The love I have for this book! I read it a few months ago and still think about it today. After reading Kristin Hannah’s, The Women, my mind kept going back to The Sunshine Girls. Both are stories about women who go into nursing in the 60’s. And see a war that is very different from what they assume it will be. The Sunshine Girls is a story of friendship and secrets. "Amiche per sempre" di Molly Fader mi è stato regalato per Natale dalla mia migliore amica. Lei non è una lettrice e immagino sia stata attratta soprattutto dal titolo. Io, appena vista la copertina, ho pensato a quei libretti di frasi fatte dedicate ad un argomento particolare... E invece no! E invece ho avuto al possibilità di leggere un libro che mi è piaciuto, con una buona scrittura, una trama delicata ma accattivante e personaggi così umani da far male. Una storia che riguarda due generazioni di donne e che ha tutta la forza e la determinazione che è tipica di noi donne. Una storia non priva di dolore, di rabbia...ma in cui le protagoniste ne escono più forti che mai! Diciamocelo, ad un libro con questa copertina,in libreria, non mi ci sarei mai avvicinata...e anche il titolo, per quanto azzeccato con la trama, lascia molto a desiderare...e invece e' stata una scoperta e una bellissima sorpresa. Un appello però agli editori vorrei farla: occhio a copertine e titoli, ve ne prego, davvero, perché così rischiate di privarci di letture bellissime 😅. E voi? I read 38 books in 2023. Not my best, but certainly not my worst! As the kids get older, downtime is rare and I chose workout classes over books. I regret nothing. ☺️ My favorite this year - by a slim margin - was Killers of a Certain Age by #deannaraybourn. Very, very close second and third were Hello Beautiful by #annnapolitano and The Sunshine Girls by #mollyfader. Let’s see what gems 2024 will bring!

Ho aspettato questo periodo dell'anno per ricevere questo dono perché secondo me è il momento migliore per leggere un romanzo che racconta di connessioni indissolubili, di legami forti, di sentimenti puri, di affetti immensi, di emozioni oneste, di amicizie vere.... Inoltre credo che questo libro sia proprio il regalo giusto da fare a Natale alle nostre amiche per dimostrare tutto il nostro affetto... Quindi non vedo l'ora di regalarlo, ma soprattutto di leggerlo e ritrovare quel legame speciale che io ho la fortuna di avere, da tanti anni, con la mia amica del cuore. Lascio di seguito la sinossi Un'amica è una che anche quando il mondo crolla ti prende la mano e ti dice: saltiamo. Per essere amiche bisogna assomigliarsi, pensa BettyKay. Thank you @htpbooks for my gifted copy! This was such a good read! I really got sucked into the story and the characters. This alternates timelines and while I did enjoy both, I loved the timeline of the sunshine girls in the 60s/70s more 🥹 I love the sunshine girls and seeing everything they go through. I laughed and I cried 😭 Two sisters are shocked when a movie star shows up at their mother’s funeral. From there, we follow their mother in nursing school with her two best friends and the other timeline follows the two sisters learning more about their mother after her death in 2019. I’ve known this book for good reviews, but I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. It’s historical fiction, but more family secrets drama than about the time it’s set in. I loved the secrets being unveiled layer for layer like an onion. It’s very recommendable if you like family dramas, historical fiction or a good book filled with great female characters. Characters: - Clara: is a little unsure about her relationship with Vickie, her girlfriend, while unveiling her mothers secrets. - Abbie: is a slightly insecure character in my opinion and it felt sometimes difficult to connect with her. - Kitty: I liked a lot as a character. I could totally feel that she was the movie star in this book and she felt like a very elegant woman. - BettyKay: last but not least the main character of the story. She knew what she wanted in life even though not always right off the bat. She kept me interested and I wanted to know about her. What I liked: the mix of characters, all quite distinct and lovable. This story weaves the beautiful life and friendship of "The Sunshine Girls", the ugly pink buttons, tears, happiness, drugs, war, and so much more. Their friendship is the kind that we dream about. I loved Betts story, I wanted more! I would have loved to know more about those published Vietnam Diaries! Clara and Abbie's story is that they are the daughters of BettyKay. Their mom was beloved in their small town in Iowa and the town is gathering for her funeral. The girls are shocked when a movie star that they never knew shows up at the funeral. The grieving process is difficult, especially when both women have things going on in their personal lives and they find out their mom had a side they never knew, with lots of secrets. This book was a book club read and I loved it. It was exactly what I needed to clear my mind. Their friendship was incredible, but we want more BettyKay!! Our book club had a lovely discussion at a local brewery with fresh local cheese and crackers! It’s small town girl meets a BIG secret, that stretches generations and changes lives for ever once uncovered. It has duel timeframes from the 1960’s and 2019. Parts of it cover the Vietnam War, which was new for me. ☀️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 ☀️ What a fun novel of friendship! Two daughters are mourning the death of their mother when a famous movie star arrives. They don’t know how she knows their mother, but this opens a lot of secrets. Told through dual POV, we find out the history of BettyKay and the glamorous Kitty. The two women meet at nursing school when they are paired up to share a room. BettyKay is from a small conservative time and this is her first time away. Kitty is more worldly and they butt heads at first. But over time, they find common ground. Kitty also has a burgeoning sewing business and brings in money doing seamstress work. This helps spark her interest in Hollywood where she eventually ends up after nursing school. BettyKay realizes that she’s not quite cut out for medicine either and joins Kitty in California. The book goes on to share more about the two women as they find love and start families, although not always under the best conditions. I really enjoyed the time period of the book and what it was like to be a young woman at this time. It’s incredible how these woman were treated and men were just free to do as they please. I also like the secondary plot, about the two sisters trying to figure out their own lives. If you are looking for an epic novel of friendship, please make sure to check out the Sunshine Girls. If you like a progressive leaning historical fiction, feminist themes & female friendship stories, this one is for you! Two estranged sisters reconnect for their mother’s funeral and everything is turned upside down when famous actress, Kitty Devereaux appears at the funeral. Kitty tells the girls the story of their mom’s life and reveals secrets from the past that will forever change them. I loved reading about the friendship between Kitty, BettyKay & Jenny. Each character was unique and played an important role in understanding their relationships to one another. I loved how their friendship was an integral part of the story and it really portrayed the tough choices women had to make back then in a beautiful and vulnerable way. The author doesn’t stray from heavy and important topics weaves powerful historical events into these women’s lives effortlessly. 4.5 ⭐️
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 The Sunshine Girls by Molly Fader It's such a delight when I go into a book blind and end up immersed in a story that I absolutely love! The Sunshine Girls was just that! A sisterhood born out of a friendship by girls that have absolutely nothing in common. Actually, they started off not even liking each other very much, but circumstances bonded them forever with a love that was deeper than most blood sisters have. Their story begins at the end, when two sisters are shocked by the arrival of a famous movie star at their mother's funeral. There were many secrets unraveled in this story which kept me turning the pages and not wanting to put the book down. You will connect with the characters and love them, despite or maybe because of their flaws. The bits of historical references are so vivid and expertly woven into the story. And definitely read the Author's Note at the end for the endearing reference to some of the inspiration to this story. These were women who beat all the odds for the time period they were in. Jenny and BettyKay survived nursing school only to dedicate themselves to nursing the men of the Vietnam War. Kitty rose from the wreckage of her own life to stardom. The character development was some of the best I have ever read and I couldn't enough.
