⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood ❤️ Romance 🥰 Such a cute, fun book 🫶🏻 AH’s foray into YA is exactly what I wanted ♟️ Same feel as her other books, but set in the competitive world of chess with younger characters 🙂 The formatting of her books is becoming a little predictable, but I still really love them 😍 Follows Mallory’s journey into the world of competitive chess and her eventual love story with chess champion Sawyer 📖 Page-turner I did not want to put down

Bookstagram made me do it! I usually have a decent enjoyability score for the super-hyped books that float around the bookstaverse. If anything, they are usually entertaining and The Unmaking of June Farrow held up its end of the bargain for the most part. I found the plot points with the “unfraying” of time and timehole loops mildly interesting. I found the execution of said magic/sci-fi parts sub par while I enjoyed the journey of discovering who murdered who much more interesting. I only moderately liked the characters and wished they all felt a little more tangible. The love connection which leaned heavily into the romance was probably not my jam either with the exception of the one very romantic quote I included in the carousel. While the writing had its moments, too frequently it felt clunky and sometimes young-adult like. I’m not sure if listening contributed to that impression as a result of the narrator using a tremulous and clueless voice for the main character. So I guess in summary, it was a mildly entertaining read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Probably not my cup of tea but I didn’t totally hate it either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Publication date: October 2023 Pages: 321 #theunmakingofjunefarrow #adrienneyoung #Nytimesbestseller #citycenterdc #magicalrealism #honestbookreview #booksof2023 #momsthatread #fictionbook #bookreviewblogger #fictionreader #dcbookstagram #goodreadswithaview #allbooked #bookslump

BOOK REVIEW: Leigh Bardugo's "The Familiar" is a mesmerizing historical fantasy novel set against the vibrant backdrop of the Spanish Golden Age. This captivating tale follows Luzia Cotado, a young and determined protagonist, as she navigates the treacherous world of 16th-century Spain, where the boundaries between magic and science are blurred. Luzia's journey begins when she meets Antonio Parez, a disgraced secretary to Spain's king, & the enigmatic Guillen Santangel, an embittered immortal familiar. As Luzia becomes embroiled in their world, she encounters a cast of characters that includes seers, alchemists, holy men, and hucksters. With each turn of the page, she plunges deeper into a realm where magic and science coexist, and the stakes are higher than she ever imagined. Bardugo masterfully weaves historical figures and events into her narrative, transporting readers to a richly detailed and immersive world. The characters are multidimensional and complex, with Luzia being a particularly compelling protagonist. The Spanish Golden Age provides a fascinating backdrop for this story, with its cultural and artistic flourishing serving as a counterpoint to the darkness and intolerance that lurked beneath the surface. Through Luzia's eyes, we witness the intricate dance between power and knowledge, as she navigates the treacherous landscape of royal courts, Inquisitors, and secret societies. The pacing is impeccable, with each revelation building upon the last to create a thrilling narrative that will keep you on the edge of your seat. In short, "The Familiar" is a triumph of historical fantasy literature. With its rich world-building, compelling characters, and haunting prose, this book is sure to captivate fans of the genre and newcomers alike. #TheFamiliar #LeighBardugo #alzcatrazbookreviews #historicalfiction #fantasy #fiction #historicalromance #magic #romance #bibliophile #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #bookish #booklover #bookworm #books #bookaddict #booknerd #instabooks #bookmark #bookaholic #bookgeek #goodreads #goodreadswithaview @lbardugo

“Saffy has a secret. A secret that she is deeply ashamed of. It’s not the fact that she’s a serial killer in her free time. In fact, she’s quite proud of that. After all she’s only killing the bad men. She is making the world a better place. No, her secret is far worse than that. Saffy has a messy, inexplicable, uncontrollable crush. So while she’s busy plotting her next murder, she also has the much harder task of figuring out how to get a boyfriend.” 📖: Bad Men by Julie Mae Cohen MY (mini) REVIEW: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 If you know me, you know I love a smart woman who kills bad men 💅 Add in a lil intrigue, a lil romance (heads up: not spicy!), a lot of vigilante justice… I’m fully sold! Couldn’t put this one down, it was “light” without being corny or dumb, and so, so satisfying. Pick this one up if you love: thrillers that should be read on the beach, women who know what they want and how to get it, and a well-thought-out plan to take matters into your own hands. ✨ QOTD: Whether you’re a thriller lover or not… Lmk your favorite book featuring a badass woman! ⛲️ Rome, Italy 🍨 —- 🏖️ Translated from Italian, this novella’s setting is a dreamy beach trip on the Italian coast following middle aged Lena dealing with some turbulent personal demons. This story is captivating and it’s twisted but it’s frank and honest. It’s an unsettling psychological insight on what women give up to become mothers. The sunny beach setting perfectly lends to the stream of consciousness memories and reflections. The Husbands by Holly Gramazio ✨🧍🏻‍♂️🧍🏼‍♂️🧍🏽‍♂️🧍🏾‍♂️🧍🏿‍♂️✨   Imagine coming home one night to find a man claiming to be your husband, even though you’ve never seen him before in your life! That’s exactly what happens to Lauren in this captivating story. What unfolds next is a series of hilarious and thought-provoking events as Lauren discovers her attic has the magical ability to swap out her husbands like lightbulbs.   This book had me hooked from the very beginning with its intriguing premise. I found the concept of infinite husbands and the questions it raises about choice, identity, and the pursuit of perfection to be incredibly original and engaging. It made me reflect on life’s priorities and the importance we sometimes place on trivial matters. The author’s witty writing style had me laughing out loud at many points and kept me eagerly turning the pages.   The Husbands is not just a fun read, it’s a story that delves deep into the complexities of relationships and personal fulfillment. What I loved most was how it challenged conventional ideas of success and happiness, leaving me pondering long after I finished the last page. ❔What alternate reality or version of your life would you be curious to explore? Would you want to see how different decisions could lead to entirely different outcomes, or are you content with the path you’re currently on?

