/ethical nonmonogamy representation in your fiction? We've got two recommendations by BIPOC authors you won't want to miss! 🤎 On a Woman's Madness by Astrid Roemer (translated by Lucy Scott) 🤎 The Body Myth by Rheea Mukherjee About On a Woman's Madness On a Woman’s Madness tells the story of Noenka, a courageous Black woman trying to live a life of her own choosing. When her abusive husband of just nine days refuses her request for divorce, Noenka flees her hometown in Suriname, on South America's tropical northeastern coast, for the capital city of Paramaribo. Unsettled and unsupported, her life in this new place is illuminated by romance and new freedoms, but also forever haunted by her past and society’s expectations. About The Body Myth Mira is a teacher living in the heart of Suryam, a modern bustling in city India. Mira lives alone, and with only the French existentialists as companions, until the day she witnesses a beautiful woman having a seizure in the park. Mira is quickly drawn into the lives of this mysterious woman Sara, who suffers a myriad of unexplained illnesses, and her kind, intensely supportive husband Rahil, striking up intimate, volatile and fragile friendships with each of them that quickly become something more. Image description: Two hands hold up copies of On a Woman's Madness and The Body Myth in front of bright colorful bookshelves. The cover of On a Woman's Madness is black with red lettering. You can see the profile of a Black woman's face and her hand grasping the greenery partially obscuring her face. The cover of The Body Myth is orange with a line drawing of a kneeling body bent over backwards and split in half. Greenery sprouts from the middle of the body.

My first book published was a collection of short stories called Transit For Begginners. It included short stories I had written between the ages of 22-32. Lots of rejection but a small press @kitaab.sg took a chance on me and published it in 2015. It’s out of print now but @attagalatta still has a few copies left if you want to buy. A couple years later I wrote #thebodymyth and got hundreds of rejections until a cold query to @stacytesta resulted in her representing my book. We found our home this novel with @unnamedpress in LA and soon after with @penguinindia . It changed the game for me as a writer, after years of rejection I had a legit novel out and one that was resonating with many people. Then, the pandemic happened and through those hard years I wrote The girl who kept falling in love published by @penguinindia. It’s still looking for the right home in the US and UK. I wrote my first story at 22 and today I am 40. I was stubborn that I’d do this, stubborn through rejection, unreliable in my moods but consistent in my bursts of writing . A day job, animals, heartbreaks, resistence and love all helped me make me the writer I am and want to be.

SOLD The Body Myth. Rheea Mukherjee. Hard Cover. Near New condition. Swipe for video. Limited Edition Sample Copy. Price- Rs 199 plus shipping. A brilliant bold and original debut of a brave new voice. The Body Myth is such a smart and complex exploration of what it means to be in a body in the world, what it means to be in a body that is ill, and what it means to be in a body in love. And like all of those states of being, the book is filled with ambiguity and contradictions. Los Angeles Review of Books The Body Myth is full of questions, about our bodies and minds, about mental illness, about the history of trauma, and about the depths of friendship and love. LA Times Mukherjee's novel encapsulates the heady breathlessness of falling in love. Publishers Weekly Mira is a teacher living in the heart of Suryam, the only place in the world the fickle Rasagura fruit grows. Witty , melancholic and dramatic . 🎠 Mira is a teacher living in the heart of Suryam, the only place in the world the fickle Rasagura fruit grows. 🎀 Mira lives alone, and with only the French existentialists as companions, until the day she witnesses a beautiful woman having a seizure in the park. The social & cultural aspects of the female body (& mind) is what I start my Menopause Workshop with. During the almost 6 hours of learning - I draw a big circle and we finish discussing the cultural aspects again, by that point everyone is nodding their heads in understanding and chipping in some bits of information. Im currently reading The Body Myth by Rheea Mukherjee and cuddling in bed con mi nueva emotional support squishmallow Caballita 🐴💘🏡😇 ○ ○ ○ "Heartbreak only comes from expectation. (...) Heartbreak comes in waves." Quiero mucho a Mira. 9.3/10 ○ ○ ○ #bookofthemonth #bookwormsofinstagram #thebodymyth #RheeaMukherjee #squishmallow

