I thought the local superstition surrounding The Birds was woven into the main mystery so beautifully. It all felt very cohesive. I loved The Guest List by Lucy Foley, but I think The Midnight Feast is my new favorite novel by Lucy Foley! Highly recommend this book, this will be the perfect addition to your summer reading list! I loved the Guest List and the Hunting Party and when I saw the Midnight Feast pop up I had to request it. Francesca's grandfather recently passed away and left the manor to her, and she's renovated it to be a resort for the elite. Opening weekend doesn't end the way she planned, but instead, with the manor enveloped in flames and a death toll. The book follows Francesca, her husband the architect, a mystery guest, and the kitchen help during the weekend - as it's slowly revealed the horrors that happened on that land in the past, and now the present. This book was a slow burn, and very atmospheric. I've read The Guest List and The Paris Apartment, and loved them. However, this one is slower and took more time to get into. I did love the folklore aspect, and the reveals of how all of the characters are unwittingly connected. ☁️The Guest List by Lucy Foley☁️ A 5 ⭐️ read! It‘s definitely in my top 10 favourite books! It is written so well, the plot is so original and engaging, and the suspense is built so well. I was constantly on the edge of my seat so much so that I couldn’t put the book down and finished it in one sitting! It is the perfect mystery book. I love how the motives were slowly revealed. It is clear that the characters whose perspectives we’re reading from are all going to be suspects but each of their potential motives aren’t made clear straight away! Everything is revealed so perfectly. Finding out the killer’s motive right at the end made the ending that much more shocking. I loved it! I like the time jumps between the day before the wedding and the day of the wedding, I think it makes the story more intense. I love how we didn’t actually find out who got killed until near the end. Not knowing who’s been killed straight away just makes the book more suspenseful. Each character was crafted perfectly and I love that we get to see things from so many different perspectives. In all honesty, there were no obvious flaws for me. I would have liked to have seen more of the fallout after the death and wrongful arrest - I had a few questions about the future of some of the characters but it didn’t ruin the reading experience for me not seeing more of what happened after the events of the murder unfolded. I really recommend this book, it’s fantastic! Two for Tuesday- two thrillers/horror (not really sure what to classify How to Sell a Haunted House as) that I recently finished. I'm on a thriller kick at the moment and realized it's been a bit since I last posted. I blazed through The Hunting Party, I loved it but found it to be a little predictable. I liked the story and predictably wasn't a negative for me in this. Though I will say it is a bit weird reading a book that takes place during a snow storm when I'm in a hot climate. Summer weather has spring up in the Pacific Northwest recently. I almost did not finish How to Sell a Haunted House. I got to a point where it felt really laughable when I didn't think it was meant to be, then something changed. I'm telling you I was really close to putting it down. Haunted puppets. I think I can pinpoint when things shifted, but I also don't want to give anything away. Don't read this if you have a fear of puppets, dolls, or clowns! I liked both of these books but am definitely more of a traditional thriller person! Have you read these? What did you think?
✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨ I was really excited to read The Midnight Feast, but really struggled making it through to the end. The story started off interesting for the first few chapters, and then got so bogged down in multiple characters backstories that it felt like nothing interesting was happening for far too long. Things definitely picked back up towards the end, but by the I was so bored I just wanted to finish the story and be done with it. I did like the paranormal elements, and found a few of the characters real identities and reasons for being at The Manor interesting, but there were just too many characters involved in the secret from the past and doing devious things to make it at all believable (it also got a little confusing). This seems like it would have been a better novella than full book. I will definitely give Lucy Foley another try in the future; this book just wasn't for me. The Paris Apartment - Lucy Foley 3/5 Stars This was my second Lucy Foley book, and I am learning that her writing style is centered around building anticipation and suspense with the dramatic - dark shadows that she creates around the individual characters. Her books are dark and moody, and I love that. The story follows Jess, a woman who needs a fresh start for reasons that you will soon learn and flees to Paris. