“Gorgeous Gruesome Faces” by Linda Cheng 📚 Reading Goal: 22/50 🌟 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “You think about all the girls like you, who sacrifice so much to be accepted, who bare their souls and twist themselves into impossible shapes for the world to enjoy, only to be torn apart and destroyed.” This book has it all: the complexities of female friendships and queer relationships, the expectations people have of women and of racialized bodies, the merits and detriments of being a celebrity from a young age, heartbreak, anger, gore, ghosts, cults, and the lengths a person will go to to feel loved and accepted. Gorgeous Gruesome Faces was really well paced, and I think Cheng is an excellent writer, but more than that, an excellent horror writer. Some horror authors who write gore and splatterpunk content tend to rely on that alone for the horror aspects of their stories, but while there are some downright gross and disturbing instances of gore (the teeth one was especially vivid in my mind), Cheng doesn’t rely wholly on it to make this book scary. Throughout this book, there’s a lingering sense of unease, a few solid jumpscares that sent chills down my spine, and a really fascinating combination of supernatural horror with human horror. My original goal was to watch as many Oscar nominees as possible and while I did watch 33%, including all of the live action short-film nominees, I lost motivation to watch movies I did not really care about just because some people think they’re good cinema! So instead I’ve been watching 2000s chick flicks and horror comedies, and having a great time. Today’s post however is a mix of movies I enjoy and books I also enjoyed, and ones you can enjoy together, or if you’ve read/watched one and want more. I devoured the last half of this book so quickly! It's always on nights I stay at the shop late AND I happen to be doing a book on audio for my CR that it turns out it's creeier than expected and I find myself a little spooked being alone in an empty store in the dark. This read was no exception! ☆ The cover initial drew me in, and the premise of horror meets kpop sounded so different! 3.5 Stars for this gorgeous gruesome story. There was such an eerie vibe to this. The kpop factor was unique and took a back burner to the true tale. I love when the horror to a story is psychological and people just aren't acting quite normal. I feel like the cuts in timeline help keep me just off balanced enough to not see the next turn it would take. Multiple times I had to stop what I was doing and be like wait WHAT just happened?! Not sure how I feel about the ending. Was interesting enough but didn't fully drawl me in. 🔮Gorgeous Gruesome Faces by Linda Cheng - Book Review🔮 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sunny, Candie, and Mina are on the brink of super stardom when tragedy strikes. Grieving the loss of their friend and co-star, Sunny and Candie part ways for the next two years until they both arrive for a rigorous K-Pop workshop, which Sunny hopes will reinvigorate her career (and maybe her friendship with Candie too). It doesn't take long for Sunny to realize the workshop isn't like it was described. With frequent violent accidents, halls that lead nowhere, and a realization that she's losing track of time, Sunny suspects what happened to Mina is happening again. And Candie might just be responsible. This is a YA sapphic horror with Korean folklore and a K-Pop twist, which is just an incredible premise. It mostly lives up to the hype with a likeable main character in Sunny, her complex frenemey to something more dynamic with Candie, and the overarching mystery of what happened to Mina and whether it's happening again to the girls at the workshop. Cheng doesn't pull her punches when it comes to the horror elements of the story--there are some seriously graphic, disturbing events described in rather gruesome detail. The dialogue is a bit juvenile in comparison, even considering the YA genre. That being said I'm not a fan of horror so this isn't really my thing... I also think that a lot of ya books that try to appeal to the kpop trend can be kind of... Corny.... And the fact that most of the characters here are Chinese and Taiwanese makes things a bit... Weirder. And this isn't really addressed either. Also I did not like the narrator lol. But yeah idk. Still interesting to know. I think making it sapphic makes things slightly better, but I thought this delicious death was more fun. Anyways yeah. Curious to see what horror fans think!

And when girls fall one by one, like flies - it raises questions about who can be trusted at all. A creepy and thrilling debut by author Linda Cheng stars Sunny Lee, a former idol whose time in the spotlight ended two years ago after a scandal got her show cancelled and one of her best friends and group mates, Mina, committed suicide. Since then, she has made no returns to the spotlight nor has she contacted her other groupmate, Candie, since it all went up in flames. Until Candie announced on social media that she will be attending an idol workshop in Atlanta—right in Sunny’s town. This was her chance to get some answers, so she jumps at the opportunity. What follows is a haunting plot line following Sunny through the present interlaced with chapters detailing what truly went down before Mina’s death. I sped through this book within 24 hours. A quick and compelling read, you’ll be begging for more by the end. I was absolutely entranced by the characters, both major and supporting, the history of the horror aspect presented in the plot (not giving spoilers!), and the open ended ending that gives us hope for a sequel. All of it flows together, and combined with Cheng’s relatable and enchanting writing, this is one powerful debut. Two years later of holding in dark and otherworldly secrets, Sunny needs to seek answers about Mina's death from her ex-bandmate, Candie, who is attending a K-pop workshop in her hometown. Although when she follows Candie's tracks, the workshop is not what it seems, and Sunny must survive the ghostly visions, her competitors' sudden bizarre behavior, and shifting grotesque bodies in order to discover the ugly truth. 💭 Review 💭 Cheng did an amazing job mashing up K-pop and folk horror, with commentary about the dark side of idol life, toxic fan culture, and unrealistic beauty standards. While I usually tend towards sunny contemporary and fantasy books, I loved how the horror elements played out in this one, with supernatural twists keeping you guessing at every turn. It's a perfect read for fall and scary season! This book contains death, self harm, and body horror so take care of yourself when reading. This was a fun read. I loved that this was set in the glamorous world of K-Pop and that there were supernatural elements. This had a few creepy moments, a lot of sass and snark from Sunny and a good representation of what it is like to be a teen girl. Mini synopsis: after the end of her TV show, Sunny finds herself grieving the loss of her friend, Mina, & wondering why her other friend, Candie, won’t speak to her. But when she finds out Candie is auditioning for a K-Pop group, she takes a chance & tries out too. And then things get weird! 🌀 I’ve been on a kpop kick so when I saw Fb is was a kpop horror I knew I wanted to read this! This is a hard book to talk about bc it starts out as more of a contemporary story with a focus on this strained female friendship that turns into this dark fairytale horror story! I was not expecting it! The story plays with a duel timeline & I thought it rolled out the details needed from the past to the present expertly. Sooo engaging, I did not wanna stop listening! I liked the slow pace of the beginning providing all the drama that went down between the girls, and the slow reveals of what actually happened to Mina. AND THEN! It got weird. The later part of the book is where I think it will lose people. But to me it was just the right amount of gothic/fever dream feeling that I really enjoy in books. While I didn’t know exactly what was going on, I was having a good time trying to figure it out!
