#catalinamrecommends | 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗨 𝗚𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗯𝘆 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 It's still Black History Month so I wanted to talk a bit about this book. I've read it like five years ago and I loved it a lot. I think we should read books with POC characters written by POC authors all year long (this is also one of my reading goals this year and I hope to achieve it). It's important to see their stories told by them. 𝙒𝙃𝙔 𝘿𝙊 𝙄 𝙍𝙀𝘾𝙊𝙈𝙈𝙀𝙉𝘿 𝙄𝙏? If you want to know more about racism and police brutality and how it affects black families, I think you can start with this book and continue with non-fiction ones if you want. It'll show how stereotypes, prejudice and the justice system fails to protect people. Angie Thomas exposed the realities black people and not only still have to deal with through the characters. I liked how mature Starr was. At the same time, her trauma wasn't brushed off. It was shown how she tried to cope with it and find justice for Khalil. The relationship she had with her parents and her brothers was well written and it was good to see how they supported her and trusted her. I liked how it was shown that you're allowed to cut off toxic people from your life too. Be prepared because the book has an open ending. Other books that have similar subjects and that are on my TBR are Dear Martin by Nic Stone, Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo and This Is My America by Kim Johnson. These books are amazing on audio and will all leave you wanting to read more. They may be classified as young adult, but they are great for readers of adult fiction as well. Here’s how I rank Thomas’ books: 1️⃣ The Hate U Give - one of the best books I’ve ever read. One that everyone should read, that should be taught in every school and has one of the best film adaptations. If you haven’t read this one, add it to your TBR asap! 2️⃣ Concrete Rose - the prequel to THUG. Just as special and perfect to read if you have withdrawals after reading THUG. 3️⃣ On the Come Up - A bit of a lighter read, perfect for fans of 90s Hip-Hop/R&B and rap battles. This one was just adapted into a movie in September. Haven’t watched it yet but excited to see how it translates to the screen. The Hate U Give, is one of those books that will stay with you forever. It may be a YA book, but it should be read by all adults, not just young ones. It contains some very powerful, hard-hitting messages. Important messages, that hopefully will change the way you look at certain parts of society, and make you understand that not all what you deem to be true, actually is. This isn’t a police-bashing book though, far from it. Yes, there is conflict with the law, but the conflict also goes much deeper within the community too. The author has given you the opportunity to discover what really happens in poor, predominantly-black neighbourhoods in the USA. The book may be fictional, but the basis is very real. Filled with characters that you can relate to, and scenarios that you read about far too often, this book will touch your heart. Gut-wrenchingly honest, it will have your emotions going into overdrive. It is also uplifting in the way that Starr deals with the aftermath of the shooting, and her courage to stand up for what she believes in. I loved the way her mother is portrayed, and the manner in which she views and relates to the world, with her positive, yet realistic attitude. Then you have the very different personalities that her brothers Sekani and Seven bring to the story, especially Seven’s young, humorous outlook on life. When it came to her dad, Maverick, although I found him very wise, and he loved his family dearly, he often viewed society as us, and them. Written with such elegance, and passion, it is hard to believe that this is Ms. Thomas’s debut novel. It held me captivated to the pages, and to Starr, her family and her friends’ lives. Der perfekte Nachfolger, obwohl es ja vor eig davor spielt, von the hate u give. Ich hatte keinerlei Einstiegs Probleme, obwohl es echt lange her ist das ich das Buch gelesen habe, die Welt war mir vertraut und die Charaktere auch. Es wurde in meinen Augen wieder eine perfekte Geschichte erschaffen an der es an nichts mangelt. Das ganze Buch strotzt in meinen Augen nur so von Authentizität (klar ich die richtige Situation von den betroffenen Personen nicht, aber ich denke es kommt an die Realität heran, vor allem da die Autorin auch eine poc Person ist). Der Schreibstil war mega angenehm, dieser hat einen direkt eingeladen an der Welt teilzuhaben. I didn't have any entry problems, although it's been a really long time since I read the book, the world was familiar to me and the characters too. In my eyes, a perfect story was created that lacks nothing. The whole book is bursting with authenticity in my eyes (of course I don't know the real situation of the people involved, but I think it comes close to reality, especially since the author is also a poc person). The writing style was super pleasant, it invited you directly to participate in the world. Whether you've read the hate u give or not, this book is super relaxing and shows you that it's the little things that make you happy :)