📖 BOOK REVIEW Just for the Summer By Abby Jimenez ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ At a glance 👀 Romance, humor, dual POV, trauma, close female friendship, family drama, interconnected stand-alone I went into this expecting a light, fun romcom but as usual Jimenez takes it up 10 notches and delivers a swoony, sweet and addicting romance and a story of growth and overcoming trauma that moved me to tears. I deeply related to the MC and was so invested in her journey I would have been happy to just read about that. Then comes the male love interest who’s adorable, funny and observant and I’m done! His family is so cute and I love that he had things he needed to overcome as well. What I really commend about Jimenez is her ability to consistently write fully formed characters without melodrama or barely scratching the surface. Her writing is perfect and the romance and characters feel real every time. The little interconnected bits were so fun too. Another hit and probably my new favorite by Abby Jimenez. ❓If you’re a fan of Abby, what’s your favorite of her books? Or tell me what you’re looking forward to this weekend. TGIF 😀

the rachel incident - caroline o’donoghue 💘 so many coming of age stories can be described as funny, tender and beautifully realistic. but not all of them have the charisma, heart and authenticity of o’donoghue’s whip smart outing, the rachel incident. this novel is another wonderfully bright addition to the canon of literature that centres the realistic experiences of young irish women, that left me emotionally fulfilled and passionately wrapped up in reflective memories of my own journey from teen girlhood into the adult world. o’donoghue carefully takes our anxieties, fears and sprinkles them into some tense, uncomfortable situations and reflects them back at us, as if to say “yeah life can be shit, and some of the decisions we make suck, but that doesn’t mean we cannot transform ourselves into fundamentally good people.” split between past and present, devastating news about one of her teachers leaves the titular rachel in a state of introspection. we travel with her as she recounts her past home in ireland during the economic turn of the celtic tiger and beyond. her friendship with james stands out as a highlight, their banter playful and fun, until an entanglement with the aforementioned teacher leaves her at a pivotal moment. o’donoghue’s writing borders on informal with how smart, funny and self-deprecating rachel’s voice can be. as the novel is written from the perspective of her looking back at the “incident” in question, she is quick to admonish her past self for bad decisions, misread situations whilst also celebrating her loyalty, her morals and her ability to do what she thought was right in some very wrong dilemmas. you can’t help but laugh with her, cry with her and feel so much affinity for the terrible positions she finds herself in. 🏠BOOK REVIEW🏠 Within Arm’s Reach is a family drama focusing on a large Irish Catholic family living in New Jersey whose world is turned upside down with an unexpected pregnancy. I love family dramas and although this one didn’t flow as well or as quickly as I would like, there were certainly elements and character traits that resonated for me, particularly the matriarch of the family, Catherine, as I saw some of my own grandmother in that character. This was Ann Napolitano’s first published book. The writing felt a little choppy and very slow at times but it was still a good story. My rating: 3.5⭐️ I have not read this author’s recent books but if you have, tell me which is your favorite.

🪷 "You meet P E O P L E, you form these bonds that tighten around you, and some of the people you love die. All of them go away, one way or another. You don't carry them around with you over there, you can't. There isn't time, and the memories are too heavy. You'll always have the piece of him that was yours and your time together." — #KristinHannah ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 If you enjoyed reading The Nightingale —also by Kristin Hannah or haven't yet, you have to. One of my all time favorites. She's a talented writer that always lifts me out of my reading slump. Her writing has a knack for catching attention and for taking you in the streets of German occupation in France and now, amidst the hospital mass casualty of Dak To, Vietnam. What a treat. It's good to be back into reading and with the looks of it, reaching my #2024GoodreadsChallenge earlier than expected. Also, I've been hanging out with my #Kindle more these days. It's just more convenient since I've been switching from one book to another lately.

