May haul part 1. Went crazy this month. For this haul, I went into Barnes and Noble thinking I might get 4-5 books, but I ended up getting 13(!) (Two of them not pictured here because one of them was a replacement for a lost copy and the other was a double copy.) Hadn't really have any of these in mind before other than the Saevus Corax series, and I didn't know the sequel to the Warden was coming out. For some of these series I don't have the complete trilogy (eg. Vengeful Gods, the Black Iron Legacy) so will get those other books later through Amazon. This was my largest in-person book haul to date. Finished reading #thewarden from #danielmford this morning and immediately moved into book 2, #necrobane; pretty fun stories (so far), with inventive magic and action. The quote from Glen Cook is not one I’d disagree with much. Of interest, I bought The Warden in hardcover, then bought it in trade paperback, having failed to realize it was the same book because of the extreme artistic change of direction; mildly annoying that they don’t match, especially as I rather liked the original art (though I like the new art and its comic style, too). Simon here, standing in for Jedi today. This is book two of The Warden series, and it picks up immediately after the end of book one. The story and characters came back to us right away as the reader is reminded of what happened in the first book without infodumps. Aelis is a necromancer, a healer, and a warden. An army of the animated dead are loose somewhere in the countryside and she and her friends leave the village she’s protecting to hunt them down and stop them before they can wreak havoc. The plot moves along at a good pace with action balanced with calmer scenes. Aelis is a good character- she has flaws and messes up but keeps going. We enjoyed this, and we’re looking forward to the next book. It comes out April 23. Review: The Warden by Daniel M. Ford Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I actually read and reviewed this a while ago before I started this bookstagram, but I hadn’t posted about it yet. This week and the past few have just been insane and I haven’t had much time to read, so I figured I’d pull this out of my drafts and put it up! Unfortunately, I didn’t love The Warden. I think the main character felt weak and I didn’t love the development of the world through verbal exposition. The book felt like it ended when there was still nearly 50 pages left, and the rest just felt like a rushed way to add a cliffhanger. November, 2023. The Warden by Daniel M. Ford. I was apparently approved for this from NetGalley, but then I got so busy that I completely missed it. So, very sorry about that! The narration by Lindsay Dorcus was awesome. Wardens are like rangers and wizards mixed into one. Our main character, Aelis, is a sword wielding, wand caster, and the new arriving overseer of Lone Pine. She is a necromancer, an anatomist, and pretty good with a sword too. The world pieces Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and even Harry Potter, and I could see people thinking Gideon the Ninth too. With all that in mind, the blend read very unique to me, as well as fully fleshed out. The inner thoughts of Aelis, somewhat sarcastic and even self-deprecating, mixed with the more deadpan and steadfast personality of her half-orc guide, Tun, read as a great dynamic. I did struggle a bit with the half-elf love interest though. It felt kind of like pushing for a sapphic subthread that didn’t really need to be there. Or at least it wasn’t fleshed out enough for me. I’d also liken it to some older fantasy series in the sense that it doesn’t deliver on some gigantic climax. That didn’t really work for me in the moment, but I think I’ve just become so engrained in the modern delivery of heavy action before the end. This does not have that, and that’s actually okay. It’s not without action, nor is it boring at all! Personally a 4/5*. The Warden ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I knew right away that I was going to love The Warden. First, the title and description are compelling. But it was the first two chapters that sold me on this story. I love the idea of magical Wardens setting up shop, working to protect the townspeople from necromancy and other monsters. Mostly, I loved Daniel M. Ford's take on necromancy and magical abilities. It made the system feel new and fresh, adding weight to the world and the story as a whole. I'm already looking forward to the next novel, and that's at least partially because I want to see more of the world/magical system. On that note, I found myself enjoying the present more than all the flashbacks. Yes, they were relevant to Aelis' situation, but I feel like they could have been summed up in one or two flashbacks if that makes sense. Regardless, I really enjoyed The Warden and can't wait for the next novel in the series to release. The cliffhanger may have something to do with that anxiety, but only partially. This is a world worth diving into. The Warden by Daniel M. Ford - fantasy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Narration by Lindsey Dorcus. First off I miss this type of fantasy and was pleasantly surprised by this book. The characters were great and, of course, the Half Orc and a goat were my favorite characters. This was a fun story. It reminded me of classic D&D fantasy but with a twist. It was pretty fast paced