⚡ AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT ⚡ Angie Thomas I read The Hate U Give in summer 2020 while on a camping trip with my boyfriend, and I fell head over heels in love with this Young Adult book. Before diving into this, I honestly hadn't read a book in its entirety in about 2-3 years. So it's safe to say that Angie Thomas got me out of my reading coma! I absolutely LOVED #TheHateUGive. Don't be fooled by the #YA genre because this book tackles some very heavy topics, such as police brutality, systemic racism, grief, racial ignorance, racial profiling, and more. Starr's character development throughout the book is so beautiful and touching. The writing is a perfect balance of sass, heart, and humour. I absolutely give The Hate U Give 5/5⭐ Concrete Rose is the follow up book to #THUG, but is a prequel. I immediately went to order it after finishing the first book. In #ConcreteRose we get to experience Starr's parents backstory: how Maverick and Lisa came together as a couple. I would give Concrete Rose a 4/5⭐ rating because there was a bit less happening, so although I was hooked, it was marginally less of a page-turner than The Hate U Give. 🎤 ON THE COME UP REVIEW 🎤 Angie Thomas is The It Girl of YA in my eyes. Every single one of her books is practically perfect and incredibly poignant. Concrete Rose remains my favorite, but On the Come Up is fantasic, too. This book follows aspiring rapper Bri throughout her junior year of high school, as racial tensions increase in her city and her self-written songs start blowing up. Bri goes through a journey of finding her voice and remaining authentic while still tackling issues of racial profiling in her music. There’s also good representation of Black love and joy with some cutesie romance subplots and the ongoing, unconditional support Bri receives from her mom and brother. And the love interest is so unexpectedly perfect and makes the book just 1000x more precious. This is my 3rd @angiethomas book and they really never fail me! If I’m in a reading slump then these YA books bring me right out of it. This is actually a prequel to her first book The Hate U Give (THUG) which I didn’t even realise until the end because I’m stupid 😅 But I loved that little twist! The book follows a young man struggling between wanting to do right by his new son and provide for him & not having the means to do so because his neighbourhood is ruled by gangs with no other opportunities. But through it all, a rose can survive in concrete. __ Angie Thomas' writing never fails to ensnare me. Concrete Rose, just like The Hate U Give and On The Come Up, had my mind constantly stuck in the story even when I was supposed to be doing school work 😬 All I wanted was to keep reading. I didn't feel the need to look at page numbers but rather flew past them. I loved Maverick's voice and wanted to stay in the pages of Concrete Rose forever. Even though Maverick made decisions that weren't always the best, he was genuine and loving and a character to root for 😄 I got way too excited when connections between books were made. Especially to Dear Martin by Nic Stone cause I wasn't expecting it. I gasped in the middle of class 😂 I recommend this book and every other thing Angie Thomas has written! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

The novel deals with similar issues and highlights racial profiling, poverty, class and structural hierarchies in American society. The novel shows the importance of family and how they can steer a person on the right path, especially by possessing and implementing strong moral values, despite difficult circumstances. The book doesn’t shy away from the gang culture that pervades society and shows how it can often be a desperate measure for some young people due to extreme poverty or from a lack of guidance growing up. The book also demonstrates the hypocrisy of gun laws in America, where people are proud to bear arms, yet are horrified at gun lyrics in rap music. 📖 On the Come Up is a YA novel that navigates the dynamics of teenage friendships and romances. It also examines female representation in the rap industry and how much harder it is for women in music. On the Come Up has a small connection to The Hate U Give, and it was nice to have a glimpse into the world of Garden Heights again. The Hate U Give is one of my favourite books, so it was hard not to compare the two. This is still a brilliant book and I am very excited about the film adaptation! 📖 Have you read On the Come Up?
WOW. WOW. WOW! I am so late to the party with this book but my god it was worth the wait! 16 year old Starr moves between two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she lives and the fancy school she attends. Starr’s world is shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend... by a police officer! The book is essentially about how Starr deals with the aftermath of losing her best friend but it poses so many important topics and questions about racism, police brutality and discrimination! an incredibly powerful novel about the struggle for justice. A book that has the power to make us realise how much our voices matter! Basically you need to read this book if you haven’t already.
