Journeys (2019) compile A.K. Ramanujan’s journals, diaries, dreams, poetry drafts, travelogue, and passing thoughts in a book. AKR was among the first Indian English poets I read and had a lasting impact on me, some of his poems etched in my memory, especially as I read them when I first came to the USA. People say that there’s a lot of nostalgia in his writing but I relate a lot to how he straddled coming to terms with family, love, moving to America, and personal growth. I actually enjoy the nostalgia. This is a fascinating look into his private life—this kind of access into a writer I admire helped me understand and imagine who he was and what his creative process was like (to see poems from drafts to its final forms is actually a tad bit voyeuristic, not going to lie). I could have gone through my life just marveling at his poems/writings that I enjoy, appreciate the craft, etc. But reading through his insecurities, his ups and downs, and even suicidal thoughts puts so much into perspective—AKR was as human as the rest of us. When I encounter people who don’t enjoy him, I’ve been tempted in the past to ask why, to understand where in his literature we disagree so as to learn something new in the process. But when I look at it from the human angle, I am happy to leave it all alone—no ratings, no discourses, no arguments. Just a man and what he produced seems good enough to me. I’d say, this might be a little overwhelming for someone who has not read Ramanujan before—so I recommend reading his work before, if you can. Also—I thought I’d give you a glimpse of what my books become as a part of my journey of reading—they’re peppered with hoards of colorful sticky notes I write into. Featured here are a gorgeous bookmark from the local Prologue Bookshop, a pressed flower from Tamizh New Year I used to teach my 6-y-o nephew the beauty of pressing memories, and a work Christmas party booth picture from December 2023. I usually leave these behind as marks of a parallel world lived when living between the pages of this one. ( #9/2024) Journeys: A Poet’s Diary by A.K. ⚔️ Fantasy Tag 🏰 Thanks @paperydreams and @read.with.marta for the tag! Fantasy is my ultimate jam. 🐉 How do you like your fantasy books: Series or standalone? Duology is actually my favourite because it's a small commitment. YA or Adult? Adult for sure. I do enjoy some YA books but a lot of them I'm just too old for now. Plot driven, character driven or both? Both, I like to feel like I know characters but I need some good plot points as well. Favourite type of being? This is a tough one and I can't choose, it's the reason I love fantasy. Witches, fae, faeries, beings with wings, give me all of it. Favourite mythical creature/companion? Unicorns and dragons! How much romance or spice? I love a romantasy and I love spice but I also enjoy books without. I feel like I always prefer at least a little bit of romance though. Favourite tropes? ONE BED. 😂 Found family Enemies to lovers Academic rivals Favourite fantasy subgenre? Romantasy and dark academia. Favourite series? (Choose three) Throne of Glass The Daevabad Trilogy Shades of Magic Trilogy Favourite Standalone? (Choose 3) A Study in Drowning The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue Spells for Forgetting Tagged a few, hope you all have a good Sunday! #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bibliophile #reader #books #canadianreader #booknerd #tbr #2024tbr #bookworm #literature #bookishsoul #bookaddict #bookstack #booklover #instagramreads #booksofinstagram #bookish #bookshelf #fantasytag #booksandchai #booksandtea #fantasybooks

Book Evaluation 📚📖 My first encounter with the author Hannah was through Out on a Limb and I was so captivated that I had to explore her other works. I was surprised to learn that Next of Kin was her first novel. I found it utterly charming with its distinct narrative in contemporary romance. It seems Hannah entered the literary scene to share her special love stories that revolve around real life issues and individuals that are often overlooked. . Do give this one a read if you haven't already! . 🗯️Can you believe we are entering the last week of September? What's your standout memory this month? . Personally, it's been enjoying quality time with my family in Chicago! 💙💙💙 . #bookassessment #booktips #bookadvice #newtobookstagram #chicago #booksandchai

