**BOOK RECOMMENDATION** "CIRCLES OF STONE - WEIRD TALES OF PAGAN SITES AND ANCIENT RITES" (2023) Edited by Katy Soar @britishlibrary @talesofthewind ----------------------------------------------- The standing stones, stone circles, dolmens and burial sites of the British Isles still resonate with the mystery of their primeval origins, enthralling our collective consciousness to this day. Rising up in the field of weird fiction, ancient stones and the rituals and dark forces they once witnessed have inspired a wicked branch of the genre by writers devoted to their eerie potential. My favourite stories: - "THE TEMPLE" (1924) by E. F. Benson - "THE TARN OF SACRIFICE" (1921) by Algernon Blackwood - "THE CEREMONY" (1897) by Arthur Machen - "WHERE THE STONES GROW" (1980) by Lisa Tuttle . . . . . . . . . . #folkhorror #pagan #stonecircle #talesoftheweird #britishlibrary #weirdtales #humansacrifice #druid #algernonblackwood #lisatuttle #arthurmachen #shortstory #shortstories #shortstorycollection #weirdfiction #dolmen #stonehenge #bookstagram #bookdragon #bookish #bookphotography #booksofinstagram #bookjunkie #booklover #bookstagrammer #bookish #horrorbooks #horroraddict #horrorfiction #folkhorrorbook

It’s the High Holy Week of Folk Horror, y’all! The weekends around Walpurgisnacht and Beltane are the unofficial markers for this most sacred time for your folk horror loving besties. It’s time to celebrate that special horror subgenre that revels in all things rural, pagan, and occult. This week I’ll be posting about some of my favorite aspects of folk horror, talking about why “rural” settings DON’T automatically make something “folk horror” (side eye), and sharing with you some book, film, and media recommendations and I hope you share some right back too! So stick around, but I cannot guarantee your safety beyond this point. Neil Williamson’s new novella, Charlie Says, is an exciting work of folk horror that mashes up the terror and nostalgia of 1970s British public information films with the modern fears of the post-Brexit, post-COVID landscape. The story is about Charlie Mason, a 53-year-old comedian who is preparing for his comeback in the age of “cancel culture.” He’s ready to show that he’s changed his ways, no longer going in for edgy, slur-filled humor that punches down. But when he’s called back to his crumbling hometown for his mother’s funeral, he finds that past-Charlie might not be so dead and gone after all. This might sound like your typical folk horror premise, but what Williamson does with the old genre tropes is thrilling, taking the protagonist through a strange and sometimes funny odyssey that references infamous public information films such as The Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water, The Finishing Line, Apaches, and of course the Charlie Says series for which the novella is named. It’s nothing short of miraculous that the author has managed to develop a flawed but sympathetic character, present a fully realized place with a complex mythology, and give us a well-paced plot with thoughtful themes in less than 100 pages. Thank you to Black Shuck Books for providing a digital copy for review. Charlie Says, scheduled to be published on February 29, 2024, is now available for pre-orders from the Black Shuck Books website. #folkhorrorbook #charliesays #neilwilliamson #blackshuckbooks #bookreview #bookrecommendations #publicinformationfilms

As the light is reborn this winter solstice, may your heart lift with the joy of new beginnings and nature’s blessings ❄️ The beauty and isolation of Lute is presented as a blessing that comes with a price, and over the course of the book, we come to understand why the people of Lute are willing to pay that price, despite the pain and sorrows that come with it. Experimental Film by Gemma Files 4/5 Experimental Film is a folk-horror with Lovecraftian tendencies that explores common themes (family, mental health, motherhood) through an exceptional means--that is, of course, film. Not that this is the first horror to connect the supernatural to film ( The Ring comes to mind), but what Gemma Files does differently makes this novel stand on its own: she takes her time to go through the history and culture of Canadian film through the fictional Canadian filmmaker, Iris Whitcomb, and the film professor and protagonist who becomes obsessed with her story, Lois Cairns. Artist Leopoldo Gout recently released a new book, Pinata, which touches on Native American myths and legends from the Mexican Peninsula, especially surround the Nahua people, and their colonization by Catholic settlers. The horror of this event left such a psychic scar on the land, that it's repercussions are being felt, even in modern times. Carmen and her two daughters travel to Tulancino for her renovation and overseeing of an ancient Catholic abbey, and a chance to reconnect with their history there. Izel, yearning for her friends at home, doesn't much care for the trip, the city, or the culture that's all around them. Luna on the other hand, loves everything about it. The people, the culture, all of it is a new exciting experience, and Carmen soaks up her youngest daughters reaction and love for her surroundings. While work is hard for Carmen, being a woman in a male dominated worksite, she holds firm and pushes through. That is, until one day a horrible accident happens on site, and ends her time in Tulancino. Regretfully, she packs her girls and they head for home, but something has come home with them. #horror #horrorbook #horrorbooks #folkhorror #folkhorrorbook #piĂąata #leopoldoleopoldo #leopoldogout #leopoldogoutpiĂąata #bookreview #horrorbookreview #bookreviewer #horrorbookreviewer #bookstagram #horrorbookstagram #bookstagrammer #horrorbookstagrammer #nightfire