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no. Only when she shows up to his luxurious apartment, she is left with not only the question of how can he afford this but where is Ben? There is a trail of suspense surrounding Ben’s disappearance - All neighbors are all suspects, and everyone knows something they’re not telling Jess. While the story captivates the reader with alternating viewpoints and intriguing character development, I found myself with a few lingering questions that could have been better explained. I also felt that this book took longer to get into than other books. Despite all of this, I would still recommend ‘The Paris Apartment,’ but know that this book is more of a mystery rather than a faced paced thriller. I would suggest downloading the audiobook version of this because the multiple character viewpoints are a nice, entertaining component to this book. The Paris Apartment 📚 Where secrets linger in every corner and intertwine with the beauty of the city. Who knows what secrets lie behind those elegant doors. 🚪🗝️🍷🥐🇫🇷 I’ve been on a smutty fairy train that I needed to get off and shake things up. There were a few twist and the ending I wasn’t expecting. Overall, I enjoyed it but I found the first 250 pages to be a bit dull and drug on. Everything was jammed into about 100 pages and then ended abruptly. I feel the ending could have been a little longer and a follow up with more of Ben’s side. The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley Predictive text game,finish the sentence... My current read is about .... A group of friends go away together to see in the New Year. Told from multiple people and different timelines, with the short chapters, this format worked well. I enjoyed the build-up to find out who had been killed. I didn't particularly like the characters, but I did like their backstorys. The ending was a bit predictable, maybe because of only a few characters. Although I had guessed it, it didn't spoil anything. It's worth a read if you love these types of books. My first book club book for Common Reads and my first thriller! 🌷 Book: The Hunting Party Author: Lucy Foley Genre: Thriller Rating: 3/5 Although I didn't end up loving The Hunting Party, I'm glad I took a chance on a genre I don't usually reach for. I enjoyed following these characters through their multiple points of view as they reunite in the Scottish Highlands for a New Years Eve party. I visited the Scottish Highlands when I studied abroad in college, so I could easily conjure images of the rolling fills and vast isolation. The story itself was more drawn out than it needed to be. It almost worked because of the multiple povs and short chapters, but I could still feel a sense of stalling. Since this was my first thriller, I was just along for the ride and I did not guess who committed the murder. I am curious if this story might've been more interesting if we had only read Heather's pov and learned everything about the guests through her eyes. I enjoyed discussing this book with the @eliedelaney ‘s Common Reads book club in the Boston Commons this past weekend. We chatted about our thoughts on the story, had some great snacks (including Swedish candy), and met some adorable puppies (as seen in the video above)! The Guest List has been one of my favourite thrillers for the last few years so fair to say I was super excited for Lucy's latest novel, The Midnight Feast. 🔥 Synopsis: Guests gather for the opening of the Manor, the luxurious mindfulness retreat hosted by the glamorous Francesca Meadows. Lucy Foley is a master of suspense. The setting for the story is moody, dark and a perfect t read for a stormy, rainy day. A murder takes place on a secluded island and now we must go back to a few days prior to figure out who of the small group did it! This novel flips between various timelines and has several different points of views. However it is easy to keep track of the storyline as we have just a few characters on this secluded island. There’s a term in story telling that is called “fifth business” it refers to a character that is the key to the story but the character isn’t highlighted or prominent in the actual narrative. 💍SEZNAM HOSTŮ💍 - 👤Autor/ka: Lucy Foley 🖇️Počet stran: 344 🔎Žánr: detektivní, thriller - ANOTACE: v komentářích - RECENZE: Přijde mi to hodně nevhodné říct, ale pardon fakt to jinak asi nejde. Je to poprvé, co mám pocit, jakoby nějaká kniha byla zbytečná. Já po dočtení momentálně mám v sobě úplnou prázdnotu, je mi všechno jedno a opravdu mi tak 310 stran přišlo naprosto zbytečných, vytrhala bych to a nechala bych tu třeba 30 stran. Dobře, člověk by nechápal všechny možné souvislosti, ale já si myslím, že je to fakt ve finále jedno… Abych se vyjádřila trochu srozumitelněji: od začátku víme, že se má konat svatba, kde má někdo zemřít, což mě navnadilo na čtení po dobu takových 50 stran, pak už to bylo horší. Zhruba tak 280 stran se prostě a jednoduše nedělo nic. Seznamování s postavami, s jejich situacemi, zázemím, okolím a vším možným. Prostě samé okecávky, které byly sice důležité pro finální vyvrcholení, ale za mě celé tyto okecávky byly napsané naprosto nezáživně a opravdu na mě působí takovým zbytečným dojmem. No a pak se teda dostáváme k hlavnímu vyvrcholení a také k následnému rozuzlení, kdy jsem si opravdu chvíli říkala, že ta kniha je dobrá, jenže pak najednou byl konec. Úplný konec knihy a mně bylo již opravdu vše jedno a všechno nadšení rázem opadlo. Jestli hledáte nějaký dobrý thriller, jste bohužel na špatném místě. Tato knihy má od thrilleru opravdu daleko a od dobré knihy poměrně také 😀 Ale zase abych pravdu řekla, posledních 140 stran jsem již zfoukla poměrně rychle, určitě z důvodu krátkých kapitol, někdy také, že se zde konečně něco dělo a z velké části pravděpodobně také, z vidiny další knihy, kterou budu moct rozečíst. I thought the narrators were very good, particularly the one representing Jess. With all the secrets, lies, and, at the centre of