Susie Luo’s debut novel, Paper Names, is a multi-perspective journey, with a structure alternating between our three main characters: Tony, Tammy, and Oliver. Tony’s pursuit of the American dream, Tammy’s struggle with parental expectations, and Oliver’s hidden truths intersect in a tale of hope, ambition, and tragedy; with each character’s journey provide insight into the complexities of identity and the immigrant experience. Paper Names is a contemplative, reflective narrative with minimal action, its emotional depth and rich character development more than compensate. Admittedly, the non-linear storytelling may not appeal to all readers, but for those who enjoy character-driven novels, it’s a rewarding experience. While the writing was straightforward and often beautiful, some aspects of the story left us feeling a bit unsettled. The rushed nature of the second half, particularly with Oliver’s inclusion, detracted from the overall impact of the narrative. Oliver’s character, while perhaps intended to add depth, felt out of place and ultimately muddled the plot. Despite these drawbacks, Paper Names still shines in its exploration of themes such as intergenerational trauma, privilege, and the immigrant experience. The dynamics between Tony and Tammy are particularly compelling, showcasing the complexities of family relationships and cultural identity. Overall, we recommend Paper Names for its thought-provoking themes and moments of emotional resonance, but be prepared for some loose ends. . . . #OWCBookRecs #BooksOfInstagram #Bookstagram #whattoreadnext #BookReview #CurrentlyReading #BookClub #bookstagramcats #BookRecommendations #CatsAndBooks #BooksAndCats #PawsAndPages #bookstacat #catswhoread #catswhoreadbooks #GoodreadsWithAView #Riotgrams #ReadingWithCats #LiteraryCats #aapiheritagemonth #aapibooks #aapiauthors

Happy Pub Week to Summers at the Saint by Mary Kay Andrews! 💕☀️ This book had me hooked from the start with its mix of romance and mystery set in a charming beach hotel. Traci Eddings, the owner of the iconic St. Cecelia hotel in Georgia, is determined to restore it to its former glory. As she faces staff shortages, financial woes, and sabotage from her own family, Traci enlists a quirky crew of summer hires to help turn things around. However, the discovery of an old hotel tragedy and a recent mysterious death throw unexpected challenges her way. The characters in this book are wonderfully crafted, each with their own motives and secrets. The plot kept me guessing with its unexpected twists and turns. While the ending tied up some loose ends predictably, I still found it satisfying. Overall, a delightful summer read that blends humor, drama, and heartwarming moments. The audiobook narration was great. After reading Summers at the Saint, I just want to be sipping cocktails and soaking up the sun at a beach hotel. Thank you Macmillan Audio, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley for the gifted copy. ❔If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you choose to be?

Jhumpa Lahiri - Whereabouts (2018/2021 tr. Jhumpa Lahiri) ★★★☆☆ An unnamed woman moves through the unnamed Italian city where she lives, noticing details of life around her… A quiet book, without a plot beyond glimpses of life told through vignettes, it should have been right up my alley. It was enjoyable enough in the moment, and it’s refreshing to read a middle-aged, contentedly single MC, but there was something missing for me, the novel lacked…soul. I’ve been wondering if it’s related to Lahiri’s decision to write in Italian, a language I understand she has gained fluency in relatively recently. It’s an impressive endeavour, but I’m not convinced by the choice - fluency is one thing, but truly feeling the depths and nuance of a language in your bones and wielding it accordingly is something else - it can be done, but the lack of spark suggests perhaps Lahiri isn’t quite there yet. I am keenly aware that I express myself differently across languages, not just due to my own varying levels of eloquence but because I think differently in different languages (and I’m not alone in that), including my two “native” languages, and the framework of a language inevitably affects how we tell a story. Or, perhaps something was lost in translation, though that would be unfortunate as Lahiri translated her own novel. All of that said, I haven’t read any of Lahiri’s other work (though I am keen to), so it’s hard to draw conclusions - is it the language thing or is it simply a topic that Lahiri couldn’t quite bring to life? Anyway, that rambling tangent doesn’t really tell you much about the book… I don’t actually have much else to say, other than I found it occasionally verged on dull, and the character, her life and the setting have failed to leave an impression. In fact, I came out of the book more interested in the question of choosing which language to write in, than any aspect of the book itself (as you might have gleaned). Quiet glimpses of a middle-aged, single woman’s life in an unnamed Italian town, enjoyable enough but not particularly memorable. Bought from @booketybookbooks Have you read this one? Any thoughts on the language question? 🦈

She faced those demons, she reasons to herself, so that Corinne would never know they existed. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros -while it may not need introductions- is a fantasy novel set in a war college for dragon riders that presents an engaging blend of romance and action, making it a very compelling read that kept me hooked from start to finish. While it’s not without its flaws and it’s full of clichés, the fast-paced plot and addictive narrative made it difficult for me to put down. I’ve seen many readers arguing that this should not fall into the romantasy genre and that the weight of the worldbuilding is much bigger but, personally, I don’t agree and I definitely believe the romance is the main focus of the story, overshadowing the worldbuilding elements. While we get some glimpses of worldbuilding in the beginning of the book as Violet remembers her preparation to be in the Scribe Quadrant, these seem to fade away as the story progresses, leaving the world feeling underdeveloped, quite inconsistent and tbh just badly crafted. Also, this relentlessness does not allow for much character development and most of them are quite flat and unrealistic. Despite this, the strength of Fourth Wing lies in its gripping action sequences and the undeniable chemistry between the main characters. The author creates intense and heart-pounding scenes that keep you interested and eager to see how the relationship between Violet and Xaden unfolds and which secrets will be revealed. Overall, Fourth Wing may not be perfect, but its addictive plot and engaging narrative make it a worthwhile read for fans of romance, fantasy and dragons. If you are curious to know what all the hype is about I’d definitely recommend picking this one up and it will keep you entertained and on the edge of your seat. However, the second part of the series, Iron Flame just did not click with me; and all of the flaws that were initially covered up by the action and the romance resurfaced in this book and it felt like I was rereading the same scenes over and over, so I ended up DNfing :( Let me know if you have read these and what you think of them, and if you’ll be continuing the series with the next book coming in 2025! 🤓

