I'm working on an illicit passion project. Not often, but like, right now, for instance, I'm on the tail end of a day spent working on it. I told my husband that because I have so much of this project stewing in my head, I need the time and space to try to get it out as quickly as possible while I have "it" and so I'm sneaking some weekend time when we can swing it. Meanwhile, weekdays still have to be dedicated to Things with Deadlines. But! I can report (you heard it hear first, folks...) that even though the going was bumpier than I'd hoped today and the words stopped flowing freely sometime around the two hour mark, taking a few wild swings for the hell of it is good for the artistic soul and I highly recommend, from time-to-time, making stuff with total disregard for the market and other people's opinions and expectations as a remedy for what ails you.
Hello, from my desk where I'm currently working on my Christmas story and by that I mean trying to keep from throwing my laptop against the wall. I started out with a plan (ha!) that I, almost immediately, had to discard because the pages just didn't have any energy to them and if there's something that sets my alarm bells off in my own works in progress, it's a lack of energy on the page. (Wow, I'm getting witchier and witchier in my old age, right?)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But seriously, I feel like I can fix virtually anything else. But that meant I was stuck. So stuck. Eventually I tired of staring at my blank word document and literally just started writing nonsense in my notebook, words that meant nothing, until I unexpectedly struck on a Very Cool Idea. Too bad for me, Very Cool Ideas are often the hardest to pull off, so progress is slow and tedious, but after some initial feedback I think I'm on the right track. Send coffee or scotch.
Cruising into summer with short hair and Birkenstocks like WHO AM I?? But I'm kinda into it?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To take this in a whole other direction, though, I'm feeling so frustrated with some of the fashion messaging--no more skinny jeans, blah blah blah--CLEARLY specifically engineered to get me to spend more money. And yet...it's working. (This is your brain, this is your brain on Instagram...) Alas. I don't have an answer there. After all, I'm just a girl who bought Birkenstocks, so.
I'm in a work slump and I'm not totally sure why. I have a few potential diagnoses. One might be switching between projects. I knew I'd be switching and so I always get the feeling of: what's the point when I'm about to have to stop. And then I did stop and there is that sunk cost of losing momentum and having to ramp up on something else that I HATE. Also waiting for news. I love having irons in the fire and find it energizing, but waiting for news on projects can be distracting. Then there is The Husbands. I feel like I'm starting to fret about my book going out into the world and feeling like I *should* be doing something, but also knowing I *should* be taking advantage of this time when I can still work. So, all this to say. The work slump is real and I don't quite have a solution.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What do y'all do when you're struggling to focus? FIX ME!

"Don't look down" but make it Writing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Don't look down" may sound like a weird mantra for an activity I do planted on my rear end where my biggest fear is carpal tunnel, but it's what I tell myself nearly every single day. I have a lot of projects in the air right now, a lot of words that need to be written and--oh yeah--they have to be good. But I've been here before. And the one thing I know is that if you just do the work every day--not at a sprint pace (walk don't run)--it gets done. That's how I juggle multiple projects. I just keep walking. And I never look down.

All of the colors of the rainbow and for my next project, y'all helped me pick...lime green!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Every book I write gets a dedicated composition notebook where I free write plot ideas, observations, chapter beginnings and endings and just generally try to explain to myself what the heck it is I think I'm trying to say. Something about the tactile nature of writing longhand always breaks loose the things I'm struggling to uncover when typing. Plus it's a lot less pressure since...no one else can read my terrible handwriting.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A few scribbled pages into my new notebook and I'm loving the lime green vibe. By the end, this thing will be well-loved, tattered and have every last page filled. I've been experiencing such a shift the last couple of months. I have been a huge audiobook listener for years and generally listen to probably 3-4 x more audiobooks than I read per year, but lately I've been swinging back the other way. We welcomed our son on New Year's Eve and so I started this year in a hospital room. I'm an avid New Year's Resolutions guy. For 2020, I hoped to:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -finish writing The Husbands..Result? CHECK!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -get into a better routine as a full-time writer, including exercising at least 3x per week...Result? CHECK!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -eat vegetarian two times a week...Result? FAIL! (This was my hardest one...)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -write something that isn't a novel...Result? PARTIAL CREDIT! (I've started at least)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -write a proposal for my next adult book....Result? FAIL! AND I LOVED IT. I got such Big Little Lies vibes reading through this book, there are so many similarities in themes between these two books: girl boss power, the importance of women supporting women, paranoia leading up to discovering the identity of a character’s death, etc.