Happy Wednesday everybody!! Inching closer to the weekend😊 Coming in with 2 recs today - both books I couldn't put down. Both well researched. Both heartbreaking,. Both hopeful. Both historical fiction. Both superbly written. Both left my heart hurting and my mind reeling! Dust Child was the #hfbookclub pick for April and it was stunning. From the author of The Mountains Sing, Que Mai once again masterfully brings a story to life, begun in Vietnam, with dual time lines, 1969 & 2016 . Phong, is an Amerasian "dust child", born to a Vietnamese woman and an American GI.Decades after the war, Phong is intent on finding both his parents and a way to America for a new, better life for his family. Dan, an American Vet, returns to Vietnam wirh his wife to quiet the ghosts of his past and heal his PTSD, only to face long buried secrets. Trang and her sister,Quynh, flee their village to work as Sai Gon barmaids in order to earn money to help their parents with crippling debt only to find corruption, deception and devastating heartbreak. As their lives intersect, across circumstances and loss, beauty , grace, forgiveness and hope can be found . A Child for the Reich was a giveaway win and on my #backlistbooks24 Thank you @mommaleighellensbooknook.. When Anna Dankova's young blond haired, blue eyed daughter is literally taken from her arms by the Germans, she now knows the rumors are true. Czech children are being stolen, renamed, adopted and raised as German. Anna vows she will get Ema back by whatever means it takes and her journey takes her deep into the very heart of darkness- a facility for the Lebensborn program. A page turner of courage, determination and a mother's love. Looking forward to reading more books by both of these authors! #dustchild #algonquinbooks #nguyễnphanquếmaiauthor #vietnamwar #amerasianchildren #achildforthereich #andienewtonauthor #onemorechapter #backlistbooks24 #historicalfiction #WWIInovels #lebensbornprogram

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The story, told from the Czech perspective, is both wonderful and heartbreaking. I was appalled to recently learn about the #LebensbornSociety and its expansion into several occupied European countries. The narrative centers around Czech Aryan-like children who were taken by the so-called "brown sisters" and placed in newly established children's homes. These children were eventually adopted by "good Germans." The novel follows the journey of Anna, a mother consumed by grief, as she risks everything to get her daughter back. Her adventure is filled with danger, luck, and heartbreak. The book's final chapter moved me to tears. It's been a while since a novel's conclusion has evoked such a strong emotional response from me. I know that I will remember this story and its characters for a long time. In summary, the book offers insight into yet another form of Nazi propaganda and the devastating loss that so many endured at the hands of the Nazis. It's a raw and honest account that doesn't shy away from the truth. I found it to be a fantastic read and would like to extend my gratitude to #AndieNewton for crafting such a magnificent story. Book Review : A Child for the Reich by Andie Newton 3.5 stars What I most appreciated about this book was it was a side of history I hadn’t come across before. The Nazi party taking children from invaded countries and raising them as German children. A heartbreaking and terrifying theme that made for an emotional read. I did struggle with the pace at the start, but once the setting moved to Germany, I was hooked and loved the palpable tension. I was literally speed reading with my heart in my mouth. Anna is testimony to the power of a mother’s love and what they will do to keep their child safe. Recommended if you like WWII historical fiction with tense and harrowing moments. 📖Book Blurb 📖 Rumours of the Nazis coming for Czech children swept through the villages like a breeze through the trees, and the story was always the same… They wanted our children to raise as their own. Since her husband, Josef, joined the Czech resistance three years ago, Anna Dankova has done everything possible to keep her daughter, Ema, safe. But when blonde haired, blue-eyed Ema is ripped from her mother’s arms in the local marketplace by the dreaded Brown Sisters, nurses who were dedicated to Hitler’s cause, Anna is forced to go to new extremes to take back what the Nazis have stolen from her. Going undercover as a devoted German subject eager to prove her worth to the Reich, the former actress takes on a role of a lifetime to find and save her daughter. But getting close to Ema is one thing. Convincing her that the Germans are lying when they claim Anna stole her from her true parents is another… #Eirebookstagram #irishbookstas #booklover #irishbookblogger #bibliophile #irishbookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookworm #reading #bookreview #achildforthereich

