Both of these books are a bit uncomfortable, a bit chaotic, and have absolutely killer endings. These two also impress me for holding so many things in tension: the extremes of joy and nastiness inside a fandom, the glamorous and the shadowy side of idol-dom. Goldy Moldavsky, Kill the Boy Band 🎤 This was such a fun read. As someone who always loved music, bands and (when I was younger) boy bands, I felt like this book spoke to me on many levels (except the crazy parts). It was a funny, unhinged and an insane experience, a great read. It was really fun to read about the surreal situations the girls got themselves into, their creativity and absurd thought process, their cunning ways of trying to get what they want. I loved the dark humor of it all. There was even a fanfiction moment towards the end that my teenage self really appreciated, although it didn't fit well into the story. I also loved how realistically the book depicted the dedication and love of fangirls and how such adoration can turn obsessive. I appreciated the commentary on the fact that we don't actually know the people we idolize and the book pointing out that people might obsess over bands to fill a void in their heart. It was a great read: surprising, sometimes shocking, had great humor. It shed light on the world of fangirls and boy bands, and on the fact that young girls are never taken seriously. Which is why they can get away with a lot. I liked it. More Eurovision goodies: these Chebureki are savory handpies that I served with green Ajika. The taste reminded me of the Turkish food I grew up with (yes, as German you grow up with a lot of Turkish food in case you didn't know 😁). Possibly the best thing from my Ukrainian food fest 🇺🇦. Did you watch and enjoy the ESC this year? Who were your faves? Mine were Norway, Armenia, Cyprus and Germany. I also liked Sweden but isn't it always a bit disappointing seeing a winner crowned more so by the jury vote than the audience? And did Germany truly deserve the last spot, I felt like this year they were for once not terrible... I chose a fluffy book to read over this hectic weekend, a YA to be precise, and I never read YA, avoid it even. So hear me out: Goldy Moldavsky's concepts just sound so enticing, I wanted to put 3 of her books on my TBR so far and the YA label always stopped me. But when I wanted something easy and musically inclined, I decided to give "Kill the Boy Band" a go. And I liked it. Yes, the characters and the writing weren't always what I loved, I had to shut up and roll with a few things here. But overall this was better than most YA I had sampled in recent years. It was funny, sassy, edgy, even daring. A great love letter to while also a satirical deconstruction of fan culture, obsession, the boy band phenomenon and teenage girls. Missing (adult) bite in some areas but overall it worked for me and the ending might forgive some character writing short comings. I will even read another Moldavsky, that's how much I liked this. No one is more surprised than me 🙃. Gotta say, this will not become a trend but it's good to trust your gut sometimes and take that step out of your comfort zone if the right book calls you. These two pair nicely. I liked the front half of Fangirls (non-fiction) the best, as it was more focused on fandom. The second half seemed to me more interested in the artists, and I was in it for the fans. :) Contrariwise, it was the end of Kill the Boy Band (YA) which really worked for me. The main character had a nice twist which I didn't see coming. My biggest difficulty with KTBB was the age of the main characters. The narrative voice sounded too self-aware to be really 15. I liked it better pretending they were 17/18. With both of these books I enjoyed the tension between loving being a fan and feeling a bit unsettled by some fan behaviors. I also appreciated that both authors were clearly fans themselves and so were exploring these feelings from an inside view. One of my favorite stand alone novels is ‘Kill the BoyBand’ by Goldy Moldavsky. I’ve talked about it before and I will continue to recommend it to people who used to, or still are, fanpeople or in fandoms. This is especially from the perspective of boy bands. Good morning my lovely readers! In honour of my baby Harry Styles' 29th birthday today, I'm sharing my favourite book about fan culture, which is essentially a hilarious satire of One Direction. If you need me tonight, I'll be enviously watching a live stream of his birthday concert in Palm Springs. I read Kill the Boy Band book nearly 7 years ago (yikes!!) but it still makes it onto my favourites list. I'm honestly a bigger fan of One Direction now than I was at the time, but I'm a fangirl at heart and will be for life, so the book still resonated very heavily with me. 🎤 Kill the Boy Band by Goldy Moldavsky 🎤 I picked this up last Friday on my #LibraryFriday trip with @brookereviewsbooks almost entirely because of the title. Well it’s safe to say that was a good pick because I really enjoyed this wild book. This is like a fanfic/parody of fanatic culture. It was a silly and wild ride that I enjoyed almost every minute of. You have to know going in that these girls are not likable. It was hard to believe with all the crazy stuff happening that they were only like 15. The main girl whose perspective this is from (I don’t think we ever actually get her real name) was honestly my least favorite. But she made for a pretty good unreliable narrator. This wasn’t a life changing book and probably not a new favorite or anything but I’m happy I read it! I love books featuring boy bands so I included two that I also enjoyed but were VERY different from this one 😂 Anyone have a crazy story about something you’ve done as a fan?

