How it Unfolds was a surprising science fiction romance unexpectedly. It's one of those that aren't romantic til you finish it and realize how it connects and for that I am thankful because it kept me guessing. It isn't a long read, but the concept is to scan consenting people (scientists?) and then bean them to new locations across space to restart a human colony. So the crew scanned at normal earth would be copied and reassembled (unfolded) at the other side potentially millions of light years away. This was done many times. Not all places support human lives and not all unfolds were successful. The story is largely about the ones that succeed and how. I really liked this story and would 💯 recommend it! Caliban's War by James S.A. Corey (book review) Rating- 5 out of 5 Magnificent is the only word I can use to describe this book. I've been a fan of "The Expanse" TV series since it first released but am only reading the books now. "Leviathan Wakes" was good "Caliban's War" was better in every way imaginable. The Rocinante crew return with James Holden as their captain dealing with the fallout of the previous book. The story follows four main characters (Holden, Avasarala, Bobbie and Prax) as they deal with politics (on a galactic scale), war and a dad seeking his missing daughter. Each character's story is threaded to the climatic space battle that is breathtaking in set and execution. I love Sci-fi, so this story is the type of story I love; big and, at times, complex. The complexity never gives way to confusing chaos. The story always stays straightforward without too many unnecessary rabbit holes. This fact is made even more incredible when you consider it is two people telling this story. I'll be taking a brief break but will get into book 3 soon. If the rest of the series is close to this book, then it will be an accomplishment. Favourite Holden quote- "I'm sorry. No tea drinkers on the crew. Lots of coffee, though, if you'd like a cup." (Pg461) Goodreads Synopsis- We are not alone. On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. ☄️ Book Review: Caliban's War-James S. A. Corey ☄️ This is a very well built book #2 in my opinion and I am obssessed! 🤩 Majority of the time, after reading book #2, that is when I decide if I will continue working through the series or not. The characters that have carried on through to this book are going strong. None of their relationships and stories are boring, they actually made this book more enjoyable because of the familiar feelings you have from book #1. We are introduced to new characters (of course 🤫😉) that are as striking, complicated and interesting as the others. The dynamic between the two "groups" is umph! 🤌 I will stay away from the actual story line as I DO NOT trust myself talking about it without blurting out spoilers.... There were too many "oooh" and "aaaah" moments..... Overall, I really enjoyed Caliban's War and really look forward to jump on to book #3. I've been reading James SA Corey's Expanse series after my interest in the Amazon show. I bought the aniversary cover of Leviathan Wakes but found it really hard to get through as a physical book. I really would've struggled had I not seen the show. However, I loved listening to Caliban's War as an audiobook and it made it so much easier to digest. I've also listened to the novella Drive as audio but I kind of wished I physically read that one as it is pretty tense. ABADDON'S GATE ☄️🚀 by JAMES SA COREY ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ -yep, still my favorite sci-fi novel. I will be so real with you, my love for book 3 of The Expanse is entangled with my love for season 3 of the show. they have their differences, but they're alike in my heart. bad reviews of this one are pretty funny, & mostly claim that it was boring. I had the time of my fckin life, twice. -the found family is really familying -so many neurology references 🧪⚡ -so many protomolecule discoveries -are the aliens scary, or are the humans? -the authors call Abaddon's Gate the haunted house story -it's also a disaster recovery thriller lolll of course my public health professional 🍑 loves it -the least reliable narrator is the most reliable narrator -the ethical dilemmas are really pulling their weight, I literally agreed with the delulu bad guys personally I really think enjoyment of this book will come down to whether you enjoy intolerable characters. the new supporting cast were either genuinely terrible violent people, or boring & righteous, or both. Questa serie ha in sé quegli elementi particolari che mi fanno innamorare di una storia (fantasia, profonda empatia, personaggi vividi e reali), e li ho ritrovati qui, in questi racconti che espandono la vicenda principale. Alla fine di nove libri, dopo aver viaggiato per il cosmo al fianco della ciurma della Rocinante, è stato bello trovare consolazione alla mia nostalgia in queste otto storie. Ognuna è una piccola perla che va ad impreziosire quelle parti della storia di “The Expanse” che sono rimaste meno esplorate. Per i fan, è una gioia: ci possiamo concedere di tornare per un po’ in questo mondo che amiamo, e passare altro tempo con alcuni fra i personaggi più intriganti della serie. Ma ha senso leggere questa raccolta se non si sono letti i libri precedenti? Relativamente. Alcuni racconti hanno bisogno di più contesto (“Auberon” o “Strani Cani”), ma per la maggior parte funzionano come piccole storie a sé stanti, con archi narrativi propri che soddisfano il lettore. Per dirne uno, non c’è bisogno di nessun riferimento per godere della grandezza assoluta di “Il Macellaio della Stazione di Anderson”. Da evitare se: Se non amate la fantascienza, o i racconti brevi.
