Still very much reading my fiction, but fancied something historical I can dip in and out of over the spring/summer, so I've picked up Cleopatra: A Life. Usually I read anything Tudor, and I still might do that because I really LOVE that time period. But, I wanted to expand my historical knowledge, so why not learn more about Cleopatra. I'm only 8 pages in, but she was a total badass, and men couldn't handle a woman with power, we know this historically, and sadly still today in certain places. RECENZJA ✒ Czasem potrzebujemy czegoś relaksującego, niewymagającego zbyt wiele myślenia. Po prostu czasoumilacza. I taką książkę miałam przyjemność ostatnio czytać. Tytułowa Lily to taka bardziej ogarnięta wersja Bridget Jones. Jest studentką anglistyki kochającą kulinaria. Miłości nie szuka, bo po ostatnim związku z maminsynkiem dobrze jej jako singielce. Pracuje dorywczo, ale nadal nie ma pomysłu na swoją przyszłość. Zbiegiem okoliczności dostaje pracę w roli tłumacza. Jej pracodawcą okazuje się człowiek, którego kiedyś poznała w niezbyt fortunnych okolicznościach. I tu stawiam kropkę, żeby za dużo nie powiedzieć, choć już pewnie da się zauważyć, że to typowy schemat komedii romantycznej. Aleksandra Szoka-Cywińska stworzyła dość przewidywalną, acz wciągajacą historię, pełną wpadek, zabawnych tekstów i sympatycznych bohaterów. Co prawda opis od wydawcy trochę nagina rzeczywistość, ale mimo to czytałam tę książkę z przyjemnością. Kartki przewracały się praktycznie same i bardzo szybko dotarłam do ostatniej strony. Nie tylko za sprawą niewielkiej objętości, ale też i lekkiego języka, niewymuszonych dialogów oraz krótkich i zwięzłych opisów. Dużo dynamiki wprowadzały w tej historii postacie drugoplanowe. Zwariowane współlokatorki Lily to zdecydowany plus. Zabrakło mi trochę rozwinięcia i dokończenia niektórych wątków. Szczególnie tego, który z pozoru miał być tym głównym, a moim zdaniem nie był do końca dopracowany. "Lily przez igrek" niespodziewanie zabrała mnie w podróż w lata 90 XXw. Poprzez liczne wspomnienia bohaterki odżyły także moje wspomnienia z lat dzieciństwa. Podobnie jak Lily wychowywałam się na wsi, więc z rozrzewnieniem czytałam te wszystkie mądrości i porzekadła. I ten zwyczaj, że do wody wchodzi się dopiero po św. Jana... ;) Poczułam się jakbym znów miała 10 lat i spędzała beztroskie wakacje nad jeziorem. Uwielbiam, kiedy książka wywołuje we mnie takie emocje. A tu niejednokrotnie miałam ku temu okazję. ⬇️cd w komentarzu

The Recovery Agent by Janet Evanovich In anticipation of what I thought was the June release of The Kings Ransom Book 2 in the Rose series I thought I would do a quick review of book 1, The Recovery Agent which I read earlier this year. Unfortunately the release date had to be moved out to June 2025 😭. I thought I would post this anyway because I found it to be a fun read that others might want to enjoy. Gabriela Rose is a sassy no nonsense recovery agent. She knows how to get back lost items. Individuals and companies seeking lost treasures, stolen heirlooms, or missing items hire her. She’s dependable, cool under pressure, and trained in weapons of all types. Gabriela’s current job is personal, it’s for her family, whose home is going to be lost if they can’t come up with a lot of money quickly. Gabriela, inspired by a family legend sets off for Peru. The Ring of Solomon and the lost treasure of Lima is what she is looking for. Gabriela’s ex-husband, Rafer has the map that might point the way to the treasure. Problem is, he’s not about to let Gabriela find it without him. Rafer is the calm to Gabriela’s wild determination. When not bickering the two make an impressive team. This book was light and fun, with enough action to keep the storyline moving. For those that like the heat, this one is probably not for you. There is some romance but no real heat. I enjoyed this 1st installment in the Rose series and am looking forward to book #2. RECENZJA ✒ "Zamieć" dosłownie zmiotła mnie z powierzchni ziemi. Najtrudniejsze w recenzowaniu książek K.Wójciak jest to, że trzeba tak uważać na słowa, by nie zdradzić czegoś ważnego z fabuły. A tu akurat każdy szczegół ma znaczenie. Wspomnę więc tylko o motywach, z jakimi mamy do czynienia. Jest