#fantasyfriday 📚Book Review📚 🧜‍♀️🦭 I love reading books based around mythology. Especially when it revolves lesser known creatures. Enter “ These Shallow Waters” and its Irish Selkie stars. Lore around these creatures has always intrigued me so I was excited to receive an arc of these books featuring them. This was a great debut effort, whose dark underlying themes had me captivated. It had a unique concept and likeable characters. Ellie despite the loss in her life retains a quirky personality and tries to find a positive outlook on life. Displaying an enviable inner strength. Also, how can you not love a book obsessed MC. And Lawson was a perfect grumpy love interest with a soft center, in an only her way. It was a little too much insta love for me, but I got over it quick as I loved the two together. Chock full of drama, mystery and intrigue I was hooked from the first pages. The ending cliff hanger was predictable and I called it early on . That said it’s not preventing me from wanting to dive into book two when it comes out. Happy Thursday! My reading has been kinda all over the place lately, meaning I haven’t really stuck to the (loose) TBR I plan out every month. I’m reading a bunch more on my kindle (rip to my physical TBR that’s overflowing lol)…. So I thought I would share a kindle reading update! The Fine Print by Lauren Asher Thank you @indiespinesbookclub for choosing this for April and for the giveaway win! The first in a billionaire brothers romance series, Rowan Kane is looking to take over and renovate his late grandfather's theme park, Dreamland. He hires Zahra as a Creator, but can't deny his attraction to her. He kisses her, then texts her using an alias and things get out of hand. He believes people like him don't get happy endings, but he can't stay away. I'm not usually into billionaires, but I enjoyed this one. I started reading the print but switched to audio because Aiden Snow's voice is 🥵. Rowan is the king of grumps, and can even be rude. But Zahra doesn't take his shit and sasses him back. I loved their banter! When we find out why he has such an attitude, it made sense and I felt for him. The spice 🌶 was hot too! I also loved that he became close with Zahra's sister, Ani, who has Down Syndrome. Their relationships (Zahra and Ani, and Rown and Ani) were so heartwarming. I found it a little too long (although idk what could be cut). I remember reading and being like how tf am I only at 50%?! Also Rowan's possessiveness turned me off. But I did enjoy it overall and I'll probably continue the series at some point! ❓️Would you accept an offer for your dream job if it meant working for a rude and difficult boss? I listened to this book on @audible and it was amazing! I believe it took about 2.5 or 3 hours to finish listening to it at 2.0x speed. ✨ Synopsis✨ Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Book review time! The Cult of Tuphrak, by @authorsjprendergast ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a slower, more character-driven tale than Sword of Digez’s action-packed battle, but it show’s Prendergast’s versatility to pull off a different kind of story. One of our two main outworlders is stabbed and his fate is rather touch-and-go. There were times early in the tale I had my doubts the rest of the cast could carry the tale without his wit, but the expanded role of Kashgarli and introduction of the healer Debalauchy (not debauchery) helped fill the wisdom void. Descriptions and languages are Tolkien-esque, in a good way. However, one disappointment was not having any hint what the horrible sight in the Cult’s hideout was. Leaving horror to the imagination can work wonders, but a little hint on the direction the brain should take would’ve upped this factor. Ah, and then came the Khalik, Zhir’s elf equivalent. It’s nice to see elves not entirely virtuous and perfect. I adore Arlayna and her outspokenness. And at the end of it, this is a love story, too. It leaves on a cliffhanger and i cannot wait for the next one! To say this book had me in a chokehold is an understatement, I flew through it and it’s so exciting cause the author could do so much with this premise. I absolutely loved the first book, and was so excited to get back into this story and see more from Hayden and her guys. I absolutely devoured this book, finishing it in less than a day – I couldn’t get enough. This book is the second installment in the Dragons of Ember Hollow series, and it picks up right where Twilight of Embers left off. I don’t want to give away too much plot that could spoil Twilight of Embers if you haven’t read it yet, so I’ll just say that there is a lot to unpack emotionally in this book as Hayden starts to process all she’s learned about the men that she’s found herself connected to and herself. I absolutely loved the character development in Midnight of Ashes. It really felt like the author allowed the characters some time to process who they are, and what they’ve been through as they learn to trust the connection between them. I always appreciate strong character development, and I loved the multiple POVs that allowed you further understand what each character was going through. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who is looking for something that is fun, exciting, unique and not super long. At less than 300 pages each, this series is an easy one to pick up and get immersed in. I didn't put anything for Reformatory because honestly that book wasn't for me (historical fiction, slow pacing, ghosts....) but it was still well written and clearly a book that lot of work went into and I didn't feel like I had an appropriate sticker for it🤷🏻‍♀️ A Dark and Rising Tide by Debra Castaneda probably should have been included in the flawless team because it was fantastic. A Fire so Wild by Sarah Ruiz Grossman also wouldn't have been out of place in the top. In the Garden of Echo by H.S. I Loved this book as much as I expected to, which was a lot. The characters were great and consistent. I really enjoy books where the setting is almost a character of its own and it was the case here through the forum and descriptions. There's a certain humor laced through the story but it never gets to a point where we lose the sense of stake or tension. It's no secret that I love body horror that doesn't rely on torture but on the body being changed by non-human forces and we get a solid serving of that with this one. It got seriously uncomfortable at some points. And to top it all off the ending was such an absolute gut punch. We Met In The Forums by Rob Ulitski gets my upvote! I was once again fortunate enough to read an ARC of the upcoming release from @thingsthatkeepmeupatnight and again, I was not disappointed. With In the Darkness, Eyes and Teeth, he asks us, “What price would you pay for a second chance with your favorite pet?”, and as always, he more than satisfactorily answers. Dimaro’s latest story is a fun, fast paced, vicious little thing. Nothing extra is given (or needed); it’s all straight story, just thing after thing after thing until…holy shit. Do yourself a favor and pre-order a copy. You’ll want to read this one as soon as it’s out in the world.