and well told. There were times (during Warden Aelis's reminiscing) I wasn't sure if we were in the past or present but that didn't hurt the story in the least; and very well could have been me. I loved this strange little village full of souls plagued by memories of past wars and superstition. Aelis was a bit of a snob in the beginning but watching her growth throughout the book was refreshing. It was so subtle you could almost miss it. I think fans of the old Dragon Lance books would enjoy this author. I know I did. I am very much looking forward to the next book. Releasing April 18th . I thought this book was a fun, light bordering on cozy, fantasy, with a cover that really drew me in. While it was a slower-going story, and some of the high stakes didn't really feel as suspenseful as I would like, I really enjoyed reading this. I loved the world-building and magic, I enjoyed seeing Aelis as she settled into her new life, trying to help its residents even as they were afraid of her. I loved her friendship with Tun and how she ended up making some unlikely friends and even got her own loved interest. I think that this as a first book did a good job of setting everything up for the next book, and the way it ended definitely left me wanting to read what comes out next. . ⭐⭐ (2/5 stars) 📖 Title: The Warden ✍️ Author: Daniel M. Ford 🗓️ Publish date: April 18, 2023 . . . I think this novel is perfect for fans of Legends and Lattes or anyone who wants to dip their toes into fantasy without being overwhelmed by too many confusing terms and concepts. With that being said, The Warden just wasn't for me. It felt like a cozy fantasy because everything was resolved quickly and any conflict that the MC found herself in felt very low stakes. The audiobook narrator was great and I think she was the only reason that I actually finished this book. Aelis, the MC, wasn't likeable or relatable at all. I was hoping for some character growth by the end of the novel, but there was none. I honestly don't mind unlikeable characters, but she was so conceited the entire time and acted like she was above everyone else. She couldn't stop talking about being a noble who went to university and was an expert in 3 (I think? Idk) specialties or whatever it was. There was seriously nothing redeeming about her. Other than that, the world building was just okay. Everything felt very copy and paste from generic fantasy novels that have been written hundreds of times before. There was nothing that really stood out for me. I've read fantasy novels with boring or despicable characters, but the world building was exceptional. But this ain't it though. Also I didn't understand why Aelis had so many flashbacks to her university days. I'm all for backstory but at that point, why couldn't the book just be about her time at the lyceum? That would've been more interesting. And I didn't realize that Aelis was literally talking out loud to herself until I read the other reviews. The audiobook did a great job masking that fact. The one character I found interesting, Tun, didn't get enough air time imo. I didn't care for any of the other characters. Maurenia wasn't fleshed out enough so I couldn't be bothered about the romance. I ended up zoning out a lot so I can't really pick out any specific character and name their traits. Other than Aelis and her haughtiness. Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for this arc.

First and fore most I loved the narrator of this Audio, she did such a great job of bringing this book to life. This story has all the makings of the start of a high fantasy series. I enjoyed the wide cast of characters and was really amused with our MC. Her inner and outer monologues were fun. The world building was a little lacking for me for the scope that book is trying to encompass but hopefully that will be addressed in later books. This story starts off slow, almost too slow, and had a tendency to ramp up without actually meeting any sort of climax until about the last third of the book. Once it did take off though it was great. Actually got this book #thewarden by #danielmford because I confused him with author #johnmford (ah, fickle memory once again). But, all is well, as it has a cool cover, and some folks on the interwebs seem to think highly of it, so no harm, no foul, as they say. Should be out at your local B&N if you are interested. As for my current reads, I’ve got 30 pages left in John Le Carré’s first Smiley novel, I’m halfway through my re-read of Night of Knives, halfway through a buddy read of an espionage/mystery novel called Black Wolf, 35 pages into another buddy read of John Lawton’s espionage/mystery novel Then We Take Berlin, and I have to get back to Blindsight, a SF novel that’s good, though I confess to not loving the author’s writing style, then on into @doombunnybryan’s SF story #beforetheshatteredgatesofheaven. Declare, the Tim Powers novel I posted a week or so ago, has been back-burnered once again, as neither I nor my friend were in the mood, so we went with the John Lawton. Whew! Finished Ordination by Daniel M. Ford today. What could be this book’s greatest strength and weakness is how by the numbers it feels. While focusing on a paladin does feel comparably original, most of the subplots and even elements of the main plot have the feeling of ‘I’ve read this book before.’ This isn’t saying Ordination is bad. Just unfortunately bland.