doskonale zaplanowana zbrodnia, zemsta za doznane krzywdy, trauma po ogromnej tragedii, znęcanie się nad dziećmi i choroba psychiczna. Ale z drugiej strony jest również nadzieja na nowe życie, motyw drugiej szansy, wierność i poświęcenie. Narratorzy to Callie i Griffin, którzy jednocześnie są glownymi bohaterami. W przypadku tego drugiego mamy też powrót do jego dzieciństwa, co znacząco wpływa na zrozumienie fabuły i postrzeganie zachowań kilku osób. Bo trzeba przyznać, że w kwestii budowania charakterów i psychiki postaci ten thriller jest rewelacyjny. Do tej pory myslałam, że to "Cel" był najlepszą książką Karoliny, a "Apka" najbardziej brutalną. "Zamieć" je przebija. Autorka znów wodzi czytelnika za nos i bezbłędnie wyprowadza w pole pozostawiając mętlik w głowie i uczucie niedowierzania. Stopniowe budowanie napięcia, wprowadzanie kolejnych bohaterów i kilka zaskakujących zwrotów akcji sprawia, że za każdym razem jedyne, co przychodzi na myśl, to "nieprawdopodobne". Zgrzytnęło mi jedynie raz, a mianowicie na początku zirytowało mnie zachowanie Callie. Jednak w miarę zagłębiania się w opowieść ta irytacja przeradzała się w zrozumienie. W przypadku książek Karoliny rekomendacja może być tylko jedna - czytajcie! Wydawać by się mogło, że książka będzie sielska - czy nie tak wskazuje tytuł i okładka? Jednak wczytując się w tę historię widzimy, jakie rozterki towarzyszą bohaterom. Każde z nich zostało w pewnien sposób poturbowane przez życie i chcą po prostu uciec od problemów, a częściowo także je rozwiązać. Los krzyżuje ich drogi i sprawia, że na pozór zwykłe spotkanie zmienia się w znajomość, której oboje się nie spodziewali. Chęć, a raczej konieczność zaczęcia nowego życia sprawia, że decydują się oni na kroki, których kiedyś nawet by się nie podjęli. To wszystko sprawia, że na nowo odnajdują spokój, chociaż droga to tego jest kręta i wyboista. Bohaterka dostaje w spadku domek, który zmienia jej dotychczasowe życie. Tajemnice rodzinne skrywane przez lata zaczynają wychodzić na jaw, a ona sama pragnie tylko poznać prawdę, która została przed nią zatajona. Sielskość natury, która otacza bohaterów nie jest w stanie przykryć bolesnych emocji, które także towarzyszą podczas lektury książki. Autorka sprytnie łączy zarówno lekkość, jak i bolesną stronę tej historii. Pokazuje, jak zza ciemnych chmur, może wyjść piękne słońce i rozjaśnić życie. Tak jak właśnie stało się na przykładzie bohaterów. Ta książka to pełna emocji historia, która pokazuje, że nie można się poddawać i zawsze dążyć do szczęścia, chociaż nie zawsze droga do niego jest łatwa. Pokazuje jak wiele zmian może zajść w życiu i nawet jeśli nie zawsze są one dobre, to bywa że właśnie są po coś. Udowadnia, że nic nie dzieje się bez przyczyny, a każdy z nas ma na świecie jakieś "zadanie". W tej książce nawet najmniejszy przedmiot ma duszę. Przeszłość przeplata się z teraźniejszością. Czyta się trochę jak baśnie z 1001 nocy z tym, że tu rolę pięknej Szeherezady gra pan Andrzej, który stopniowo odkrywa przed Zofią i Szymonem kolejne tajemnice sprzed lat. Małgorzata Witkiewicz to autorka, po której książki sięgam w ciemno, bo wiem, że to będzie przyjemnie spędzony czas. Lekki język, plastyczne opisy, niewymuszone dialogi i nutka dobrego humoru. Bohaterowie, których od razu wiem, czy lubię czy nie (choc zdarzają się irytujące zachowania zarówno u jednych jak i drugich). Książka to wznowienie i cieszę się, że ponownie pojawiła się na rynku wydawniczym, bo wcześniej ten tytuł jakimś cudem mi umknął. „Puste miejsce” Paauliny Cedlerskiej to kolejna thriller psychologiczny. Po dobrze przyjętej przeze mnie poprzedniej książki autorki, poprzeczkę zawiesiłem już wyżej i cieszę się że „Puste miejsce” okazały się zdecydowanie ciekawsze od „Lalkarza”. Historia dotyczy zagadkowych zaginięć w mazurskiej puszczy, które wydają się być ze sobą niepowiązane, choć Jaśmina i Wojtek, którzy znikają bez śladu w miejscu, gdzie dziesięć lat wcześniej zaginęli podopieczni poradni zdrowia psychicznego, w tym brat głównej bohaterki Karoliny. Autorka używa dwóch osie czasowych, co pozwala na lepsze zrozumienie historii zaginionego małżeństwa, które poznajemy na kilkanaście dni przed zaginięciem oraz codziennej pracy i życia