Title: The Book of Accidents Author: Chuck Wendig Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 • This was such a frustrating read 😖 When I found it at Barnes & Noble, I’d never heard of it but the synopsis intrigued me, so I decided to buy it because I had a gift card. I wanted to like it so badly, and even though there were some aspects I enjoyed, overall it fell flat. The Book of Accidents is a harrowing family saga about generational trauma, empathy, and the strength that familial bonds give us to weather the storms life throws our way. It’s a horror story, and while that aspect was executed flawlessly, the character depth and writing quality needed for this type of book to work just weren’t there 🤷‍♀️ Nothing about the Graves family felt realistic, from their interactions with one another, to how they behaved when they were alone. There was little chemistry between the characters and everything felt forced, so I wasn’t able to fully immerse myself in the story. At times, Wendig knocked it out of the park emotion and imagery-wise, but he would backtrack and undercut his own writing with poorly timed or just plain cheesy comedic relief or pop culture references. This didn’t work at all for me, and I’m unsure if that’s because I don’t jive with that type of thing, or if it was just poor execution. Without giving too much away, there’s a “twist” that I saw coming a mile away, which was disappointing. This isn’t a thriller so I didn’t dock my review, but more could have been done there. With that being said, there were some things that I loved! The slow build up created such an intense, eerie atmosphere, there was a lingering sense of dread throughout that I adored, and the commentary on trauma left a lasting impression on me. Ați auzit sau ați citit “Cartea accidentelor” ❓ Cartea accidentelor- Chuck Wendig Rating: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Nr pagini: 640 Descriere: Fără descriere deoarece vreau să intrați în carte fără să știți nimic despre ea. 😜 Părerea mea: Aștept de foooarteeee multă vreme să citesc această carte, iar când am văzut că a fost tradusă am zis că e semnul meu să o încep odată. 😍 În ciuda numărului mare de pagini, se citește foarte repede, având capitole scurte și mult dialog. Mi-a plăcut că are the perfect amount of action. 🤌🏻 Nu e nici super plină de suspans, dar nici nu te plictisește. Ba chiar te face să îți pui întrebări de genul “Ce tocmai am citit?”, “Care e adevărul?”. Personajul meu preferat e clar Oliver. Îl ador pe acest băiețel, empatia lui e ce avem nevoie în lumea asta crudă. 🥹 A fost o secvență pe la paginile 102-105 care m-a făcut să plâng. Nu din cauză că era emoționantă pe față, ci din cauză că am văzut substratul. Ador când autorii genului horror adaugă un substrat profund în cărțile lor. Acest roman de 640 de pagini mi-a vindecat traumele pe care nu le aveam. Din nou zic, am plâns și nici măcar nu era un capitol trist. 😭 Numai eu puteam să lăcrimez la o carte horror, numai eu 😂 Mă amuză că nu plâng la cărțile romance, dar plâng la horror. 💀 (excepție face “O mie de săruturi”). E o carte cam ciudată, deci nu știu cărei categorii de cititori să o recomand. 🤔 Nu intrați în ea cu gândul că veți fi speriați pentru că scenele horror sunt puține. Cartea e mai degrabă SF decât horror. A fost o singură secvență care m-a speriat. Sākums ierāva un tad sākās daudz par daudz visa kā. Protams, galā jau viss sanāca kopā smuki, bet man nepatīk šitāds savārstījums. Jāpiemin gan, ka beigas izdevās ļoti labas. Kas atzīmi pacēla tik augstu, ja stāsts bija uz stabilu trijnieku? Rakstības stils! Man patīk, ka uz vāka ir pieminēts Stīvens Kings (bet tam apgalvojumam, kas tur ir, gan nepiekrītu), jo Chuck Wendig raksta gandrīz tāpat kā Kings - pat brīžiem šķita, ka lasu paša karaļa sarakstītu grāmatu. Detaļas - nozīmīgas un ne tik nozīmīgas - aprakstītas ļoti dzīvi. Grāmatas varoņi - viegli vizualizējami un līdz galam izstrādāti. Šī bija grāmata, kuru lasīju ar sajūsmu dēļ teksta, pat ja teikumi