What This Week 😊 This week just flew by 😅 I had a pretty intense week at work, but I still managed to have some time for fun stuff. 📚 Read: I made some progress with Cibola Burn by James SA Corey, the fourth book in The Expanse. These books are huge, and so much happening plotwise, so it always takes me forever to get through them, but I'm having a really good time with it 😊 I also read about 100 pages of The Principle of Moment by Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson. It's sort of a mix of space opera, time travel and Regency romance, and it's a little confusing so far, but I'm interested in seeing where it's going 😊 🎬 Watched: apart from continuing my Star Trek TNG rewatch, I also watched Rebel Moon: The Scargiver. This was somehow even worse than the first one: horrible dialogue, absolutely no plot, it's basically 2 hours of fighting on a farm. It looks cool I guess, but that's about it 🤷🏻♀️ Go watch Dune instead, or literally any Star Wars movie, you'll have a much better time. 🎧 Listened to: I don't listen to a lot of podcasts, but when I do it's almost always something related to movies and tv shows. Jest jak taki napakowany koks z siłowni, który na pierwszy rzut oka wygląda na mocarza, ale jak przyjdzie co do czego, to okazuje się, że te wszystkie napompowane mięśnie nijak się mają do jego prawdziwej siły. Owszem, dalej walka jest przyjemna i na wysokim poziomie, ale czuć bardzo duży niedosyt. #ProchyBabilonu to książka poprawna w której bardzo dużo się dzieje, ale tak na prawdę jest ona raczej wprowadzenim do następnej części przez co nie czułem zbytniego przywiązania do tego co się w niej dzieje. Wszystko jest w niej bardzo dobre, historia, bohaterowie, cały wątek Wolnej Floty ALE... jest ona po prostu za długa. Całą historię z tej książki można by skondensować do jednego dłuższego opowiadania i na to samo by wyszło. Książka ta jest zdecydowanie inna niż poprzedni tom, ale dalej znakomita. Przepełniona jest akcją i zdarzeniami znaczącymi dla świata przedstawionego, których kulminacji doświadczymy prawdopodobnie dopiero w następnym tomie. Dla mnie jednak motywem przewodnim tej części są bohaterowie. W końcu dowiadujemy się nieco więcej o ich przeszłości, a sam tylko wątek Amosa nadawał by się na oddzielną książkę. Tak na prawdę dopiero teraz poczułem zaletę prowadzenia narracji w sposób skokowy, czyli od postaci do postaci. Wcześniej delikatnie mnie to irytowało, ale na tym etapie przygody w końcu przestałem zwracać na to uwagę. Świat przedstawiony dalej wciąga niesamowicie, wprost nie można się oderwać od czytania. Przeciwnika oczywiście polecam. Jest to kolejna fantastyczna przygoda, którą każdy fan #scifi po prostu musi przeżyć. Elvi Okoye lidera una misión científica con el objetivo de comprender a los constructores y qué fue lo que acabó con ellos. Aliana Tanaka emprende la búsqueda del desaparecido emperador Duarte. Y la tripulación de la Rocinante tratan de hallar un modo para que la especie siga existiendo más allá de los próximos sucesos. James S. A. Corey es el pseudónimo utilizado por Daniel Abraham (1969) y Ty Frank (1969) para escribir la saga The Expanse, una saga que ha tenido un gran éxito y ha dado la vuelta al mundo al contar con el apoyo de George R. R. Martin y ser nominada al Premio Hugo y al Premio Locus en 2012 con El Despertar del Leviatán. Y… a la novena, y última, va la vencida. Mejor tarde que nunca. La Caída del Leviatán es para mí el mejor libro de la saga y, exceptuando el pico de genialidad de Los Juegos de Némesis, con diferencia. Más allá de la espectacularidad “palomitera” que caracteriza la saga, este libro consigue un equilibrio perfecto entre todos sus elementos. Esta reflexión no la hago por el final que, aunque sorprendente en