I suspect most people outside of Israel have never heard of Yigal Amir. However, his assassination of Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin on November 4, 1995 changed history and made reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians much less likely. Dan Ephron’s book Killing a King: The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin and the Remaking of Israel is an in depth look into this event and the people connected to it. It reads like a novel with engaging characters. In addition to Rabin, we learn about Benjamin Netanyahu, Shimon Peres, as well as names of people far less known to most non-Israelis such as the mysterious Shabak agent Avishai Raviv and Baruch Goldstein. Current security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir even makes a brief appearance. I noted this line as well: American journalists … emphasized the role Americans played in the settlement enterprise, not only in Hebron but throughout the West Bank and Gaza. Though settlers made up fewer than 3 percent of Israelis, 10 percent of the settlers were American-born. Ephron’s book is worth your time. #bookstagram #scottlivesinjerseynow #picturesofbooks #books #goodreadswithaview #literature #literaryfiction #instabooks #currentlyreading #kindle #libby #library #junkjournal @journal_as_you_wish #israel

I want so badly to visit and explore every inch of PEI and experience everything that was described in this book. The way this author writes is poetic. She invokes emotions lie deep within your soul which makes this story very heartfelt. You can’t help but not only fall for Felix and Lucy, but for every character in this book. I think what I enjoyed most is that this author explores the different kinds of loves that people have in their lives and how the term “true love” carries many different meanings. Sometimes “greatest loves are not always romances,” they can easily be non-romantic relationships, dreams, or locations. It’s very rare for me to think that a book is perfect from start to finish, but this book is beyond perfect and deserve all the stars and praise. This isn’t your typical romance book, but instead is so much more and honestly is the best book by this author. Thank you to Berkley and NetGalley for the ARC ❓What is your most memorable vacation?

Maybe it says a lot about me - maybe it doesn’t… 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ My new go to “lunch” spot is folding down the seats in my car and laying down to read. The only problem is that I sometimes it’s so nice out I just want to take a nap. 📚📚📚 I’m really trying my best to sit outside and soak up the sun when I can. SMASH! OR! PASS! but FIRST - save this post for when you need a new read. I’ve been going through uhhhhh a lot and I’ve been kind of cruising through my books this year to DISASSOCIATE (as one does) But wanted to share my March 2024 recap with a bit of a twist. If you’ve somehow never heard of smash or pass, here’s the key and how you can interpret these recommendations 😂 SMASH | please read, so great. PASS | strong dislike, don’t bother. OKAY | wouldn’t SMASH but wouldn’t recommend against. Extra thanks and a tag to my favorite authors from March: @barbara.kingsolver @jerichobrown1 @amytintera @marie.helenebertino @pkennedywrites Let me know if you’ve read any of these ❤️

Mentally here ☀️🌴🐬 I inadvertently took a little month-long break on here but I’m honestly not regretting it. While this space is usually so fun and welcoming, I feel like lately when I would hop on there was tons of gossip and some negativity and I just needed a hiatus. I have been doing lots of reading still, but have been less focused on reviews and my Goodreads challenge, which has been really nice. I also spent a week in Florida and seriously wish I could run right back there and sit on the beach with a good book 😂 I’ve read some really great ARCs lately that I’m dying to talk about, so stay tuned for those. I’m currently reading THE GOD OF THE WOODS by Liz Moore and currently listening to BYE, BABY by Carola Lovering. Recent reads: Ready or Not by Cara Bastone ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🎧 Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Vampires of El Norte ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wild About You by Kaitlyn Hill ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Prime Time Romance by Kate Robb ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 The Idea of You by Robinne Lee ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Funny Story by Emily Henry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hope everyone’s having a great day 🩵 and if you ever need a break, don’t feel guilty, just do it! 👏

Recent Reading: Hit Parade by @lawbloc Keller is a professional assassin or hit man. However, very little of the narrative is about the actual business of killing.

>> SAINT ANYTHING << Author: Sarah Dessen Rating: ⛴️⛴️⛴️ The intricacies of Sydney’s family dynamic showed how complex family and friendships can be when tested. There is an honesty that is felt within this book and the truth, despite how I disagreed with many actions of certain characters, that felt realistic for the situation Sydney was in. This is a coming of age story about coming to your own and carving your own path. Not only was the growth of Sydney though this book was inspiring, but there was growth with the side characters as well. I will say this story is more than just a YA novel, but rather a story meant to move and inspire in the face of tragedy. And I was not prepared for this when picking this as my read, so my 3 start review was more of a reflection of my mood for it than how well written the story is. ❓Are you a mood reader?

