Day 22 of #wyrdandwonder24 explores #historicalfantasy in #thewatersofthepast! I LOVE historical fantasy, it's one of my favourite subgenres, so I was completely spoilt for choice here. But, I've ultimately picked the first two books in #themirrorrealmcycle by Ariel Kaplan - #thepomegranategate and #therepublicofsalt. Not only are their covers stunningly illustrated by @micaelaalcainodesign (and book one also has beautiful pomegranate #spredges!) but the story inside is wonderful too: lush, unique, really funny, heartrending and beautifully written. The series takes place in an alternate 15th century Spain at the height of the Inquisition, combining Jewish mythology with political shenanigans across two realms and bags of character development. It's got multiple narrators on both sides of the mirror and it's one of the few multiple POV series where I don't find myself speeding through chapters to get back to another character: from sarcastic fish out of water Toba to precious cinnamon roll Naftalay, Toba's clockwork-minded grandmother Elena to the morally ambiguous Courser. Each POV brings something unique to the narrative with distinct voices and motivations - often pulling in different directions. I was reading my ARC of #thepomegranategate as I was applying to work at Solaris, and it really helped convince me that this was somewhere I would love working, so it's always going to have a special place in my heart. A Trail of Fire consists of four short stories set in the world of Outlander. I wish that Katherine Arden's books were buzzier because they are absolutely brilliant. Her Winternight trilogy, which starts with The Bear and the Nightingale, is an absolutely gorgeous historical fantasy series, and her newest novel, The Warm Hands of Ghosts, has the same magic. ➡️ What author do you wish had more buzz? Set in Canada and Europe during World War I, the book alternates between the perspectives of two siblings altered forever by the war. Laura was a field nurse who returned to Halifax after an injury, leaving her brother Freddie at the front. Shortly after her return—and the death of both of her parents—she receives word that Freddie has died. But some things seem strange about the communication, so Laura joins a hospital group heading overseas to find the whole story. Freddie's story, the other half of the narrative, begins when he is buried in a pillbox with a wounded German soldier, Hans Winter. The two work together to try to dig their way out of certain death. Because the timelines are staggered, Freddie's story always lags slightly behind Laura's, building suspense and uncertainty. And then there are the ghosts, a constant presence in both of their lives. Arden's writing is gorgeous—I stopped to admire so many sentences—and the story is captivating, centering Laura and Freddie but also illuminating the lives of an array of secondary characters who become part of the siblings' lives. Historical fantasy at its finest! Marie Brennan’s Onyx Court series is the perfect combination of historical fiction and fairy fantasy. With Faustian influences and magic schemes, the two mirroring sides of London couldn’t be more at odds. It’s the fairy court vs the court of of Elizabeth I trying to outdo each other. I read this in one day and I cannot wait to continue the series!
Katherina is one of the major supporting characters. It was interesting writing how she contrasts with Leela. Both are Benelim huntresses yet they have different skills and different outlooks. Katherina is not in a relationship with Leela, they are merely good friends. They've been companions for centuries and its made both of them strong. Katherina represents the well meaning but still prejudiced mindset a lot of Benelim have toward humans. Yet she also exemplifies the ones who are also willing to admit their faults and are capable of change. This was something I had to fine tune between the drafts but I think I got a good balance. With the Inquisition’s wrath looming, Luzia is drawn to Guillén Santangel, an immortal familiar serving her patron in the competition, in order to survive. After Ninth House and Hell Bent, if Leigh Bardugo writes it, I’ll read it, so I was so excited to start this new book by Bardugo, especially since it’s set in a time period that I know little about. The concept of the magic and its real cultural roots was so interesting, and the way that the story expands from there was really well done as well. I also love a fantasy competition story, since the prospect of “trials” or “tasks” always makes the story feel propulsive and quick paced. I think I found myself a little lost in the motivations of the characters though, and also a little unable to connect with the characters. The romantic and occult vibes themselves are great in this one though, and I love that it’s a standalone, since sometimes fantasy series can be a let down when you only have the first book so far. Ultimately, I found the narrative style a little too detached for my personal taste, and while I really enjoyed this read and definitely recommend picking it up, it wasn’t my favorite by Bardugo. It’s definetely a bit slow, but I liked the dual timelines and following the characters as their stories converged. Owlcrate did a fantastic job with this edition! Three Line Thursday: How Ruth views her deafness. This week's excerpt features Ruth confronted by another Godshard character named Jolene about a possible spell that could "heal" her deafness. Ruth declines the offer and politely explains why. This mindset was born from the research I did on the subject matter, both from looking up articles and from talking to people about