"I carry a black hole behind my heart, a small dime-sized abyss. It first arrived when I saw an audience laugh at a man who limped on stage. It is full of rage and mine forever. We have eaten so many doctors together. They say you're too young to be sick and there they go, sucked into the void." The Body Myth is an honest, somtimes biting, often pensive collection of poetry which looks at the reality of living with chronical illnesses and chronical pain. Hannah Land weaves together classical mythology with folkstories, a lot of water imagery (which I love because that's what I am also drawn to), pop culture, and the day-to-day of diagnoses, treatments and dealing with chronic illness. The collection has thirty-one pages only but such a range of themes. Land looks at disability and bodies through different lenses from a more straight-forward poem on deciding to buy a wheel chair to more metaphor-heavy works like "The Selkie". I read the collection during a week full of doctor's appointments and health issues and felt like The Body Myth was a pretty good companion. "Peel away the body and every disability story is a love story" I am not often contacted by publishers or authors - and when I am I mostly decline. But when Hannah Land contacted me describing her poetry collection I did not hesitate. I am glad my radar was not off. The book will be officially released on April 15th. [Image description: My hand holds a copy of Hannah Land's "The Body Myth". 📚 GIVEAWAY 📚 Thank you so much to @inhannahland for sending this book to me. Poetry is something that I’ve often shied away from; partly due to memories of school but mostly because I often see myself as “not clever enough” to understand it properly. However, recently I have been getting into various types of poetry more and realising that I was wrong. This book in particular, which uses myth to explore disability and chronic illness resonates with me, and the more times I read it, the more I feel connected to it. It is emotional and angry at times, and it portrays living with chronic pain in such a raw way. The best part though is that I have 2 copies of this book to giveaway! The rules are simple: 1. Comment below (with anything; a joke, something to make others smile, tag a friend, whatever you like… be nice though!) 2. Follow me 3. Follow @inhannahland Open internationally, to everyone. Whether you have EDS/chronic illness or not. I will cover shipping costs, but I am not responsible for any loss or damage once the books have left my home. Winners need to be happy to message me with their postal address. I will draw 2 names and will share the winners on my stories on Friday 8th April. This giveaway is not affiliated with Instagram in any way. #ehlersdanlossyndrome #zebrastrong #chronicillness #chronicillnesswarrior #thebodymyth #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #bookdragon #bookzebra #poetry #poetrylovers #poetrybooks #chronicillnesspoetry

My psychiatrist tells me most people work through their issues with their bodies as a final stage of their healing journey. I’m so grateful to @ronitplank for making space for this important topic of #TheBodyMyth— In this podcast conversation, I talked with Ronit about how many people who have encountered with chronic mental health conditions (like the bipolar disorder I live with) who refuse medication due to side effects of weight gain and hair loss when so many people die of mental health conditions due to suicide or self-medication induced substance use disorders. Chemotherapy and radiation also causes weight changes and hair loss but those are typically not reasons for refusing the treatments, but somehow it is more acceptable to reject treatment for severe chronic mental health conditions that are also often life threatening. Society’s fixation on how women are supposed to look, whether from the Eastern or Western gaze, causes so much harm. I had to hit a low point in my life to realize that no one else’s opinion matters but my own. Thanks for listening to the podcast to hear the story, about my body journey and why I prioritize my mental health above my appearance — #linkinbio #bodypositive #bodyimage #asianamericanfeminism #asianbodypositivity #immigrantstories #podcast #mentalhealthrecovery #stigmafree #nomorestigma #bipolar #bipolar1