For years we watched and heard about Syrian refugees. We watched them try to escape their homeland. We watched them drown in the Mediterranean. We watched countries argue over who gets them. We watched people fear them. But we never got a glimpse inside Syria to meet the actual humans going through such violence and torture and fear to understand why. This beautiful story will show you that why. Salama and Kenan are only teens when their worlds are ripped apart and they had to grow up fast, suffering through the PTSD brought on by war and losing their families. Their story is touching and heartbreaking. Katouh gives us a personal view into the lives of the Syrian people and what happened when the revolution turned their world upside down. #booksofinstagram #reading #libbyapp #bookworm #goodreads #bookpiles #instareads #booknerds #currentlyreading #goodreadswithaview #bookstagram #bookaddict #bookish #igbooks #bookaholic #avidreader #goodreadschallenge2023 #reviewongoodreads @reesesbookclub @goodreads @oceansidenylibrary #syria

🎶 “There’s a lot of people in town that I bestow upon my fakest smiles, scandal does funny things to pride but brings lovers closer. —But Daddy I Love Him, Taylor Swift 🎶 . . . I apparently don’t read enough forbidden-type romances but luckily I’ve read the Matched series, which works great for this recommendation. Matched follows a society who tells people what to do, what to read, what to believe, & who to marry. The main character is made to question who her perfect match is & starts to doubt her society’s way of existing. If you can’t guess who she chooses, it wasn’t the one her society told her too… . . 🎶 But Daddy I Love Him 📖 Matched trilogy . . 🎶 I just learned these people only raise you to cage you . 🎶 They slammed the door on my whole world, the one thing I wanted . 🎶 Soon enough the elders had convened down at the city hall, “Stay away from her” the saboteurs protested too much. . 🎶 God save the most judgmental creeps who say they want what’s best for me, sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I’ll never see . 🎶 I’ll tell you something right now I’d rather burn my whole life down, than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning. . . . —TAGS— #ReadingInTheWeb #BooksTaylorsVersion #TTPD #TheTorturedPoetsDepartment #TaylorNation #GoodreadsWithAView #TheErasTour #ButDaddyILoveHim #BooksAsOutfits #AllyCondie #MatchedTrilogy #MatchedBook #PenguinTeen #TSTheErasTour #LoveAndPoetry #TaylorsVersion #FromTheVault #TorturedPoetsDepartment #BooksAndMusic #BooksAndPoetry #Goodreads #YAdystopian #DystopianBook #DystopianBooks

Achilles was the greatest Greek warrior, sent to the Trojan War to meet his fate. The story is ancient history. Told from the eyes of Achilles’ lover and confidante, Patroclus, this Greek tragedy sings in Miller’s hands. Anyone who picks up this book probably knows already that they are all doomed and that enduring sadness seeps into the book; you don’t want to reach the climax, because you know it will be horrible, but you can’t wait to get it over with, either. So often we objectify heroes and forget that they are people. The Song of Achilles is a reminder of the pain, love, and triumphs along the way--something the original ancient Greek myths were great at telling. This book is beautifully written but very, very sad, and that made it both enjoyable and hard to read--so of course I loved it. This is very much an epic journey. #jillreviewsthings #books #bookstagram #read #readersofinstagram #reading #bookrecommendations #bookstagrammer #booklover #bookreview #bookish #bookclub #readingjournal #readingisfun #readingforfun #bookreviews #booklovers #bookcommunity #GoodreadsWithAView #songofachilles #theiliad #madelinemiller #greekmythology #epic #hero

The It Girl by Ruth Ware is a dark academia surrounding a (un)solved murder. Hannah’s roommate is found dead in their room. She alone provides evidence that puts April’s killer behind bars — John Neville, a creepy porter who’s done some questionable things during Hannah’s time at Oxford. A decade passes when Neville dies of a heart attack in prison and a journalist approaches Hannah claiming evidence of Neville’s innocence. Hannah begins questioning what she saw and if she helped put an innocent man in prison. *dun dun DUUUN* I liked the short chapters, the dual timelines, and the mystery around April’s killer. This kept me guessing until the end. I feel like I always say that 😆 but it’s true! You’d think as much as I read, I’d see the endings coming. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope that never goes away.

🎶 “You sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days, and I’m just getting color back into my face. I’m just mad as hell cause I loved this place.” —So Long, London; Taylor Swift 🎶 . . . Remember how a couple of days ago I said some of the recommendations would be a stretch? Well today is one of those days I was referring to. So Long, London is one of the songs I really struggled with to find a book with a similar vibe, story, or theme. . . Now maybe is because I had just finished a rewatch of The Haunting of Bly Manor, but I couldn’t get the show out of my head for this song. While the context of the song does not match where I was initially associating the song, after the fact I feel like this works for Peter and Rebecca. The had a tumultuous relationship & I really feel like this song represents their story together and apart. . . . 🎶 So Long, London 📖📺 The Haunting of Bly Manor (Turn of the Screw) . 🎶 I saw in my mind fairy lights through the mist. I kept calm and carried the weight of the rift, pulled him in tighter each time he was drifting away. . 🎶 I left all I knew, you left me at the house by the Heath, I stopped CPR, after all it’s no use. The spirit was gone, we would never come to. . 🎶 And you say I abandoned the ship, but I was going down with it. My white knuckle dying grip holding tight to your quiet resentment and my friends said it isn’t right to be scared. . 🎶 So how much sad did you think I had, did you think I had in me? How much tragedy? . . . —TAGS— #ReadingInTheWeb #BooksTaylorsVersion #SoLongLondon #TTPD #TheTorturedPoetsDepartment #TaylorNation #LoveAndPoetry #TaylorsVersion #FromTheVault #TorturedPoetsDepartment #BooksAndMusic #BooksAndPoetry #Goodreads #GoodreadsWithAView #TheErasTour #TSTheErasTour #BlyManor #TheHauntingOfBlyManor #TheHaunting #TurnOfTheScrew

