Although hypertension is a leading cause of kidney disease, there is a type of hypertension that is actually caused by kidney disease. Inflammation is a defense mechanism for the body, that provides protection from anything that may cause bodily harm. This includes chemicals, injuries, and pathogens.  Accute inflammation is a temporary inflammatory response, and it usually lasts a few days to a few weeks (such as the stomach flu, a paper cut, or pain and swelling if you bump your knee).🌱 On the other hand, chronic inflammation occurs when the specialised cells in the accute inflammation process aren't cleared out, and tissues damage may occur resulting in more cells that are called in to assist. 😰 Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) include Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and are the most common form of thyroid dysfunction, affecting women more than men 😰 These conditions are the outcome of complex interactions between environmental and genetic factors resulting in reactivity to self-thyroid antigens causing inflammation and affecting the secretion of thyroid hormones. In the case of Graves’ disease, autoantibodies bind to TSH receptors typically leading to stimulation of the thyroid gland and hyperthyroidism. On the other hand, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is characterised by lymphocytic infiltration, inflammation and hypothyroidism. Major environmental triggers of AITD include medications, infection, smoking, stress and iodine. There is also growing evidence showing a role for diet in preventing, delaying or reversing the expression of genetically determined autoimmune diseases. Numerous nutritional deficiencies have been identified as contributing factors to the cause of thyroid disorders and include vitamin D, selenium, magnesium, coenzyme Q10 and alpha-lipoic acid. Salmon + Broccoli - store cupboard magic Pan fried 2 salmon fillets with a squeeze of lemon juice and a grated garlic clove; meanwhile added broccoli florets to the pan; the salmon cooked quickest so I took it out to rest added another squeeze of lemon; a small handful of capers; a bit of chopped dill and a shadazzle of the lemon zest 🍋 Absolutely delicious! Here’s another way of making an infused herbal oil. I’m making a small batch of Ivy and Birch infused olive oil. There are other ingredients in it too. I’ll be sharing the recipe and explaining about what it’s for in due course so keep an eye on my posts if you’re curious about that. I’ve put the herbs and the oil into a Kilner jar and it’s sitting in a water bath in a slow cooker. I want to apply gentle heat but not to ‘cook’ the foliage. This year, so far, it hasn’t been sunny enough for this to be done using passive solar infusion. The slow cooker is switched onto the warm setting for only 1-2 hours each day over a period of around 7 to 10 days. It works well for me because I can switch it on when I come into my clinic and I know that I can switch it off again in a gap between consultations. A double boiler could also be used but they need more active tending. Inflammation is a complex process involving many cellular events and the production of pro-inflammatory proteins and enzymes. All instances of an immediate inflammatory response is defined as an Acute response but after 30 days it becomes Chronic. An acute inflammatory response is a needed entity and generally is self-limiting, ie., the response goes away over time when healing has taken place (generally 1-2 weeks). The inflammatory response is a destructive process. The enzymes and proteins that are released trigger all kinds of cellular events resulting not only in tissue damage and damaged tissue removal, but also impacts blood circulation and even normal cellular function on certain levels. This process is necessary as it helps protect the body, however, if it continues or becomes out of control, it can be a very damaging event. This is when acute inflammation becomes chronic. The longer this process continues on a cellular level, the more damaging it is and then becoming more difficult to manage therapeutically. Chronic inflammation and oxidative cellular stress are the two main processes responsible for aging in general. This is why we get gray hairs, wrinkles, loss of function of our joints, vision, hearing, etc. Like embers waiting for a trigger to fire them up. While we cannot eliminate the embers, our goal is to control them and keep them from igniting (flare ups). To control inflammation fully, we must address all triggers. It is a challenge, some easier than others, but the process of inflammation itself is very complex.