Throw back to books that were published (and read) long, long ago but were actually really good and I want people to talk about them. Featuring: ✨Kill The Boy Band by Goldy Moldavsky ✨Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff ✨Dark Lord by Jamie Thomson (or is it?) . There’s always a creative read available for every reading level. But ya’ll, these are really GOOD. . Kill The Boy Band calls back to that time in 2012 when every middle school girl was obsessed with One Direction. This book is a spin on that phenomenon where all the girls are obsessed with the “Ruperts” boy band… until things go very wrong. This is honestly the funniest book I’ve ever read… and I read this back in middle school. . Illuminae has evil space corporations, evil AI machines, zombies, and love. Also it’s not written like a normal book - some “chapters” are video transcriptions, others visual word art, or text messages, or word clouds. It really gives the story an investigative flare since the main character is uncovering and collecting proof of a conspiracy. And I read this thick book in like two days, and then immediately bought the rest of the trilogy so this one is super addictive. . Dark Lord is from my elementary years when I didn’t do much reading. It’s about the Dark Lord of the universe getting stuck on earth in the body of a middle school boy named Dirk Lloyd. Dirk is dramatic and evil (despite having zero power), but eventually learns the power of friendship (aww). I went to my first Boston (indie) bookstore on saturday morning to check out the 40% off used book sale @brooklinebooksmith and it was definitely worth the hype. Not only did I get amazing deals on the used books, but they have SO MUCH cute stuff from small and well-loved businesses in the gift area that I *may have* fallen victim to (very happily). The first slide are all the books I picked up for myself (Kill The Boy Band & Maus were used and on my TBR) — I couldn’t believe The Long Game was sold there! And I didn’t know a mass market paperback existed??? Second slide are books I got for work — I am a graduate assistant for LGBTQ+ Student Outreach and Support for my school and we’re building a library of queer and trans books, so this was my main mission and I definitely succeeded (for ~$30!!!!!). Habár az élénk rózsaszín felirat vonzotta a tekintetemet hozzá, a szinopszis vett rá, hogy megvegyem. A történetben egy tinilánycsapat fanatikusan rajong egy tehetségkutató műsorban összeeszkábált banda iránt, akiknek a környéken lesz koncertjük. A lányok, miután kiderítik, melyik hotelben szállnak meg a fiúk, abban a reményben, hogy összefutnak velük, ugyanott foglalnak szállást, hogy másnap megnézhessék a fellépésüket is. Egy hihetetlen fordulatos és morbid történetről van szó, ami az extrém végletekig fajuló tinédzserkori rajongást parodizálja ki, és bár ezt sokak lehet sértőnek találják, én nagyon élveztem az olvasását akkoriban. Rengeteget nevettem és szörnyülködtem rajta egyaránt, így nagyon várom, hogy újraolvassam, ugyanis kifejezetten pozitív emlékeim vannak róla.🥰 🇬🇧 Goldy Moldavsky's young adult novel was pretty much an impulse buy when I spotted it on one of the bookstore's shelves many years ago. Although it was the bold, hot pink text that caught my attention, the synopsis convinced me to buy it. In the story a group of teenage girls are fanatically in love with a talent show-made boy band who will have a concert in the area. After discovering which hotel will the boy group stay in, the girls book a room there as well in the hopes of meeting them there before they attend the concert. This story that parodies the extremities of teenage fanaticism is quite morbid at times and full of suprises. Some might even find it to be offensive, however I thoroughly enjoyed reading it at the time. Kill the boy band by Goldy Moldavsky 💕 ☆ 4/5 ☆ This book was a lot of fun. It also brought back the nostalgia of being a tween/young teen and seeing all of the girls around me obsess over 1D. A fast paced storyline with morally grey characters - what’s not to love? Ok, the only thing I perhaps DIDNT love was that this book felt similar to Goldy’s The Mary Shelley Club in its morally grey-ness. But maybe I just read these books too close together. Kill The Boyband By: Goldy Moldavsky Never judge a book by its cover. Something that I completely did and am not too mad about. When I originally grabbed this book I was expecting far more violence and… well all together a different story. But after reading it and experiencing it, I was surprised. Even though it was nothing like I expected I liked it. However, it is written for a VERY specific demographic of people. If you have never been a fan person of a group, you will not fully understand. I have seen so many reviews that have bashed the book for some of the loose writing, but the overall story isn't that bad. The only thing that the people are lacking is that they don’t understand the internal pull of being a fan. You almost need that background to understand the drastic actions of the people in the book. Kill The Boy Band by @goldywrites 5⭐️ So you all know I loved The Mary Shelly Club and this book is so different but still just as amazing and addicting. 