it all, the disappearance of investigative journalist Benjamin Daniels, this story had me captivated from the beginning. Jess is Ben's sister who has travelled out to Paris to stay with him for a while since life back home in the UK isn't working out too well for her. Only when she arrives Ben isn't there, and he isn't answering his phone or replying to any of her messages. The opulent apartment building her brother lives in astounds Jess; it even has a concierge...who is adamant she isn't going to grant that girl access, "she has no business being here." Jess gains access to Ben's apartment using less conventional methods. However, there's still no sign of him, and Jess begins to worry when she discovers that he's left his wallet and keys behind. As she meets the residents of the neighbouring apartments, she begins to question if they are more aware of her brother's whereabouts than they are letting on. As the story continues, we follow Jess as she searches for her brother, discovering additional mysteries along the way, putting herself in danger and upending everything for the other residents of The Paris Apartment. I really enjoyed this, and I was drawn in from the start. I did feel it lost its way a little toward the middle of the book, where I was willing the story to get a move on, but then the intrigue picked back up for the end. ✨ The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley ✨ My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐💫 Jess hopes to flee her life in London and informs her half-brother, Benjamin Daniels, that she is on her way to Paris to meet him. Ben,who works as a journalist and writes reviews for restaurants and travelling working hard to convert into an investigative journalist. He provides her the address details of his apartment through a voice note, that was cut short for some reason. When Jess arrives in Paris late at night, she is unable to locate Ben or contact Police to file a case regarding Ben's disappearance. And now she wants to find her brother using the few clues that she could find. The Paris Apartment, book is full of mysteries, secrets and suspicions, but it didn't provide me with the same sense of excitement that comes from reading a suspense thriller. Everyone in the flats appears suspicious and has a secret to hide. The book contains multiple POV, which I do not particularly enjoy. MARPLE by twelve great writers. Agatha Christie's Miss Marple books were some of the first 'adult' books that I read. In 2020 I started picking them back up as I find them soothing to read when the world is challenging. So this was an ideal book to pick up and I can't believe that it sat on my shelf for so long. These were 12 great writers and I'm sure a lot of their names will be familiar.. Naomi Alderman, Lucy Foley, Leigh Bardugo, Natalie Haynes. I do like the slower pace of the full length novel, these were all short stories so the crime and detection were quite quickly paced. A few of the stories struggled to portray Miss Marple with quite the same unassuming tone as Agatha Christie, maybe a little bit of smugness crept in, but it was not overwhelming. I loved meeting again all the familiar characters, not just Miss Marple, but her nephew Raymond (who will always be played by Richard E Grant in my imagination) and Dolly Bantry, amount others. I also enjoyed seeing Miss Marple travelling more, including to New York, all the different settings for the stories were fantastic. I'm sure Agatha Christie herself would be delighted by this read! I wasn’t sure what exactly I was getting myself into after the first few chapters — Lucy blends magical folklore with psychological thriller in this fantastic read. The more I read, the more I couldn’t stop reading. Told from multiple viewpoints and timelines, you’ll find yourself craving justice, rooting for the underdog, and realizing you don’t know near as much as you think you did. This book was genuinely good til the last page. Out 6/18 in the US! You definitely want to grab this one. Multiple POV are usually hit or miss for me but I really enjoyed them and the different timelines because Lucy made it so easy to follow along! The setting was easy to picture as well and made me get fully invested in the storyline! I was able to predict one twist at the end but the other twists that popped up I was NOT expecting! I have read all of Lucy Foleys books and I have to say that this one is my new favorite! I can’t wait for everyone to read this book! Thank you @netgalley for the early release! Παρουσίαση βιβλίου Τελευταίο Γράμμα από το Βόσπορο της @lucyfoleyauthor Εκδόσεις @minoasbooks Τη Lucy Foley τη γνώρισα μέσα από τα βιβλία μυστηρίου της και κάτι στη γραφή της με έχει κάνει να αναζητώ αυτόματα κάθε της βιβλίο. Οπότε βλέποντας αυτό το βιβλίο το οποίο είναι τελείως διαφορετικό από τα προηγούμενα δεν υπήρχε περίπτωση να μη το διαβάσω! Γραφή ζωντανή, γεμάτη εικόνες κι αρώματα. Η συγγραφέας μέσα από την ιστορία της αποφασίζει να μιλήσει για μια πλευρά της ιστορίας για την οποία γνωρίζω λίγες και σκόρπιες πληροφορίες. Για την κατοχή της Τουρκίας από τις συμμαχικές δυνάμεις μετά το τέλος του Α Π.Π. όπως και για τη γενοκτονία των Αρμενίων, καταφέρνοντας παράλληλα να ρίξει λίγο φως στα γεγονότα που ακολούθησαν. Όλα αυτά στο φόντο ενός έρωτα ανάμεσα στη Νουρ και τον Τζορτζ. Το ρομαντικό κομμάτι μάλλον μου πέρασε λίγο επίπεδο για να είμαι ειλικρινής ωστόσο το ιστορικό υπόβαθρο το εκτίμησα αρκετά. Ειδικά αφού στάθηκε αφορμή να ψάξω κάποια πράγματα λίγο παραπάνω.