📖 Books I bought that ended my book buying ban. Every year for the past 3 years, I go on a book buying ban in January. I tend to get a lot of books on summer bookshop runs, my fall birthday and Christmas so it's a nice to slow down and an attempt to catch up on my TBR. This year I lasted until the middle of March, and I'm still on a slow down since I just booked a big trip! But, what books broke my ban? 1. Kilt Trip by @akileybooks I got this as an e-arc and loved it so much I needed it for my shelves. My partner loved the pun in the title and I am very seriously thinking I may need to go back to Scotland in 2025. 2 and 3. Tides of the Sovereign and Mantle of the World by @kategateleyauthor When I found out Kate lived on the same island as me and the book was Celtic fantasy realism I was all in. I'm about 60 pages into it and my grew up in the prairies moved to the island heart is absolutely loving it so far. And a happy Monday! I managed to sleep two nights in a row for the first time in gods know how I long so, I am crossing my fingers for a good week. What are you reading this Monday? Much to love about book shopping in Amsterdam. 1-The always lovely @theamericanbookcenter carries both European and American editions of many books. If you obsess over covers and fonts, here you have options. 2- Amsterdam has a diverse population and second-hand bookshops reflected that. They are full of wonderful finds. 3- Post book buying chai latte comes with a tulip and tastes all the better for it. What do you think? Have you browsed the bookshops in Amsterdam? Review Time ✨ Nelissa Universe: Be prepared the be transported to magical journey of experiences and emotions. This poetry collection book is both beautiful inside out, and transports to a magical journey. The poems compiled into various collections draw a very mature approach, and took me by surprise when I got the know the author is all but 15 years old. Each poem in Nalissa's Universe is a constellation of thought(s), navigating a multitude of human emotions and layers, and is a must read for anyone looking to escape into a magical tale, full of mesmerising words woven to give the reader a curated personal experience ✨ A definite read 👍🏻👍🏻 Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Books, bookish, bookgram, books to read, books everyone should read) #hyderabadfoodblogger #hyderabadbookstagram #hyderabadbook #hyderabadbookfair #RomanceBooks #hyderabadblogger #Fiction #hyderabadbooklovers #hyderabadbookstagrammer #Bookish #booknerd #BooksAndChai #Bookworm #ReadersOfInstagram #AmReading #BookNerd #InstaBooks #BookishFeatures #BookPhotography #Bibliophile #ReadersOfInstagram #BookishLife #BookObsessed #BookRecommendations #BookReview #Bookaholic #YABooks #ClassicBooks

📖 10/50 After the Forest by Kell Woods ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed the first half of the book. A post Hansel and Gretel retelling with a dark side, some witchiness and some mystery. But then the protagonist, Greta, made a decision that I didn't agree with, and didn't feel that it had enough backing for it to make sense for her. I actually put the book down for a bit after that I was so frustrated. I eventually picked up back up but, the second half just didn't have the same feel as the first. It had a lot of promise but fell flat overall for me. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bibliophile #reader #books #canadianreader #booknerd #tbr #2024tbr #bookworm #literature #bookishsoul #bookaddict #bookstack #booklover #instagramreads #booksofinstagram #bookish #bookshelf #aftertheforest #kellwoods #illumicrate #specialeditionbooks #booksandchai #booksandtea #booksandcoffee

Grief’s burden heavy, yet we find a way, Through simple acts, we face the day. In each sunrise, hope’s gentle ray, Guides us through darkness, come what may…. Woven with the voices of Oskar, his grandparents and others against the backdrop of significant historical events such as the 9/11 attacks and World War II, the book unfolds as a mosaic of experiences, memories, and emotions. It intricately weaves sorrow into its pages and makes us empathise deeply with the characters’ struggles and share in their emotional burdens, tears, joys and everything in between. This masterful work of fiction makes us embark on a journey of discovery that navigates the terrain of closure and understanding in the face of tragedy, delves into the depths of survivor’s guilt and the weight of unresolved trauma, grapples with the profound sense of loss and longing that permeates the human experience, and illuminates the transformative power of remembrance. #extremelyloudandincrediblyclose #bookreview #loveforbooks📚 #coffeeandbooks #booksandreviews #fictionmatters #bookstagrammed #thebookoholics #thereaders #unwindandread #thereaderslounge #booklovers #kitabikeedaofficial #bookworms #booksandchai #booknotes #bookaddict #booksofinstagram #booknerd #bibliophile