Do you remember how old you were when you started thinking about your body? My first home was in Israel where my parents tell me I was a head above the other children in my group. Growing up they told me stories about myself: I was always tall, always with the biggest appetite, always loud, always trying to pet one of the animals nearby, always helping the kids who were littler than me get dressed or reach for things they needed. When you’re young you can absorb the stories people share about you and take them on as your own. And for a long time I liked these stories very much. But as I got older and certainly when we were back in the US And I was 5 I didn’t want be called big, I didn’t want people to hear my accent or know that I had a really healthy appetite; that most girls’ clothing the didn’t fit me the way they fit other girls my age. My body became something to be aware of, to worry about, and very rarely to be proud of. I don’t blame any one thing for this change. Could just be a special combination of Western culture, media, adolescence, my own self-consciousness… It’s taken me years to sift through these beliefs about myself—to embrace my body but also separate myself from what it means. My new podcast about body image in American women is launching next month and there’s a link to the survey I’m doing for it in my bio. How are you doing on your body journey— do you remember how old you were when you wondered if yours was OK? I suspect I still think about my stomach, my size, my body so many years later in part because of my early experience with it. I wore hand-me-downs for a decent portion of my childhood and my stomach didn’t fit into the waistbands well. Putting clothes on was sort of a hold-your-breath-and-cross-your-fingers-they-fit experience that I wrote about in my memoir When She Comes Back. It never occurred to me that maybe the clothes were the wrong size. Never. My stomach and build and body were the problem and that has stayed with me despite what I’ve learned about #dietculture and the #bodypositive movement. But I’m working on it— trying to understand better and hear from other women who have been through this too. My new project/podcast is about this very subject and if you’d like to contribute 1-you can check out the survey in my bio. 2-you can message me with a body image memory that I can share on an episode (with or without your name)❤️ There’s also a link to chapter 1 of my When She Comes Back audiobook about parents who leave, a guru, and growing up feeling less-than. I think it’s so helpful to share stories and I look forward to learning about yours. Quote card: “I got the sweater on and puffed it over my waistline so that people at school wouldn’t see my fat squishing over the top of my skirt. As long as the safety pin didn’t pop open, I would be all right. Nobody would know I was too big for my clothes.”—excerpted from When She Comes Back #WhenSheComesBackMemoir #WomenWhoWrite #Memoirist #igotout #BodyDysmorphia #EatingDisorderAwareness #MomsSupportMoms #GenerationalTrauma #HealingTheMotherWound #MotheringJourney #StoriesCanHeal #TheBodyMyth #NewPodcast

🐼 cannot express the warmth she felt on reading this book by the beautiful Rheea Mukherjee! It was quite unexpected for me (ishita here, im the 🐼) to feel parts of the experience mentioned by one or the characters to be slightly touching in a way that it felt like my inner child could relate to some bits and peices of the story. I'm often very possessive about the books that I read and keep in my library. But lately I've had dome feelings for sharing some of the books from my library to expand on the act of kindness, community, love and the relationship of sharing amongst book lovers! Anyone who would like to have this book, just dm! It's a beautiful read and I hope this book enriches your life! . . . #thebodymyth #bookstagram #booklover #bookstagramfeature #booknerd #mentalhealthindia #mentalhealthmatters #igreads #booklove #vscobooks #bookphotography

*Book Review* THE BODY MYTH ~ Rheea Mukherjee 32 year old Mira is a school teacher who has spent the last year coping with the sudden death of a husband, only 7 months into the marriage. Mira lives alone only with the French existentialists as companions, until the day her solitary existence is upended by a beautiful woman having a seizure in a local Park. Mira is quickly drawn into a life of this mysterious woman, Sara, who suffers a myriad of unexplained illness, and her kind, intensely supportive husband Rahil. As she strikes up intimate, volatile and fragile friendships with them, Mira is intoxicated by the attention and eager to unravel the mystery of sarah's illness. The deeper Mira is drawn into the relationship, the harder it becomes to see the truth and the more she grows to love them, the more she has to lose. The Body Myth is a powerfully intimate novel about the fetishization of illness. The book talked about some underrepresented topics like mental health, its relation to physical health, self awareness and unconventional relationships. It also represents a keen interest in the female body and the question of its ownership. There were only three major characters in the books and all three were portrayed really beautifully involving well defined back stories and some smooth character development arcs. There was definitely something to learn from each character. However the book was very slow. It started out quiet interesting but the level of charm was not consistent through out the plot. On the other hand, it has some good thought behind it and has discussed a few interesting concepts. A major part of the books personality was in being open to interpretation. I rate it: ⭐⭐⭐/5 #thebodymyth #rheeamujherjee #contemporary #mentalhealth #intimate #femalebody #relationships #polyamory #booklover #bookstagramer #book #booklove #bookstagramers #bookstagram #bookdragon #bookworm #bibliophile #readingtime #bookholic #readersofinsta #bookscommunity #reader #readers #readabook #booksaremagic #reading #bookslife #bookchallange #booktok