neveidoja kopbildi ilgu laiku. Vai es iesaku? BOOK REVIEW The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig This was so highly rated on Bookstagram and Goodreads. And it was one of my, expected, top reads of 2024. But, it kind of fell a bit flat for me. I felt like the book could’ve been a lot shorter, it was quite drawn out. And, I just didn’t connect with the characters. This year has been a weird year for reading for me and connecting with books. It's been a while since I read a book and I screamed so much and so many times 😂. I could see myself reading this in one sitting, despite it being 500+ pages because of the short chapters and good flow of writing. I just wanted to know what happens next. This is a supernatural horror story that started out as something, ended up being a different story 😐. I really love the ending, it was so hopeful and optimistic. This is a story about fighting your own demons and trauma, how you are so capable of being better despite your past. It's a story about sharing the pain for reflection rather than projecting the pain to torture other people. I love how there's such a hopeful message in such a scary story. . People are saying that @chuck_wendig is the next Stephen King and I can totally see that. Stephen King's writing can be quite heavy and intense for me, which feels opposite to Wendig's writing. If you're a horror or Stephen King fan, this will definitely be up your alley. If you're a fan of Marvel Loki and Dr. Strange, this will be up your alley too 😉. I got my husband The Book of Accidents by @chuck_wendig, and I’m thrilled that he loved it. He and I read totally different things—I get scared too easily to read horror—but I love finding bookstagrammers’ reviews of books I think my husband will like. He enjoyed this one so much that I got him another Chuck Wendig book, Black River Orchard for Easter. Here’s his husband review: Husband (H): I’m trying to remember everything I read, but it was so scary I may have blocked some of it out. It may have caused me trauma. Me (M): So this book was that scary? H: Yes. There’s a serial killer in it, Mary. Who likes numbers. M: Which is scarier? The numbers or the serial killer? H: It’s how the serial killer uses the numbers that’s scary. The book has the right balance of horror, but there’s a little science fiction in it, and a lot of fantasy. And fantasy magic drives me nuts when it doesn’t make sense, but in this book it has internal consistency. Also, I’m a sucker for father son stories, which is what’s at the core of this one. And there’s something in this book about being your own father. M: Is that a spoiler? H: No. Because it’s not accurate. It’s figurative, Mary, not literal. M: Would you recommend this? H: Oh yeah. Chuck Wendig’s writing is as good as Stephen King’s, but he knows when to move onto the next thing. M: Are you saying Stephen King is long-winded? H: No. I’m saying Chuck Wendig is on point. Name & author: The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig Rating: 3.8/5 Page Count: 525 Genre/vibes: Horror, paranormal, thriller, fantasy, haunted house/town Summary: (next photo) Thoughts: I wanted to like this book more, because it’s been on my list for years. So, I think I hurt myself by mentally hyping it up so much. The overall premise is really cool. A man moves back into the house where he was raised by an abusive father with his family. There’s something creepy in the house, there’s something creepy in the nearby mine and there’s a history of a serial killer in the area. The set up is great: each of the family members have something to hide from each other. The plot was interesting, and it definitely kept me engaged, but I found myself bored during parts. I was more interested in the serial killer than the paranormal aspects. I loved how strong the family’s bond was and how much they fought for each other throughout their journey. Would I read again: Yes, because I think I would like it more the second time I read it!