What's your first main current read for the year? I decided to pick this library book up and on audio through audio and I'm about halfway through now and can't stop listening to this once I pick it up. It's so crazy for an unknown piece of WWII history known as the Lebensborn program during WWII. If you don't know what that it's, either go Google it or YouTube a video and get into it. It's so horrible and a crazy secret project SS officer Himmler came up with and just sickening. In a nutshell, basically ANY children in other occupied countries who has a particular look to pass for a German (preferably blue eyed and blonde haired) were then taken away/kidnapped from their families and indoctrinated to become German and forget their old families and later put into other full blooded German families due to a lack of German children population or something like that. SYNOPSIS: "They’ve stolen her child And she’ll do anything to get her back Rumours of the Reich’s dreaded Brown Sisters coming for Czech children swept through the villages like a breeze through the trees, but the story was always the same. “A Child for the Reich” is a heart wrenching story of a mother whose child is stolen from her by the Reich, and the brave and dangerous lengths she goes to to get her daughter back. While this story is fictional, it is based on interviews and diaries of actual survivors. The Reich did take children they felt they could pass off as Aryan from occupied countries and put them up for adoption to German families. The author wrote that when she learned of this Nazi kidnapping program, her “thoughts went straight to the mothers,” and that’s why she wanted to write this story. She did an excellent job of taking the reader along with the main character, the mother, through every emotion and fear the character felt throughout the book. A heart wrenching read. Nazi scum stole thousands of children from their homes during WWII and most were never recovered. My heart beat in fear as Anna and Desa try to shield their children from the predators. I felt Anna’s heartache and desperation as she hatched a dangerous bid to get back her child and then another child also appears. It’s a pulse pounding, have to see what happens kind of book. It does have a good ending when most of the true life stories didn’t. In Andie Newton’s novel, A Child for the Reich, Anna lives with her daughter, Ema, in the Czech Republic while her husband is off helping the Resistance counter the Nazis. Life isn’t easy. She must keep her daughter hidden, along with her sister’s children because the Brown Sisters are looking for blonde haired children that they can steal and adopt to German families to increase the Aryan population. With her sister’s name on a list, their awareness is heightened, but they must carry on as normal as possible or risk being reported by someone who is observing them. When Anna goes with a neighbor to the market to sell her vegetables and herbs, Ema is taken in the madness of the end of the market that day. Determined to get her daughter back, Anna comes up with a plan. Obtaining false documents that show her as German, Anna makes her way to Dresden to find Ema and take her back. What she doesn’t count on is the difficulty and secrecy that would be a huge part of it. Risking not only her own life, but that of her daughter, will Anna be able to take her daughter away from the Germans and make her way back home? This story truly tells that a mother will stop at nothing to get back her child and keep her safe from the evils of the world. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley and Harper 360 for the advanced copy. Opinions expressed are my own. This book is set for publication on July 3, 2023. #netgalley #arc #bookstagram #andienewton #achildforthereich #harper360

A mother's love knows no bounds. Anna retreated to the country to live as quietly as possible during the war. With her mother, sister, and children, as their spouses are in the resistance movement, they cultivate the land together. Although Anna was a famous actress in Prague before the war and her sister lived a luxurious life, somehow they endure the hard times.  Until the notorious Brown sisters appear in their village and start to kidnap "Aryan" children. Ema, Anna's daughter, is also kidnapped, and Anna makes the decision to do everything it takes to locate her. Thus she ends up in the middle of Germany, pretending to be a nurse and preparing to flee with Emma. This is a story full of warmth, understanding, and compassion for both kidnapped children and their parents.  The book portrays the atrocities of war and the Nazis, who had little respect for humanity in their quest to create a brand-new world order. The characters are strong-willed, courageous, and incredibly sympathetic. As even the wrong word can result in death, the book is packed with action and suspenseful situations. An excellent book that I highly recommend.   #aChildfortheReich  #AndieNewton  #historicalfiction  #onemorechapter #bookstagram #review #books #avidreader

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I couldn’t put this WWII historical fiction book down! This book tells the story of a family affected by the German Arayan program where women called Brown Sisters would kidnap Arayan looking children to be raised by German families. It also mentions the Lebensborn Program which was about producing an Arayan race for Germany. I loved Anna’s determination to get her daughter back. She flirted with danger every day she was in enemy territory which made the story exciting because you never knew what would happen next or if she would be caught. I liked that she had a few Allies to gave her hope. The story was a little heartbreaking, but so inspiring. It has a great ending! 📙📙BOOK REVIEW 📙📙 📚📚Rachel’s Random Resources 📚📚 A Child of the Reich By Andie Newton This is a fictional story based on actual events which occurred during WWII in Germany. It is a story about the Nazi Party’s Lebensborn programme whereby they stole thousands of Aryan looking children from occupied countries and then used them to repopulate their idea of the master race. The story revolves around Anna, Dasa and Matka, a mother and two daughters living in a town in the occupied territory of Czechoslovakia. Brilliantly researched and written this was an addictive and well paced read. Briefly, with both of their husbands away fighting with the Czech Resistance the families are living on the poverty line. One day the German Brown Sisters kidnap Anna’s 5 year old daughter Ema and Dasa’s new baby boy Adam but Anna is determined to trace both children; the story follows her desperate search through to a nursery in Dresden. This is a strongly emotional tale where on the one hand you witness the brutality of the German forces and collaborators whilst realising that not all Germans were Nazi sympathisers. The depiction of the nursery/orphanage is heartbreaking. How could adults can treat babies and young children like this. A very disturbing story of our time but excellently told. A very good historical novel highlighting one of the many atrocities carried out by the Nazi’s during the war. #bookreview #BookTour #achildforthereich #andienewton #rachelsrandomresources #onemorechapter #harper360uk #lyndasbookreviews #booksofinstagram #booklove #bookshelf #igreads #reader #bookblogger #instabooks #novel #booklovers #goodreads #libri #fiction #livre #currentlyreading #readersofinstagram