The Body Myth by Rheea Mukherjee is a book that tells us that the exotic and the mundane exists in the same person much like the fictional fruit of Rasgura which is exotic to the outsider but when you enter the town of Suryam it's an ordinary home grown delicacy. Much like the non-monogamous polycule that emerges between Sara, Rahil and Mira. It might seem exotic or even voyeuristic for the reader to standing at the edge of the book and looking into their relationship. But to the three of them it is an ordinary everyday occurence of their reality, a intimate dance and language that is best spoken by individuals who inhabit the space. But it isn't just the reader who is voyeuristic, Mira feels a morbid curiosity towards Sara when she witnesses her having seizures in a park. This curiosity makes her an onlooker in Sara and Rahul's life and soon a part of it. But while being a part of it she also walks a thin love of being a lover and being an onlooker who is slicing apart Sara's illnesses. Time and again the questions of who defines illness, who is an ill person and at what point does the mind become so powerful that the body bows down to the mind? In Mira we see an individual who is grieving and finds solace, love and companionship with Sara and Rahil. She is surrounded by the existentialist writing. Perhaps all the existentialist writing could not sum up the absurdity of living as much as her reality did when she gets drawn into Sara and Rahil's world. For all her knowledge of Sara and her illness the reader sees a constant grappling for labels and at what point sickness and madness ensues. In Sara we see the constant battle of wanting to escape the body while being trapped by it and the illness it is capable of conjuring. If the body is just that, a myth, and soul is all that matters then what do we make of the absurdity of exisiting and getting by in our lives? The Body Myth by Rhea Mukherjee Review by @grprsd The name Rhea and its bengali resemblance has kind of instilled a sinister image in my mind given the recent events that have unfolded. But I take comfort from the fact that author of this intirguing book completely changed that image for me replacing it with that of a very intelligent, steady and philosophical mind. In her book, which is in first person, she narrates her story of love and belonging in a philosophical and mystical tone that keeps the reader hooked. One might mistake the writing to be self-indulgent and narcissistic as the author delves into her deepest feelings and emotions dealing with them in real-time during the story. Yet you will find out that it is not like that in any way because there is a realism in it that is highly reflective of every person who converses with themselves about life in general and the reasons for existence. Through love for other people, Rhea decodes complex relationships of Mira with two people which, at least for me. was a first time experience. The whirlwind of emotions that transpire between the three people in love has been expressed beautifully in a steady philosophical voice. The ending, as one would expect, keeps up with the tone of the whole book taing the reader to the calmness they experience in mystical snow clad mountains. The urban well educated sophisticated Indian reader will identify with this book as it has all the ingredients that make them intellectual. There is chamomile tea, a rare exotic fruit and exquisite simple meals that tickle the intellect of intelligent people. All of these gastronomical details keep up with the mystical tone of the book completing it in the mundane ways too. It was a great experience reading this book and definitely one of the most intriguing. Thank you Rohini Venkatesh Malur for picking this one up. I know a bit about you now through this book because I remember that you are fond of it when you suggested it for the book of the month. The Body Myth leaves too many questions unanswered- What is the relevance of Rasagura? What makes you "too special to feel awkward"? Why on earth is Mira not going to a shrink? All these and more. Yet this book makes me feel for the characters. Even while leaving me wanting for more, this novel is one I cannot go back to reading again. What is it about some stories that leave the reader forlorn and miserable? . . . #thebodymyth #rheeamukherjee #debutnovels #womenwriting #indianwriters #womenwritingfiction #indianwomenauthors #fictionbywomen #indianauthors #indiannovel #indianenglishliterature #indianenglishwriting #penguinbooks #lovetriangle #lovestories #munchausensyndrome #bookblogger #bookrecommendation #bookreview #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #indianbookstagram #indianbookstagrammer #indianbooks #storiesthatstay #fiction #debutnovel #mentalhealth #unconventionalstories

