Sometimes I see clients, trainers or dietitians stuck in the traditional dieting wisdom of calorie counting. We have enough knowledge now to understand that our bodies are not like cars, and they will not burn the amount of energy taken in based on a specific equation and number of miles per hour. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying exercise and being active is wrong! I am saying, assuming that running for 20 minutes just removed the 200 calorie sugary drink is incorrect, or swapping a salad bowl lunch for a sugary ice-cream considering that they have the same amount of calories is a total misconception. Some foods, sugar, processed etc.. are by their nature inflammatory. By this they affect your body more than just in their calorie count but by slowing your metabolism, creating inflammation and affecting your gut, hence your digestion and mood. Now we know that when we change the quality of our food, we can eat as much as we want, reasonably, and see how our body processes them better. What reasons have you heard from Christians for not caring about healthy eating? I recently overheard a conversation where a guy was telling my pastor how silly it seemed to care about health foods because God is protecting our bodies. This guy is a personal trainer and works out a lot. He does a lot of good things helping people in my church with rehabilitating from physical injuries. But I thought, 'Why work out then? Isn't God keeping us strong and in shape?' It's been curious to me to see a close extended family where the only family member not making certain, good health choices along with the others was the devoted Christian, while her children struggled the most with health issues- seemingly because she believed in simply relying on God for self-control to eat less, not realizing that the "conventional", non-"fad" approach of calorie restriction... is itself a fad that supports the consumption of fake, processed foods! This may surprise you,🤯but calories don’t matter nearly as much as you think. Diet culture makes us think calories are everything. That to be healthy you need to count calories and be sure to never go over your caloric needs. That to lose weight it’s just “calories in, calories out.” But calories are not everything.🙅🏼‍♀️ Remember in my other post how I said calories are measurements of energy? That’s all they are. Nothing else. And measuring energy amount and usage isn’t always exact. Your body is not a machine. You’re a human being, and your body is different from everyone else’s. It processes food and energy different, for various reasons. If you’ve ever tracked your calories, you know that dreadful feeling when you’ve gone over your calorie needs for the day. Or that proud feeling when your workout burned 500 calories. But did you know that those numbers aren’t always accurate? You may be eating and burning more or fewer calories than your apps show.🤯 Why? Because you’re human! Here’s 5 reasons why calories don’t matter as much as you think: 1️⃣ Your digestive tract may not even absorb or use all the calories in a food. Your sandwich may have 450 calories and your side of broccoli 30 calories but the composition of those foods (including the amount of fiber), your daily activities, your stress level, current health, and more, can influence how much of those calories your body actually takes in. 2️⃣ Calories=energy, but not how full a food will keep you. Fullness is more dependent on fiber, protein, and fat content of the food, how fast you ate, how much you enjoyed your food, and your emotional well-being. A 300 calorie smoothie may keep you full for 45 minutes. Switched things up some with going very high fat and moderate protein to see how my body would react. I also mentally made the shift to allow more calories. I was stuck in the mindset of still watching my calories because my body has always been so slow to lose weight, I was nervous to eat too much. It’s as if I turned on the switch and my body is dropping weight faster than it ever has. Really happy with the results of eating over 3000 calories and higher fat. I’m still exercising (rowing and strength training). Always learning…N=1

