✨BOOK REVIEW✨ Everything I Never Told You - Celeste Ng ⭐️⭐️ PROMPT: #buzzwordathon prompt May: a book that includes the word ‘every’ I had quite high hopes for this book, especially considering I had loved the previous books I have read. I just think for me, it felt a bit flat. The premise was interesting and started off very much like My Lovely Bones, the writing was easy to read, which is why I gave it two stars. I just felt like nothing really happened, but the topics were very deep and I actually enjoyed the way these topics are used to explore their family dynamic. I don’t think I emotionally connected with the characters here and I think that was why it wasn’t for me. I just didn’t care for any of them, yet felt like they were all crying for me to feel sorry for them. Nothing was ever their fault and I constantly felt they were blaming everyone else for their own issues. I can see from other people’s reading experiences, they were more invested in the story. I didn’t really like the ending and thought there were still a few issues that needed to be addressed, not so much to the reader but between the characters. Finally, another set of books slayed! My TBR Stack has been updated. Finished 2 Graphic Novels written and illustrated by Filipino authors. Both of them brought an element of fantasy and creativity. But what makes them unique is their content. One focused on dreams specifically nightmares. This is Lucia Dreaming by @luciaasul . While the other one depicts an imaginary place where everything is possible and magical. The one that I am referring to is Melag II by Sir @b.redila . Overall, I am impressed by the works of these authors which makes me rate them 5 stars, and will definitely recommend it to others. Literally obsessed with these kinds of novels. This book taught me so much and I absolutely adore Hannah’s writing for that. I really didn’t know enough about the dust bowl in America and found it so interested and really opened my mind to how people lived then. It also taught me the power of friendships and true love when you find it. I loved the idea that your friends are your mirrors. ‘We are the music.’ Honestly, this book is incredible. If you haven’t picked it up, pick it up immediately. I just wanted to pick it up every minute and devour it. Happy National Tea Day 🫖☕️ As I sit here sipping on chai and snacking on some London Fog latte cookies, I thought “What better way to celebrate the holiday than with a tea-themed bookish challenge?!” I can’t recall where I first saw this challenge, but I’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to partake. So without further ado: ☕️ Chai - A book with spice I’m going to go with A Court of Mist and Fury for this one as it was the first spicy book that came to mind 🤭 ☕️ Earl grey - A book with strong characters Strength can be interpreted a few different ways, but when I think of strong characters, I automatically think of Kristin Hannah books. The Four Winds had some of the strongest female characters I’ve read in recent memory. ☕️ Chamomile - A book that feels like a warm hug A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman 🥹 This book fit a couple of these prompts for me, but ultimately I chose this one because I said multiple times throughout my read that I just wanted to give Ove a hug! ☕️ English breakfast - A book you could read over and over again I know, I know…Another Kristin Hannah novel?! Yes and hear me out. The Great Alone is an absolute favorite and I really haven’t stopped thinking about it since I read it last year! Truthfully though it was very difficult to choose just one book for this prompt because there are many books I feel like I could read again and again without tiring of them. ☕️ Peppermint - A palette cleanser In a Jam by Kate Canterbary. Books like this are a perfect palette cleanser because they are cute, easy to read, and remind me of a Hallmark movie. ☕️ Rooibos - A book with a smooth talking character A Game of Thrones is full of cunning smooth-talkers; however, none smoother than the Kingslayer himself, Jaime Lannister. I’ve admittedly not read GOT yet, but if he’s anything like he is in the show, then I stand by this choice. ☕️ Green - A classic that won’t disappoint East of Eden. When Britt-Marie walks out on her cheating husband, she finds herself the sole employee of the dilapidated recreation center in the equally rundown town of Borg. She is soon drawn to the daily going-ons of Borg’s residents and most alarming, she somehow becomes the coach of the very untalented children’s soccer team, though she doesn’t even like soccer. Never having felt like she belongs, Britt-Marie slowly finds that Borg has found a way into her heart and gives her a second chance at her life. It should come as no surprise for any Backman fan that I finished this book in tears. While this wasn’t my favorite of his, I still enjoyed it. It had his normal dry and witty dialogue, so many wonderful and unforgettable characters, and a theme centered around community and coming together, which I love. Britt-Marie herself, kind of reminded me of an older version of Elanor Oliphant in a way. Are you a fan of Backman’s books? Which is your favorite? 4/5 stars from me for What the Dead Leave Behind by Rosemary Simpson. The only reason I couldn't give a full 5 was because it was kinda obvious who the murderers were and what their motive was so there wasn't much of a mystery to be solved. ✨BOOK REVIEW✨ Sweetpea - C. J Skuse ⭐️⭐️1/2 PROMPT: #buzzwordathon feb prompt: positive words I am gutted I didn’t enjoy this book more. This has been on my radar for aaages and actually thought I would like it so much I bought the whole series. It sounds right up my street with a crazy main character, thriller qualities and popular culture, but I just didn’t understand it. I didn’t connect with the main character. I understand who she is and her mental state but in a strange way I think you are actually meant to like her despite the things that she does. I just didn’t connect with her and wasn’t really bothered what she did. Towards the end she did something that shocked me and made me hate her even more. The story is very character focused just following this grumpy woman who hates everyone without any actual plot or storyline. The end was absolutely crazy with no redeeming quality and therefore I won’t be continuing with this series. I finally read the sequel and personally think it is better!!! Joyce