I’m here to tell you whatever you build will be ruined, so make it beautiful.” This quote just made think of what’s going on right now with students across the nation protesting, refusing to stay silent, and having more courage and intellect than our own government officials while they just continue on with their hypocrisy (not surprising). We have been angry, but we are, those students are, building something beautiful despite being harmed and ruined by this country, they are making history and making something beautiful out of this shit cycle we are always in. I loved Hala Alyan’s THE TWENTY-NINTH YEAR and was so excited for THE MOON THAT TURNS YOU BACK. Eternally thankful for @literarylaila for surprising me with a copy AND getting it signed by Hala Alyan at @latimesfob. Book friends are some kind of special!!!! 💗 Hala Alyan reflects quietly, but also boldly on displacement, Palest*nian diaspora, violence, love, womanhood, and grief (tw: infertility, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy). It’s a heartbreaking and beautiful collection with parts that I didn’t completely understand, but was still completely captivated by them. Some favorites: ‘Half-life in Exile’ ‘Naturalized’ ‘Bore’ ‘Relapse’ ‘Spoiler’ all interactive fiction pieces Definitely worth a second read and a perfect addition to your home library. “Be lucky. Try to make it to the morning. Try to find your heart in the newsprint. Please. I’d rather be alive than holy. I don’t have time to write about the soul. There are bodies to count. There’s a man wearing his wedding tuxedo to sleep in case I meet God and there’s a brick of light before each bombing.”

📚 T h r e e 📚 . It’s time for a Thursday three 😊 I’m focusing on one of my fave tropes today - found family! . Makes me feel all warm and smiley when a book character finds the connections and love they’ve been seeking. A lot of characters feel like they are the odd one out or marginalised in some way, so a found family gives them assurance that they are accepted and wanted. . 💜 The House In The Cerulean Sea - the epitome of the found family trope! The task Linus Baker has been given leads him into the most unusual family set up. This book is absolutely brimming with amazing-ness you must read it if you haven’t! . 💛 The Toymakers - cast out by her own family Cathy finds solace in a magical toy shop during WW1. A gripping book, I was totally swept away. . 💙 Are We All Lemmings And Snowflakes - such a brilliant YA by @hollybourneya following Olive and the friends she makes as a mental health inpatient. Whether that's sneaking in a reading session, buying a book, dressing up, or whatever it is! I'd love to know what you got up to - even if you didn't get a chance to celebrate properly. I attended the first meeting of our new book club at the UCT Library, run by the library buddies! I'm so excited about it finally being a thing and I hope to see it grow into an awesome space! • These gorgeous Book Page Holders were handcrafted by my awesome dad, @dj.woodables, and I sometimes stock them for my lil business, @mystic.creations.by.m, too. They are really so handy, and I love my one so much - in the first picture. It's made of a beautiful exotic African wood called Ofram. It's just too gorgeous! • So let me know if you got up to anything cool for World Book Day!

“I would like to be granted an audience with the architect of longing. It isn’t my first time casting this wish out into the distance, but I would like for the wish to be taken seriously this time around by whoever is in charge of such things.“ I think about longing but not as it relates to romantic heartbreak. Where the kindest of us gets to stay a little bit longer, be closer to earth just for a second more. I think about longing when I showed my cousin my wedding dress and she immediately texted me that she’s crying happy tears and she thought about my mom. I think about longing when my friend at my bridal fitting asked me if I’m walking down the aisle with my dad and I immediately answered no—in my head. But what came out was a forced, “yeah, why not.” I think about longing where the displaced, the disadvantaged, and the disabled are deserving of this life. But why does it always feel like longing is a kind of hope with no direction? So yeah, I’d like to have an audience with the architect of longing. I’m taking my time with Hanif’s new book because I don’t know how soon we’ll get another one. I’ve been loving reading it slowly which l’ve found works best for me when it comes to his books (tried the audiobooks, but it just wasn’t sticking to me)

Continuing the trend of reading backlists of beloved authors, I picked This Must be the Place by Maggie O’Farrell from a thrift book market. A multi-generational tale which shifts focus between different people and timelines, it tells the story of Daniel and Claudette. Claudette is an ultra famous actress who vanished off the face of the earth with her son and when Daniel meets her in rural Ireland, they fall irrevocably in love. But Daniel himself has a few demons to face and whether the couple is able to overcome all these hurdles is the main crux of the book. The writing is signature O’Farrell style - immersive, lyrical, funny, making even the mundane beautiful. Her previous books (Hamnet, Marriage Portrait) showed her prowess in taking historical figures and making them extremely human. This one takes ordinary people with ordinary flaws, navigating the sometimes extraordinary intricacies of relationships. Jumping between Ireland, USA and the UK, each chapter unravels the past and present of each character, focusing on the relationships and trauma behind the marriage of Daniel and Claudette, and their impact on everyone around the couple. I enjoyed the book thanks to the writing and the character sketches, specially that of Claudette whose tenacity and will was inspiring. Only gripe is that towards the end, the jumping about of the timelines and randomly characters got exhausting.