The Dark Between the Trees Fiona Barnett This is the story of a group of academics who head into the woods to research the story behind a group of soldiers who went missing there in the 17th century and the folkloric tales that surround the disappearance. There are two story strands, one following each group. What a great premise! So far so good. The horror is kind of horror-lite, but that’s alright. I started out enjoying it as I’m a sucker for mysterious woods mixed with a bit of folk horror. But after a while I found the amount of protagonists impossible to keep track of, the lack of a single character to follow through the story not particularly engrossing. It may be my lack of concentration but for me the characters were indistinguishable from each other. And with pages and pages of housekeeping as to who was feeling what and for what reason and long arguments about which way they should go next I quickly lost interest and found myself skipping whole paragraphs. The ending was a complete damp squib. I don't think it's derivative, but really, if you want a story about a group of people lost in the woods, one of whom has twisted their ankle, who find a creepy old cabin while being pursued by a malevolent folk spirit, read Adam Nevill's The Ritual for the full-fat experience. #horror #folkhorror #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #folkhorrorbook #horrorbook #horrornovel

T. Kingfisher is one of my favorite author discoveries of the last couple of years and this was the book that made me a fan. If you’ve never read Kingfisher before this eerie bit of Appalachian folk horror is a good place to start. Off for an early morning at the library. Are you a hoarder like me or a minimalist? Per the publisher- 🌲When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more—Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants…until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself. Alone in the woods with her dog, Mouse finds herself face to face with a series of impossible terrors—because sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real, and they’re looking for you. And if she doesn’t face them head on, she might not survive to tell the tale.🌲. #bookstagram #horrorbookstagram #horrorbook #horrornovel #horrorlover #horroraddict #folkhorror #folkhorrorbook #favoriteauthor #spookybooks #read #darkaesthetic #bibliophile

I am exhausted and today is my only day off this week and I have tons to do. What I have for you today is one of my favorite reads of the year by one of my favorite authors- Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver. I adore everything about this tale that combines historical suspense and gothic horror. Add in a bit of folk horror and I was in book heaven. I think Paver and Wakenhyrst are a must read for lovers of gothic horror. Per the publisher- 🌲 "Something has been let loose..." In Edwardian Suffolk, a manor house stands alone in a lost corner of the Fens: a glinting wilderness of water whose whispering reeds guard ancient secrets. Maud is a lonely child growing up without a mother, ruled by her repressive father. When he finds a painted medieval devil in a graveyard, unhallowed forces are awakened. Maud's battle has begun. She must survive a world haunted by witchcraft, the age-old legends of her beloved fen – and the even more nightmarish demons of her father's past.🌲 Who is your favorite author discovery of the last year? #bookstagram #horrorbookstagram #horrorlover #horroraddict #gothic #gothicliterature #gothichorror #gothicsuspense #favoriteauthor #winterreads #folkhorror #folkhorrorbook #booklover #read #bibliophile

Weird fiction Wednesday! Wednesdays are dedicated to weird and horror fiction! The Order approves! The Talisman Jonathan Aycliffe This book has had the works thrown at it. A possessed child, a haunted house, infanticide, a figure at the end of the bed, bodies in the basement, unexplained deaths, a curse, all tied together with a hefty dose of Middle-eastern mysticism. When I started gearing up for the fun that is 100 days of Halloween I found it easy to pick the book for today’s prompt, Moon. Last year when I was curating folk horror for the collection, Ramsey Campell’s Hungry Moon was constantly mentioned. Per the publisher- 🌘Isolated on the moors of northern England, the town of Moonwell has remained faithful to their Druid traditions and kept their old rituals alive. Right-wing evangelist Godwin Mann isn’t about to let that continue, and his intolerant brand of fundamentalism has struck a chord with the residents. But Mann goes too far when he descends into the pit where the ancient being who’s been worshipped by the Druids for centuries is said to dwell. What emerges is a demon in Mann’s shape, and only the town’s outcasts can see that something is horribly wrong. As the evil spreads, Moonwell becomes cut off from the rest of the world…🌘 This started off really promisingly. The English moors, an isolated village, Druids- I was on board. I was hoping for folk horror of the highest order and then it took a turn into Lovecratian weirdness and I started to lose interest. I had to renew this book from the library because I kept setting it down while other novels beckoned. I did manage to finish it but I’m not sure it was worth the time. Still, if you like all things weird and wacky with a touch of folk horror give it a try. QOTD- What is your favorite horror sub-genre? Thank you to @the.book.slayer @enchantress.reads and @curiosityboughtthebook for hosting this fun challenge. #bookstagram #100daysofhalloween #bookchallenge #bookprompt #horrorbookstack #horrorlover #horrornerd #horrornovel #folkhorror #folkhorrorbook #booklover #bibliophile #ramseycampbell