has my whole heart and more. The characterisation in this book is absolutely fantastic and you are so connected from the beginning. All four of the main characters are so precious they could be sat around doing nothing and I would be so intrigued to know more about what they get up to. The tone and pacing is perfectly set out to keep you on the edge of your seat sprinkled with some added British humour and also some hidden deeper meanings. The book really hits you with all the feels and it becomes a whirlwind of emotion. I read this half as a physical book and half as an audiobook and enjoyed it so much. For this week, I chose The Heron’s Cry by Ann Cleeves, the second book in the Two Rivers series. It takes place in North Devon where two rivers meet and run into the sea. The main character is Detective Matthew Venn, a complicated but likable character and the cases in this series are complex and interesting. The Vera Stanhope is still my favorite series by Ann Cleeves, but this newer series runs a close second. ✨BOOK REVIEW✨ True Crime Story - Joseph Knox ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 PROMPT: wear something that matches your outfit Wow I love the format and the writing style of this book! The whole book felt so realistic and chillingly sombre. It felt really eerie to me because a few weeks before reading this book we stayed around the corner from the tower block and went in numerous bars mentioned throughout the book!!! Creepy! I found myself compelled to read on and know more about the situation as things went more and more down a sinister route. I think the usage of including the author is genius and loved the mix media. I love how every character you meet is unlikeable and a suspect including the author himself, I found myself constantly second guessing and looking back at what they had previously said in interviews. The family is messed up, the relationships are unhinged... the story unravels the more you read on. The only reason I deduct half a star would be for pacing. The pacing is really quite fast paced throughout, but I found myself reach the last 100 pages, eager to learn more and it slowed down and was followed by loads of description but then picked up at the end again. The Sam and Wyatt chapters take place when the are kids. They met every summer growing up. This is NOT a romcom. It does have a second act breakup that finally doesn't happen bc of miscommunication! And that you know will happen after the first chapter. So me telling you of the trope is not a spoiler. This book was very well done. You got to see the emotional growth between the 2 MC's. ✨BOOK REVIEW✨ Dark Places - Gillian Flynn ⭐️⭐️ PROMPT: a green book Really not sure how to feel about this one. I think the idea of the story is really interesting and something quite unique but the story itself got more and more unrealistic and very strange. I think the pacing was abit off for a thriller due to the dual narrative of now and then 1985. I think the pacing picked up for the ending but then dropped again but by that point I wasn’t completely interested. I disliked the main character from the start and disliked the other characters even more. I thought the animal cruelty in this book was quite unnecessary and was actually quite shocked at the graphic and gory content. Like I said, the whole premise of the book is an interesting concept but just wasn’t for me. I think the overall pacing was out and the whole story was just absolutely nuts. “Once upon a wardrobe, not very long ago, and not very far away” I feel in love with this story. I loved Megs and her journey to find the answer of where Narnia came from and if it is a real place for her little brother George. I loved her love of her brother and how she would do anything for him. I loved her budding friendship with C. S. Lewis ‘Jack’ and his brother Warnie. I loved their stories of their lives they told her and then she retold to her brother. I loved the many lessons Megs and we learned through these stories. Lessons of love, hope, and how sometimes stories are the only things that can help us understand life. “Sometimes fairy stories may say best what’s to be said.” This book was heartwarming and emotionally statisfying…meaning I cried a lot, but also felt so much love in these pages. I highly recommend this book if you haven’t already read it! “The way stories change us can’t be explained. It can only be felt. Catching up on life admin and rest today now that my final assignment of the semester is submitted 🎉 Also catching up on my coffee advent calendar and yesterday’s #allbookedforchristmas2023 #bookprompt and matching my mug with my current read, which I’m hoping to finish reading tonight @annamulreads & @lostinbooksstore This short story collection started off with a strong entry from Hans Christian Andersen, which I enjoyed as I used to have his stories read to me when I was young with the endings changed to happier ones. I got a bit of a shock when I first read A Little Match Girl by myself when I was a bit older 😬 Overall this collection has brought a bit of old-timey Christmas feeling to my reading but it has felt a bit task-y at times to weave through some of the more ~classic~ stories as they’re so different from what I’ve been reading recently. I appreciate that without the classic works we wouldn’t have the books we have today but I absolutely do not subscribe to the notion that you “need” to read classics - opinions like that just discourage literacy and reading for enjoyment and people should be able to read what they want! I’m planning to give Jeanette Winterson’s Christmas stories a try next after @what_5_a_r_a_h_read let me know it was 99p so I’ll see how some slightly more contemporary writing compares. Just keeping the non-fiction reads rolling this month. I read When Breath Becomes Air for my Non-Fiction book for #pawsandreadathon2023 prompt, hosted by Erin, @paws.and.read This was an emotionally raw memoir about a young neurosurgeon who was diagnosed with cancer. In it we follow him through what it was like for him to go from not being interested in medicine but wanting to be a writer, to finding a calling in medicine, to being a medical student and then neurosurgeon, to becoming a father, to finding out about his terminal diagnosis. He captures humanity in being both a doctor and a patient and in confronting one’s own mortality and questions what makes a virtuous and meaningful life.