I read this such a long time ago but need to share this sequel to the Ex Hex. It's so witchy and magical and fun to read! I was driving on a road trip with my cousin in the dead of the night on a pitch black highway between Arizona and Nevada when I first heard about this book and its author, Peggy Mohan, on the podcast “The Seen and The Unseen” with Amit Varma (by now you must have guessed I really enjoy many recommendations that come from there). This is an absolutely fascinating read. While a little repetitive in some places, I felt it work well over time as the repetition helped me get the patterns and concepts in linguistics. I am a huge history and languages buff. To find a good book at the intersection of the two, against the backdrop of a socio-economic, and cultural setup was the perfect combination. I had to take a few breaks on and off while reading this as it can be a little heavy and a tad bit bit academic. I had a giant CVS receipt for a bookmark with one end marking the page I was reading and the other end lingering in the notes section. There are close to 40 pages of just notes and I can get compulsive with having to read the notes real-time. The book addresses languages as living, breathing ecosystems that continue to change and shift in response to their surroundings. A big theme is about how male migrations into the country (e.g., the Indo-Aryans) leads to them taking local wives. In this setup, the child first learns the mother’s language for the first few years of its life followed by the ‘father’s language.’ It lent a completely new lens to the way I treat the ‘mother tongue’ phrase back home. It illustrates the differences between pidgins, creoles, full languages, etc., and aspects of linguistics. Do pick this book up. It offers us a different way to look at history. For the amount of social and religious unrest we may have in India, it helps for us to look at history for what it is—a series of events that happened in a frame of time, decisions made, and most importantly a conqueror’s recount. There is value to treat history as history, learn and grow from it but not wield it as a tool to spread hate or establish supremacy. I FINALLY made it to another cafe I have been meaning to check out for literal months, I’m just usually not up and ready in time to make it before they close. Today, I got lucky! I have been following The Rescue Cafe since I moved closer to it. I myself have a long history in the cat rescue community, and y’all already know my love of chai and coffee shops. It’s like everything I love all wrapped in to one! They don’t have cats here all the time, but I believe they do have an event every few weeks/months where some adoptable kitties get dropped off for cat cafe fun. I got a toasted marshmallow mocha chai, and omg it was so good. I have not had one single bad chai since I started visiting these local spots, they seriously know what’s up. Also, the blueberry coffee cake? To. die. for. They also have a leave one take one little library inside!! I need to start getting up earlier so I can hang out here and read. 📍Rescue Cafe | Fairhaven MA . . . . . #chailover #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #coffeeshop #icedchailatte #coffee #catrescue #catsofinstagram #animalrescue #rescuecats #booklover #booksbooksbooks #readmorebooks #bakery #coffeetime #bookaddict #booksandchai #darkromance #fantasy #booksta #southcoastma #fairhavenma

✨️Book Review✨️ I am distraught. In pain. Reeling. It’s like someone ripped my heart out, stomped on it, and then put it back in.  Don’t you love when the forbidden lovers trope actually lives up to its name. Again, I literally screamed.  This book has all the fantasy vibes. This book is like if the Hunger Games and Red Queen had a baby. This was definitely a dystopian romantasy. There’s so much to say. I loved the fight scenes, I loved the characters, the plot twists, and the cute little moments the main characters had,  I love the tension between Paedyn and Kai; it's drawn out and adds so much to the story. I love their banter so much. HE CALLS HER DARLING AHHHH. I love Kai. I love his name, too.  I love Paedyn. She’s your typical fantasy FMC, but she has her moments. If you hadn’t already figured, the ending killed me. I am so so so glad the sequel is coming out soon. If you haven’t added this to your tbr already, I suggest you do it immediately because this book is so good. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll scream a bit more about it

