Visited Minneapolis & saw this rad bookstore, which I will now hit up every time I’m in town.  Moon Palace wants to abolish the police! They like books! Perfect.  Moon Palace is, like Birchbark, hella well curated. I was mostly browsing without a list here, and I came away with so much to be excited about.  This bookstore is next door to the police precinct where the protests first erupted after George Floyd was killed. It provided food and help to the protestors, and set up a medic area and supplies drop off hub. Since it's #nonfictionnovember, I thought I'd celebrate two unusual memoirs I recently read. The first, Carolyn Holbrook's Tell Me Your Names and I Will Testify is a memoir-as-essay-collection. Holbrook explores, in beautiful prose, how she became a writer and teacher after time in juvenile detention and several abusive relationships. Holbrook raised five children as, ultimately, a single mother, and she shares her children's stories, as well. (This was one of my #22backlistin2022 books, and I just loved it!) The next memoir is Joy Harjo's Crazy Brave, which I'm reading with @readwithtoni. Harjo, who is also a poet, brings her lyricism into this memoir that blends poetry and prose. Harjo, too, survived abuse and worked to both honor her parents while establishing her own, strong identity as an artist, musician, and writer. Sensitive readers should proceed carefully, but I so appreciated the way that both writers shared their experiences, their challenges and triumphs, the things that gave them strength. Both books share a beautiful sense of heritage, of connection to their ancestors, and I found the many parallels to make these two works a rich pairing. ➡️ What's a memoir you'd recommend? . . . . . #unabridgedpodjenreads #bookishladiesclub #justbooksbookstagram #lovetoread #booksarelife #readingisfundamental #whatimreading #bookreviewer #bookaddicts #bookpost #tbrpile #justread #bookishphotography #whattoreadnext #readallday #bookworms #booksofinstagram #bookwormproblems #bookaholic #booknerd #memoir #memoirs #crazybrave #readwithtoni #joyharjo #tellmeyournamesandiwilltestify #carolynholbrook #essaycollection

Tell Me Your Names and I Will Testify is a short collection of essays that was quick reading and a great resource for more anti-racist learning. I found the book to be easy to get through, and it didn't make me feel dumb as I read through it. While I've really enjoyed reading and listening to lots of books lately with deep ties into anti-racism, at times those books could feel a bit dense and sometimes felt harder for me to understand. All of these books have been difficult in terms of content, but as a reader, I find I like things that are easy to understand and that I can actually absorb. Just Mercy and Thick were both books I found to be told in formats that were easier for me to comprehend. Tell Me Your Names was another of those. While I'm not one to thoroughly read synopses or reviews prior to reading a book, this one was nothing like what I expected it to be. The beginning of the book was enthralling. Holbrook shares her experiences communicating with her ancestors, and in the start of the book she actually shared one of those experiences. However, I kind of misunderstood the setup and thought the other essays would feel more connected to the initial essay, and I didn't feel that many of the stories really even touched on that again, except in instances where Holbrook referred to her "sight." In terms of each essay's storytelling, and the actual experiences shared throughout the book, I really enjoyed learning about Holbrook, her family, and her accomplishments. While this book certainly shared negative experiences she's faced due to being Black in America, I felt the overall theme of this book was about Black joy and accomplishments. Holbrook has done a lot and each of her experiences has led her to so many wonderful things. I actually really liked that the book shared the reminder that it's okay to do things that are important to you, it's okay to be selfish when you need to be because you are important, and that those things that you do for yourself have the potential to change the lives of others, too. *DRC from @netgalley.

Happy Saturday! It's too damn hot outside to do anything, so I am sitting inside, in the nice cool AC, reading. Ruby, on the other hand, just wants to nap and is indulging my picture taking. Hope you all are staying cool today! 📷📚 📕 📕 I finished another book this week called Tell Me Your Names and I Will Testify by Carolyn Holbrook. What an amazing book! It is a series of essays based on her life. She is an amazing woman, and this book testifies to that! Below is my review. 📕 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Just wow! One more book that has taught me that I have a lot to learn. Carolyn uses essays to take you thru her life. Her heartaches, her triumphs, her losses, and her joy. I wonder if she knows just how strong she is. What rang true for me throughout this book, is that she was made not to see her own self worth and that is truly heartbreaking. ⭐ Thank you Carolyn for giving the world this book. May we all learn from it and share it with others. ⭐ Thank you to Netgalley and the University of Minnesota Press for the copy of this eARC in exchange for my honest review. ⭐ #book #books #bookreader #booknerd #booknerdigan #booklover #bookaholic #bookaddict #bookworm #bookgram #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramfeature #bookcommunity #bookish #booksbooksbooks #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookobsessed #booksofinstagram #reader #reading #readersofinstagram #amreading #chihuahua #arc #universityofminnesotapress #carolynholbrook #review #tellmeyournamesandiwilltestify @netgalley

It’s a unique challenge to review this book, because it doesn’t fit into a particular box, but oh my gosh was it good. This book is a ghost story, memoir, tragedy, human triumph. It’s a story about taking people with you, and chance encounters, and how the world is both horrible & beautiful. The author’s experiences with racism, power & prejudice are explored, and the grace and strength she holds dance off the page. I was so deeply impressed that I googled the author & found out she’s AMAZING. If you’re curious, check out Carolyn Holbrook- author & activist. Review ~ 'Would things improve for women... My hope was that they would find the courage within themselves that we women have always had: the courage to know and believe that we exist, we are here, we are powerful, we are strong; the strength to stand up to a world that would continue to try to keep them in the kitchen.' ~ I was approved to read this book/collection of essays ahead of publication through Netgalley. I enjoyed reading this story which felt like a memoir of sorts from Carolyn Holbrook. The depiction of her life, with all its setbacks, limitations, and the regular racist microaggressions she has been subject to were both eye opening and in some ways unsurprising. Yet at the same time the book was very hopeful. I did feel that the start of the book with the mention of the apparition felt a bit different to the rest of this book. I would have liked to have known more about that particular story personally and the lineage and history there. I did also like the many references and quotes through the book from other writers. They feel particularly relevant at the moment. ~ 'We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty' - Maya Angelou. ~ This book also spoke to me from a feminist perspective and the additional limitations enforced on women, particularly black women and women of colour. 'What is it that will set us free?' ~ I would recommend this book, but probably wouldn't re-read again. - - - #carolynholbrook #tellmeyournamesandiwilltestify #bookreviews #bookrecommendation #bookstagram #netgalley #goodreads #diversifyyourshelf #supportblackauthors #beautifulbooks #essays #readingtime #readingchallenge