4 BFFs who love the British Boy Band The Ruperts, they couldn’t get tickets to their Thanksgiving Special in NYC but end up booking a room at the same hotel they boys are staying and hoping to run into them…but things take a hard left turn when they end up kidnapping one of the boys and hold him hostage, each friend has a reason for not letting him go and then he ends up dead. Who killed him and what are they going to do now. This was actually a great dark comedy as well. These girls are alittle unhinged but what a wild story that no one will believe. My Heart is a Chainsaw by @stephengrahamjones 4⭐️ This is my second book by this author and while the last book wasn’t really one I could connect with, this book was definitely the one I could. Another throwback reference to old school slasher, final girls, unreliable narrator and a lot of fun. Jade is someone no pays attention to, she doesn’t know how to communicate with people unless she is going into detail about horror movies and how everything in happening in a life relates. 4th or July is coming and Jade knows something is coming, a massacre will occur but how will get anyone to believe her. ☀️July TBR☀️ This July I’m trying something a little different! Usually I create a TBR stack with more books than I’ll be able to read - that way I can choose based on my mood. This month though I’ve picked out 8 books, which is a little below my typical monthly average. I decided to do this because I have several books in the mail and on hold at my library. Since I don’t know when they’ll arrive/become available I figured I would save some spots on my TBR for them! As the stack shows, I’m definitely in the mood for some thrillers! Malibu Rising and All the Light We Cannot See are the two exceptions - Malibu Rising for obvious reasons (namely that I’m incapable of waiting to read TJR’s new book!) and All the Light We Cannot See because I’ve heard such good things about it and figured I needed at least one other non-thriller on my July TBR. 🎤BOYBAND BOOKS🎤 In anticipation for 𝐈𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐎𝐮𝐭 by Sophie Gonzales and Cale Dietrich, I’ve been reading some other books about boy bands. Yes, the book doesn’t come out for another 178 days (no I’m not counting!). Who am I kidding? I just wanted an excuse to rave about my favourite little niche of YA books. ☆ Grace and the Fever by Zan Romanoff ☆ I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman ☆ Kill The Boyband by Goldie Moldavsky I honestly think boybands are a well of inspiration and I will always be ready to read stories about them. The fan focus in these novels is great - as a fan myself it felt totally authentic. All three stories centre on teenage girls who find themselves infiltrating their favourite bands, to different degrees of success and/or failure, essentially living out self insert fan-fiction dreams. At times, it shined a light on the cringiest parts of boyband fandom. This was both incredibly humbling and weirdly nostalgic. I wanted to take a time machine back to a time when a certain British boyband wasn’t on “hiatus” after reading these. Kill The Boyband was on the lighter side to the others, an over-the-top black comedy. It was filled with crazed fans, murder and a kidnapped boyband. It was fun, and engaging. I Was Born For This was probably my favourite of the three, though it’s hard to pick because they all had their merits. These stories totally lean into the obvious inspiration - I won’t name names but it’s easy to assign roles to the fictional and I have fun doing that. The biggest disappointment to me was that all of them made some pretty pointed digs at a certain group of fans. If you’re going to write about fandom, you need to embrace every aspect of it. Don’t think I didn’t catch the not-so-subtle dig at Larry Stylinson fans in I Was Born For This or Kill The Boyband. Grace and the Fever was the only one that handled that topic with respect, the protagonist being a self proclaimed believer of the Larry equivalent for fictional the Fever band. Needless to say, I am incredibly excited for the next instalment in this genre, which promises a legitimate romance between two members of the band.

Cliché in its representation of ‘boy bands and their avid fans’, this only adds to the comedic value, the characters are oblivious to their craziness.