#BookReview: Invisible Child by Andrea Elliott Genre: Non-Fiction Rating: 5/5 Review: Do you know those non-fiction books, which read so much like fiction that you have to remind yourself this is a real story? Invisible Child is exactly like that. The book by Andrea Elliot, an investigative journalist at The New York Times, tells the story of a homeless family in New York City, focussing on one member, an 11-year-old girl named Dasani. Throughout their journey of eight years, they go from living in a homeless shelter to entering the foster care system and eventually being adopted and reunited. Elliot’s writing is incredibly powerful, and she lays bare the family’s struggles, even going so far as to include herself in the narrative at times. She uses their story to highlight the failings of the system and to show how racism is closely tied to poverty. From the education sector to the foster care and the legal sector, she exposes the brokenness of the system in a way that is both informative and heartbreaking. The one thing that struck me was how mature Dasani was for her age. This was probably because of the challenges and responsibilities that came with being the eldest among her siblings. Unfortunately, even with teachers and therapists working to help her, she was not able to unlearn bad habits and break free of negative patterns of behavior.

Emily Habeck - Shark Heart (2023) ★★★★☆ A few weeks after marrying Wren, Lewis receives a rare diagnosis: due to a genetic mutation, he will mostly retain his consciousness and mind, but his body will progressively transform into that of a great white shark… I will admit that, given the premise, I went into this book with very low expectations - as a former shark scientist, I was fully prepared to be very annoyed (not helped by the cover, which is pretty and all, but the wrong species of shark). Yet I enjoyed this book and actually found it quite moving. For a start, Habeck has clearly actually read up on basic shark biology. In fact, the most ridiculous part of the whole book is one of the characters deciding to teach themselves to scuba dive on their own after ordering a bunch of gear off the internet, knowing nothing about it and without taking a single lesson (PLEASE don’t do this at home, kids). The story requires a suspension of disbelief from the start - the mutations make no biological sense and there’s no explanation as to why they happen, it’s just the way it is - if you’re unable to just accept the premise or hate magical realism, this is probably not the book for you. That said, the lack of explanation actually made the book stronger for me, even though I normally like explanations - Habeck isn’t trying to bring in a point about some biochemical catastrophe or genetic modification or whatever, it’s very much about the people dealing with the situation. So yes, Lewis is turning into a shark, but ultimately this is a moving story of human nature, of facing the unknown when you don’t really have control over the situation (whatever that situation might be), and the various ways that humans react to that. When something happens that drastically alters how we pictured our lives playing out, how do we answer the inevitable “why me?!?”, how do we step up (or not) and how do we grieve a life that won’t be happening. An absurd premise which turns into a surprisingly moving story of love, facing an unknown you have no control over and mourning the life you expected. Borrowed from #TaupoLibrary Have you read this one? 🦈

🎶 “Just to do experiments on, tell me I was the chosen one, show me that this world is bigger than us.” —Down Bad, Taylor Swift 🎶 . . . This book has a lot of imagery of extra-terrestrials & outpace and I couldn’t think of one sci-fi book to pair with this song, so I present a YA dystopian rec which is a close second! 💜 . I have read one and one book only from Wattpad, and that was The Famoux. I logged in every Friday to read the new chapter that the author had written & was dedicated to see where the story would go. The slowest of slow burns in the original, unpublished novel was iconic & the tension between the two main characters has yet to be replicated for me! The published novel was edited down from its impressive 800 pages, but still had the heart of its source material. If you want to read a book reminiscent of The Selection series in terms of being a similar type of dystopian book, then this is a book I’d recommend to fill that void! . . . 🎶 Down Bad 📖 The Famoux . 🎶 “‘What if I can’t have him’ ‘I might just die, it would make no difference.’” —Emeray & Chapter having to stay away from one another . 🎶 “In a field in my same old town, that somehow seems so hollow now.” —Emeray leaving her town to go to The Fishbowl to join The Famoux . 🎶 “I loved your hostile takeovers, encounters closer and closer.” —Emeray & Chapter, again . . . —TAGS— #ReadingInTheWeb #BooksTaylorsVersion #DownBadTaylorSwift #DownBad #TorturedPoetsDepartment #BooksAndMusic #BooksAndPoetry #Goodreads #GoodreadsWithAView #TheErasTour #TSTheErasTour #TTPD #TheTorturedPoetsDepartment #TaylorNation #LoveAndPoetry #TaylorsVersion #FromTheVault #TheFamoux #Famoux #HatersMakeYouFamoux #WattpadPublishing #WattpadBooks #DystopianBooks #YAdystopian #KassandraTate #TheClassix #BooksAsOutfits