Non leggo spesso libri horror, ma ogni tanto il richiamo del brividino lungo la schiena arriva e quindi mi sono buttata su “the book of accidents” di Chuck Wendig edito da @fanuccieditore Per una serie di eventi Nate torna a vivere nella casa in cui è cresciuto, il padre è morto, ma Nate ne è felice, gli anni di abusi e violenze sono definitivamente finiti e ora può concentrarsi al 100% sulla sua famiglia. Insieme alla moglie e al figlio, quindi, cercano di costruire qualcosa di bello nella casa che è stata sfondo di tante brutture, ma sin da subito a Nate è chiaro che qualcosa non va, nell’ombra rivede il padre ormai morto, gli animali si comportano in modo strano e inquietanti amicizie entreranno nella vita del figlio. Il libro non è particolarmente spaventoso, ma piuttosto intrigante e misterioso, l’horror e la fantascienza si mischiano bene con salti temporali e tra mondi paralleli, ma anche la narrazione cambia continuamente spostandosi da un membro della famiglia all’altro permettendoci di conoscerli al meglio e ampliando così, il più possibile, la nostra conoscenza della situazione. I traumi infantili sono sicuramente un tema centrale del romanzo, in particolare come questi traumi possano contaminare e influenzare la persona diventata adulta: violenza chiama violenza? Violenza chiama disperazione e perdizione? O, magari, dalla violenza nascerà una risposta contraria come un amore profondo, un rispetto per il prossimo, una sensibilità particolare? Insomma un horror non particolarmente terrificante, ma che vi consiglio caldamente se vi interessa anche l’aspetto psicologico dei personaggi, ma anche, ovviamente, se non avete paura del buio 😉 L’avete letto? This was my February read, I am really behind on my reviews and posts, but this book took the whole month for me to get through. I had high hopes when I started it, there was an intrigue to keep going, but then it just would not end. And I didn't want to DNF it after investing through half of it so I just kept going. There is an aspect I enjoyed, the mystery and scary part and the anticipation they gave you, but that was it. It was a very long book with no major twists that you could hang on to. And in the end I was hoping the ending would make up for it, but it didn't and that was it! 🍀 March Wrap Up! 📚 🌷As spring began to show its face, I read a total of 9 books and dabbled with two others. I came close to completing my TBR, with a page count of 3,745. In March, I tracked down the Antichrist, met myself from another dimension, was mesmerized by a grapefruit, struggled to find myself, parted ways with my shadow, had a glass of champagne with a teddy bear named Aloysius, was nourished by salt water, practiced transcendental meditation with my favorite director, and laced raisins with sleeping medication. Le mie letture... horror 🪨 Con i libri horror mi sembra di tornare a casa, adoro questo genere che spesso, però, regala enormi delusioni, sia a livello letterario che, soprattutto, cinematografico. Ma non stavolta. Mi ero accostata a questo libro prevenuta e con pregiudizi, perché dai un horror moderno di cui si parla parecchio? Pericoloso. E invece devo piegarmi al mainstream, The book of accidents è un'opera costruita bene, un meccanismo in cui tutto funziona: l'inquietudine, i personaggi, i colpi di scena, un finale a mio parere ben congegnato. Davvero, non riuscirete ad interrompere la lettura. 📕 Nate Graves scopre che il padre sta per morire ma la notizia non lo addolora, perché il ricordo degli abusi paterni è vivo. Il padre gli vende, ad una cifra simbolica, la casa e Nate decide di trasferirsi con la moglie Maddie e il figlio Oliver. Spera che in nuovo ambiente Oliver superi i suoi problemi. Ma il male sembra inseguirlo, anche da altri mondi. 🪨 Il libro inizia con un doppio prologo e, sono sincera, parte subito in quarta, la storia ti rapisce già dalle prime frasi e non puoi fare a meno di andare avanti. Non è una cosa scontata e, l'autore che ci riesce ha tutta la mia ammirazione. 🪨 La storia è complessa ma lineare, il lettore non fa fatica a seguire l'esistenza di vari mondi e di diverse versioni della stessa persona. Idea parimenti inquietante ed affascinante. Se esiste da qualche parte una me alta, magra e bionda... non voglio saperlo. 🪨 Mi è piaciuta l'idea del tunnel, così come l'esistenza di porte che mettono in comunicazione i mondi. Ti da l'idea di una realtà stratificata in cui non tutto è visibile agli occhi. 