***A Child For The Reich*** by Andie Newton Anna's husband is away fighting with the Czech resistance and Anna is left at home with her daughter, sister and mother next door. When Anna's daughter is taken from her in her stall at the market by the Brown Sisters, who take young blond hair, blue eyed aryan children and spirit them away to special "homes" where they mold them into perfect German citizens, Anna is determined to do everything in her power to get her child back. Even if it means sacrificing herself in order to do so. Anna goes undercover posing as a cleaning woman, gaining employment in the house where her daughter is being held. She plans to snatch her child back right from under the Nazis' noses. This story is based loosely on true events that occured during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during WWII. This was a compelling, heart-rending story about the lengths a mother will go to protect her child, and the depth and endurance of a mother's love. It is a well written, dramatic tale about a little known part of WWII history. I was captured from the beginning and turned the pages well into the night trying to discover if Anna would be successful. I will let you readers out there find out for yourselves. I recommend this for fans of WWII historical fiction and give it 4 stars. It isn't the best I have read, but it is well above the worse. The lengths these women had to go to survive were amazing and horrifying. As I read more books like A Child for the Reich, I learn more and more about the atrocities carried out by the Nazis and in this The Third Reich. Anna devises a plan to get her daughter back from the German nurses before they can adopt her out. It’s a heartbreaking story. It’s a part of the war I wasn’t aware of. It’s available now in ebook form. @andienewtonauthor @onemorechapterhc @rachelsrandomresources #AChildForTheReich #ww2books #netgalleyreviewer

Happy Book Birthday! 🎉 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿 A Child for the Reich By Andie Newton Historical Fiction Available Now! 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿 🌿Synopsis in comments 🌿My Thoughts A Child for the Reich kept me turning the pages with a compelling, passionate story. I’ve read all of Andie’s books so far, and once again, did not disappoint! Anna has done everything she can to keep her daughter and her sister’s children out of the hands of the Brown Sisters, who take Czech children who “look German” from their families and place them with German parents. Sadly, her daughter is taken while they are at the market. Anna goes on a journey to rescue her daughter. Anna shows throughout the book the true love she has for her daughter and her sister’s children. She will clearly go to the end of the earth and back for them. And while there are some heart-shattering moments, there is a strong feeling of hope and determination throughout. I recommend this book for historical fiction lovers who enjoy WWII-era perspectives and books that are high-stakes yet hopeful. Thank you to @netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. The review expresses my own personal opinion. #achildforthereich #andienewton #andienewtonachildforthereich #histfic #historicalfiction #wwii #bookreview #bookreviews #bookreviewer #netgalley #netgalleyreads #readersofinstagram

I received a digital copy of A Child for the Reich by Andie Newton from NetGalley and HarperCollins UK in exchange for an honest review. Children were stolen from Poland and other ethnic countries as part of the Lebensborn program and they estimate over 200,000 children were taken between 1939 to 1945. Any child with blond hair and blue eyes was a target and could possibly be Germanised, Ms. Newton narrative gives you a firsthand account of mother’s anguish when this happens to her daughter, the lengths she will go and the risks she will take to get her back. A heartbreaking and informative story about a terrible time history, four stars from me and it's due to be released on the 9th of December 2022. QOTD: Do you enjoy historical fiction? Do you have a favorite point in time to read about? I am an absolute sucker for a WW2 novel. I think it is my favorite place in history to read about and I always learn something new. When in school I wanted to learn the most about this war, mainly because it is just so appalling to me what happened to so many innocent people. The Nazis are on the lookout for Aryan looking children to give proper German homes. Finding many Aryan looking children in Czech and Poland, the brown sisters as they were called, would entice hildren from their mothers with candy. Once they were captured, they were taken to facilities and indoctrinated in the way of the Nazis. Anna has gone years avoiding the brown sisters but when they get their hands on her daughter she is besides herself with grief and worry. Anna is determined and looking Aryan herself, goes undercover as a German nurse where her daughter was taken. Anna does everything she can to ensure her daughter is safe, but will it be enough to reunite them? Just wow, this book was amazing and it taught me something new. After I finished I spent all afternoon learning more about the taking of Czech children. The authors writing style was amazing and I was hooked from the beginning. I didn’t want to put this one down and was annoyed when something else needed my attention. At first I found the 400 pages daunting as it’s a little long for me, but now that I’m done I feel that this author could have continued on for way longer. I gave this one 5 out of 5 stars, and I’m sure I’ll be thinking about it for a long time. As always I’d like to extend my thanks to @netgalley and the publisher, Harper Collins UK - @onemorechapterhc, for an advanced e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book comes out early December (Dec 9th) so make sure to add this to your list if you’re looking for a heart wrenching holiday read. This was my 24th @netgalley book in @trishtalksbooks #tackleyourtbr challenge for the month of September.