Saturday is for Short Stories! I MEANT IT ONCE by Kate Doyle In 2024, I've committed to reading a short story collection a month. I love them! I'm especially a sucker for linked stories, even if vaguely. In Kate Doyle's debut collection, I Meant It Once, anything can serve as the connective tissue: characters, yes, but also a location, a foreign language, even a food. And although I'm well past this time in life, I can get into reading about 20-something women struggling to find their way, making choices and forming relationships as they begin to separate from their families and become who they will be. If these two elements are also facets of your reading jam, this book might be a good fit for you! Many thanks to @algonquinbooks for always sending me such varied and interesting books! As with all collections, some stories are stronger than others. There's an existential angst, sometimes leavened with humor, that runs through all of them, though. It's not pretty, this time of life--there's obsession, longing, messiness, uncertainty, misbegotten love and relationships. And yet, there's a beauty to the necessary fumbling about as these young women try to make their way and find their place in the world. In my favorite, “Aren’t We Lucky,” a seemingly eternal house renovation serves as a metaphor for a deeply dysfunctional family. The rot goes deep, but the story captures, with such pathos and humor, the dynamics of one uniquely messed-up set of parents and their young adult children. Another highlight for me is called Cinnamon Baseball Coyote. I'm not going to reveal where that title comes from, but trust me, it's worth it. I stayed up late finishing this collection--I was hooked@from the first story. It's a cozy, rainy day here, and I love me a hot beverage in this weather. I recently tried a chocolate chai, shown here with the book and my friend's vanilla latte. Yum! ☕️

I never posted a review of this book even though it was the second book I read last year. Tbh I didn’t really care to articulate my thoughts on this - this book was just pure lighthearted fun. It was entertaining, and with every plot twist and I laughed out loud in disbelief. It was also a great third book from Taylor Reid Jenkins for me - in the sense that I finally understood her thing. Every character has an emotional intention, and the tension in the book is released only in closure and some sort of understanding of a tumultuous relationship. And she nails the before and afters - the switching between decades, that’s a constant. This book peaked in the number of characters and plot twists though. If I had to critique something it would be that the main characters in the story are always given depth, but the secondary and filler characters - they are not just left as secondary. They are tried to be depicted in the same emotionally motivated light, which is then compressed into one or two sentences at the end of a chapter. It then ends up seeming a bit too linear and oversimplified of a life arc. I caught myself at moments finding it unfair that a characters life long trauma and problem was worded in a sentence and greeted with a solution in the next. But a fun lighthearted read nonetheless. Definitely a good replacement for a gossipy reality tv show binge. And regardless of my critique, I will continue to read TJR books. No one writes about interpersonal relationships in a way that’s so easy to read.

✨️BOOK REVIEW✨️ Crown of Earth and Sky by Emberly Ash First of all, thank you to Netgalley and Emberly Ash for this ARC. This was my first read of 2024, It did not disappoint.  I was hooked from the first chapter. This is an enemies-to-lover spicy fantasy-romance. I consider this book fast-paced, but some could consider this to be a slow burn. I like how the enemies didn’t immediately turn into lovers. The tension was drawn out throughout the book.  I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy! If you loved From Blood and Ash, you’ll love this!

✨️BOOK REVIEW✨️ Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 THIS BOOOK>>>> EVAJACKS>>>>>> Everyone, go pick this series up right now. It’s fabulous. 💝 This book gave me everything I wanted and more. I felt all the emotions, all the betrayals, and twists in my soul. It was stunning.💘 I love how Jacks has changed since Legendary (Caraval Book 2). You can see the character development and how he has changed from the Cold Fate he once was. 💔 I love how Evangeline grew, but more than that, I love how she stayed true to her beliefs, especially regarding love.💓 The villains were very villainy. I hated them. I annotated that every time they popped up. I didn't expect the extent of their evilness, but it made the story so much better. 💘 The story was so well written, the tension carried over well from the last book, and honestly, this was so entertaining to read. 💖 I want more of this universe of Stephanie Garber's writing. I'm assuming there will be more books relating to these characters, or at least The Magnificent North, especially after the epilogue of ACFTL. In all honesty, I'd pick up a book about LaLa or Chaos in a heartbeat.💞 Honestly, dear readers, this series made me fall in love with love. 💔💖✨️

