I barely could get past the first part of this book. Horrific. But I made myself read it, if she - they six million - endured it I could read. This was one of the more graphic holocaust survival stories I’ve heard. Yet she and her sisters survived. The holocaust is just the beginning of the book, the rest of her story is a journey of life full of relatable experiences and meaningful lessons. ✨Book Review ✨ Powerful - Lauren Robert’s This is the novella that is part of the Powerless series. In the first book Adena plays a minor role and we don’t get to know too much about her. I am so glad we now get a story about her life because she is just the epitome of sunshine. Her story is so endearing and you can’t help but smile at her dialogue. We also get introduced to a new character Makoto who is the definition of grumpy. Adena and Makoto story is heartbreaking and I’m so sad for them that they never got a chance for it to really become something more than what it was. I feel that Mak’s story isn’t finished and I hope that he has a main character role in the next book. At the end of Powerful there is a sneak peak into the next book Reckless however I restrained from reading it because I want to read it all in one go. If I can say one thing is read this book!!!! Powerful by Lauren Roberts 5/5🌟 This book hurt my soul but I loved every word of it. The epitome of grumpy x sunshine, Adena and Mak have my heart. This was also the first book I used tabs while reading and they had so many sweet moments I was gushing over that I got to flag. I loved having a new perspective of the events that happened in book one and now I’m even more hyped for book two to come out! I think the tiny book is very cute even though it doesn’t match on the shelf. Maybe once all 5 of the series are out we can think of creative ways to display them. Have you read Powerful yet??

Powerful review 🪡 🌱🪡 🌱 3 ★ I was a little scared to read this after knowing what happened in Powerless, but it was still interesting to get more insight on Adena’s character (albeit not much). Because this was a novella, things moved fast⸺ it was really fast paced, that’s the thing with novellas⸺ and I never really had the chance to process each scene that took place. Yes, what happened in the end was sad and compared to Powerless, this did make more of an impact on me, but still not much (I felt more for Mak than Adena, honestly). I understand this not being a full-length novel because Adena is a side character, but with this type of ending I felt it should be a full-length novel. With the novella’s pacing moving so fast, I wasn’t able to fully understand or process either of the MC’s motivations. We didn’t know what Adena’s end goal was, or even in Powerless, it felt like what happened to her was only there for the shock value. Her character development might as well be non-existent, she stayed the same throughout the novella (and in Powerless too, that would’ve been because she was barely present in the story). This made Adena’s fate feel meaningless, and I just didn’t feel as much for her as I probably should’ve. Mak on the other hand, was better in terms of character and I did care more about his character than Adena’s. We were told his backstory and we were shown how certain deaths affected him. We saw how closed off he was from the beginning before he met Adena, how he eventually opened up to her about his past and fell for her. Even though the novella was fast-paced, I got more out of Mak’s character than I did of Adena’s. Yes we got to see how Adena and Mak eventually fall in love, but that’s like the only thing from her character arc? There just wasn’t enough for me to feel invested in her character. In terms of enjoyment, yes, I did enjoy this novella. Even though I knew what was coming, I did enjoy Adena and Mak’s interactions, and the romance. I’ll try to avoid spoilers but READ IT SO WE CAN DISCUSS IT, PLEASE! Knowing the ending of Powerless, I was hesitant to take a trip back in time for Adena’s story. Only because I knew it was going to be an emotional roller coaster. I was correct. In the best and worst of ways. @laurenrobertslibrary what have you done to me? I was flipping pages like my life depended on it. I was irrationally hoping for a surprise ending, something to undo what happened in Powerless. But it didn’t come. I do NOT regret one minute of this tale of Mak and Adena, however. This is her story, and it was amazing. I loved seeing the story from Powerless, but in a whole different perspective. I loved her bubbly attitude and her growing relationship with Mak. I loved their back and forth banter. I loved the glimpses of Paedyn and Kai. This book gripped me from the start and left me in tears at the end. Definitely, any fan of Powerless, read this book! I was literally guessing the whole time and the twists and turns simply exhausted my brain. What a beautiful YA book about racism, terrorism, xenophobia, scapegoating and Islamophobia. This has been a week!! A few things have happened that have left us stunned and we’re experiencing some conflicting emotions. But as a dear friend said to me yesterday “Jesus is faithful. He is always faithful.” Amen! In the midst of this wacky week, though, I read the most wonderful book!! Serena by Ron Rash has been in my sights for a very long time now. I used the #tbr24in24 challenge as a means to finally read this book. There is so much here! The theme of hunting and being hunted was brilliantly portrayed throughout the story in so many different ways. How Rash used the lumber crew as a Greek chorus was fascinating to me! This story was disturbing on a few levels but it kept me turning the pages and was a bit disappointed when I reached the end. Have you read Serena? If so, what was your take on it? I can see this being a polarizing book.
