Whether you’re a weightlifter, or a powerlifter, simply performing the classic lifts may only get you so far. Of course executing big compound lifts like the squat, bench press, and deadlift will give you a lot of bang for your buck, but it also leaves plenty of easy gains on the table. Even when strength is the primary goal, training with a variety of exercises has shown to elicit greater gains in not only hypertrophy, but in 1RM squat performance when compared to squatting alone (Fonseca et al., 2014). Assistance exercises strengthen supporting smaller muscle groups, helps address muscular imbalances and improves all round strength making you a more robust lifter. How To: 1) “RDL” the weight into place and get anchored into the hamstrings. This keeps you balanced and takes stress off the lower back. Half Pull Up/Chin Up is a great exercise for: ✅ elimination of weak points in the upper part of the Pull Up/Chin Up ✅ for beginners who are not yet able to do a pull up/chin up on the bar, because this way they can more easily get a feeling of the weight of their body, and the exercise is much easier to perform than an ordinary chin up ✅ overloading, which enables an increase in strength in the exercise ❗ It is important to lower the body only to the point where the elbow is at an angle of 90° and not lower, as the goal is to improve the movement from the middle to the top. 👉To start, perform 3-6 repetitions, 3-5 sets. WEAK POINT 💀 WEDNESDAY’S Weak point Wednesday’s are all about movements you can utilize to strengthen weak points in your lifts. Today we have @mporriello warming up for the pin squat. The pin squat can be used to correct: 🔹Not getting to depth Sometimes people lack confidence at the bottom of their squats. Or they simply cheat the depth because it’s challenging. Utilizing pin squats can give the lifter a safety net if they drop the weight, but also give them feedback if they are truly at depth or not. 🔹Falling forward During a pin squat the lifter is forced to keep their hips beneath the bar. If they let their body tip forward odds are the bar isn’t going to come off the pins as the weight gets heavier. 🔹Weakness at the bottom Pin squats require a slight pause at the bottom of the lift on the pins. Forcing the body to stay in this position creates strength and confidence in this position. Pin squats can be a great tool to have in your arsenal of exercises. If any of the above weak points are areas that you currently struggle in, give these a try.

*boulder shoulders* . Little bit of my old school passion here. For most of my training life its been unadulterated bodybuilding. Isolated movements and muscles, mid range reps trying to find the burn. And I always try and throw in some isolation work to assist my bigger lifts now I've 'progressed' onto #crossfit . Anyways, #lateralraise is a staple bodybuilding exercise for bigger delts. I love them, and my body seems to respond very favourably to them. BUT how many people perform this movement correctly?! ANSWER - very few. . Typical 'bros' pick up far too much weight and fling them around like theyre trying to take off. You can develop the same stimulus and therefore results with a much lighter weight and strict form . SO 🔸️sit down 🔸️relax your traps 🔸️draw your scapulas back and into your spine 🔸️slight bend in elbow 🔸️lift slow . Training delts is a great opportunity to develop the mind body connection alot of trainers and athletes talk about. ULTIMATE SHOULDER STABILITY- The bottom up press is an absolute game changer when it comes to shoulder stability and grip strength, there are few movements that come close to it for upper body training and core activation. -step by step * hold a kettlebell upside down by the handle with your arm bent and close to your body * Get your shoulder set into a good position by pulling them both back and down * Brace hard and slowly press the kettlebell upwards keeping the bottom towards the sky * Squeeze hard to avoid the kettlebell from coming out of position * When your arm is locked out bring it back to the start position and restart * Repeat for a total of 3 reps When your bottom up press gets better your overall shoulder training soon follows. What I love about the bottom up press is that you cannot do it wrong - if your shoulder isn't strong enough or your core strength isn't up to it, the kettlebell won't move. Ideally you really want to find where you struggle and where you fail to set your own goals, obviously don't drop a kettlebell on your head but if you do these too light you just don't get the real benefits from them, if you're able to say that it's easy then you haven't tried heavy enough for yourself to get a true test. Long term goals for guys with this is 3 reps with 24kg and for girls 3 reps with 18kg. This isn't to say that you can't push past those weights also but if you can press or hold a ton of weight above your head but can barely bottom up press 8kg then chances are you are cheating in some way and this pattern in my experience has been a common issue among lifters with shoulder pain. Any advanced lifter I have tested with no shoulder issues has always been able to do bottom up presses with no issues even if they have never tried them before. Speed Work🏃‍♂️🏋️‍♀️ Speed work is where you lift light loads for few reps with the aim of moving the load as quickly as possible. Sometimes speed work can be useful for bodybuilders or powerlifters. Generally though it is more beneficial for intermediate to advanced lifters, we are talking people who have trained 5 plus years specificially for strenth and / or hypertrophy. Why might you do speed work? Training Variation As you train for longer, changing the pace of training sessions for short periods can help to re-energise and re-enthuse a lifter back into more specifc training. Speed work can also be used to train an aspect of movement that is not commonly completed during specifc training that increases movement varaibility. Therefore, increasing the lifters resilience and could improve chances of injury. Weak Point Training If you are someone who struggles to get speed off the floor in the deadlift or use the bounce out the whole in a squat. Speed training could be a way to enhace those specific regions of the lift. Technique Resilience Speed is a great way to challenge technique of an exercise without having to add the extra load which could produce more fatigue to recover from. Speed challenges the co-ordination of lifts, so could be used solidify a technqiue change. However, this only really applies when you are using multiples of bodyweight in exercises. Phase Potentiation A fancy way of saying that you vary the goal of a block of training to allow adaptation to contiue to occur. So if you haev been training strength or hypertrophy for a long time, adding in a period of speed work which will probably be enough to atleast maintain your strength or muscle mass but may re-sensitise you physically and mentally to the more specific training blocks again. Before you ADD exercises to your training program, ASK yourself these questions! 👇 . 1. Do I NEED this exercise? Or am I gaining on it already? . Example: If you’re already doing Accommodating Resistance One Arm Chin-Up work, the strength of your Biceps Curls is probably going up for free. Adding MORE biceps work is probably not needed. 😉 . 2. Will I be able to OBJECTIVELY measure extra gains from this exercise? Or is it going to be based on what I feel? . Example: If you follow up Single Leg Squats with Jefferson Curls, you’ll gain pike mobility that you OBJECTIVELY know didn’t come from the squats! (Unless you squat REALLY weird.. 😂). But if you add Shoulder Presses to Handstand Pushup work, you can’t tell if the Shoulder Press is ADDING more gains or just SUBTRACTING gains 👎 . 3. Is this going to INCREASE the time I spend training? Or DECREASE the time I spent training? . Example: If you SWAP an exercise for one that works better, you can end up SAVING time. But if you constantly add, you’ll end up spending more and more. 🙅🏽‍♂️ . Notice how all these questions are objective and measurable. You can TEST them rather than relying on feeling. THAT is how you stay “sucker-free” and stop your FOMO from adding more and more exercises to your training! . ASK before you ADD and board the Gain Train! And check the IG stories for more!