algunos aspectos, es previsible en otros. No, la reflexión la hago porque al fin le dan un carácter más amplio a los propios protagonistas, en especial a Naomi y a Holden, que dejan de ser estereotipos que viven el presente a personas que piensan en la huella que dejarán en el futuro. Y sí, como todos los demás libros de la saga, está repleto de escenas espectaculares y acción al más puro estilo de un blockbuster, pero… en esta ocasión consiguen entremezclar a la perfección todo eso con un carácter introspectivo que va mucho más allá. En conclusión; un final tremendo de una saga bastante irregular, pero que ha valido la pena llegar hasta aquí. ¿Habéis leído la novela? ¿Qué os parece mi reseña? All I can say is thank you. The support and encouragement I have received since my last post has left me feeling humbled and extremely grateful. I am feeling very seen and very loved. Every time she dives deeper into the specificity of her subjective lived experiences, I feel her lyrics resonate more deeply. Anyway, here’s my new TBR!!!! If you know me well, you’ll know I’m a mood reader, through and through. Only problem is, after I started dealing with chronic illness, my reading totally fell off. It’s kinda hard to keep a mood when you’re not feeling well for long stretches of time. I’m gonna keep this positive though. Like, I read all of Dune! this big, bucket list book that I had let intimidate me for years. I did that. And it was great! It also helped get me into Sci-Fi, which I can’t say I didn’t like—I did!—but I hadn’t developed a deep connection with the genre like I had with Fantasy and Horror. Until now anyway… I decided to shorten my TBR, be more intentional about what I’m reading. 🗓 WHAT THIS WEEK 🗓 ✨ Happy Saturday everyone! 😊 Thought I'd do a bit of a catch up with a #whatthisweek post today: 📖 What I've been reading - I'm currently about 150 pages in to Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep, which won the Hugo Award in 1993. It's certainly space opera on an epic and ambitious style so far, and I'm enjoying it. 🎧 What I've been listening to - I've started Cibola Burn on audiobook, which is book 4 in The Expanse series. So far, so good! I recently finished Heretics of Dune which I was wasn't wholly enamoured with and was glad I finally finished it, but I am going to complete the series with Chapterhouse soon. 📺 What I've been watching - I don't normally watch a lot of TV shows as prefer films, but I have recently finished Dark on Netflix. It was 3 series long but I flew through them all and cannot recommend it enough. Time travel, mystery, murder, family drama and romance all result in thrilling TV and the acting and writing is exceptional. I also went to see Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, it was fun and I enjoyed it but it wasn't quite as good as the last Ghostbusters movie. High Expectations There are a lot of reasons that I have incredibly high expectations of various books in my TBR. Sometimes it’s that the blurb sounds like it’ll be right up my alley, or maybe I’ve seen others rave about it, or perhaps the author has other books that’ve resonated with me. Whatever the reason, I try not to let it bias my reading experience when I actually pick up the book but sometimes it can’t be helped. One book that’s finally made it off this list is my current read Malice. I bought all four books of The Faithful and the Fallen series before starting because I was positive that they’d align with my specific taste in high fantasy series. I’m still in the “Wait who is this? King of where? What’s a torc?” phase that comes at the start of fantasy books but I’m really looking forward to getting more into it. ❓What books on your TBR do you have high expectations for?