🪨 Ora non vi aspettate il grande horror classico alla It, alcune soluzioni sono di certo semplicistiche ma tutto funziona e l'inquietudine è palpabile. E poi merita anche solo per l'idea suggerita che non sempre e non per forza il male porta il male, si può resistere e rimanere integri nonostante il dolore. Splendido. The family make desperate attempts to stick together, as their souls are fixed to be destroyed forever. Chuck Wendig has recently become one of my favorite horror authors. Not only are his stories unique, gruesome, and complex, but they sometimes take place near my hometown in Pennsylvania, which makes me feel deeply connected to them. I went into The Book of Accidents expecting a classic haunted house tale and got so much more. Wendig does an incredible job at maintaining a steady sense of dread. I felt so anxious and sick the whole time I was reading this (which as a horror fanatic, I love), and I was impressed by the number of times I was shocked by the plot’s progression. It went to places I never could have expected. I LOVED this story to pieces. It broke my heart with its moments of tenderness, made me cry, and creeped me with its weirdness. 4.5 out of 5 stars. My favorite quote was, “Did we need pain? Was some pain good, and some of it bad? Some of it ours to keeps, and some of it invasive? He didn’t know. Hola a todos y feliz viernes! 🤗 Hoy os traigo reseña de esta pedazo de historia escrita por @chuck_wendig (el que dicen que tomará el relevo al señor S. King). Una historia muy retorcida, con muchos cabos que atar y con una atmósfera vibrante y oscura. Nathan (un poli retirado), Maddie (una artista extravagante) y Ollie (un adolescente con una "sensibilidad especial") forman la familia Graves. Nathan sufrió maltrato cuando era pequeño por parte de su padre. Ahora este último ha muerto y le ha dejado la casa. Nathan se niega a volver a ese horrible lugar, pero su propio hijo no termina de encajar en su instituto y su mujer cree que a todos les vendría bien un cambio de aires. Así que volverán al pueblo de su infancia, donde muy pronto las situaciones espantosas, los traumas y los fantasmas del pasado empezarán a atormentarles. En un principio todo parecerá fluir. Ollie ha conocido a un chico bastante extraño, aficionado a la magia negra al que le gusta coquetear con demonios (oye! y los papás felices porque tiene un amiguito). Maddie está "on-fire" con su arte y Nathan también empezará a entablar amistad con su vecino. Enseguida comenzarán a pasar cosas muy extrañas y turbias. Ecos sombríos del pasado están retumbando entre todos los habitantes del pueblo y parece que todo el mundo tiene algún misterio que ocultar. Toda la atmósfera está envuelta con un halo enigmático y peligroso que te atrapa. El nuevo comienzo que buscaban se tornará en una pesada lucha constante del bien contra el mal. Y ahora, lo que ocurrió hace mucho tiempo y se lleva repitiendo durante años y años, ha vuelto a empezar y el ciclo tiene que cerrarse por fin, ¿lo hará?. Uf, a ver por donde empiezo 🤣 La historia me ha parecido bastante entretenida pero hay que estar muy atento porque hay muchos, muchísimos horizontes abiertos (cosa que hace que la historia se líe demasiado y al final acabe con un número de páginas excesivo e innecesario. Tre libri che non vorrai mettere giù📚 ⁣⁣ La ninna nanna degli alberi.⁣⁣ Divorato in soli due giorni, questo libro ha tutti gli elementi per fare innamorare un lettore con sete di suspence e trame che non lasciano scampo.⁣⁣ Un noir elegante, credibile e ben costruito che si muove tra passato e presente, precisamente nel 2018 e nel 1998, per raccontare la misteriosa scomparsa di una diciasettenne e di un piccolo borgo aggrappato ai suoi segreti.⁣⁣ La millenial che c'è in me non poteva restare indifferente di fronte ai tanti riferimenti anni 90, e la nostalgia, quindi, non diventa solo un sentimento condiviso dai protagonisti, ma anche dal lettore. Per essere strano… è strano. Ma nel mio caso ammetto che mi ero fatta un’idea diversa sul suo contenuto. Mi aspettavo un romanzo horror da cardiopalma e invece nasconde un mix tra horror, fantasy, sci-fi e thriller. Che, per carità, i mappazzoni sperimentali mi piacciono, ma il detto: “Non è cane, non è lupo, sa soltanto quello che non è” si fa sentire. Ci sono fin troppi elementi e l'uso dei capitoli brevi è un’arma a doppio taglio, specie se consideriamo i salti sia temporali che su altri piani astrali. Nell’insieme in qualche modo funziona, ma ci vuole un po’ per ingranare e fin da subito si capisce che non bisogna fidarsi di ciò che traspare dalle righe. Più ci si avvicina al finale, più i nodi vengono al pettine e il tutto riesce a stiracchiarsi assumendo un senso che, da lettrice, ho apprezzato. Ma sì, avrei voluto leggere molto di più (specie su Reese). Ma se il worldbuilding lascia un po’ l’amaro in bocca con le sue descrizioni carenti, i personaggi hanno un’ottima caratterizzazione e mi sono piaciuti tutti, con le loro luci e ombre. In più ho