Thank you to Usborne for sending me an arc copy for review! #adpr This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, I have loved every book by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé and Adiba Jaigirdar, Four Eids and a Funeral included! I loved that this really was a friends to enemies to lovers book, and it was very emotional throughout. Tiwa and Said had to work together to save the local Islamic Centre after a fire. The Mayor was an asshole and everyone makes such valid points as to why it is necessary to the Muslim community. Throughout the book there is a lead up to Eid, and everyone seems worried about what will happen, as the Islamic Centre is closed - safety wise. They come together as a community to try and save the centre from being demolished, but also to celebrate Eid together no matter what, which I thought was beautiful. I loved Laddoo the cat! I really wish he had more page time though. Said and Tiwa end up sharing the cats custody after their favourite librarian dies and leaves the cat to them in her will, therefore forcing the together again. Said’s artistic skills were really up for the challenge and I really wish there was some artwork available to see the mural he painted and it really seems beautiful and although I can imagine it, I think seeing an actual artwork of it would make it wven more amazing. Tiwa and Said really did not like eachother and the reason why getd revealed much later in the book than I would have liked, but it did make sense. I am glad they found their way back to eachother because I really feel like these characters belong together! I am also glad that these characters were chasing their dreams throughout this emotional book, there are friendships remade and found, a community coming together, wants and dreams, heartbreaks and celebrations - I definitely recommend everyone picks this book up. Overall, I really enjoyed Four Eids and a Funeral and I am giving it 4 stars! Really excited to see what comes next from both authors! 🐚⭒ Books I'll always recommend ⭒🪼 I've been wanting to share some of my favourite books on here for a while now so here I am. These are all books that I think about a lot and we're all rated 4.5-5 stars. The ones put on the last two slides are either because the stack would've been wayyyy too big if I included them (the ones I own), I read them digitally (dear Wendy) or I borrowed them from the library so I don't have them anymore (except for ihtdfy, I still have it but I hadn't read it yet when I took this photo 😔). No seu desafio de construir um negócio, ela se vê em um impasse quando nota que a menina de que gosta acaba tendo a mesma ideia que ela, reproduzindo a sua cultura sem de fato conviver com ela, uma forma de apropriação, para se beneficiar. Inicia-se então um tipo de rivalidade que vai acompanhá-la por todo o livro, guerreando junto com os sentimentos de confronto, rivalidade, e afeição. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Infelizmente Nishat também enfrenta algumas situações bem ruins, como homofobia e racismo, e o próprio apagamento da sua cultura, o que é horrível, pois de todas as formas tentar invalidar quem ela é. Acho incrível como ela foi forte enfrentar muitas das suas dificuldades, e tem uma garra impressionante. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Gostei bastante de ver uma protagonista brasileira no livro, ela é determinada, e apesar de ser rival da protagonista em alguns momentos, em suas conversas dá para notar várias características nossas que são bem reproduzidas. Da lese ich nämlich meistens sowieso nur Bücher nochmal, wo ich weiß, dass sie mir gefallen haben. Deswegen findet ihr auch ein paar meiner liebsten in den Empfehlungen. 