🍽 PROTOCOLLO del GIORNO: ADF🍽 Dopo non so quante ore di digiuno (non mi ricordo mai di far partire la app!) ecco cos'ho mangiato in questo mio refeed di terzo ciclo di digiuno alternato. 🍽️h 14 - Spezzato dopo pranzo con: > 2 caffè macchiati senza zucchero 🍽️h 18 - Fatto un breve aperitivo con: > cornetto salato con petto di pollo arrosto > 50 grammi di parmigiano 🍽️h 20:30 - Cena con pasto principale con: > 3/4 polpette di parmigiano, albumi e pancetta > due belle porzioni di merluzzo alla marinara > insalata di finocchi, semi misti e tonno > una fetta di tortina al cioccolato Il merluzzo alla marinara una bomba! Adoro queste ricette veloci, gustose e dall'adeguato apporto un pò ipocalorico. Totale calorico 1850 circa, che suddiviso sulle due giornate di ADF significa 925 Kcal/giorno. Deficit calorico pari a 810 Kcal sui due giorni (= 405 Kcal in meno al giorno). As you’re probably aware the UK government have decided that calories on menus is mandatory in all restaurants and cafes with more than 250 employees. Supposedly, this will allow people to make ‘healthier’ choices however I couldn’t disagree more. I feel this is going to impact those who have a difficult relationship with food negatively as well as, increase the percentage of people who struggle with eating disorders massively. Okay yes, obesity kills but so do eating disorders. I hope this post can help those of you who are going to find these changes difficult/ help to remind you that your body IS NOT A calculator and what you eat does not define you!! Let's talk about choices. This food is a great choice. Simple ingredients. 100% Grass-Fed Bison, 100% Grass-fed Beef, Sea Salt, Organic Coriander, Organic Black Pepper, Organic Shiitake Mushroom Powder, Organic Red Pepper, Organic Sage, Organic Thyme, Organic Parsley Flakes I did not however need to eat the whole roll. I just consumed 1400calories of ordinary meat, 1400calories of all the same nutrients. I don't care about the calories really no. This will likely fill me for the day and I could fast till tomorrow. However we need to prioritize food based on what nutrients it has to fuel the body. Variety of nutrients is key. How much more nutrients could I have gotten in one meal had I had one or 2 servings of sausage versus 7. (Who decides these serving sizes 🤣) and some Wild Salmon, an egg and my usual side of braunschweiger. The latter is the better choice of course. 🤷 Food for thought. Eat to fuel your body not just satiate it. Our ancestors prioritized nutrients and so should we. #putthehumanbackinnature This is why I don't promote Keto or Paleo cheat foods on the regular. It should be on occasion because it takes the place of healing medicinal foods and nutrients. Even health coaches are human. The best ones in my opinion show the whole story and not just the highlight reel. BTW I also ate some amazing Quesabirria tacos this week and they were amazing.(corn tortilla) I didn't die 😉

Calories v Carbs counting Some dietary guidelines recommend between 2200 - 2800 calories per day for men and 1800 - 2600 calories per day for women. For some authors these numbers are too high. To me as a doctor it doesn’t add up to much anyway. If you like to count calories then you will end up knowing that gram to gram carbs and proteins have less calories when compared to fats….so you end up eating more carbs to make up the numbers of recommended calories. What it does to glucose and insulin is not discussed. On the other hand low carbs diet will eventually have higher fat which makes your stomach and brain feel satisfied for longer time. Many authorities recommend 130 gram of fat for health but to reverse diabetes this number should go down to about 30-40 grams / day if the goal is to reverse diabetes. Jus to get your attention - one slice of bread can be about 20 grams of carbs. 🍽 5:2 🍽 Dopo quasi 50 ore di digiuno ho riaperto la finestra direttamente con il pasto principale: ➡️ piatto di brodo vegetale e basta ➡️ Doppia dose di stracciatella in brodo con tanto pepe ➡️ Carne in scatola con olio e limone ➡️ panna fresca montata e scaglie di fondente 100% ➡️ Mezzo pancake vuoto (solo latte, farina e uova) avanzato dalla figlia grande! 😓So bene che la carne in scatola è quanto di peggio si possa consigliare, ma non nascondo che a volte mi avvalgo di questi alimenti salvatempo e salvadieta per sopperire ad una mancata organizzazione dei pasti quando la giornata incalza sempre più. 