💭 What’s an underrated series that you love that isn’t shown as much love on bookstagram? Mine is the Girls of Paper and Fire series by Natasha Ngan 🔥🏯🪭🏮⚔️ “When the world denies you choices, you make your own.” Set in a lush Chinese-Malaysian inspired world, Girls is a rich fantasy story about two Paper caste girls (the lowest class of people in Ikhara and fully human) who meet and fall in love while working as concubines to the demon king. Our FMC Lei must learn to navigate her new life in the palace while uncovering some dark truths about society after being ripped from her village for her rare golden eyes that attracted the king. It is a tale of freedom, friendship, trauma and despair - and finding hope in the most hopeless of times. The f/f slow burn romance is one of my favourites of all time and the author’s writing is so beautiful and mesmerising despite the dark topic matter that I will always recommend this series for anyone who loves a powerful queer romance. ♥️ The story does go to some dark places and the trigger list is extensive - with the story mostly surrounding rape culture and oppression - but it’s well worth a read as these women reclaim themselves in a twisted world. There are epic battles, found family and some amazing side characters throughout that make this trilogy a great read. 📚 FEBRUARY WRAP UP 📚 This month was an incredible month, mainly because I stuck to my favourite and most read genre, fantasy. Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan was such a brilliant way to start the month. Great world-building, gorgeous characters and such an engaging plot. Also Lei and Wren have my heart. He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan was a sequel to remember. There were a few moments that ripped my heart out and so much strategy annd politics that my brain exploded but in a good way. The Principle of Moments by Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson. What a book. Everyone should read this book, especially if you’re a fantasy or sci-fi lover. Charming characters and a world that you can become so easily obsessed with. Also the writing and structure of this book is excellent which just makes it that much better. Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner, yet another banger. I fell right back into this world so easily and was completely engrossed in this story. Go read Godkiller and then read this and bask in the glory that is this book. Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan was the only disappointment of the month. The characters and setting were amazing but the pacing of this book is so atrociously disjointed that it made it such a hard read. The Lost Book of the White by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu. Again reading Shadowhunters in 2024? Even demons are no match for Paper Girls with fire in their hearts. ❤🔥 Book: Girls of Fate and Fury Series: Girls of Paper and Fire Author: @girlinthelens Publisher: @hodderbooks I will admit that I've enjoyed the first two books better than this one, but even though it took me a while to finish it I believe that it was a very nice closure to this wonderful story. I've made a mistake by taking a break after the second book and waited so long to read the third one because all the emotions I previously felt evaporated and the plot itself didn't have the same impact as in previous books. Wren and Lei, however, will always have a special place in my heart and their journey will remain a memorable one. This trilogy is a perfect showcase of dealing with trauma and how meaningful it is to have people who support and understand you during the darkest of times. Book Review 📚 Girls of Paper and Fire by @girlinthelens ✨ Short summary: We follow Lei, a young woman living with her father in a small village, under the rule of the Demon King. Humans, half-demons and demons live next to each other, but differences are inevitable and humans are seen as "less" then the other "castes". According to tradition, the King is offered 8 human girls from all over the country each year to serve as his concubines for a year, granting them the title of Paper Girls. This year - there are Nine. 🔥 POSSIBLE SPOILERS FROM HERE - although I've tried not too give too much away, I really want to motivate you to read it! ✨ Personally, I found that when I started reading the warning and dedication, I was already feeling the heaviness of the story. I haven't really read any books about situations where girls don't have the same rights as other people, or where lives are treated as property. 🥀 It starts a little bit slow for me, but every detailed scene builds up the ominous vibe. Even though the whole situation of the book is one I myself and plenty of other girls and women have HOPEFULLY not been confronted with, the way @girlinthelens describes everything, just build immediate empathy and a strong connection to Lei 🌷 Throughout the story, it shows not all people are bad, not everyone treats humans as lesser, and it's these random acts of kindness that make the extremely confrontational and sad story bearable 🎇 When I was halfway, I was getting frustrated, thinking "Where is this going?" Only to realize this was probably intentional, as it spikes in me the same feeling the Paper Girls were most likely experiencing. 😭 The personal growth Lei goes through is amazing! From a scared young girl, alienated from struggles in the capital, to a strong, passionate woman, who stands up for what she believes in. Definitely makes it such a powerful read! ❤️ My favorite phrase in the whole book: There are words in our kiss. I feel them between our lips, unspoken but just as clear as if we had been talking. Or perhaps more clear because we're not.🎇