After finishing The Body Myth by Rheea Mukherjee, I'm really looking forward to reading more from this author. We're following Mira, whose husband died after less than one year of marriage, and who turns to books and philosophy in her grief to help her make sense of the world. She has a strange, chance encounter with an intriguing couple that ends up drawing her into their orbit and shifting her worldview yet again. I LOVED the beginning and middle of this book, and particularly thought Mukherjee's writing itself was excellent, but was much less enamoured with the ending. Recommend if you like thoughtful character studies and short books written in interesting, meandering ways. 📖 #thebodymyth #bookreview #bookrecommendation #bookblogger #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #readingoutside #springreading #bibliophile #bookworm

At some point in the last week, I saw someone make a book stack as tall as them (if I find their account I’ll tag them in a comment below). The ultimate book stack, a MEGA book stack if you will. As luck would have it, I took a mental health day last Friday and decided to devote some of that time towards making my own, 5’2” book stack. 📚 If you are expecting a story of triumph this is not it, friends. My plan was to use as many giant hardcovers as possible to lay a foundation before slowly working my way up to smaller paperbacks; that plan was unsuccessful and the stack hit about three feet before collapsing beneath it’s own weight. At that point my Ma stepped in to help me brainstorm a way to make a very large stack of books that did not fall over immediately. After the hardcover base I added pretty much every single paperback I could find, placing wire bookends throughout with the hope that it would prevent any swaying (did it work? no. did that stop me from using three of them? no). 📚 After an hour of grabbing books, stacking them, re-stacking them, spilling my cup of coffee and shouting “Nala, no!” This was the end result. The mega-stack did not reach my very great height of 5’2”, but maybe the real moral of the story was patience or perseverance… JK, there is no moral, I’m just glad I didn’t break a toe. 📚 Have any of y’all tried making a mega-stack of books- and was it successful? If you’re an engineer, where exactly did I go wrong? And if this is the first time you’ve seen my face (just in general or in a while), howdy ✌🏽 📚 #bookstagram #bookish #igbooks #bookphotography #bookstack #unitedbookstagram #shelfie #meetthebookstagrammer #bibliophile #booksandcoffee #thewarmthofothersuns #stampedfromthebeginning #itsnotabouttheburqa #Iwastoldtocomealone #whatwecarry #ordinarygirls #americanpredatorbook #nogodbutgod #menwereap #justmercy #trickmirror #theendofpolicing #mytimeamongthewhites #brideofthesea #whitetiger #thekiterunner #thebodymyth #wearenevermeetinginreallife