it first hand. A lot of deaf and hoh people don't like noise, they don't like using hearing aids and there are times when they find sound to be just annoying and distracting. It was quite remarkable and endearing and as someone who tends to be quite sensitive to noises what with being on the spectrum, to the point where when I go to bed the amount of noises has to be precisely the right volume and other noises can easily distract me and prevent me from sleeping ... Sheba was interesting to write. She exemplifies how you don't need to be a powerful Godshard to have an impact on the world. She is an old soul and that crucial rock and foundation Ruth needs. I made a point however to make sure she isn't defined by Ruth. She's an important Godshard in her own right. Her charisma helps herself the most and she became a beloved teacher on Adam's Island. Her relationship with Ruth is endearing however, a delightful case of opposites attract, of friends to lovers. I approached this dynamic as simply two people who love each other. I hope that shines through. Godshards: The Uniter is set in a very roman inspired fantasy setting and Clodius Decimus embodies the Republic of Primus well. Combining my loves of history and fantasy like this is my pride and joy. The Roman Republic has more stuff people can tap into besides commanders and senators and I wanted to illustrate that here. Clodius is a Consul, which is similar to the president, except their term is shorter and there's two of them. Clodius has two chapters in his POV, where we see what drives him and how that determines his relationship with The Uniter. 💙🎻 The Warm Hands of Ghosts: a review 🎻💙 The Warm Hands of Ghosts is a welcome return to the writing of Katherine Arden, who is one of my favorite authors. While the voice she uses in The Warm Hands of Ghosts (or Fiend, as Arden nicknamed it and I think of it) is different from the prose of the Winternight Trilogy, it is extremely tailored to the 1910s time period, and I was thoroughly impressed at the commitment. The amount of historical research in Fiend is evident throughout it, and it adds the true historical feeling to this speculative, fantasy novel. What is the fantasy element, in this novel about a combat nurse returning to the front to search for her lost younger brother? It’s none other than the fiend himself, a fiddler who appears with a mysterious hotel travelling through No Man’s Land, where soldiers wander in to drink wine and revel before waking up in ruins the next morning, pining for more. I loved Faland’s character, and I’m always fond of eerie buildings that move from place to place—one of my favorite things. I thought both povs were well-fleshed out, the characters all believable. While my favorite chapters were Freddie’s, Laura’s are just as strong. And while Freddie and Winter’s relationship was my favorite—Canadian and German soldiers who find themselves trapped together, only to promise not to let the other die as they forge a deeply intense bond of devotion and tenderness amid the horror of WW1—I also really liked the dynamics between Laura and her beautiful widowed friend Pim, and Laura and Jones, a non-nonsense American doctor. Fiend did not take me long to read. The beginning felt a little slow, but the chapters are short and easy to keep reading. And yes, I did cry a tiny bit by the end. . “We were dead together, we were born together. The Familiar // Leigh Bardugo 🦂 𝔜𝔬𝔲 𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔫𝔨 𝔶𝔬𝔲 𝔨𝔫𝔬𝔴 𝔥𝔞𝔯𝔡𝔰𝔥𝔦𝔭, 𝔟𝔲𝔱 𝔪𝔢𝔫 𝔥𝔞𝔳𝔢 𝔞 𝔤𝔦𝔣𝔱 𝔣𝔬𝔯 𝔣𝔦𝔫𝔡𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔫𝔢𝔴 𝔴𝔞𝔶𝔰 𝔱𝔬 𝔪𝔞𝔨𝔢 𝔴𝔬𝔪𝔢𝔫 𝔰𝔲𝔣𝔣𝔢𝔯. One of the most anticipated releases of 2024 (to me but also so many people out there I’m sure!) I didn’t know what to expect with that book. I knew the plot vaguely and was sold by those facts ; historical fiction with magic set in Spain - during the Spanish Golden Age. I loved that, sure, you have a main protagonist in this story but, every secondary characters have a voice. While I loved Luzia and Santángel, I also really loved Luzia’s aunt bluntness and selfishness, Valentina’s redemption arc and, even some of the villains that you just love to hate. I’m not particularly a fan of multiple pov in novels, more than two can really take you out of the story, but in this book? It works wonders honestly and it was brilliantly done. Even if you don’t have a chapter dedicated to one character nor his/her name introduced before, it’s fluid and not unsettling at all. I thought the way the pov were switching was clever for that. Now, I didn’t expect that much romance (there isn’t that much but, still, I was surprise by it a little) and I must admit, that wasn’t my favorite part. Obviously, having read Six of Crows (and most of Leigh Bardugo’s work) I already knew her writing and characters can be compelling. For me, her books are either a hit or a miss. For a little context here ; I wasn’t really a fan of the grisha trilogy - I couldn’t stand Alina. I also didn’t enjoy Ninth House (and haven’t read Hell Bent because of that) but, Six of Crows is my favorite and for good reasons! I would say that, it’s still is, even after The Familiar. My only small qualm is that the ending felt a bit rushed. This book is a little creepy and super layered, and it will keep you on your toes... it's set in candlelight, a story of hidden shadows. While I was working on Godshards: The Uniter, I needed names for supporting and side characters. So I made a video on tiktok, giving people the opportunity to have their name featured in the story, all they had to do was like the video! 16 people ended up getting their names featured.