HPT Athlete - @muryjkrebs - demonstrating a variation of the Glute Ham Raise (also called the Nordic hamstring curl). This is a challenging exercise that works the entire lower posterior chain – basically your #calves, #hamstrings, and #glutes. This is one of the best ways to train #eccentric and #concentric hamstring work for athletes, general fitness, and competitive power and weightlifters. • This was Mary Jane's 5th and last set for the day on these and I wanted to really challenge her and force her to keep herself in a good position. Not challenging this exercise is one of the worst mistakes one can make. We have gotten rid of a lot of knee pain from when Mary Jane first started training here and also really added in some significant improvements to her powerlifting. We train this assistance exercise very hard! • Glute Ham Raise vs Leg Curl Machine in the gym. It's always easier to lay on a bench and curl your legs up on the curl machine. Most people thnk the GHR is equivalent to a leg curl. But there is almost no comparison as the GHR is far superior. The GHR utilizes much more muscle (calves, glutes, hamstrings, and lower back), where the leg curl really only stresses the hamstrings. Even though my post have slacked off my workouts haven’t. The past couple of weeks this is how my #legday days have gone. Heavy focus on #frontsquats. Assisted by #boxsquats and usually one other #assistanceexercise. Today’s assistance was #bulgariansplitsquats . And for giggles I even posted what almost was a bad accident in the last video. Was suppose to be a final set of box squats with 315x8 but it turned into almost falling to the ground because the calf raise machine had 0 weight on it in the front when I sat down on the back 🤦‍♂️......huge mistake but luckily I caught myself!!!

⚜ Quality Hypertrophy 🇮🇱 In both Kettlebell Sport & Olympic Weightlifting, eccentrics are often left out of training in order to be as "sport specific" as possible. 📌 This means that most of the effort is put into actually training the competition lifts (Clean & Jerk, Snatch). ✅ More Eastern training philosofies (especially the Chinese Olympic lifters) incorporate lot's of eccentrics & assistance lifts into their training. 📌 This allows them to avoid injury & avoid overloading the nervoussystem while still getting stronger (a lot stronger). 💪 A side offect of this type of training is that these lifters (just youtube Chinese & North Korean Olympic Weightlifters) become EXTREMELY muscular. 📌 This type of training may be less ideal if you are seeking to stay in a "lighter" weightclass, but it cannot be denied that this training philosophy has produced some of the greatest and most aesthetic athletes in the world. 🙏 Thank you to @baervonschilling for introducing this cool & effective isolation exercise (Curl, press, tricep extension) 💪

Throwback before COVID. 110lbs. dumbbells in each hand for 22 year old HPT Athlete - @shelby_miles_ - • A lot of things can work for an athlete to aid in their sport training, but nothing works forever. Lifters and their coaches must find what works best for them at certain points in their athletic careers. • Shelby has barbell benched 282lbs. with the use of heavy dumbbells in her training and also barbell benched 292lbs. without them. We now use these primarily in off season and take them out to focus on more barbell bench lifts as she gets closer to a meet. • At certain points in her training we both discussed what was best for her at that point in time and stuck with that plan and saw it through.