sudato freddo quando nella trama è specificato che l’arma segreta della famiglia protagonista è l’ammmore, ma per fortuna non abbiamo scene da Power Ranger o il magico potere dell’amicizia di Naruto. È inteso tra le righe, rendendo il tutto realistico. Così come le dinamiche tra i personaggi, i riferimenti moderni della società di oggi e chi ne ha più ne metta. Tuttavia ripeto: inventiva top, esecuzione un po’ scarsa. Nel complesso mi ritengo soddisfatta. Sebbene le lacune, riesce a compensare con una storia avvincente e dal ritmo sostenuto, colma di mistero, easter egg e plot twist niente male. I personaggi hanno un loro perché, gli elementi fantasy e sci-fi si fanno apprezzare e chissà se ci sarà un sequel. Adatto a chi ama i romanzi sperimentali. Pro: trama nel complesso intrigante, ottimi pg e atmosfere. 🦉 Ho già trovato uno dei libri migliori del 2024 🦉 Mi sono approcciata a questo libro credendo di star per leggere una storia di fantasmi, ambientata in una casa spettrale e infestata, storie che solitamente adoro leggere. Non mi aspettavo minimamente di sbagliarmi tanto e, soprattutto, non mi sarei aspettata di leggere uno dei libri che (giù adesso a marzo) so per certo che entrerà nella top 10 delle letture del 2024. 🦉 GENERE: The Book of Accidents ci regala una storia tra il fantasy, l'horror e la fantascienza, dal ritmo incalzante, colpi di scena ben orchestrati, protagonisti con ottimi archi narrativi e profonde riflessioni. 🦉 TRAMA e COSA NE PENSO: La storia è quella di Nate, un uomo che, insieme alla moglie Maddie e al figlio adolescente Oliver torna a vivere nella sua casa d'infanzia dopo la morte del padre, un uomo orrendo col quale Nate non aveva più rapporti da anni. La sua infanzia infatti è stata costellata dalla violenza domestica e dai soprusi, ma lui è andato avanti. La famiglia di Nate si ritroverà scaraventata all'interno di una terribile lotta tra il bene e il male, incarnata in un ragazzo misterioso (e nel libro che si porta appresso) che farà amicizia con Oliver. In realtà, ci sarebbe tanto altro da dire. Ci sarebbe da parlare della capacità di Oliver di percepire il dolore altrui, delle strane capacità di Maddie nel "creare" la sua arte, della casa natale di Nate che sembra riportare in vita vecchie e oscure presenze, dei tanti universi che si andranno a sovrapporre in questa storia. Ma non voglio spoilerarvi troppo, perché questa storia va assolutamente scoperta leggendo. Mi ha colpita, sbalordita, emozionata e coinvolta da morire. 🔽 CONTINUA SOTTO 🔽

Una famigliola felice si trasferisce in una nuova casa. Cosa potrebbe mai andare storto? Tutto! Sono solo alcune delle cose che troverete qua dentro. @chuck_wendig ha scritto un libro dove l’horror si mischia con il fantasy, ma è soprattutto un horror. Estremamente disturbante e inquietante. Alcuni passaggi mi hanno fatto venire la pelle d’oca. I tipici elementi del genere horror si fondono con quelli della vita reale. L’uso delle parole dell’autore è magistrale. È riuscito a trasmettermi delle forti sensazioni di terrore e angoscia (vi ho lasciato qualche estratto per farvi capire di cosa sto parlando). Il disagio/la paura non viene solo da una direzione, dal “cattivo” di turno, ma ne siamo circondati. È stato come essere pervasi dall’oscurità, come trovarsi in un luogo sporco e gelido e rendersi conto di non si può sfuggire dai propri mostri. Sono presenti diverse tematiche importanti come il bul*ismo, la viol*nza sui bambini, il sentirsi diversi e fuori posto e altre che preferisco non dire per non svelarvi troppo. Un mix tra Shining e Dark (rispettivamente uno dei miei libri horror e serie tv preferiti di sempre). Il dolore può spezzare le persone? Si può davvero ricominciare da capo? « La ruota deve essere spezzata e ricostruita », ma a che scopo? So che non state capendo, ma lo farete. Quello che troviamo in 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 è un miscuglio assolutamente ben riuscito di vari elementi che sfociano nel soprannaturale. Si contraddistingue per le tinte horror, thriller e fantasy. E si rivela essere una storia molto più complessa e sfaccettata di quel che sembra! All’inizio sembra che al centro del mistero ci sia la casa d’infanzia in cui Nate Graves torna dopo averla acquistata dal padre ad una cifra ridicola - un luogo che custodisce ricordi negativi e che tuttora non ha pace. Di fatti, alcuni strani eventi che capitavano anche alla moglie Maddie e al figlio Oliver diventano più ingestibili, e soprattutto, Nate Graves è ancora tormentato dal passato e la casa della sua infanzia non aiuterà a riparare quelle crepe che sgretolando la famiglia. Affiancando i nuovi arrivati in città, entrano in gioco personaggi enigmatici che conquistano