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are so many aspects of this book I loved but the main ones revolve around the SUPER ENGAGING writing style. Most chapters begin/end with a monologue centered around general “we” statements that explore the modern woman’s relationship with work, expectations, balance of personal/professional life, etc. These paragraphs are enlightening because they point out so many situations modern women find themselves in everywhere, which makes you relate so much more to the characters while also realizing these lessons/experiences far surpass an engaging read, but are realizations to what women go through every day, every where.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Another writing style aspect I really enjoyed is that the literary medium is so much more than just regular chapters. Readers learn through transcripts of interviews with lawyers/detectives, emails, text messages, newspaper articles, eyewitness accounts, and more. Not since fourth grade when I read and re-read The Hobbit over and over again. Also I've read the last Harry Potter twice. But that's it. “There is no more somber enemy of good art than the pram in the hall.” -- Cyril Connolly⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I feel like every creative considering parenthood has heard this quote and become preoccupied with it. I have. Here's what I think: it's half true. Having kids makes it hard to have time and space and energy, all ingredients needed for making art. But when it comes to making GOOD art, I disagree. Being a mother turns your heart inside out and the world needs artists who are parents, artists who are mothers in particular. And, you know what? I'm not totally convinced more time always means better art. Moms are efficient. Moms get stuff done. I was terrified to have my second child this year. I thought again and again about this quote, which I'd nearly forgotten about. But it's fine. Everything's fine. My art is FINE. And, for the record, it's not that I care less about my art because I had kids. I don't believe that after kids "nothing else matters," which I used to hear so often like that was comforting. My daughter has been wanting to go on "Mommy Runs" with me, so we've been making a thing of running to our neighborhood's Little Free Library where she picks out books (all grown up books) and carries them around. She's been melting my heart telling people she wrote these books (like me!). Right now, she's toting around her copy of @kevinkwanbooks Sex & Vanity, which she says is "about pools." I'm nearing the end for revisions on The Husbands. Every time I write a book, I forget how to do it and have to invent a new process. Whisper Network I was all about colored index cards and a cork board. This time my revision process seems to involve getting my edit letter, creating a word document with a chapter outline of my existing draft and then writing color-coded directions to myself about what I need to do with each chapter. It's like a word map. The process of creating the chapter outline is tedious but not too terribly long and I find the clear instructions comforting to my busy brain right now. After I meet a deadline, I always get the urge to do something tactile and concrete. It feels like a good counterbalance for my brain and I’m a menace without a project. So last week, even though I am not a DIYer nor handy I got a wild hair and decided to paint my kitchen island green. My neighbor told me it would take about 2.5 hours. Reader, it did not. I spent 5 days on this thing. But I’m happy with the finished result (swipe to see the before) and glad that I couldn’t go back despite my initial immediate regret at having started. I also got this gallery wall (last photo!) done that I’ve been meaning to do for 3 years so move over Chip and Joanna. Back on deadline now. Confession: For a writer, I think I'm kind of a slow reader. I rely heavily on audiobooks and struggle to get enough reading time in because by the end of a writing day I often feel like my eyes are bleeding?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But not reading enough physical books makes me sad so in the last year I've actually gone on the hunt for concrete tips to help myself read more:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Make it a ritual – I read in the bath and I look forward to this routine; I'm generally too tired to read in bed, so getting it in when I'm a little more awake helps me⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Reduce mindless scrolling – Put screen time limits on my phone so I don't waste all my reading time⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Set a goal on @goodreads and track it (my goal is 30 books/year)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. I loved it so much! Whisper Network is about three women, Sloane, Ardie, and Grace, who work as in house attorneys at Truviv, Inc. The sudden death of Truviv's CEO means their boss Ames Garret may be appointed the next CEO. There are rumors, whispers, and personal interactions with Ames that show he uses his power to mistreat women. Sloane, Ardie, and Grace decide to speak up, and drama unfolds. As a working mom so much of this book was SO relatable, especially if you've worked in corporate environments. It's an incredibly timely #metoo movement novel, but covers much more than that. I loved the characters and the narrative showing the challenges women face in the workplace. A quote from a Grazia review called it "part work place thriller part feminist call to arms" and I couldn't think of a better way to describe it. This week I went to see my parents who hadn’t seen my son since he was born 7 months ago and on our return trip I was so excited to see Whisper Network at the top of the stack in Charlotte airport.
