September Wrap Up 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝: 4 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐀𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝: 4 I started doing #seriesseptember , where I only read one full series for the entire month, and I must say I have really enjoyed it! I feel like I have been able to immerse myself in this universe, and enjoy a really good long story. I was also rather ambitious, thinking I can finish all six in one month. Clearly that did not happen. I will be finishing the remaining two this month, but so far, Age Of Swords was my favourite. The female camaraderie and their triumphs through sacrafice was exhilarating to read. As we approach the final quarter of this year, I have to take a hard look at my year's goal and I think I will really have to buckle down with some book buying bans to make it happen. I'm so far only breaking even between the number of books I've bought and the number of books I've read, and with black friday coming round the corner soon, I have some catching up to do. Book Review 📖 𝐀𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝 Michael J. Sullivan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 In the shadow of the previous three, Age of Legend, unfortunately, has struggled to stand out. I have said this before, Sullivan knows how to write characters and their development. The characters stayed true to their core of who they were even after 3 books, but you can see the gradual changes in how they approach and tackle problems over time. With the time skip, I loved that we can see the comparison of the characters before and after. It's also an interesting contrast, in particular for those who rose to power, how much more fearful and less reckless they became and perhaps slowly becoming the people of opposition in the previous books. With so much that they've gone through and much more at stake, the relationships also became more complex and I loved that we get to see the characters navigate them as well without losing their core personality. Unfortunately, I will say this book fell short of my high expectations. With the time skips, and a lack of action and climatic ending, the story fell a bit flat for me, even though it ended with a cliffhanger (Sort of. Knowing that there's two more books coming after, it's a little predictable of their fates). I understand that the book needed a small reset and to introduce new lore for the series to continue, but I couldn't help but want more as I turn the last page, still yearning for that exhilarating feeling that Sullivan had previously delivered. Overall, while I still enjoyed Age of Legend, I felt that it was the weakest of the series so far. Hopefully, its sacrifice meant setting up for the remaining two to hit it out of the ballpark. Age of War, Age of Legend, Age of Death, and Age of Empyre by Michael J. Sullivan I mentioned when I posted on the Age of Myth (the first book in this six book series) that Sullivan wrote this entire series before publishing the first book. I think that is such a cool thing to do. Maybe I’ll do that once I’m retired and writing full time. As I’m working on the second Light-Twister novel (and a short story that I hope will be done soon), it’s interesting how constrained I feel by what I included in the Peace of Freysday (PoF). If I had written the whole series in detail before publishing, I could adjust things earlier in the story to better support things later in the story. An interesting secret, though, I dropped in a lot of named characters who have no role other than the tiny one they play in the PoF with the expectation that I could call on them in later stories and make people feel like I had great foresight. UGH THIS SERIES. I’m going to try to make this the least spoilery I can. But wow. This book series has grown so much larger in scale than the little cozy fantasy adventure that was Age of Myth. Very aptly named because we did in fact meet several legends in this story. It’s wild that what was a seemingly innocent side character in the first half of the series is now such a VITAL part of the story and has been all along?!?! I did NOT see that coming, and I also didn’t see such a redemption arc for a previously hated background character coming either. And the closure we got with a certain heart wrenching story line….my heart. Even now 😭 It all goes back to what I said when I first began this series; it is the perfect epic fantasy story with none of the predictability. Sullivan Overall Rating 4.25 stars “Fools believe silence is a void needing to be filled; the wise understand there’s no such thing as silence.” - Age of Myth I started this series in 2020 when I first joined booksta. I know it’s taken me a while to read through it all, but it’s not because I wasn’t enjoying myself. It’s because I really didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters. Good evening dear friends! After more than two years of waiting, my books finally came from Michael J. Sullivan. I will not put all the blame on him and his team, they can not control that it will be a pandemic that puts the whole world in to chaos and also that one of their team feels mentally ill, but they could have taken faster action, for they are a company that has sold a product and that means you deliver, but once they got to grips with this situation, the communication from them has been very good and my confidence has risen again for the team. And yes I know it's a small team, but they are also family and then you help where needed, a short quick message that the main person in the team is not feeling well, but that they will come back as soon as possible, is not very much requested I think. Now I'm going to stop whining about this, I promise. I backed Age of Empyre through kickstarter which is the 6th book in The Legends of the First Empire series, I have not read anything by him before, but i have heard only good things about him, so I thought why not and bought all 6 books. Now it only remains to see if all the good I have heard is true, if nothing else I always have 6 beautiful books, but I'm pretty sure I will like them. The only thing I extremely regret right now