inevitabilmente la fiducia dei Graves, con il rischio di separarli definitivamente. Non c’è modo di ricominciare daccapo e, come viene ripetuto più volte nel corso della storia, la ruota deve essere spezzata e ricostruita. Il libro conta 500 pagine, ma queste scorrono velocemente, la vicenda stessa è mossa da un ritmo incalzante, una corsa contro il tempo per svelare tutti i misteri e per salvarli tutti, perché in gioco non c’è solamente la famiglia Graves. Sono rimasta davvero sorpresa da come tutto si incastrasse, dalle rivelazioni, da una trama così intricata… Non è un classico thriller né una storia di fantasmi: questo all’inizio può depistare ma l’attenzione ai dettagli ti porta a comprendere la piega che prenderà il libro. Last year i started with reading Chuck Wendig. I started with The House of Accidents,  i loved it, and ordered a couple of his other books. The month after that i read the huge Wanderers,  this one was even better. The month after that Wayward, and now i am reading Black River Orchard, his latest, a horror story surrounding apples. Its not on the level of the other books so far, but i will be on the lookout for more Wendig for sure.

💀 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔅𝔬𝔬𝔨 𝔬𝔣 𝔄𝔠𝔠𝔦𝔡𝔢𝔫𝔱𝔰 I don’t even begin to know how to summarize Chuck Wendig’s The Book of Accidents. But I went into it blind, so I’ll leave you in the dark too. You’re welcome. In the first half of the book, I was enthralled and excited for the story, but as I moved forward, the book took a turn in a direction that (1) I wasn’t expecting and (2) veers into some subgenres that aren’t necessarily my preferred go-to for reading. But I still enjoyed it! Like I said, I went into it blind, so I shouldn’t have been surprised. I did quite enjoy the ending. The story does offer a myriad of horror styles, so it has a little something for everybody. It’s one I would suggest checking out if you’re up for a little bit of all-over-the-place (in a good way) and for taking some time. It took me a while to finish "The Book of Accidents" just because the holidays were absolute insanity 🙃 but I got it done yesterday so it's officially my first completed book of 2024! . The Book of Accidents - Chuck Wendig 2.5/5 This book started out with a cool concept, a creepy serial killer and a strange town, but as it went on it just never stopped adding more things. Too many concepts and ideas that never came together in a good way. It just unraveled and became very messy and I wasn’t a big fan. I really wish it cut back on a lot of the things it had and had more focus. There were characters that felt very unnecessarily tacked on, weird twists just for the sake of twists, just strange things with no real purpose. It felt long, and not in a good way. There were a lot of interesting ideas but would have done so much better as separate stories. I really wish they had been. Wanderers' been sitting for my shelf for a long time, a very long time, and i don't know what I was thinking not picking it up as soon as I bought it. 🙃 Chuck Wendig's "Wanderers" is a remarkable and thought-provoking journey that delves deep into the complexities of human nature. Set in a near-future America plagued by an inexplicable phenomenon. Ooooo. The story follows a group of "sleepwalkers" – individuals who find themselves compelled to walk aimlessly across the country, as if driven by some unseen force. As these enigmatic wanderers take on a seemingly unstoppable journey, fear and uncertainty grip a nation already divided by paranoia and conspiracy theories. It occasionally feels sprawling, with side plots and characters that demand attention but sometimes dilute the impact of the core narrative. This can be overwhelming at times, but Wendig's ability to tie everything together (the short chapters are a plus) by the end ensures a satisfying reading experience! Given that Wendig wrote this monstrosity in 2019, before covid, and got it so damn close to the reality of things is beyond me. This book has often been compared to The Stand by Stephen King, and I must say that having read both, I enjoyed Wendig's apocalyptic tale more. Do I recommend this? The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig First book of 2024 and, even though it took me a while to finish, it was WELL WORTH IT. I found this book on my local library’s shelf in the “horror” section and wanted to give it a ✨try✨ First of all- the characters. THE CHARACTERS. Each one so captivating and so special. You can see how each one grows and what they are truly destined for as you near the end of the book. The confidence in Oliver, the bad-assery of Maddie, and the will power of Nate. Second of all- the PLOT. I felt like I was watching a