Once Bad Intentions by Monique Campbell Thank you @reedsy.discovery for my copy! In 1990s London, Stephanie Johnson goes through her realistic coming of age journey. From age 12 to 19, we join her on her challenging & dangerous adventures through adolescence & into adulthood. She was raised in a violent home, with a father who physically abused her mother, & a mother who perpetuates the abuse to Stephanie & her siblings. Knowing no other options, Stephanie also becomes violent, fighting in school, joining a girl gang, & becoming a criminal. With so much anger inside her, she saw no other outlet for her frustration because as we know, hurt people hurt people. Stephanie's personal diary is her only positive expressive outlet & her solace. She writes her life & her feelings here, & we get pieces of it throughout the story. At times I wanted to reach through the pages & talk some sense into this fiery girl, but as time progresses, it becomes easier to cheer her on, as we are gifted with watching her grow & mature into a young woman, struggling to make better choices as she learns how to do introspective & reflective work. I was delighted to see her evolve & while gaining more empathy for others. I also enjoyed the many music references, as I can recall music being an integral part of my own life as a teen as well. Many songs were mentioned during important scenes, & I wonder how it would impact readers to listen to them while consuming those scenes at the same time. What was difficult for me was the pacing & time lapses. Sometimes a wild thing happens that needs urgent attention, or Stephanie's behavior has her facing major consequences, but we don't get to see those consequences play out on page. Instead the story has jumped ahead a year or two & the scene we just read about is being described to us in her diary in the past & simply states what occurred after, leaving me a bit underwhelmed & disconnected from the story. I would have liked to see those conclusions on page. Once Bad Intentions will appeal to readers who enjoy redemption stories & second chances. The void, in my case, being my reps/senators' inboxes and voicemails... 🕳 But connecting with people who get it {especially on bookstagram} helps. There's something about chatting with people who can hold both the sheer joy and freedom that books/art give us AND the deep pain and horror happening out in the world... You give me hope in humanity. It also feels extra comforting to find books that can hold the full joy <> horror spectrum too. And although the book pictured here doesn't address the g3n0cydes in G@za / Sud4n / the C0ng0 / etc; it covers other hard topics like (⚠ CW) CSA, depression, bullying, and suicidal thoughts. It shows humans fighting their own, horrifying internal battles and winning. If you've been feeling a little invisible lately (whether it's because you're calling out a humanitarian crisis the greater powers are ignoring or because you're fighting your own battles at home), you're not alone. 📖Book Review✨ The Trap by N.J. Weeks Happy Release Day!!🎉🎉🎉 I finished this yesterday and I absolutely devoured this one! I was obsessed with Raiden and Colson like four chapters in. They are so hot 🥵 the banter, the tension, it’s stressful in the best possible way 🫠 I love N.J.’s dark romances because while they are dark, and they are dark, they are also so much fun and comforting. Like all her “couples” I absolutely adore these two. I love their story and how it all comes to light, and the schmexy situation they find themselves in is crazy and hilarious at the same time. I highly recommend reading at least Skulls and Stitches first just to get the full effect of the side characters and maybe also The Trick because really it makes it so much more fun knowing their stories too 😝 It’s dark, it’s spicy, it’s funny, it’s A+ banter, it’s an all around good time! Obviously check trigger warnings first, I have no triggers so I am a terrible judge of those things!