I felt so many emotions during this one. I haven’t read many horror books that have left me feeling gutted by the end. The House of Little Bones is a fantastic read. It has all the elements of horror you could want; atmospheric setting, unsettling events, superstitions, and downright intense, creepy moments. The writing was beautiful and I loved every page. Folk horror is one of my favorite sub genres, and this book is an excellent example of that. The story was absolutely (and, perfectly) foreboding and I could feel the unease ratchet up each page. If you’re a fan of horror, especially folk horror, give this one a read. 5/5 #thehouseoflittlebones #beverleylee #folkhorror #horror #creepyreads #creepy #horrorreader #folkhorrorbook #darkreads #bookworm #bookish

Can a book under 200 pages deeply disturb you? Yes. *i mention trigger warnings which could be spoilers* This gloomy book was well paced and was incredibly creepy and had such a sense of dread throughout, I didn't expect themes of incest/abuse /anorexia but it wasn't *too* much to make me wanna not read it, it was uncomfortable to read in parts but I couldn't put it down, as a reader you're taken through a total shift in perspective half way through the book in regards to the main character Lori that comes out of no where and honestly made me go from feeling a kind of sympathy for her to total disgust, if you enjoy the more macabre/disturbing horror you will enjoy this for sure. If you're looking for a light spooky read maybe avoid this! . . . #kristophertriana #disturbingbooks #horrornovella #horrorfiction #shorthorrorbooks #horrorbookreview #horrorbookshelf #gonetoseetheriverman #folkhorrorbook #horrorreadersofinstagram #horrorreads #horrorbooklover #disturbingreads #creepybooks #horrorbookshelf #horrorbookstagram

Currently Reading: Plague Stones by James Brogden 📖 🐀😘 I’d call this more of a thrilling fantasy with gore, than real scary *scary* horror. 📚 I’m enjoying it! It’s entertaining and fun, and doesn’t seem to slow down or get bogged in unnecessary details, which can be the case with #folkhorror 📚📚📚 Description: A family’s fresh start in a quaint British village turns into a waking, ghost-ridden nightmare in this chilling work of folk horror about tradition, evil, and the Great Plague. 🐀📚 A bit of #hotfuzz vibes.

I read this one last week and didn’t love it, but didn’t hate it. It was pretty good! I kept seeing some buzz around this and had to see what it was all about. I bought it used from @pango and it felt brand new! A God in the Shed is exactly what it sounds like. It started out creepy, but dropped off for me. It’s gothic, folk horror, and that’s not entirely my cup of tea but I finished it just to see if maybe this was the folk horror that changed my mind. It wasn’t. But that doesn’t mean you won’t like it! The village of Saint-Ferdinand has a lot of weirdness to it. First of all, it has its very own serial killer! Who wouldn’t want to stop by a town with that perk? That’s not even the top of iceberg! This maniac has been running rampant for twenty years, and he finally gets caught. But what you don’t know is what or who drove him to do it. Don’t pass this up because I didn’t like it. Fans of gothic and folk, with some serial killer action would probably devour this.

Svobodná matka Helene ztratila iluze a před šesti lety i bratra Lincolna, který těsně před svým zmizením nahrál záhadné podzemní zvuky.