📚 Girls of Paper and Fire trilogy, by Natasha Ngan 📚 Do you prefer fantasy stand-alones or series? Generally, I prefer series (especially trilogies and duologies), because we get to explore much more of the fantasy world and the characters 🌍 However, sometimes it's great to read a stand-alone and know I won't have to wait for a sequel! I read the Girls of Paper and Fire trilogy and couple of years ago and absolutely loved it 🙌 It's a heart-breaking story, yet also empowering and incredibly intriguing (definitely read the TWs before starting it, though!). Lei and Wren are fantastic protagonists, with so much depth and strength. 🔥 GIRLS OF PAPER AND FIRE BY NATASHA NGAN 🔥 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This world dragged me into it and I did not want to leave. The world building with the caste system was so fascinating and it was so easy to imagine the different levels of the caste system, the anthropomorphic demons, the hybrids of demons and humans and then the humans. Lei as a main character is brilliant and you really feel for her immediately, Wren as a love interest is just outstanding, the image I have of this woman in my head is just gorgeous. The yearning between Lei and Wren was impeccable. The whole Paper Girl lore is so upsetting and is a difficult thing to read about but I think the way the story frames it is important and well done. February 13th . What was your last read? . I’m two thirds done with this series! Just finished book two, Girls of Storm and Shadow. While I didn’t love it as much as the first book, it felt important to the series because it set up further conflict and brought in themes of PTSD from things that happened in the first book. Book 9! The Secret History was an absolute slog to get through and I ended up skip reading the last 200 pages just to get it done with. Even then, I didn't miss anything - the book was so full of pointless bloat, it felt like the author only cared about page numbers rather than story. 1/3 of the book was just repetitive passages about how the main character feels (even though we already know, we've been told over and over) and mundane scenes like parties, eating from scraps and walking across campus in the cold, that did absolutely nothing to connect us with the story or characters. The end made no sense and the final words were boring and unremarkable. It's so rare for me to give a book a low grade but this was a 2/5 at most for me. So, time to move on. Girls of Paper and Fire is new to me and I haven't seen much about it. A couple of weeks ago I saw the Illumicrate special editions of Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan on Twitter, and I thought I just HAVE to have them! Then, as if by fate, the second book in the series appears on Vinted for £2… Needless to say, I bought it. It is an absolutely GORGEOUS book. I have been very critical of special editions on the past, how many of them feel increasingly lazy, but this book and this series as a whole - I cannot put into WORDS how amazing they are, how gorgeous they are, how much time I literally spend STARING at it. The art is incredible, the sprayed edges are SO cute and the art under the dusk jacket is so sweet. | GIRLS OF PAPER & FIRE #1 | de Natasha Ngan @illumicrate Et voilà, ma première relecture de l’année ! Lu en 2018, je replonge ENFIN dans la trilogie de Natasha Ngan (en VO, je ne sais pas s’ils comptent le traduire un jour). Je compte bien enchainer sur les 2 tomes suivants durant le premier trimestre de cette année. Mon ressenti n’a pas vraiment changé. J’avais déjà passé un très bon moment il y a cinq ans et cela se confirme cette année. Natasha Ngan nous offre une immersion captivante dans un monde fantasy intéressant. La population est divisée en trois castes. Certains sont des démons, des humains avec des traits animaux, d’autres sont des croisements hybrides des deux et enfin les derniers, la caste ‘Paper’ ne sont « que » des humains, les plus bas dans la société. Notre héroïne est évidemment une Paper Girl mais elle a la particularité étrange d’avoir des yeux dorés. Je ne vous spoile pas l’intrigue, après tout, le résumé existe pour cela aussi 😉 Mais je peux vous donner quelques mots sur mon ressenti. J’ai trouvé la première moitié assez lente. L’autrice met les bases, nous plonge dans son univers et dans le quotidien des ‘Paper Girl’ qui sont au palais. Le démarrage est donc en apparence tranquille mais la seconde moitié du récit révèle des profondeurs captivantes à mesure que l’intrigue se déploie. L’intérêt masculin en la personne du Roi est évidemment un personnage central de l’histoire mais on en sait très peu sur lui.