Bogowie w mroku" to pierwsza z trzech książek jakie będą wydane z tytułowym bohaterem, który uznawany jest za antybohatera o mrocznej i tajemniczej naturze. Obecnie jeszcze czytam drugi tom przygód pewnego barbarzyńcy więc Kane będzie musiał cierpliwie poczekać na swoją kolej nim zabierze mnie w podróż ku przygodzie. [book world you didn’t expect to become obsessed with?] 📚𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪📚 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝑯𝒂𝒘𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒏𝒆 𝑏𝑦 𝐽𝑒𝑛𝑛𝑖𝑓𝑒𝑟 𝐿𝑦𝑛𝑛 𝐵𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑠 (JLB) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you @penguinbookssouthafrica for sending me this copy for a review! • After thoroughly enjoying The Inheritance Games (TIG) trilogy, even though it’s not my typical genre (i.e. fantasy/romance), I was so excited when I heard there was more coming to this world in The Brothers Hawthorne, and I knew I had to read it - I wasn’t disappointed. JLB gave us everything we needed with this follow up to TIG. I went in ready to love it, and I did. I can’t wait to read more from her, and I am especially excited for The Grandest Game later this year! • The Brothers Hawthorne gave us a new perspective to view the world from - past the initial chaos of the TIG books, we get to read from both Jameson & Grayson’s POVs, which added so much depth to the experience. (I’ve realised I’m quite the fan of multi-POV books.) We get more insight to the brothers’ relationships with each other, which I really enjoyed. • Once again, we have a well thought out and well-written story, with an intrigue that keeps you turning the pages, desperate to figure it all out. Each character is fighting their own battles and have such depth. • If you still haven’t read the TIG trilogy, I seriously recommend you pick them up, and add this one to the pile too. Honestly, I feel like anyone could enjoy these books, but I’d probably recommend it mainly to people who love puzzles and games, and who love a story with constant twists and enjoy trying to figure out the story as you go. You’ll be turning the pages faster than normal. Yes, the original 3 books were good enough to have stopped with The Final Gambit, but I am very grateful to have had more of the Hawthornes to enjoy. I hope you feel the same!

Polityka w fikcji literackiej - lubicie takie motywy? "Jej sprawa" to drugi tom perypetii Hanny Osul, czyli pani prokurator z Wrocławia, którą mieliśmy okazję poznać w "Okaleczonych". Debiut Anny Kaczanowskiej czytało mi się przyjemnie, a w recenzji napisałam wówczas, że widzę tu potencjał na dalsze poprowadzenie postaci Hani oraz podkomisarza Mirosława Hetskiego. Kiedy więc pojawiła się kontynuacja, byłam bardzo ciekawa kierunku, jaki obierze autorka. I muszę przyznać, że mnie zaskoczył! Choć główni bohaterowie łączą obie powieści, a ponadto kontynuowany jest wątek śmierci rodziny kobiety, to "Jej sprawa" posiada inny klimat, niż "Okaleczone"; inaczej zbudowaną fabułę. Zdecydowanie nie jest to książka odtwórcza. W pierwszym tomie autorka zabrała nas na przykład do małomiasteczkowej społeczności, tutaj zaś trafiamy do tętniącej życiem Warszawy, w sam środek politycznych potyczek. Nagły zgon ministra sprawiedliwości stawia na nogi policję i prokuraturę, ale gorąco jest również w sejmowych i rządowych kuluarach. Czy zbrodnia miała charakter polityczny, czy jednak prywatny? Na jaw wychodzą zaskakujące fakty z życia ofiary, a Hanna będzie musiała poukładać tę łamigłówkę w wyjątkowo dla niej trudnych okolicznościach... Autorka zgrabnie odnalazła się w tym gąszczu wielkiego świata zestawionego z prywatnymi sprawami poszczególnych postaci. Wątek polityczny dla mnie jest miłą odmianą, bo rzadko czytam fikcję literacką na takie tematy. Został on poprowadzony ciekawie, a śledztwo nie zwalnia tempa. Wracając jeszcze na chwilę do zestawienia z "Okaleczonymi" - tam sprawca był dość łatwy do wykrycia, natomiast w "Jej sprawie" nitki intrygi są bardzo sprytnie poplątane. Do samego końca nie byłam pewna, jak to wszystko się ułoży, a kolejne zwroty akcji udanie budowały obraz całości. [What was your first read of 2024?] 📚𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪📚 𝑨 𝑾𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑼𝒔 𝑏𝑦 𝑇𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑒 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑒 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars) Thank you @penguinbookssouthafrica for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review. This was my last read of 2023 and first read of 2024. • This was my first read of Tillie Cole's and I went in pretty blind, but if anything I think that just made it better. She has a way of making you really feel the emotions and connect to the characters. This story takes you on a real journey and I can guarantee it will be painful but worth it. So have your tissues ready! • I thought it was a beuatifully heart-breaking story and very well-written. It drew me in and kept me turning the pages. I thought I knew where it was going, but I honestly couldn’t have guessed the way it actually went. It broke my heart in all the right ways and I really enjoyed it. I especially loved the character's and their relationships. Think broken but beautiful. I also think having it dual-POV really added so much to the story. • I definitely recommend it to those who love a good heartbreaking romance, with a bad-boy good-girl trope, and especially if you love music and colours in any form. Just be ready to feel every emotion possible.

