TB to a fabulous mini-adventure Always wanted to go backpacking/camping but not sure if you even like it? Or do you just want some low entry level practice with setting up that tent and working the camping stove? Then a mini camping adventure is just the thing you need! Look for an adventure buddy, look up where to pitch your tent and how you'll get there (either parking close by or doing the full day hike to your camping spot). In Belgium, wild camping isn't allowed. So you'll either have to look for a campsite for the night or book your spot at a bivouak area. That's a small, legal and authorised tentspot in nature, free of charge. At the latter, you obviously don't have any sanitary facilities. We stayed a night at 'Bivakzone Wortel Kolonie'. Too early for carb-loading??🤣 Hmmmm…maybe yes! Luckily I’ve a 15k on Sunday. It’s a bit of a tradition for me to have pancakes at my fav cafe before I pin a number on, for any type of race. I’m going to attempt to use Saturday as a marker to see where I am fitness wise. I’ll prob join the 5 min/km group (or one lower as in less fast) and see how comfortable or uncomfortable I am😂 ok on writing that I’ll probably go with the faster group. Anyhow looking forward to it. With regards to Leiden, I think it’s coming too soon. Only 2 weeks after this, then a taper week of sorts. Either way I’ll run with the aim of run smooth & strong and enjoy the atmosphere that I love to experience on a race day. And it’s all building! The trainer at Wednesday track nights thinks I should be patient with my marathon plans and just keep building, become faster in shorter distances. For once I think he’s right! Why don’t I keep building and go from there. Amsterdam doesn’t *need* to be the marathon! Maybe I should come busting in for a good Sprint marathon!! Your physical health is so important for your mental health ❤️ If you've been following along, you've noticed I am struggling with ongoing/frequent viral infections. My immune system definitely needs some help. My doc says part part of this s is due to the CMV infection that attracted in November. It typically ligers, has flare ups and makes you more susceptible for other viruses 🤷 Other part is me having trouble with taking adequate rest and my history of under fuelling my body. So with the help of my doctor, therapist and nutritionist I've worked on all of these parts to get me back to health. Today's a good day but I know I have to be careful and not go all in too quickly again. Sharing to be transparent and also keep myself accountable. Came home from work today just feeling so much anger and like upper-body feelings. I can’t say it came from anything especially specific. Maybe some feelings of tension from a staff meeting wherein I felt like there’s not enough of me or my time to go around. And traffic. Anyway, the weather is also garbage so I decided soup had to be on the menu. I made homemade broccoli-cheddar soup (sans the heavy cream), spearmint tea, and a green salad. I ate it without looking at my phone or being distracted, and I felt a lot calmer afterwards. I think that by listening to music, focusing on chopping veggies, and just keeping myself occupied, I was able to bring my stress down. I don’t have anything profound to say about any of this. I just had a green dinner and wanted to share. Now, off I go to try my luck with a yellow dragonfruit 🤞🏻

Breakfast or dessert? 😅🤭 I can eat pancakes every time of the day tbh 😇 What's your favourite way to enjoy pancakes? What time of day? Crêpes or American style? For those craving pancakes right now. Here's the recipe for some delicious and fluffy vegan pancakes. 1) make your flax egg: 1 tbsp grounded flax seeds + 2 tbsp water. Mix well and set aside while you prep the other ingredients. 2) mix dry ingredients in a large bowl: 190g all purpose flour, 1 TSP baking soda, 0,5 TSP salt. ( You could also add 1 or 2 tbsp of sugar/cane sugar if you like sweet pancakes. I don't add any sweeter because I think the toppings are sweet enough.) 3) slowly add 150ml plant based milk (for example @alpro almond milk) while whisking 4) now add the flax egg (it should have formed a gel) and mix well. * The dough should be the consistency of cake batter, if it's too runny, you can't make thick pancakes 🤤 5) heat a non-stick pan greased with some oil (I use coconut because it can withstand higher temps, ideal for baking fluffy pancakes!) 6) pour a couple of tbsp's of dough and use the back of a spoon to make nice circles. Turn after a minute or two. 7) choose your favourite toppings. Todays meals… I had a hard time getting all my macros. I just felt too satisfied with what I ate. I am fighting off some sort of cold/potential sinus infection that is likely contributing that. I found a new cookie dough recipe that I can’t wait to try. I love hiding healthy ingredients in foods that are typically considered unhealthy. It’s good for the kids, and good for me! Does this cycle look familiar? You tell yourself you’re going to take a day off from exercise, but you wake up feeling like you don’t know what to do with yourself. The antsy energy and guilt start to take over. Or better yet, you have a long list of stuff to do but those same thoughts and feelings STILL set in. You ultimately convince yourself that you need to work out because it’s the “healthier” choice