Oh hi, friends! My hiatus lasted a couple weeks longer than I meant it to, but I’m back now. With changes! Number one, look! It’s my face! 😛 My feed is very neat and organized, which is one aspect of my personality, but another aspect is that I’m a cozy little homebody who wears the same ratty sweatshirt and Christmas pajama pants every minute I’m at home, no matter the hour. 🚀 Book Review 🚀 Cibola Burn – James S.A. Corey Carrying on through my read of The Expanse series the fourth book is Cibola Burn... This book finds all sides racing to claim territory through the mysterious gates that have opened to new worlds, each side believes they are the ones that can lay claim Illus, the first human colony, and put themselves ahead of the game. When this conflict leads to ships being blown up the tension between the colonists and the RCE reaches dangerous levels. In an attempt to calm the situation and find a solution, the crew of the Rocinante are sent as peacemakers. This one felt like a bit of a change of pace for the series, but it still maintains its high quality. The protagonist in this one, Adolphus Murtry is so single minded on his determination for the RCE to own everything that he’s one of the most dangerous Holden and the crew have faced so far, even if it does feel on a smaller scale. The new POV characters continue to add some new to the series, even if most of them are just one and done, they have to be well written to remain interesting for the period of the book. I feel like this is the book in the series in which you would become massively lost if you hadn’t read the previous books of the series as there is so much that calls back to what happened previously. Another great addition to the series...I’m looking forward to carrying on my adventures with the Rocinante crew and hopefully some characters that have been missing in the recent books. Since reading this, I’ve added two more of the collector addition hardbacks, I think they are amazing so just wanted to show them in the background. Synopsis in the comments! How many completed book series have you read? I was shocked when posing this question to myself in finding the answer is only 2. I supposed if I’m counting the original Mistborn trilogy (Era 1) as its own series, that would be 3. But the one I’m really proud of is The Expanse. I read the first book shortly after it was released and eventually 2 and 3 somewhere in the subsequent years. In 2022 when I started reading regularly again, I dove back into this wonderful sci-fi saga and finished it. Incredible cast of characters, fast paced stories, brimming with action and intrigue, I really cannot recommend it enough, whether you have watched the SyFy/Amazon adaptation or not. I absolutely can’t wait for James S.A. Corey’s next series to begin in late September, ‘The Mercy of Gods.’ I’m dropping everything else when that book releases.
Well. That's it, then. The last leg of this series didn't exactly go the way I thought it would. I hadn't anticipated leaving behind so many characters I loved, and hated, and had questions about. Conan 3 : 0 Książki Język 8/10 Fabuła 7/10 Bohaterowie 6/10 Immersja 7/10 Nie będę ukrywał, że przeciwnik mnie troszkę rozczarował. W porównaniu do poprzednich dwóch, widać lekką zadyszkę. W tomie tym dochodzi do prawdopodobnie jednego z najważniejszych wydarzeń świata przedstawionego ale jakoś tego nie czułem. Bohaterowie są jacy są, poza główną postacią, nie czuję jakiś większych emocji wcielając się w nich. Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, że jest to dalej doskonała przygoda i na drodze do kolejnych tomów, pozycja obowiązkowa. Z uwagi na ciągłość fabularną i przedstawione wydarzenia, każdy wojownik musi się zmierzyć z tym przeciwnikiem. 📚 Leviatan se probouzí 🖋️ James S. A. Corey Oblačno, miestami medziplanetárne vojny. Ľudstvo osídlilo mesiac. A po ňom aj Mars a pás asteroidov. Ako to však býva, ani vo vesmíre ľudstvo nenachádza mier a čelí mimozenským hrozbám a aj sebe samým. Kniha sleduje príbeh dvoch postáv, kapitána Holdena, ktorý so svojou posádkou narazí na opustenú loď a v nej objaví tajomstvo medzigalaktických rozmerov, a detektíva Millera, ktorý dostane za úlohu vypátrať dcéru bohatého podnikateľa, ktorá za záhadných okolností zmizla práve v čase vyostrujúcich sa medziplanetárnych vzťahov. Osudy oboch sa pretnú a rozpútajú vesmírnu vojnu. Ale čo ak je práve tá to najmenšie, čoho by sa ľudstvo malo obávať? Dvojica spisovateľov Daniel Abraham a Ty Franck sa jedného dňa rozhodli napísať spoločné sci-fi. A potom ďalšie a ďalšie. Nakoniec vytvorili jeden z najzaujímavejších a prudko čitateľnych moderných sci-fi svetov, z ktorého vznikol aj úspešný seriál. Už od začiatku má čitateľ pocit, že sleduje vznik niečoho väčšieho, . Príbeh je akčný hneď od prvých strán a až do konca sa v ňom stále niečo deje. Spoznávame nové postavy a aj keď ich je veľa, vďaka ich unikátnym povahovým črtám je v nich ľahké sa orientovať. Svet je pochmúrny, obe príbehové línie majú niečo do seba, či už detektívna s Millerom alebo trochu akčnejšie s Holdenom, nájdu sa dokonca aj hororové prvky. Vec, ktorú musím ale naozaj vyzdvihnúť, je uveritelnosť sveta. Autori zvolili prístup, v ktorom sa snažia priblížiť lode a cestovanie vesmírom čo najbližie realite, nenájdeme tu tak žiadne špeciálne pohony, štíty a podobne. Knihu som síce čítal v češtine, ale tento rok bude vychádzať aj v slovenčine pod taktovkou vydavateľstva @lindeni.sk . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️|5 Vydalo vydavateľstvo Triton
