Somit habe ich nur halb so viele Romane wie Thriller und Krimis, was meine Lesevorlieben deutlich zur Schau stellt. This week's pick is "Whisper Network" by @chandlerbakerbooks. Another pick suggested by my favorite book club, @reesesbookclub! This book is feminist, powerful and full of plot twist. Oh, and very unpredictable. Its plot about women abuse at work is relevant and actual. It's a book that says "enough is enough." Looking forward to finish this book this week and to go through all its shocking plot twists. WHISPER NETWORK by Chandler Baker // Four women who work at a big corporation separately deal with their male boss’s varying levels of inappropriate behavior. Now he’s paying too much attention to a new hire and being considered for a promotion to CEO. Uh oh, someone’s dead!!! This was a pre-pandemic mid-Me Too movement publication and it felt… dated. It’s only been 5 years since this was published, but we’ve been through a lot 🥴 and topical books often don’t stand the test of time. OR it was so heavy handed that it didn’t resonate. Hard to say which - maybe both? In any case, it dragged and could have been edited into a more concise story. There is a chorus of “we” representing women that I found annoying as hell. It just didn’t have a place in this story. Overall: it has been done before and better 🤷🏻♀️ Finished 1/18/24. #WhisperNetwork #ChandlerBaker

Quando o diretor da empresa m0rr3 e elas descobrem que Ames Garrett está sendo cotado para liderar a corporação, elas decidem não ficar quietas. A ascensão de Ames, um homem com histórico de chantagem, intimidação e 4ss3di0 s3xu4l e moral, irá trazer à tona a força feminina e irá denunciar o machismo dentro das corporações. Rede de sussurros possui uma premissa importante e necessária, por isso estava com grandes expectativas para lê-lo. Entretanto, a leitura não foi tudo isso para mim e me decepcionei com o desenvolvimento. Achei interessante que o ponto de vista intercalava entre as personagens, mas ao mesmo tempo também fiquei entediada, isso porque não me simpatizei com a Sloane (achei chata) e ela teve grande protagonismo e importância. As demais protagonistas me conquistaram e queria ter visto mais. Além disso, também achei que os temas foram abordados de forma mediana, sem aprofundamento. O final também achei corrido. Não acho que esse livro foi para mim. Gosto de mais detalhes e descrições, por mais pesadas que sejam. Entretanto, para quem quer ler sobre o assunto, mas possui sensibilidade com os temas, talvez seja um livro bom. E aí, já ouviram falar sobre Rede de sussurros?

This was a powerful, thought-provoking book. I admire the breadth the author was able to cover without losing nuance. When The List is published, a range of men are impacted - some guilty, some of lesser offenses, some of things they’ve grown past. The social media backlash blurs all of that together and the immediate focus on potential false accusations covers for the men who are definitively guilty. There is no nuance and no depth in social media reactions to this issue and, as this book points out, therefore little to no actual justice or progress. While the backlash is substantial, and the consequences devastating for some, the actual fallout for most men on the list is temporary and/or negligible. Some even profit by the publicity. No justice is delivered. Too often, I think discussions about these informal lists or whisper networks focus on the people who write them/ pass these messages along. Is it responsible? Is it revenge? Is it harmful? That angle assumes we have all these options and just chose to handle it this way, ignoring the fact that this is a direct response to a lack of official channels and protection. No one says this situation is ideal. We would love to be able to rely on the legal system or other official channels, but that isn’t an option. I’m reminded of THAT teacher, every school has one. It recently came up in an alumni group and everyone gave the same name. We all knew who he was. Everyone knew and no-one did anything, so a whisper network is all we had. It’s self-defense, not persecution. Instead, this book focuses on how social media handles these issues, which is well worth the conversation. From the initial outrage, the immediate push for firing, the conflation of all potential offenses, the crowd acted without reason or restraint. This irresponsible handling of the news is destructive. When that destruction happens, the crowd responds with calls for positivity and support, but it’s clear that they have learned nothing. There is no long term change. Since we often have to handle these matters informally or in the court of public opinion, the way we talk to and about people is crucial.

But what research are students to do, when so little information about judges as managers and a diversity of clerkship experiences is available to them? As Aliza Shatzman and LAP board member Karyn Polak (BUSL '94) discussed at @bostonuniversityschooloflaw , law students - regardless of their law school’s ranking and formal clerkship resources - UNIVERSALLY lack transparent #clerkship information. Over the past 18 months, we’ve spoken with more than 80 law schools’ student organizations about their schools’ clerkship resources. The frustration is near universal. LAP's Clerkships Database is the solution. The current #clerkship system - apply blind and hope for the best - is untenable and an enormous disservice to students, considering the consequential nature of this first legal job. Students look to their law schools - and often not much further - for clerkship resources. It’s time for law schools to recognize their role in the problem - perpetuating an opaque system and the clerkship #WhisperNetwork - and commit to achieving solutions. LAP is the solution. I'm finally back home after spending 5 days in Columbus helping my daughter and son-in-law with some of the after-surgery issues. Sorry, @alyssatheelf, for making you laugh so hard it made you cry from the pain! While I was there, I read #WhisperNetwork by @chandlerbakerbooks and I loved it so much. Women supporting women, taking down a man who got too full of himself, trying to be successful while also running families and being held back by male coworkers. By the end of the book, I was cheering!! Also, it's book 17 from my #23backlistin2023 TBR pile!

Happy Saturday from OKC! Started today extra early with a private volleyball lesson for the eldest crotch goblin. Aveți blănoși pasionați de lectură? 🤭😍 🤫 Rețeaua șoaptelor, Chandler Baker (3✨) 🤫 Semnalul de alarmă tras prin această carte e unul foarte bun și actual din păcate, însă modul în care povestea a fost prezentată nu m-a încântat mai deloc. Ce mi-a plăcut: - mesajul transmis a fost puternic, actual și prea real din păcate - am găsit și multe pasaje de subliniat - am putut să arunc și o privire asupra unor aspecte legate de maternitate la care nu m-am gândit în detaliu până acum - coperta e superbă și se află și în corelație cu ideea principală - ultimele 150 de pagini au mers foarte repede și au adus și fapte captivante - am adorat epilogul. Ce nu mi-a plăcut: - rezolvarea misterului nu m-a convins, mai ales că a fost ignorat un aspect crucial - putea să fie mai scurtă cu măcar 100 de pagini - multe detalii irelevante pentru mesajul acțiunii, în special mici drame și povești care nu aduc vreun plus - vreo 250 de pagini nu s-a întâmplat nimic palpitant ori interesant, motiv pentru care m-am chinuit destul de tare cu ea până acolo - deși am înțeles acțiunile personajelor feminine, uneori mi s-a părut că se exagerează situația lor dramatică - personajele m-au disperat câteodată. Dacă sunteți mame și treceți printr-o perioadă mai grea, chiar nu cred că ar fi o carte potrivită pentru voi. În rest, o recomand, chiar și doar pentru conștientizarea anumitor realități prin care trec femeile. New followers, plus I have a new book coming out soon, so hi, I'm Chandler Baker. I've written books like the @reesesbookclub pick, Whisper Network, the @gmabookclub pick, The Husbands, which I'm adapting for MGM to star Kristen Wiig. I also wrote a bunch of YA books, including This Is Not The End (which I still love and people should read and I don't say that lightly) and my most recent, Hello (From Here), which I wrote during the pandemic in the most dreamy, lovely collaboration with @wesleykingauthor.