and you’ll reach your goals faster. So, you’re right back in the gym doing the work…AGAIN. But if you’re being honest, it doesn’t feel great anymore. You love exercise and the way it makes you feel but the pressure to stick to your rigid routine is starting to... ...be unproductive for your goals ...hinder your relationships ...cause issues like irregular periods or constant gas and bloating 😩 ... lead to injuries or work against your training ...cause guilt and stress when you’re not doing it ...negatively impact your mood when you miss a day Even if your goal is to improve your fitness, skipping rest days is never the answer. Taking a day off not only from training but also from rest day guilt is essential for both your physical and mental health, and your performance goals 🙌🏻 Whether you just love a good workout or you’re an athlete, feeling confident on your days off is key. Otherwise, the constant grind on your body and mind will eventually catch up to you 🫣 If this cycle👆🏻sounds all too familiar to you, it may be time to re-asses your relationship with exercise. This is often a big thing that I talk about with my clients when we work 1:1 together. If you’re struggling with rest day guilt, we not only focus on food freedom, but exercise freedom too 🥰 We find a way for you to keep doing what you love while making sure it’s working for you, your body; and your life, not against you. If you find yourself stuck in this cycle now 👉🏻 Find an activity that you never have time for (like getting your nails done, cleaning your car, calling a friend, etc) and do that while you cut your workout down or skip it all together. Postpartum is hard. 😕 Our bodies, our schedules, our minds, our responsibilities change in a blink. HAPPY SPRING MARATHON TRAINING!!! Woot! I love to get my marathon training on! Yesterday I got to enjoy my favorite kind of day....The kind that involves 2.5 HOURS of running all by myself. I started my morning out 4hrs prior to run with protein pancakes with plenty of carbs included and a black coffee. 1 hr prior to my 18 miler I topped it off with a PBJ on whole grain bread. For race day, I would recommend going a lot lower on fat and fiber...but for a long easy conversational pace run, PBJ was my JAM! GU is my go to of choice for fueling during the run. (I get it that not everyone loves GU, other more natural options like honey stinger or skratch work great too!!). I shoot for 1-2 packets + gatorade or water each hour after the first hour. I am not religious about this especially during training BUT it definitely makes a difference! It is also best to practice any #FUELING STRATEGIES during training. I used to think I was super woman and eating pre/during/or post run was unnecessary. But then I realized I FELT TERRIBLE during and after my longruns and races. Post run, I had a protein/carb snack and followed it up with a well- #balanced meal of salad and NACHOS with plenty of protein in the form of pulled pork added. Again, not perfect, but life happens. The key is getting in a solid snack or meal of carbs and protein for recovery 15-30min after and following that with a well-balanced meal (including carbs, protein and fat within an hour or two after the run. I got in an 18 miler with a few miles through uptown NOLA and a few miles along the mighty Mississippi. If there is one thing I want you to keep in mind when it comes to measuring your fitness, it’s this👇🏻 ✨We could all eat and exercise the exact same way, but our weights and our bodies would still be entirely different✨ When it comes to measuring fitness, weight often gets focused on because it’s objective and easy to measure. Many of these things ⬆️ can be harder to measure (some are not) but say so much more about your fitness than your weight ever will. When it comes “seeing” results, it may be time to spend less time looking at the scale and more time looking at all of the above + how you’re FEELING. How are you feeling day to day? Are things getting easier? Are you having more accomplishments over time (goals scored, PR’s broken, weight lifted, less recovery necessary, etc)? Because these are things that can dictate your progress. When you exercise or train for the results that you want and fuel your body accordingly, the fitness will follow. That’s what matters most. Nothing is more distressing than when you expect your period and it doesn’t arrive. ➡️It’s important you understand that it’s your ovulation that delayed your period. Your cycle follows this timeline: Menstrual phase- your period (3-7 days) Follicular phase (pre-ovulation: 7-10 days) Ovulation Luteal phase (pre-menstrual phase: 12-14 days) Luteal phase never exceeds 14 days, if your period is late, think back to happened two weeks ago that your ovulation got delayed? ❓Were you overly stressed? ❓Did you have a big move? ❓Did you travel across multiple time zones? ❓Have you not been eating much? ❓Did you go through a break up? ❓Did you exercise too much? Your body is smart. If around ovulation your body gets signals that it’s not a good time to have a baby, it will delay ovulation until things calm down again. Every menstrual cycle is an opportunity to begin again. If your period was late, make it your goal to restore healthy ovulation for the next cycle. Best run this month!!! 