reporterki Karoliny, która próbuje powiązać zniknięcie czwórki chłopców ze świeżą sprawa małżeństwa Jaśminy i Wojtka. Pisarka znakomicie buduje napięcie, prowadząc czytelnika przez sieć tajemnic, sekretów, prowadząc prosto do puszczy, która to skrywa wszystkie tajemnice. Książka porusza tematy związane z psychologią, takie jak trauma, pamięć i zaginięcie, skupiając się Karolinie i wpływu straty brata na jej obecne życie. Jedynie wątek policjanta który w przeszłości był podejrzewany o zabójstwo córki a następnie uniewinniony uważam za niepotrzebny. Nie wiele wniósł on w samą powieść a gdy dowiadujemy się na końcu jak było naprawdę, to też niczemu ona nie służy a na pewno nie samej fabule. Na szczęście to drobnostka obok której można przejść niezauważenie. To co mi się najbardziej spodobało w tej historii, to samo zakończenie, które było zaskakujące i raczej nie do przewidzenia. QOTD: Who is a mystery author you wish wrote more books? Josephine Tey is the obvious answer here, but my second pick is Ianthe Jerrold. Dean Street Press has republished four of her books, all of which I've enjoyed—DEAD MAN'S QUARRY is undoubtedly her best, but I'm not sure whether LET HIM LIE (seen here) or THE STUDIO CRIME comes second (have to re-read the latter again!). Nikaro is a nightmare painter, living in a world covered in a shroud, making it perpetually nighttime. The city is powered by the teal and fuschia hion lines and the streets at night are filled with nightmares come to life. Nikaro and the other painters are tasked with patrolling neighbourhoods and painting the nightmares into something harmless. Yumi lives in a completely different world, one where the ground is blazing hot and the plants float in the air. She was chosen at birth to be raised as one of the revered yoki-hijo, blessed by the ability to call forth the spirits by having mastered the art of stacking stones. Nikaro and Yumi should never have met but when a spirit comes to Yumi begging for help, it sets off a series of events that makes their two worlds collide, each of them becoming invisible in their own world while the other takes their place. They'll have to learn to work together to figure out what the spirit wanted and solve the problem. Sanderson has definitely gotten even better at writing his characters with each new book. Yumi and Nikaro will both grow on you as you progress with the story (not to mention what a delight Design is 😁) and of course, it was an absolute treat to read from Hoid's perspective once more. I have to admit, I first wrote off Nikaro as a bit of an aimless layabout but his character grew richer and more likeable as he and Yumi helped each other see their lives through new eyes and gave each other the support and courage needed to make the necessary changes. Sanderson hasn't historically been the best at writing romance in his stories (though I'm immensely grateful that he always keeps it clean), but in the developing relationship between Yumi and Nikaro, you'll find something of pure innocence and beauty, so I guess he's gotten better in that respect too. The world building was, as expected, very well done, though I was hoping for there to be a bit more fantasy-wise. It did seem a bit slow in the middle and a lot of the action happened towards the end but I think I was a bit prejudiced by expecting this to be more like Sanderson's regular books whereas it seems like he's experimenting with something new. 4.5⭐️

Are there some mystery authors whose books you generally like, but find uneven? Margery Allingham and Patricia Wentworth are like that for me, though for different reasons. Allingham is a fine writer, but in some of her books I find the characters unlikable or the storyline borderline unpleasant; while with Wentworth the general quality of the writing and plotting can be all over the place. TOUCH AND GO, seen here, is one of the better ones I've read from her. (THE ALINGTON INHERITANCE, on the other hand, was a total trainwreck.) . . 