✨️BOOK REVIEW✨️ I'm writing this minutes after finishing this book, and all I can say is my mind is BLOWN. This has to be one of my favorite reads this year. I picked it up because of the title, and needless to say, it did not disappoint. I finished it in 5 hours. Trystan, our lovely lovely villain, is the perfect morally anti-hero. He had me kicking my feet and giggling. I absolutely loved Evie. She was somehow sunshine and morally-grey at once, and I love how she slowly became more and more of a “villain.” I genuinely thought I knew exactly where this story was going, and I was wrong, which I LOVE. Aside from Trystan and Evie, Kingsley was my favorite character. AND DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE TENSION. The slow burn in this book is exquisite. The end killed me. August needs to come tomorrow, but I can breathe easier knowing Hannah Nicole Maehrer announced the sequel. This book had me gasping for air, both out of laughter and anxiety. This book is an addicting concoction of grumpy/sunshine, morally-grey heros, and plot twists. If that is your kind of vibe, I would definitely pick this up.

Mental health and books - my experience I know we talk about escaping to wonderlands through books or getting to know a million lives through books - all that is true. But what lies underneath these statements? Essentially, it means that books makes living better by improving our mental health. Reading is meditative. When you read, you focus on something outside of you that takes you inward. It takes over your vision and your imagination. Trust me, I have used reading as meditation a thousand different times. That joy you get by escaping into a different world is not just joy - it’s your brain right after you get therapy. Books saved me, among many other things. But books. Saved. "Good Hours" by Robert Frost I had for my winter evening walk— No one at all with whom to talk, But I had the cottages in a row Up to their shining eyes in snow. And I thought I had the folk within: I had the sound of a violin; I had a glimpse through curtain laces Of youthful forms and youthful faces. I had such company outward bound. I went till there were no cottages found. I turned and repented, but coming back I saw no window but that was black. Over the snow my creaking feet Disturbed the slumbering village street Like profanation, by your leave, At ten o’clock of a winter eve. This happened to be one of those books, but surprisingly, I found myself reading it continuously, and before I knew it, I had reached the final page.   Things I liked about the book  Short and simple book with an unusual storyline Love the way the lead character Margaret Small was developed. I could vividly picture her. A tinge of mystery added made it more interesting. Gives you a peek into the experiences and perspectives of individuals with disabilities, especially back in the 90s. Storytelling - seamless transition between 1947 and 2015. Overall it was a good and quick read. #bookreview #bookstagram #booksandchai

First of all, I'd like to say thank you so much, Lauren and Bookfunnel, for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review! Thoughts before reading: I found out about this book while scrolling through reels for my next read. The worldbuilding caught me; earning your powers through a series of tests is something I haven't come across in a book in years. I'm hoping this isn't a Hunger Games-style competition that often feels repeated in many fantasy books. I'm excited to dive in, read this over the next few days, and fill in my thoughts after reading this book! Thoughts after reading: I'm so glad my original thought of this being another version of another Hunger Games-style book was so off. Of course, there's nothing wrong with The Hunger Games books; they're a favorite of my teenage reading years, and I still enjoy the movies. Getting back to the topic at hand, I love the characters of War Hour so freaking much!! Sar is so badass! Evander can jump off a cliff into icy waters. I like that Lysta wasn't just the chosen one for reasons undisclosed and worked at becoming someone worthy of the opportunities that she is given. A lot of what happens to her is out of her control, but she actively tries and isn't a passive character. I really liked this book, so I'll give it a 4.5 stars out of 5. I can't wait to see what Lauren Loscig writes next! #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookreadersofinstagram #goodreads #fantasy #readersofinstagram #bookreview #bookworm #booksandchai #arc #review #bookreview #debutnovelist

“Flowers for Algernon” is a book which prompts us to reflect on what it means to be human in a world where everything is increasingly dominated by being smart whether in technology or individuals. It is an emotional journey of Charlie Gordon, a man born with intellectual disabilities. The story unfolds through Charlie’s own progress reports as he undergoes an experimental procedure to boost his intelligence. In the beginning Charlie’s writing is simplistic and childish reflecting his limited abilities but as his intelligence expands, you witness his transformation into a brilliant individual coping with complex ideas and self reflection. The peak of his genius is marked by a profound loneliness, as he struggles to connect with others who can’t keep pace with his intellect. Despite the newfound brilliance, Charlie becomes acutely aware of the isolation that comes with his elevated mental faculties. The narrative is a rollercoaster of emotions, from the initial excitement of intellectual progress to the somber realization of the sacrifices made along the way. Continued in comments ……