If you were to list some of the important post World War II American writers you might list Bellow, Malamud, Roth, Updike, Salinger, Heller, James Michener, E.B. White. If you were to focus on short stories you might list Ray Bradbury, Isaac Bashevis Singer, John Cheever, as well as Ann Beattie and Joy Williams. Let me suggest that Grace Paley belongs on that list. Here is what Joyce Carol Oates said about her: How aptly named: Grace Paley. For “grace” is perhaps the most accurate, if somewhat poetic, term to employ in speaking of this gifted writer who has concentrated on short, spare fiction through her career of nearly five decades. First published in 1959 with the slender volume The Little Disturbances of Man, Grace Paley immediately drew an audience of readers who were not only admiring but loving. Her subsequent collections of stories—Enormous Changes at the Last Minute (1974) and Later the Same Day (1985)—confirmed Paley’s reputation as a lyricist of the domestic life, a poet in prose whose ear for the Jewish-American vernacular suggests a kinship with her older contemporaries Isaac Bashevis Singer, Bernard Malamud, and Saul Bellow. And here is what George Saunders said about Paley: Grace Paley is one of the great writers of voice of the last century. There’s an experience one has reading a stylist like her that has to do with how rich in truth the phrase-or-sentence-level bursts are and how quickly they follow upon one another. An image or phrase finds you, pleases you with its wit or vividness, shoehorns open your evolving vision of the fictive world, and before that change gets fully processed, here comes another. You find yourself having trouble believing this much wit is washing over you. A world is appearing before you that is richer and stranger than you could possibly have imagined, and that world gains rooms and vistas and complications with every phrase. What you are experiencing is intimate contact with an extraordinary intelligence, which causes the pleasant sensation of one’s personality receding and being replaced by the writer’s consciousness.

🎶 “And I’ll tell you that he runs because he loves me. Cause you should’ve seen him when he first saw me.” —My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys, Taylor Swift 🎶 . . . I’ve realized for a few of these prompts that I am starting to associate songs with some of my favorite TV shows as well as books, so I think I might do a couple TV show recs for this album for a book recommendation that I don’t fully love. . I took the interpretation for this song as someone who is sabotages a good thing. That immediately made me think of Damon and Elena from The Vampire Diaries. I’ve seen the comparison of them made with I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) which I also think fits based on how you interpret either of the songs. . . . 🎶 My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys 📖📺 The Vampire Diaries 🎶 “There was danger in the heat of my touch, he saw forever so he smashed it up. Hardly poolside reading, but I did lug it along on my trip last week because I was determined to finish this book soon. I began reading it shortly after the October 7 attack and finished it today, in the midst of unprecedented protests on US college campuses. It is unusual for me to spend this much time with one book, but there is a lot to absorb here and it cannot be done quickly if you don’t have in depth knowledge of the Israeli-Palestinian history. During this 6 month span I have heard from both Israeli and Palestinian supporters, but they all seem to have major missing gaps that Thomas Friedman fills in this book. I believe it is nearly impossible for an American to truly “choose a side” if they never experienced day to day life in this region. We cannot assume to know what it is impossible to know. But Friedman tries to explain it in a way that fills in those gaps. If you want to try to truly understand what is going on in the Middle East today, go back on a 40+ year journey through this book that gives you a front row seat to what the news, our government and our history books aren’t showing you. #booksofinstagram #reading #libbyapp #bookworm #goodreads #bookpiles #instareads #booknerds #currentlyreading #goodreadswithaview #bookstagram #bookaddict #bookish #igbooks #bookaholic #avidreader #goodreadschallenge2023 #reviewongoodreads @reesesbookclub @goodreads @oceansidenylibrary #israel #palestine🇵🇸 #protest #israelipalestinianconflict #frombeiruttojerusalem

QUESTION: Did any of your posts ever just disappear from Instagram? I posted this at least a week ago. This week, I looked and the post was gone. This was such a good read. Not only the characters but also the historical backdrop just transported me back to 1944. Kate Thoompson brought the London tube tunnels to life. As you read, you feel as though you're in the tunnels living and working with the 5,000 inhabitants, you're above ground on the allotments growing plants, you're in the bibliobus delivering books to factory girls and you're suffering the aftermath of V2 bombs. The suffering, the losses that each character has and is enduring is evident with their words and actions, yet even with all the devastation, you have the everyday heros, doing their part in the little wartime library, tunnel, throughout the tunnels, above ground in the ambulances. Man's inhumanity may be around them, but so is the reservoir of humanity. I loved the strength of the characters and the power they found in going against the wrongs. If you love history, love stories about written words and the power of resilience, then read this book. #bloggerstyle #inspirational #bookstagram #goodreadschallenge #motivationalquotes #courage #solitude #encouragement #photography #nature #bookstagrammer #blogger #writer #journey #happiness #joy #peace #love #books #reading #broadway #blog #read #writingcommunity #writing #epilepsyawareness #epilepsy #goodreadswithaview