𝑷𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒔𝒂𝒚 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒖𝒔𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒂𝒓𝒆.” ★★★★★ Genre: SciFi, Urban Fantasy. as a girl who grew up in a crazy metropolitan city like dhaka, no matter how much i complain, there is an intrinsic part of me that thrives on the hustle of this mad city. which is why this book meant so much to me, because even though not dhaka, but it features another one of such maddening metropolitans of the world, new york city as a primary character. the city of new york is waking up from a slumber, thus calling out to monsters and demons from other dimensions where this awakening of a city is diastarous. so to protect it's existence, the city choose five avatars, named after the five boroughs of nyc, to fight. and it doesn't really matter if you have been in new york for five weeks or five decades, when the city chooses you, you fight for it. my most favourite part about this book was how all of the avatar characters hated nyc and complained about it all the time, yet when they have the chance to leave the city or fight for it, they choose the latter. i loved the unexpected found family trope in this book, and the author's way of writing race and gender has always been intriguing for me. not to mention, this book is incredibly fast paced and action-packed. i was suffering through a drought of five star read for weeks but this book felt like a five star read since literally chapter one.

Trzeba przyznać że ta część jest dość zawiłą i emocjonującą historią, w której pisarka znakomicie konstruuje narrację, mieszając tajemnicę, napięcie i niepewność, co powoduje, że po każdym przeczytanym rozdziale chcemy czytać kolejny. Głównym wątkiem książki jest zaginięcie dwunastoletniej dziewczynki, która wywołuje falę emocji i podejrzeń w małej społeczności. Autorka doskonale buduje napięcie i prowadzi czytelnika przez liczne zwroty akcji oraz zaskakujące momenty, które trzymają go w nieustannym napięciu. Jak to bywa w książkach Abbott, tak i tutaj pisarka doskonale manipuluje tempem narracji, stopniowo odkrywając kolejne elementy zagadki. Nie brakuje zwrotów akcji które tylko zachęcają nas do poznania całej historii. Fabuła porusza tematy, takie jak tożsamość, traumy z przeszłości i ludzką naturę, co nadaje historii dodatkowego wymiaru emocjonalnego. Warto dodać że tłem do fabuły jest piękna i klimatyczna Kornwalia. "Nie odwracaj wzroku" to naprawdę świetnie napisany kryminał z inteligentną fabułą i wartką akcją, ale także historią pełną emocji i tajemnic. Polecam ją wszystkim miłośnikom kryminałów i thrillerów, którzy lubią być zaskakiwani i trzymani w niepewności do samego końca. Maas" 📚 ✨ I loved this book, however with the intricate world building SJM is known for it took me about 12 chapters to truly get hooked on the storyline. Nonetheless Maas delivers a gripping narrative filled with compelling characters, and heart-pounding action that will leave you spellbound. 💫 Set in a richly imagined urban fantasy world where humans coexist with fae, angels, and demons, "House of Earth and Blood" follows the story of Bryce Quinlan, a young woman who finds herself in a web of intrigue and danger after the brutal murder of her friends rocks, Crescent City. Hej, hej. Jak minęły Wam święta? Udało się coś poczytać? Rzadko sięgam po eseje a tym bardziej po zbiorcze wydania takie jak te. Ale w tym przypadku było inaczej. Książka "Gdybym wiedziała" została napisana przez amerykańską publicystkę Barbarę Ehrenreich, której pracę znam i cenię. "Gdybym wiedziała" stanowi zbiór jej najsłynniejszych esejów i obejmuje blisko 40 lat jej dziennikarskiej działalności. Barbara podejmuje różne tematy na przestrzeni różnych lat. Nie wszystkie z nich są nadal aktualne ale wciąż mogą być traktowane jako zapis poglądów, spraw, które kiedyś były ważne i o których kiedyś się dyskutowało. Taki mamy świat - jaki opisuje Barbara i choć skupia się na USA i specyfice, nierównościach tego kraju to wiele problemów może mieć odzwierciedlenie też w innych państwach. To, co najbardziej podoba mi się w pracy Ehrenreich to doskonała obserwacja współczesnego świata. Autorka porusza tematy takie jak: praca, zdrowie, kultura, rola kobiet, pozycja mężczyzn. Właściwie wszystkie ważne kwestie społeczne zostały przez nią zauważone i trafnie wypunktowane. Jej argumenty są mocne i w jasny sposób potrafi przedstawić swoje