Contemporary fiction. A young widow in the city of Suryam in India witnesses a beautiful woman having a seizure in a park, and ends up drawn into a relationship with the woman and her husband. I picked up the book because of the unconventional relationship at its core, but it also has some things to say about the different paths that can lead beyond normative convention – for the viewpoint character, that in part is her reading of dead Western philosophers, thinkers, and writers; for the other woman in the relationship, it is her take on Sufi mysticism; for the man in the relationship, it is his connection to the two women. And it is fundamentally, I think, a book about intense, painful loneliness, and the ways that the drive to connect can pull us in transgressive directions, normative directions, or both. Spent much of the book deeply uncertain how I felt about it. It seemed very invested in psychologizing everything, and it felt like it was leaving little space to read the characters’ choices and ways of relating with one another as anything other than pathological – not that the author necessarily meant to do that, but it was certainly how it hit me early in the book. I also was never quite sure what to do with the clear unreliability of the narrator, though I appreciated the effective portrayal of both her grief from the earlier loss of her husband and her searingly intense plunge into need and love during the story. Ultimately, I ended up in the ‘thumbs up’ camp. The way the book concludes is not any sort of simplistic happy ending, but it captures the complexity of their situation and seems to have much more space for not just its dysfunction but also its joy and okay-ness in a way that seems lacking earlier in the book...and in a way that perhaps implicitly explains that earlier lack. Soooo...yeah. Ultimately liked it, but I still feel a certain ambivalence about it. #book #bookstagram #booklover #bookstagrammer #bookish #novel #fiction #bookreview #novelreview #nonmonogamy #rheeamukherjee #thebodymyth

//Book discussion// QOTD: Tell me a book that surprised you to the core?! For me THE BODY MYTH is the one✨ I wonder why have I never found this on bookstagram! I'm truly mesmerized by the way the author weaves in the characters through her prodigious utterances. The relationship between Sara, who battles multiple ailments at the same time, her husband Rahil, who never turns irksome about his wife's condition and Sara's newly found friend, who has her own scars of past and is trying to vanquish them by exploring her new relationship with Sara is simply perfect and confusing at the same time! Halfway into the book and I can't sit tight till I finish it. Full review up soon😊

Human emotions can manifest in ways that cannot be comprehended and one may respond in ways which may seem odd, to cope with the circumstances. The Body Myth throws light at the different levels of coping mechanisms resorted by humans .Books talk profoundly about mental health, depression; with wisdom of a philosopher and melancholy of someone who has endured it closely. It also questions the dualism concept of mind and body. Do our thoughts cage our body? Whatever the body undergoes is it a state of being or is it a state of mind?   Body myth is a complex novel with atypical characters who dissent societal norms and carry thoughts which are radical yet very basic. The story takes place in Suryam, an imaginary city known for unique Rasagura trees .There we meet a young widow Mira and a married couple Sara and Rahil. Sara is a charismatic lady with a body cramped by her mind and suffering an unnamed illness. Circumstances and their own internal battles entangle the three in a polyamorous relation. They try to find solace in each other by feeding on each other’s emotions and residing in comforts of their needs. The story is about their dynamics shifts, loneliness, desires, progression of thoughts and love. The plot is unconventional; on top writing has indulged in philosophy, mental issues and to a great extent dealt with it convincingly because of the writer's skill in her craft. Rheea Mukherjee’s words strike like they were derived from dark cervices of minds with deep understanding of it. Every character made a mark. The narration was through Mira, a well-read teacher and is mostly written like an intimate conversation with the reader. Her internalising thoughts were profound & reflected her knowledge imbibed from books, which I personally enjoyed reading. Sara was a handful too with her contradictions; calm in the chaos, insecure yet liberated. At a few portions in the latter half, the characters grappled in maintaining emotional connect, and I failed to follow their emotional trajectory.Narrative kind of digressed and I wished it was streamlined a bit more. Towards the end it regained its charm. The end wasn’t definitive ,but isn't it how life is?( Contd)

It's true. Rejections from agents and publishers over a year before my first novel was published. It too a stubbornness and consistency I normally can't apply in my life :) thanks @boundindia for this creative that I hope inspires and holds other writers through the times of rejection. There is no end to it at any point of your career. I always say, make rejection your lover, hold it closely and make it a part of you. If you are not getting rejected you are not writing (if publication is your end goal of course only). And don't define your understanding of being a writer by publication either. If you can't help but write, then you are a writer. Want to know how many times my larger span of work has been rejected ? Over 300 times. Feel free to reach out or ask questions if you need some help. ❤️ #writers #community #writingcommunity #authorsofinstagram #rejection #writingrejection #creativewriting #thebodymyth #fiction #fictionwriters #published #publishing #MFA #literaryfiction #debutnovels