🍽 5:2 🍽 Dopo 46 ore di digiuno riapro la finestra con: ➡️ una manciata di arachidi Mentre preparo da mangiare stuzzico un po' con: ➡️ Prosciutto crudo E poi ecco il pasto principale: ➡️ due fette di pane proteico,in una ho messo del prosciutto cotto avanzato dalle bimbe che stava per finire e in un'altra del formaggio spalmabile alle olive ➡️ Una crepe ripiena di crudo ➡️ Mix di verdure al forno (broccoletti, peperoni e porri) con pancetta e mozzarella ➡️ Mezza crepe alla Nutella... letteralmente due morsi ➡️ Uno yogurt Tutto innaffiato da una buona birra rossa per un totale di calorie di quasi 2000... #notbad!! E oggi secondo giorno di fasting della settimana per questo riscoperto protocollo 5:2 che è molto piacevole. Sappiate mangiare bene esattamente come quando digiunate perché non c'è un nessun buon fast se non c'è un ottimo feast! VEGETARIAN NOW FOR 6 MONTH. What started off as a trial is actually going quite smooth. A big part of the reason is I love eating and don’t mind eating the same food every day. Literally every day. I don’t count calories because I know how much the portion size is and if I need to make any changes I can just alter the portion. CALORIES ARE MAN MADE. And if you actually look into it they have a kind of their own. 🔺They behave different for everybody 🔺every app and every nutritionist has its own version of calories 🔺every food is different (where it’s grown, what soil, what temp, what pesticides etc..) Learn to know your food by how it makes you feel and the results you see over a period of 7-10days. Serve your food and eat it with awareness. . When my Mom used to bake, I’d always hang out in the kitchen with her. She knew I was waiting to lick the batter off the spoon, and getting to do it before my brother showed up made me feel like my Mom and I had a special connection. She would dance in the kitchen, pointing her finger in the air while moving her hips side to side, as I sat there, embarrassed, commenting on her chicken legs. When I was 14 I stopped hanging out with her in the kitchen. We stopped sharing those moments and making those memories that I still hold on to, so many years later. Licking the batter, or eating her treats afterward, meant consuming calories that I couldn’t afford to consume if I wanted to be thin. And at that time, I was obsessed with the number on the scale. What I wouldn’t give to have those moments back, so I could choose happiness and memories over fear of weight gain. I was a teenager. But now, as a grown adult, I have many, many clients who are also grown women, and they are STILL missing out on such moments because they have been taught to fear calories. And sometimes that trumps everything else, even connection. One of my favourite things about the 12 week program I run is the transformations I witness from women who have missed out on life because of body shame and food anxiety. From missing moments to enjoying life AND feeling confident in her body. That is freedom. Healing from body and food dysfunction is why I created the program, because I know what it is like to feel trapped in a perpetual cycle of fear, shame and guilt. The first step is some mental shifts and deep inner work to change what we believe about food and who we are (side note: I have a degree in Psychology and am obsessed with diving in to the psychology of disordered eating. It has to start here). If this resonates with you, I am running my 12 week program again February 14th (the day of love - loving YOU!) Doors for registration open Monday. I cannot wait for more women to just lick the spoon again. ❤️

Calories•Doesn’t matter✨ For now my main goal is to rebuild my relationship with food. That’s not going get my dropping lbs but what is will do is help my with my BED which is my priority right now. When I mention the word Diet or think diet my whole body craves the foods I don’t really want and I definitely don’t need but my mind tells me you can’t have it so eat as much as you can. You can only have a little but you NEED it all. Eat until you cannot possibly eat anymore. Mindset is everything and getting myself in the right headspace making healthier choices. Who cares if I’m not in a calorie deficit. As long as im not overeating cake, chocolate and crisps that’s my first hurdle. I’m moving more and I’m eating better that’s my first small step to recovery. I need long term not quick fixes. I rarely talk about calories, but when I do, it’s usually to describe how unimportant they really are 🤷🏽‍♀️ Regardless of your health goals, calories should never dictate whether you choose a particular food to eat. When making food choices: First, ask yourself- am I hungry? Then, what foods am I craving right now? And finally, is this meal or snack going to fill me up physically as well as emotionally!? Calories are actually a measure of energy, so yes, we absolutely want our food to have calories. But the calories will only keep us full if they have the right combination of the following nutrients - PROTEIN, FAT & FIBER. So instead of checking the calorie content, check for foods that combine the right amounts of nutrients that will keep you satiated.