Hello, horror fans! My folk horror novel was translated to English and is now available for Kindle on Amazon. Click the link in my bio to read it now! 💀 FOREST IN THEM tells the story of Anna Schutz, the young daughter of a German immigrant in southern Brazil, in the late 19th century, who is forced to marry and live near a creepy forest. Her hope of freedom is Mathilde Jäger, a mysterious young woman who will carry Anna for a spiral of violent sacrifices. This has not been a terribly great reading year for me. I’ve read less books than usual and haven’t had many five star reads. But the one area of my reading that has been consistently good was my year long love affair with folk horror and with his latest novel, Cunning Folk @adamlgnevill has established himself as the current king of the genre. I don’t scare very easily but Nevill elicits genuine chills with this book that kept my hallway light burning throughout the night. From the opening scene the mood was set and I was captivated by a sense of dread, apprehension and curiosity for what would come. I was not disappointed. Nevill includes all the elements of a great horror novel- an eerie atmosphere, a claustrophobic setting and an ability to surprise and shock. And where Nevill succeeds and others have failed is that the shocks don’t feel like a gimmick. They are purposeful and integral to the success of the story. With the addition of folklore and wonderful prose, I was in book heaven. I knew that I was experiencing an author at the top of his game. I really don’t know how Nevill could top this book. but here’s hoping. #bookstagram #horrorbookstagram #horrornovel #winterreads #folkhorror #horrorlover #favoriteauthor #scarybooks #folkhorrorbook #darkaesthetic #bookishaesthetic #bibliophile #cunningfolk #adamlgnevill

Weird Wednesday! Wednesdays are dedicated to weird and horror fiction! This is a pretty unique Greek book, it's a short story collection themed around the pagan beliefs of the people of rural Thessaly, a region in central Greece with rich traditions and folklore that goes back to the ancient past, its prose style is really unique and the majority of the stories are only a couple pages long, but filled with eerie atmosphere and apprehension... Since this book isn't available in English the following review will be in Greek... The order approves! There’s a few negative reviews of this book knocking around (mainly concerning it not being “gothic” enough).. though death, decay, and the supernatural are heavily featured. I personally loved this one. I don’t shy away from descriptive writing, especially when it concerns nature, wildlife and landscape - this story has all of that. It’s mainly told from the perspective of a 10 year old girl, and so some things are easily accepted with clarity, and disjointed, in the way only a child’s perception is. I still have questions, but I was satisfied with the ending. It’s definitely worth a read! #folkhorror #horror #folkhorrorbook #folkhorrorrevival #folkhorrorbookstagram #folkhorrorbooks #folkhorrornovel #folkhorrornovels #horrorbooks #horrorbook #horrornovel #horrornovels #book #books #bookstagram #supernatural #ghost #ghosts #scotland #scottishlandscape #scottishwildlife #britishlandscape #britishwildlife #flora #fauna #pine #francinetoon

I got unexpected book mail tonight! Last time I checked this book didn’t have a ship date yet. So excited for this one! It’s Cunning Folk by @adamlgnevill. From the author’s website: Money's tight and their new home is a fixer-upper. Deep in rural South West England, with an ancient wood at the foot of the garden, Tom and his family are miles from anywhere and anyone familiar. His wife, Fiona, was never convinced that buying the money-pit at auction was a good idea. Not least because the previous owner committed suicide. Though no one can explain why. Within days of crossing the threshold, when hostilities break out with the elderly couple next door, Tom's dreams of future contentment are threatened by an escalating tit-for-tat campaign of petty damage and disruption. Increasingly isolated and tormented, Tom risks losing his home, everyone dear to him and his mind. Because, surely, only the mad would suspect that the oddballs across the hedgerow command unearthly powers. A malicious magic even older than the eerie wood and the strange barrow therein. A hallowed realm from where, he suspects, his neighbours draw a hideous power. Pretty much sounds like a perfect October read! #horrorpaperbacks #horrorbooks #horrorbookstagram #folkhorror #folkhorrorbook #bookmail #bookmailisthebestmail #booksofinstagram #booksbooksbooks #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #bookaholic #booklove #bookphotography #instabooks #bookworm #bookaddict #bibliophile

David Hine and Mark Stafford’s Lio Hook is excellent! I loved The Bad, Bad Place, so I was eager to check out Hine and Stafford's earlier effort, Lip Hook. It's very similar to Bad Place in its small town setting and folk horror vibe, but this time the story concerns a cult forming in the mysterious and isolated town of Lip Hook. I was just as enamored with this one as I was with Bad Place, and I hope the future is filled with more excellent folk horror graphic novels by Hine and Stafford. They clearly have a knack for this subgenre, and I'd love to see more from them. #horrorfiction #horrorbooks #horrorbook #davidhine #markstafford #horrorcomics #horrorgraphicnovels #horrorgraphicnovel #graphicnovel #bookstagram #horrorbookstagram #horror #folkhorror #folkhorrorfiction #folkhorrorbook #folkhorrorbooks