🥳 Still 'only' doing 5k for sakes of my Achilles tendon rehab, but this was probably my best fuelled run in a long time. And it felt amazing! . For some reason, I was finally able to say YES to a big after work snack and it made me feel so full of energy for my rehab exercises and consecutive run. I had 3 slices of toasted bread with peanut butter and jam + a decaf soy latte. For me, this would be the equivalent of a meal in the past. Like a normal breakfast. But I felt hungry (probably had a bit too small a lunch today too to be honest) and tired. And I think I finally allowed myself to be kind to myself and eat enough for my active lifestyle. Achilles felt solid and I finally felt like I could keep running and even running a faster pace for part of this short run, without even really pushing myself. This is how I want to feel. This is why I'm doing this. This feeling is so worth the hard work and uncomfortable changes I'm going through. Consistent. I’ve been working on being consistent with my daily habits. Yin (the cat) loves that I’m giving myself time to rest in between my tasks for the day! What do I get in return from being consistent? I know I’m doing the right thing when I lose 8lbs in a week. Ok… I know that doesn’t sound normal, and it isn’t completely normal, but it’s part of how my body reacts to inflammation. I bloat. I hurt. I get foggy. Things start shutting down. My digestion doesn’t work right and it becomes severely painful. Sometimes it just hurts to move. I’ve taken steps to give my body what it needs and cut out what hurts. Less sugar and more water are the top changes but I’ve buckled down on my clean eating and taking the supplements to support my fight against inflammation. If you have a uterus and you’re feeling a bit 😖about your life - remember you might just be in your luteal phase. Every month there is a short period when I have no energy, my motivation dips and I am convinced that it’s time to just give up and move to Mexico.  I get frustrated and down on myself for all the things I haven’t achieved. And then I remind myself “It’s just your hormones, Dinara”. Here’s what happens: Menstrual phase - (Day 1 to 5 of your cycle) Your estrogen and progesterone are at an all time low & so is your energy. You may feel more intuitive and introspective. This is a perfect time to rest and reflect. Follicular phase (Day 6-14 of your cycle) Your estrogen levels are rising and with it rises your motivation, energy and desire to experience new things. Your creativity is bubbling up, your confidence is up. This is a great time to brainstorm and try new things. Ovulatory phase (Day 15-16 of your cycle) Your estrogen and testosterone levels peak which improves your mood, memory, assertiveness, confidence and communication skills. You want to be seen. Luteal phase - (Day 16-Day 28 of your cycle) Your estrogen levels drop and progesterone starts to go up. This can make you more tired, irritable, emotional, you may experience trouble sleeping. You will also feel hungrier than usual. This is a good time to organize all areas of your life, clean up your environment & plan for the next cycle. If you’re lacking motivation, have low energy and get overly emotional - switch up your routine so it’s synced with your cycle. However, if it gets worse than just low motivation & your hormonal dips make it so that for half of the month you’re extremely moody, anxious, irritable, have migraines, then when your period arrives you’re curled up in pain - those are the symptoms of underlying hormonal imbalances that you have to address because it’s not normal. Before I realized the impact of the menstrual cycle on me.. I used to get angry with my body and felt like it was working against me.. I was confused how I could be confident in myself one day and doubt all of my abilities the next.. I felt disappointed because my insatiable appetite at certain times of the cycle felt like it was ruining my weight loss goals I worked so hard for.. I felt that emotions were unpredictable.. I would make plans with people and then look for excuses to cancel them because I didn’t want to go out.. Knowing my cycle just made so much sense. Understanding that my body isn’t meant to be the same from one week to the next was a relief I’ve been looking for. You won't miss the eggs! Veggie tofu scramble. One of my go to brunch/lunch (or even quick dinner) options is this delicious tofu scramble. Ready in 10 min. And yes, those who normally enjoy eggs in their diet are devouring this plate 🤩 Here's my version 🌱 Ingredients: - 150g firm tofu - veggies of choice (I recommend using onion, garlic, red bell pepper, tomatoes and spinach) - a generous splash of plant milk (+-100ml) - 1/2 tbsp nutritional yeast - 1 tsp mustard - 1/4 tsp tumeric, - 1/4 tsp smoked paprika - 1/2 tsp turmeric - salt & pepper - olive oil to sauté the veggies Method: - sauté the veggies in some olive oil. Start with onion and garlic, then consecutively add in other veggies depending on their cooking time. - meanwhile, add spices, nutritional yeast, mustard and plant milk into a small bowl and mix well - crumble your tofu (I usually cut it into large squares and then use a fork to create large crumbs) - when the veggies are just soft, add in your crumbled tofu. Fry for a minute or two until some colour arises. - now pour in the plant milk mixture and stir well.