🫶 Als Zweites kamen mir funny Lovestories in den Sinn, bzw. einfach Stories, wo ich nicht so viel nachdenken muss und die einfach Spaß machen. Da hab ich einmal meine liebste Romance Autorin Lily Gold für euch und eine Dark Romance Empfehlung, die ich einfach verschlungen habe! 🔥 Weiterhin heitern mich gute Graphic Novels und Comics auf, weil schöne Bilder = ✨️😍. Als nächstes fällt mir einfach mein momentanes comfort Genre ein und das ist magical realism. Da möchte ich euch die Reihe von Anne Lück einmal ans Herz legen. Gleich passend dazu, weil es mich einfach entspannt beim Lesen, sind gute Jugendbücher. Mir ist da Starcrossed eingefallen, weil ich da einfach sehr viel Spaß beim Lesen hatte und die Geschichte und Charaktere sehr mochte. 🤌🏻 So und dann zum Schluss noch einfach sapphic stories, weil ja was soll ich da noch zu sagen. January Reading Wrap-Up What has been your reading highlight of the beginning of 2024 so far? I know for a fact that buddy reading A Power Unbound with @neera_exlibris and @cabeswriter_ was always going to be the highlight of January (see previous post for snippets of our unhinged comments section on the buddy read section of StoryGraph). Another big highlight was Something More (I made my brother living in the USA send over the HB for Christmas – PB is being published in Australia mid-year though!), a YA contemporary with an autistic, Palestinian MC (review coming tomorrow!!) The Henna Wars By Adiba Jaigirdar My rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ (3/5) Nishat is a bit of an outsider at school. But when she comes up with a cool idea for her business class competition, she would not have imagined that the cute new girl, Flavia, was going to take her idea. The two get closer, and have to navigate family and high school pressures. This was a YA coming of age romance. I loved reading about the henna, the cute romance moments, and the friendships. I will say that Nishat goes through A LOT in this book. I like to read about challenges and adversity, but this book was too much for me. The bullying, racism, homophobia, betrayal and rejection consumes the plot. I wouldn't describe this as dark, but it can be emotionally exhausting. I think this author's next book "Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating" is better. If you are looking for a sapphic YA coming of age book, I recommend that book first. Natomiast w szkole uczniowie otrzymują zadanie, polegające na tym, by założyć swój biznes, a ten, który okaże się najlepszy, otrzyma nagrodę pieniężną. Jednak gdy Niszat wpada na genialny pomysł otworzenia biznesu z henną, ponieważ jest to część jej kultury, okazuje się, że Flavia (dziewczyna, która podoba się Niszat) wpadła na ten sam pomysł. 🤍 Przyznam szczerze, że miałam z tą książką taką hate-love relationship i finalnie nadal nie wiem co o niej sądzić. Polubiłam główną bohaterkę i trzymałam kciuki za to, by udało jej się z jej biznesem. Nie polubiłam natomiast Flavii, która zgapiła pomysł od Niszat… Ewidentnie nie jestem fanką motywu „rivals to lovers”. Sięgnęłam po tę książkę, bo chciałam przeczytać coś lekkiego, ale tutaj było tyle przykrych sytuacji, jedna po drugiej, że to aż mnie zniechęcało do dalszego czytania… Pewnie nie tylko ja tak mam, ale gdy czytam książkę to trochę wczuwam się w rolę głównego bohatera, dlatego przysięgam, że krew mi się w żyłach gotowała w pewnych momentach. Nie podobało mi się zakończenie, bo przeprosiny to zdecydowanie za mało po tym, przez co Niszat musiała przejść przez Flavię i jej kuzynkę. Poza tym przy końcu to wszystko potoczyło się jakoś tak… za szybko? Czegoś definitywnie tam zabrakło. Na plus jest zdecydowanie relacja Niszat i jej siostry, Priti, na którą zawsze mogła liczyć oraz przedstawienie kultury bengalskiej. Książka porusza temat homofobii, rasizmu i dyskryminacji.