is that I did not back Legends of the First Empire Slipcase which came only shortly after this campaign was over, unfortunately it is so insanely expensive to send stuff right now that it is not financially defensible to buy any more. All the books are signed and there are matching bookmarks to all the books and it is always a plus in my book, two of them are signed but not the others and I got double of three of them. If you're looking for a more traditional high fantasy, but are intimidated by the works of Tolkien, Jordan, or Sanderson (because those books are LONGGGGG), Sullivan is a great leap into the genre. Age of Myth is 6 books long (each under 500 pages) and the language used is accessible. Ok, there was ONE character whose name I couldn't figure out how to pronounce. So I just called Mawyndulë "M" the whole time 😂 My two favorite things he does in this series are his "dragons" and the afterlife. Maybe that's why I was crying so much? 😂 The first book is slow, as it's setting the stage for the rest of the books. My journey with Michael J Sullivan's books has been an interesting one. In 2017 I requested an early copy of Age of Swords, the second book in the Legends of the First Empire series, despite not having read the first book. When I was approved for the review copy, I grabbed Age of Myth and read it. I really loved it. The Riyria Revelations had been on my list forever, but I hadn't gotten to them. So after finishing the first two Legends books, I then spent a month and a half reading through all of the released Riyria content. Then I read an early copy of the third Legends book... And never picked up books four through six, although I own them and want to read them. Now I'm gamma reading Nolyn, the first book in the new Rise and Fall trilogy, and it's getting me excited to finally come back to these. For context, all of these books take place in the same universe but at different points in time. Chronologically, it's the Legends books, Rise and Fall, and then Riyria. The #sixbookssoon tag crops up occasionally and as I was looking at my shelves, I decided to do it myself. These are six books that I own and am hoping to read very soon. Hopefully my mood stays the same and I do get to them soon. The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. This was gifted to me by my sweet friend @hello_from_nic and it's one that I'm very excited to get into. Dawnshard by Brandon Sanderson is a novella in his Stormlight Archive series, set before Rhythm of War. Now that I have the physical copy, I'm really wanting to get reading and then move into Rhythm of War. Stealing Home by Becky Wallace is one I've been itching to read for a while, but I've had so many others already going and didn't want to add yet another to the currently reading list. Age of Legend by Michael J Sullivan is book four in the Legends of the First Empire series and is where I need to pick back up after not having read any in...two years. White Nights by Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a novella I've been itching to read lately. It's short, so I'm sure it won't take me super long, but I've been hesitant to add anything to my current reads as I really want to keep momentum going with those. The Blue Castle by L M Montgomery was featured yesterday, so you already know my thoughts on reading this one. That will probably happen after I've finished her Emily series (I'm in the middle of book two, will then break to listen to The Two Towers before getting to Emily's quest). September has been a fantastic month. Not only did I get to go on a birthday book buying spree but I’ve also read some great books. Here’s the wrap... 🔹 Age of Legend. The fourth instalment of Sullivan’s epic prequel series, Legends of the First Empire. I adore this series, as I do all his books. This certainly did not disappoint. The ending was a great cliff hanger. 5⭐️ 🔹The Kingdom of Copper. A beautifully written book and excellent continuation of this series. So different to most fantasy I read but equally as epic in scope. 4 ⭐️ 🔹Soul Keeper. This is pretty different to the other Dalglish books I’ve read but maintains the fast pace of plot while still allowing you to grow really invested in the characters. A fascinating opener to a series I will definitely be continuing. In fact I may already have purchased the next book! 4⭐️ 🔹Children of Ruin. A relatively rare step into sci-fi here but I love all Tchaikovsky books. Continues the story from Children of Time and is absolutely fascinating in scope and complexity. Probably didn’t grab me quite as much as the first book though. 3⭐️ 🔹 Darkdawn. Brutal, Bloody, Brilliant. This is an excellent series in my opinion. However, I would say that Godsgrave was the peak and this final part of the trilogy didn’t quite reach the levels of the earlier books. Maybe not to everyones taste but I enjoyed. 3⭐️ 🔹Sins of Empire. Two years on from reading the Powder Mage trilogy I realised quickly I had left it too long. This is an excellent book. Fantastic plot and full of political intrigue, which I always love in a fantasy world. The book is divided into 3 parts that describe 6 years of protracted war between Rhunes & Fhreys. ⚔️ Micheal's writing is completely flawless. Everything from his language, narration, plot twist & the pacing is absolutely perfect & the way he builds up suspense & ties the missing links together always leaves me wanting more to read. ⚔️ You may feel like you know Elan well, but you'll still be surprised by well-crafted revelations about its lore & history that surface at all the right moments. The book provides a map of Elan & a glossary for the better understanding of the readers. ⚔️ All characters are meticulously crafted & developed in this series. I just love how Michael creates real heroes from those whom you least expected - Tressa who went out on a dangerous journey to save Suri & Tesh who fighting Fhreys became legend himself. ⚔️ Just as everyone is in place & the plot gets more & more exciting, it ends & that too in one heck of a cliffhanger. I'm glad I wanted for the series to finish being published so I don't have to wait for the next book. . Overall Age of Legend was a fantastic read for me.