Netflix series. I never wanted the book to end and each chapter kept me on my tippy toes. I didn’t realize how into it was at first until I got to about 50% and thought to myself, “it’s ALMOST done!?!” Love the third-person aspect, which keeps the momentum going and keeps it interesting. Adventure, gore, fantasy, horror… it really has it all. Such a beautiful book. My brain feels like goo after reading this book at over 500 pages. And once I flipped that last page, I had no idea what in the heck happened. There was so many things happening that made the book go by so fast and each chapter just brought more depth to the plot. I will admit that some of the supernatural and sci-fi stuff went a little bit over my head but all in all it ended up making sense at the ending. Some of the scenes, such as the maggots and the circus, made my skin itch and tingle, and I was imagining watching it all play out right in front of me. I loved the beginning of the book as I feel like it set up everything wonderfully, and it kind of eased the reader into the chaos that was going to unfold. 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ | TOP 20 #20 •The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig •Genre: Sci-fi & horror 》WHY I LOVED IT: Even though this one was a chonker, every piece of the book came together. I loved the mixture of horror elements with sci-fi elements. I found myself truly rooting for each family member and hoping for a happy ending. It gave me Blake Crouch vibes, which is one of my favorite authors. 》FULL REVIEW BELOW⬇️ Synopsis: Nate's abusive father is dying and leaving his childhood home to Nate. At first, all he wants to do is reject the offer, but his son Oliver (Ollie) and his wife Maddie convince him otherwise. As soon as they move in, creepy things start to happen. Nate is seeing the ghost of his father. Maddie is blacking out. And Ollie befriends a strange kid named Jake. Soon, their lives are flipped upside down, and the very fibers of their existence become in danger. My Review: This book was everything I wanted and more. It gave me Stranger Things vibes because of the mixture of horror and science fiction. It is a lot and some might complain that there's too much description. But everything that Wendig wrote had a purpose and came together in the end. There were moments when I literally gasped or said, "noooooo!" (and I was reading it on a plane😂) I was truly SHOOKETH not just once but several times! The story was so genius and beautifully done that my minor complaints don't matter. TOP READS OF 2023 PUBLISHED IN 2021 or 2022 As always, let me know if you see your favorites! 1.) What Moves the Dead - T. Kingfisher - I read this at the same time Mike Flanagan’s series dropped on Netflix and it was *chef’s kiss*. 2.) Daphne - Josh Malerman - Did not think this book about a female serial killer ghost entity thing would make me BAWL. The coming-of-age storyline really got to me. Fantastic. 3.) Jackal - Erin E. Adams - The explanation for what was going on in those woods was SO COOL. Lots to love about this one if you’re into the horror side of mysteries. 4.) Cackle - Rachel Harrison- I loved this book for many reasons, chiefly a woman coming into her own, but also, Ralph the Spider. 5.) Come With Me - Ronald Malfi - Possibly a new all time favorite book. Did not expect my feelings to get hurt like that, but what a profound story. Also recommend for folks who want to get into horror but enjoy mysteries/thrillers. 6.) Ghost Eaters - Clay McLeod Chapman - This is a heavy hitter that provides commentary on the topics of addiction, grief, and anguish. Really freaky stuff, but also really moving. 7.) Just Like Home - Sarah Gailey - I deeply love the conclusion of this book. Also another new all-time favorite. 8.) Chasing the Boogeyman - Richard Chizmar - I keep saying it but, another new favorite. This one made me realize my love for meta fiction and managed to tie in crime, horror, and a coming-of-age story. Checked all the right boxes. 9.) Children on the Hill - Jennifer McMahon - I didn’t see that ending coming. Probably one of the best plot twists I’ve read this year. 10.) Mary - Nat Cassidy - Everything about this story is fantastic. Also listened to parts on audio, and it may be the best audiobook I’ve ever listened to. 11.) The Book of Accidents - Chuck Wendig - The king of door stoppers does it again, this time by making empathy a superpower. How freaking cool was that. 12.) Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow - Gabrielle Zevin - My poor feelings were trampled with this one. A long look at the complexities of friendship and the different kinds of relationships formed when creating anything. So damn good.