Physical (library) ⭐⭐⭐ -Adult fantasy/Horror -🌈 Poly love -Found Family Deliciously gothic and 🌈. Beautifully written but too short for my taste, It just felt like we glossed over everything, yet it was extremely easy to get into. I was expecting more of everything. Flash Review: The Henna Wàrs by Adiba Jaigirdar. Audiobook (borrowbox) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ -Sapphic YA Romance -Rivals/Competition I finally got around to reading this! I’m so glad I did. Not an easy read. Nishat deals with racism, homophobia (including from her parents) and bullying the entire book. Its even difficult to cheer on the romance because of this. Ile książek udało się wam przeczytać w listopadzie? Jaki był najgorszy i najlepszy tytuł ubiegłego miesiąca? Listopad skończyłam z naprawdę świetnym wynikiem 13 przeczytanych powieści. Jakościowo mogło być lepiej, ale udało mi się znaleźć parę pozycji, które na dłużej zostaną w moim sercu. A oto wszystkie: 1. "Milczenie dziewcząt" Pat Barker 4/5- recenzja w osobnym poście 2. "Psyche i Eros" Luna MacNamara 3/5- recenzja w osobnym poście 3. The Henna Wars. Miłość pisana henną " Adita Jaigirdar 3/5- bardzo przyjemna i lekka młodzieżówka, które nie uciekła od znanych schematów, ale okazała się przyjemnym odmożdżaczem. Podejrzewam, że nie zapamiętam jej jednak na długo (już w tym momencie ciężko mi wskazać konkretne elementy fabuły, które były w moim odczuciu gorsze) 4. "Grudniowy dom" Magda Knedler 4/5- recenzja w osobnym poście 5. "Ziemianki" Marta Strzelecka 2/5- niestety po wspaniałych reportażach, jakie ostatnio czytałam ten okazał się rozczarowaniem. Książce brakowało struktury, bo skaczemy z tematu na temat bez żadnego uporządkowania, a przedstawione informacje w moim odczucie nie wyczerpują złożoności tematu. an appreciation post for adiba jaigirdar (@dibs_j) and her ya books about queer brown girls. the books here feature queer brown desi irish girls in the books and on the covers, and the stories are immersed with muslim and bangladeshi culture. 🍩 the dos and donuts of love (2023): shireen malik applies to be on a new tv show called the junior irish backing show because the prize money would help her family's donut shop. she's selected for the show, along with her recently ex-girlfriend chris who she is determined not to fall for again. i loved the food puns and flirting and pining. pro tip, get yourself donuts to eat while you read this because you WILL want some. 📝 hani and ishu's guide to fake dating (2021): hani (humaira) khan comes out to her friends as bi and they invalidate her because she's only dated guys (boo biphobia). hani lies and says she's dating ishu (ishita), an academic overachiever their friend group doesn't like. ishu agrees to help hani if hani helps her become more popular so she can become head girl, which will help with college applications. fake dating is my catnip, and watching these two bengali girls fall in love was fun. also i took my best disney photo ever while holding hani & ishu, so i am showing off the photo again. ✍🏽 the henna wars (2020): a school competition has students create their own small businesses, and nishat decides to do a henna business because it's part of her culture. a classmate named flavia decides to also run a henna business, and the two fall for each other as they compete and talk about cultural appropriation and being brown in a sea of white people. i don't have a million to one, but i'm hoping to buy it soon! So, it was a breath of fresh air when I heard that Adiba Jaigirdar had a new YA book. She is one of the very few YA authors whose works I've immensely enjoyed.🙌🏼 🍩Her latest, "THE DOS AND DONUTS OF LOVE," is a heartwarming story about second chance romance, friendship, and baking, while shedding light on the challenges faced by marginalized women of color. If you're a fan of The Great British Baking Show, this one's for you! The story revolves around Shireen, a talented baker with dreams of opening a Bengali dessert shop. She's dealing with a recent breakup when she's accepted into the Junior Irish Baking Show, a potential game-changer for her career and her parents' donut shop. But things get a bit complicated when her ex, Chris, is also a contestant. 🌟WHY I LOVED IT🌟 -It's a fun and lighthearted read but doesn't shy away from addressing racism, homophobia, and microaggressions. -The queer love story between two women of color💕 -Foodies will adore all the food and desserts mentioned. Also, if you love GBBO, you’ll appreciate the references to The Great British Baking Show, and the author's nod to key figures from the show. -The competition aspect is well-executed, with plenty of tension, making it a central plot point without neglecting subplots like the love triangle, friendship with Fatima, and family -The chapter titles, with their cute puns related to desserts, brought a smile to my face.🧁 -Jaigirdar captures the concerns and struggles of teens effectively, touching on issues like friendship and identity. Today is #NationalComingOutDay here in Australia, so to celebrate, I put together a stack of some of my favourite coming out stories. No coming out story will ever be the same, even when there are similarities. Also, coming out is unfortunately not a one-time event. When you’re queer, you spend your life coming out over and over again, sometimes in spaces that feel comfortable to do so and sometimes in spaces that terrify you. It’s exhausting and sometimes frustrating, but I try to always wear my queerness with pride.