🎶 “I laughed in your face and said ‘You’re not Dylan Thomas, I’m not Patti SmithThis ain’t the Chelsea Hotel, we’rе modern idiots.’” —The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor Swift 🎶 . . . When trying to think of a pretentious character who’s into writing/poetry/books, the first person to pop up into my mind was Joe from “YOU”! I also think Beck could qualify for this song-to-book recommendation, so some of the lyrics can tie to her as well: . 🎶 “But you’re in self-sabotage mode, throwing spikes down on the road. But I’ve seen this episode and still loved the show. Who else decodes you?” —Joe feeling like he understands Beck & is the perfect person for her . 🎶 “And who’s gonna hold you like me? Priya Hein - Riambel (2023) ★★★★☆ 15-year-old Noemi must leave school to work for the wealthy De Grandbourg family - the difference between their wealthy suburb and her slum is stark, and she finds herself dreaming of an alternative future for herself… At 151 pages, this is a tiny book that packs a punch - Hein touches on Mauritian history but especially shows us the racist legacy of that history, colonialism and slavery. Slavery might have been abolished, but the extreme inequality remains, and a sense of ownership and lack of consequences lingers amongst the privileged whites. Plus ça change… this is not a story of hope. I enjoyed the book and loved the recipes tucked within the pages - they made me salivate, and food does really give the feel of a place - but the brief, snapshot-style chapters didn’t quite come together cohesively enough for me to truly love the story. That and the intensity of the teenage angst - it was well-written and believable (and frustrating to read), but, to be perfectly honest, I simply do not have the energy for teenage angst at the moment (which is definitely a case of it’s me, not the book). An atmospheric coming-of-age story anchored within the racist legacy of Mauritius’ colonial history, told in snapshots. Have you read Riambel? 🦈 PS - This cover 😍 The blue trees in the back, which I’ve always called Traveller’s Trees, are one of my favourite trees - they store rain water in the criss-cross part (can you tell I’m not a botanist? 😂) and you can pull the leaf stems downwards to access it (hence the name)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead 🌎 Historical Fiction 🏆 Pulitzer Prize winner! ✍🏻 This book is SO beautifully and thoughtfully written 🔦 CW has a knack for taking tough subject matter and shining a light on it 🧐 His writing gives humanity to our most inhumane thoughts and actions 🚂 Follows a young slave, Cora, on her escape from a Georgia plantation via The Underground Railroad 🔀 Changes perspectives and timelines to give the full picture 📖 Page-turner I could not put down 👍🏻 Highly recommend! 📺 I’m definitely going to watch the TV adaptation

Recent Reading: Hole in my Life @jgantos is best known for his picture books like Joey Pigza or his middle grade novels like Dead End in Norvelt. Hole in My Life is a memoir describing his life in his final years of high school, his involvement in criminal activity and his incarceration in federal prison. I thought it was a book worth reading. #bookstagram #scottlivesinjerseynow #picturesofbooks #books #goodreadswithaview #literature #literaryfiction #instabooks #currentlyreading #kindle #libby #library #junkjournal #firstlines #prison #middlegradebooks @journal_as_you_wish

𝙱𝙾𝙾𝙺 𝚁𝙴𝚅𝙸𝙴𝚆 Meg Shaffer - The lost story 𝙰𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚋𝚘𝚘𝚔 Years and years ago two little boys disappeared in Red Crow state forest for half a year. When they finally returned they couldn’t explain where they had been and how they survived, and Rafe didn’t remember a thing of all these months at all. Jeremy didn’t speak to Rafe anymore after their return and since then made a living finding lost children; somehow he always knew where to find them. Then some day a girl named Emilie asks Jeremy for help since she just learned she has a big sister who went missing in the same forest… The only way to find her is to join forces and go into the forest together. Rafe doesn’t want to have anything to do with Jeremy since he refused to tell him what happened in the forest. When Jeremy promises he’ll be able to show Rafe all he doesn’t remember, they decide to go… 𝙼𝚢 𝚝𝚑𝚘𝚞𝚐𝚑𝚝𝚜 𝚊𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚋𝚘𝚘𝚔 I loved The wishing game and was so happy to be allowed to read Meg’s new novel, and it did not disappoint… What an whimsical story of hope, fantasy, friendship and family, and lots of humor. The story is so well thought of and I loved the writing style, it has a lot of humor in it. I loved the little hint to Clock Island in the end 😂. The story deals with abuse and a father not accepting his son is gay, and the way the story ends in this respect was very beautiful. Loved the last sentences too: “Since fairy tales have happy endings, this means one of two things. Either this isn’t a fairy tale… Or it’s only the beginning.” I can highly recommend! It will be out on July 16 in the US and July 18 in the UK. I read The Soulmate Equation and The True Love Experiment back-to-back. Shout-out to @almirakbazoinkles for the heads up to read TSE first! Both are cute, but I adored TTLE. I love Fizzy — she’s a romance writer, unapologetically herself, hilarious and honest. The chemistry and banter between Fizzy and Connor is *chefs kiss* My favorite part was the ending 😍 It was all so perfect. One of my favorite reads of the year.