racje. Nie brakuje u niej humoru, ironii, niekiedy sarkazmu mimo poważnej tematyki. Jeśli nie znacie twórczości Barbary Ehrenreich ten zbiór esejów będzie idealny do jej poznania. A jeśli już czytaliście coś od niej to "Gdybym wiedziała" będzie świetnym uzupełnieniem, klamrą łączącą wszystko to, co najistotniejsze w jej wieloletniej pracy dziennikarki. RECENZJA ✒ Wierzycie, że to książka sama wybiera, kiedy ma zostać przeczytana? Ja tak. Do książek Jojo Moyes zbierałam się od bardzo dawna. Teraz się zastanawiam, czemu tak zwlekałam? "Kiedy weszłam w twoje życie" była mi potrzebna. Właśnie teraz. To słodko-gorzka opowieść o tym, co w życiu ważne. O emocjach, związkach i relacjach rodzinnych. O zaufaniu, trosce i współpracy. O podróży w głąb siebie, nadziei na lepsze jutro oraz wierze we własne możliwości. Ckliwe? Niekoniecznie. Bo jeśli dołożymy do tego intrygi, oszustwa, nadmierną pewność siebie, arogancję i mobbing, okaże się, że wychodzi nam ciekawa i bezsprzecznie emocjonująca historia. Autorka udowadnia, jak jedna przypadkowa pomyłka może odmienić życie niejednej osoby i jak kończy się "zadzieranie" z silnymi kobietami. Wszystko opisane lekkim językiem, z nutką humoru i ciętymi ripostami. Dużą zaletą są też kreacje bohaterów. Nie ma zero-jedynkowych ocen. To książka z gatunku tych, gdzie najpierw zdążymy już kogoś "znielubić", ale gdy na jaw wychodzą nowe okoliczności i fakty, zmieniamy zdanie. To było moje pierwsze spotkanie z twórczością Jojo Moyes, ale jestem przekonana, że nie ostatnie. One of the fun things about having your books available on Kindle is that you get to see when it acquires some Popular Highlights. I was having fun reading through the ones in A SIDEKICK'S TALE this morning. The most-highlighted so far is this passage from Chapter One with Marty expounding on his role in the narrative: "I wasn't the principal player in it, but if it hadn't been for me none of it would have happened, which is saying something. There's lots of fellows whose names don't get into the history books, but if they hadn't been there at the other fellow's elbow at the right moment, the world would have—well, either have missed out on something sensational or been spared a lot of grief, I don't know which. "Pocałunek Judasza" to najnowsza książka Ryszarda Ćwirleja, której fabułę pisarz osadził w realiach Polski lat 90., kiedy to PRL przestał istnieć, a na jego miejsce wchodziło demokratyczne państwo. Akcja powieści rozgrywa się w Poznaniu, w okresie, kiedy milicja przekształca się w policję, a w świecie przestępczym pojawiają się niebezpieczne gangi, którzy wymuszają haracze. Wszyscy bohaterowie tej książki wraz ze swoimi zaletami czy przywarami wypadli tutaj niezwykle realistycznie. Na uwagę zasługuje też poczucie humoru, dowcipne dialogi które znakomicie uzupełniły klimat tamtych lat. O samym wątku kryminalnym nie będę nic pisał by nie psuć Wam radości z czytania, jedynie wspomnę że wątek dotyczy gangu obcinania palców z którego swego czasu słynęła grupa Mokotowska. Autor niezwykle realistyczne przedstawiał zmiany społeczne i instytucjonalne w Polsce w latach 90., a ci którzy znają książki autora dostrzegą delikatne nawiązania do jego wcześniejszych książek. "Pocałunek Judasza" to nie tylko kryminał, ale także historia o przemianach, walce o wpływy i o to, jak ludzie próbują się odnaleźć się po upadku komunizmu, kiedy to część rzeczy szybko się zmieniało a niektóre nadal tkwiły mocno osadzone w starym ustroju politycznym. Ćwirlej zdołał stworzyć historię, która jest nie tylko dobrą rozrywką, ale też fajnym wspomnieniem tamtych lat. Czy wiecie co wspólnego ma wiatr z pupa i zwierząt? Och tak ja też pomyślałam o czymś zupełnie innym niż latające pajaki🤣 A więcej o wietrze dowiecie się z kolejnej części serii o Pompiku: Skąd wieje wiatr. Żubr Pompik. Odkrycia- Tomasza Samojlika, wydawca @mediarodzina.wydawnictwo Bardzo dobrze znana przez nas seria o Pompik i jego rodzinie serja nie zawodzi, jak zawsze. Tym razem Pompik z siostrą Polunka mają zagwozdkę skąd bierze się wiatr. Oczywiście nie ma lepszego spspoobu na nurtujące nas pytania, jak obserwacja przyrody i otaczającego nas świata. Wiele informacji normalnie byłaby nie zapamiętana, ale tu sposób