El libro de los accidentes (2021) - Chuck Wendig "El libro de los accidentes" empieza de una de las formas más típicas que hay en las historias de terror: una familia mudándose a una nueva casa y un nuevo pueblo. Personalmente, es una premisa con la que conecto mucho, pero este libro es muchísimo más de lo que puede parecer. Aunque ya desde el principio se intuye que va a ser una novela muy extraña y que no solo va a ser una novela de terror (algo que ya sería maravilloso). Es un libro que fluye por los géneros fantásticos como pez en el agua. La familia protagonista no ha podido gustarme más. Nate es expolicía, Maddie escultora y Ollie va al instituto, y desde muy pronto empezarán a darse cuenta de que en su nuevo hogar pasan cosas extrañas. Y no solo en su casa, pues el pueblo está lleno de rumores y leyendas sobre el parque Ramble Rocks, muy cercano a donde ellos viven. En ese parque ha pasado de todo, incluso hubo un asesino en serie que mataba a sus víctimas allí.  No quiero contar mucho más porque es una historia que merece la pena ir descubriendo poco a poco. Los personajes son maravillosos, todos y cada uno de ellos me han gustado mucho y aportan algo a la historia. Y se les coge mucho cariño, sobre todo a Ollie, que es un chico muy sensible al que le afecta muchísimo todo lo que pasa en el mundo. Daban ganas de abrazarlo y no soltarlo nunca. Por otro lado, la trama y la ambientación también son maravillosas. Es poner un pie en ese pueblo y dejarse llevar por el torbellino de sucesos que se van dando. Me ha parecido una novela redonda y la recomiendo mucho. El marcapáginas precioso es de @ivyclementine que además fue quien me recomendó este libro. Mini Review - The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig Chuck Wendig is becoming one of my favorite authors for numerous reasons. I’m working my way through his past works, and The Book of Accidents is a bit of a doorstopper coming in at over 500 pages. It’s a tale about cycles, empathy, and love that defies the confines of space, time, and alternate dimensions. With all of those, those 500 pages seem to fly by. This novel contains many of my favorite things: weird things happening in the woods, zombie deer, spirals (literal and metaphorical), entropy, empathy, sensory deprivation tanks, and kids with powers. Nate, Maddie, and their son, Oliver, move into Nate’s childhood home in the middle of the woods, a place that’s full of terrible memories for Nate. This is all predicated on the passing of Nate’s abusive father, something that he doesn’t view as much of a loss. Once a police officer in the city, he now takes a job in Fish and Game while Maddie, an artist, takes to make some rather interesting artwork in the shed in the woods. Oliver is a special boy in the sense that he feels everything wholly and fully, the truest form of an empath. Of course, things can’t be normal out in these remote woods which affects each character in different ways. These various plots converge in a captivating way that dives deeply in what it means to break cycles of abuse and flourish in the light of love. One of the best things about Wendig’s stories is his ability to seamlessly weave themes throughout very, very diverse plots. The Book of Accidents shines in the idea of breaking cycles of abuse and how love in and of itself is a superpower of its own. I really, really adored Oliver’s character and the ways in which Wendig demonstrates how special his powers of empathy are. As someone myself who seems to also feel everything all of the time, empathy and sensitivity sometimes can feel like a weakness or hindrance. However, this character study shows the beauty of such a characteristic. There’s plenty of horror throughout the story (did you catch the mention of zombie deer and weird things in the woods?) to balance these heavy, emotional themes. All around, what’s not to love?