Things we say in the dark by Kirsty Logan ~ 🌑🌑🌑🌑🌑 ~ “A tragedy can become a horror if you’re not allowed to deal with it as a tragedy.” “It’s nice to think that if you try hard, you’ll be rewarded. It’s nice to think that if you name a fear, it can’t come true. It’s nice to think that even if it does come true, it can’t possibly be as bad as you think.” “Their mouths are so big and they open them so wide and inside their teeth are so sharp- and they love you, they love you, they love you so.” ~ A collection of atmospheric, folkloric, hypnotically unnerving short stories. Interspersed between some of the stories are notes, seemingly from the author, updating you on her experience writing the book in rural Iceland. Many of the stories contain similar motifs, body horror, folklore, haunted houses, the nature of fear, pregnancy and parenthood, female rage and vulnerability. @kirstylogan combines these elements to create beautiful stories that go from unnervingly familiar to terrifyingly unreal. ~ Horror is one of those genres that I am intrigued by but when I venture into it I am generally slightly disappointed. This was decidedly not the case with this book. Folk-horror is clearly the subgenre for me and Logan’s book is a new favourite. Logan seems able to tap into fears that are unavoidable in our modern existence, while also forming stories around supernatural elements, increasing the eeriness of the stories and providing us with a mirror to examine our own fear in. ~ I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in horror, folklore or books that deal with the nature of being a woman. Also any short story collection fans should check it out as they are very artfully organised (and just really good). #thingswesayinthedark #kirstylogan #pomegranate #horror #horrorbook #shortstories #queerstories #shortstorycollection #queerbooks #creepybooks #scarystories #fivestarread #fivestarbook #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #redroses #rose #redrose #folklore #folkhorror #folkhorrorbook #mythology #myths #mythicalcreatures #mythical #britishbookstagram #bookstagramuk

It’s #folkhorrorweek day three! Here’s The Owl Service by Alan Garner (1967, this edition 1969, Peacock Books). British children of the late ‘60s and 1970s couldn’t move without bumping into a weird book or TV show that was allegedly meant to be for youngsters but was often so sinister it was hard to be sure. There’s no shortage of great stuff from that era but of special interest to folk horror fans are The Owl Service and Children Of The Stones - which is essentially The Wicker Man for kids - in both their book and TV forms. #folkhorrorweek #theowlservice #owlservice #alangarner #hauntology #scarredforlife #70schildhood #books #bookstagram #fantasybooks #folkhorrorbook #horrorbookstagram #bookshelf #owls #horrormovies #horrorfan #horroraddict #horrorfiend #horrorjunkie #horrorlife #horrorcommunity #horrorgram #instahorror #ilovehorror

Look what I got in the post! Wicker Dogs by @dave_holwill I was very lucky to beta read this a while back and it is so good. It is equal parts scary and hilarious and can have you laughing out loud one minute and cowering the next. If you like folklore horror, Devon or just need a laugh, this book is great for both. I can wait to re-read it! 📘📘📘 After more than two centuries, Lady Melissa Dewer's current body is wearing out. Luring Patrick, the last of the Dewer bloodline, and his long-term girlfriend Polly to her remote Dartmoor town proves easy. Tricking them out of a child neither of them want to have will not. 📘📘📘

Wow, the absolute weirdness of this book. The ending fully left me feeling like ‘what?! Wait...what?!’ This is deliciously creepy folk horror at its finest. Richard and Juliette have lost their little boy Ewan but Juliette is convinced he’s not fully gone... Add in some creepy backstory, some very nicely tied up ‘but why?’ moments and you’ve got yourself a solid weird read. Not only that but thanks to a fairly large font meaning the book isn’t as long as you’re expecting (at least in the hardback version), you’ll race through this one. So glad I finally picked this one up, a perfect creepy treat to devour on a wintery evening. #starveacre #creepyreads #folkhorror #folkhorrorbook #folklore #spookyreads #spookybooks #folkstories #weirdreads #bookstagramuk #bookblogger #ukbookstagram #ukbookblogger #bookstagrammer #bookstagramcommunity #winterreads #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookrecommendations #bookrecommendation #hardback #bloodymarymetal #bloodymarymetalrings #sunflowersforjacqueline #peacockdruzy

I’m really enjoying Fell, my current read. Annette returns to her derelict family home after many years away and wakes the spirits of her parents. The story is told in flashbacks to a summer when her mum was very ill and a charismatic lodger with healing powers moves in. It’s a slightly spooky unsettling read with a sharp wit and well constructed characters. I’m looking forward to seeing how it ends. It’s set in Grange over Sands and one of the early scenes takes place at a lido which I visited in 2018. It’s been out of use and boarded up for many years but was good to imagine how it was in its heyday. #currentlyreading #folkhorror #folkhorrorbook #readsof2020 #bookstagram #booksofinstagramfeature