przedstawienia zapewnia, że więcej faktów utknie w głowach małych czytelników. Chociaż by na fakt humoru, który do każdej historii wnosi tata Pomruk. Tym razem Pompik i Polinka, musieli dopasować swoje plany do pogody. A ta ich nie rozpieszczała i nie pozwalała na wędrówki po lesie. Bowiem wiało okropnie mocno. To właśnie sprowilo, że młodzież zaczęła interesować się pochodzeniem wiatru. Nikt nie udzielił im jednak satysfakcjonujące odpowiedzi, dopóki nie spotkali małych latających pajączków. A co one miały do powiedzenia o wietrze? Dr Benedict Prince is a forensic psychologist and an expert in sleep-related homicides. For the past few years, his works have largely revolved around the Anna O case, where a 25-year-old woman from an affluent family fatally stabbed two of her closest friends for no apparent reason and then fell into a state of sleep in which she has remained for four years. Ben's latest paper on resignation syndrome featuring Anna's case brings him to the attention of the authorities who, having exhausted all other methods, task him with trying to wake her up using his proposed techniques, so that she can finally stand trial. As Anna shows signs of beginning to regain consciousness, Ben is determined to figure out what really happened that night four years ago, to make sure he isn't waking up an innocent woman just to see her condemned. This was quite a unique premise for a thriller, seeming to draw inspiration from some real-life examples of resignation syndrome and sleep-related crimes (it brought to mind something I watched many years ago on the Discovery Channel about people who committed crimes while asleep). The story is narrated mainly from Ben's PoV, with a few other characters taking over every now and then and flashbacks to the past courtesy of Anna's diary entries. It was not a very action-packed thriller, but it did keep me constantly guessing with the numerous twists. Though I was able to figure out many of the twists before they were revealed, I have to admit that they were well executed. Events from the past seemingly mentioned in passing all tied up nicely eventually and the mystery itself was not too simple or straightforward. My only complaint is that towards the last quarter of the book, it started feeling like it had gone on for too long. There were too many false endings and I was just ready for it to conclude already. Kayla is just an ordinary fourteen-year-old girl...or so she believes. But one fateful day, when she's at the state fair with her adoptive mother and brother, all three of their lives are drastically altered when they get whisked away to another world. Why and how, you ask? Because it turns out that unbeknownst to any of them, Kayla is actually the daughter of the late Dark Lord Xavriel, banished to earth as a baby by her conniving aunts. Now Kayla is back and everyone expects her to take her rightful place as the Dark Lady of Zaradwin, a role which includes many "traditions", most of which seem to involve doing away with any number of people. Much of this middle grade book is quite entertaining, from the medieval setting of Zaradwin to the crew of interesting side characters and the snippets from The Dark Traditions at the beginning of each chapter. The magic systems and the workings of the castle, though not very detailed, were still cleverly thought out. I particularly loved how modern-day technology was converted to its equivalent version in Zaradwin; Kayla's mom's phone turns into a messenger mouse any Kayla's own tablet becomes a British-accented monkey-like familiar. The insistence of the people of Zaradwin on following their traditions, even if it did them harm or didn't make sense, made for some comical reading material. Now for the things that didn't work so well. My main complaint is how annoying Kayla's mom is and sometimes even Kayla herself. As characters, they just seem to be trying too hard, if that makes any sense. All the other characters far outshine the two of them, even the villainous ones. The book also suffered constantly from pacing issues; there were paragraphs taken up by unnecessary conversations and for a book of this thickness, I felt like the story could have been more complex.