I’m keeping the Halloween vibes going this week with my Friday Read, Molly Harper’s WITCHES GET STUFF DONE. If you are a fan of witches, spirits, and romance, you will fall under the spell of this magical read! Riley Everett has no idea what she is in for when she travels to Starfall Point to claim her inheritance, a large Victorian house, that just happens to be haunted and her legacy is to become the new caretaker of the house and all it’s secrets. It just so happens the town librarian Edison Held has always been fascinated by Shaddow House and now he is also fascinated by Riley. With Edison by her side and some newfound friends to support her quest, and her aunt’s journals Riley is ready to take on the ghosts and her family’s legacy. A fun read that pairs nicely with a spicy cup of Chai topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon. “Atonement” by Ian McEwan is a multi-layered novel that spans several decades and explores the consequences of a fateful mistake. Thirteen year old ,Briony Tallis a complex young girl with a keen sense of observation and vivid imagination often blurs the lines between reality and her perceptions. Creative and intelligent, she aspires to be a writer, and her storytelling instincts drive the narrative. However, this same imagination leads her to misunderstand a crucial event, setting off a chain of events that become the focal point of the story. The story begins in 1935 at the Tallis family estate, when Briony misinterprets a meeting between her sister Cecilia and Robbie Turner, the son of the family’s housekeeper. This misjudgment leads to a false accusation that alters the lives of those involved. As World War II unfolds, the narrative follows Cecilia and Robbie separately, detailing the impact of Briony’s accusation on their experiences. The novel masterfully captures the fragility of love and the haunting shadows of war. Through the characters journeys, we witness the profound impact of seeking redemption and the transformative nature of genuine remorse. It’s a tale of how the pursuit of atonement can shape destinies, and how the passage of time can either heal or deepen the wounds caused by a momentary lapse. #coffeeandbooks #booksandreviews #fictionmatters #bookstagrammed #thebookoholics #thereaders #unwindandread #thereaderslounge #booklovers #kitabikeedaofficial #bookworms #booksandchai #booknotes #bookaddict #booksofinstagram #booknerd #bibliophile #atonement

What’s special about 6o’ clock? …………………….. Her duty done, she comes back to the bedroom. For few moments she is undecided what to do. This, of course, is an inevitable aspect of boredom. One has time on one’s hand, but is frequently at a loss to know how to use it. She then picks up a book from the bed, riffles through the pages and puts it down. . . @orange_rust #captions #girlinacity #newpost #newinterest #readings #instalike #instadailypic #stilllife #reelsonwriters #poetsofinstagram #poetrycommunity #poetsofig #deadpoetssociety #writersofinstagram #writerscommunity #writersnetwork #artandcrafts #oldhindisongs #rainydaybitescookbookclub #readandwrite #eveningsky #booksandcoffee #booksandchai #lifeofarandomgirl #instagramwriterscommunity #poetsofbangalore #chailover #thewriterscommunity #bangalorevlogger

Thanks @NetGalley for the e-copy ARC! I both read the ARC and listened to the audiobook. It was interesting to see/hear the subtle changes made throughout now that it’s a finished work. I listened to Falling last year and liked it so when I heard Newman was releasing another I had to add it to my tbr. Both are perfect summer reads that hold your attention. In Drowning we are given the POVs from both those in the trapped cabin, the rescue crew, and the estranged wife of one of the passengers. Newman has an incredible inner knowledge of airplanes, protocols, and goodness her imagination with these novels makes you wonder how she wrote these without experiencing it firsthand! That knowledge makes these stories so much more realistic but as long as you don’t have a fear of flying, you shouldn’t be too paranoid to step onto a plane after reading either of her novels. Content and trigger warnings include tragedy violence and death, drowning, loss of child/spouse, profanity. Have you read Falling or Drowning?