Zapewne każdy miłośnik fantasy, zna jego przygody albo przynajmniej o nich słyszał więc tutaj nie będę się rozwodził na ich streszczeniu. Wydanie to jest znakomitą pozycją nie tylko dla tych którzy znają losy Conana ale też dla tych którzy chcieliby się zapoznać z jego przygodami. Szczególnie że jest świetnie dopracowane z wieloma ilustracjami a także mapami co przy tego typu książkach dla mnie osobiście jest bardzo ważne. Cały świat przedstawiony przez autora jest bardzo rozbudowany, a fabuła opowiadań toczy się zarówno na lądzie jak i morzu. Poznajemy sporo kultur, różnych wierzeń, ras czy magii. Sam Conan jest bohaterem z pozoru wyglądający na bezmózgiego osiłka który jedynie potrafi władać mieczem. Mi zawsze kojarzył się z Herkulesem, który to oprócz siły swoich mięśni, miał też świetną intuicję a także zasady i honor które były dla niego niezwykle ważne. Jego życie to ciąg nieustających bitew, walki z potworami i nieprzeciętnych przygód z których zawsze wychodzi obronną ręką. Howard stworzył unikalny świat, pełen tajemnic, magii, miłości i zemsty z bohaterem, którego dziś można już nazwać mianem kultowego. Wszystkie historie jego przygód opisane w tej książce czyta się z zapartym tchem. Jak przystało na ten rodzaj fantasy, nie brakuje tutaj pełnego worka przygód, niebezpiecznych misji, zdrad i bohaterstwa godnego największych wojowników. Kawał dobrej przygody. “I do not always know how to remember. In certain moments, my life with him feels illusory. A soft sheen falls over our life and it is a delicate thing. Did it happen? Was I a wife? Did he wake up beside me? Did we laugh? I know the answers are yes, but I know this like I know he is dead—which is to say, none of it feels true all the time.” I’ve read a few books following my mom’s death in late 2019 and my god grieving during a pandemic (as did Lin in this memoir and I’m sure others have experienced as well) was not an easy feat. In HERE AFTER by Amy Lin, her husband unexpectedly dies after collapsing mid-marathon and Lin is left to make sense of the quiet moments without him and the big plans they had where he should have been a part of. Lin’s deft writing of grief is what makes this grief memoir different from the many others I’ve read. Grief memoirs, for the most parts, are honest. What I loved about Lin’s memoir was that she was honest about her flaws, her, at times, hard-to-love and egoistic behavior in contrast to Kurtis’ altruistic nature and all-encompassing love for her. The nonlinear timeline and short chapters give us poetic slices-of-life of her relationship with Kurtis through their 20s and early 30s coupled with her experience of grief after his death. I love stories or memoirs told in vignettes. I think it brings us deeper into a story and it perfectly captures the dizzying sudden loss you feel with grief. That blip of a memory we remember of the person we lost. Always so fleeting, but bears so much weight it is soul-crushing. That 0.5 second of a memory that comes to you rendering you to pieces all over again. This didn’t feel like “too much” grief nor was it trying to be too sad or palatable where it tries to paint a picture of grief as a hopeful thing. This is grief unfiltered. Bonus that it is only 272 pages but so raw and powerful. Thank you @thatgoodgoodbook for putting me on this book! “Sometimes, I find him sitting on our bed, admiring his handiwork. Other times, I catch him photographing his left hand, his ring finger encircled by his wedding band, which he never takes off. I love being your husband, he tells me.” Pls 😭

Box littéraire 📚📖📚 J'aime toujours autant la @fairyloot J'ai l'impression de me faire un cadeau d'anniversaire chaque mois avec surprise assurée, et découverte constante 🎁 De mon côté, je préfère garder la surprise jusqu'à réception et ouverture, je ne cherche jamais a connaître le livre a l'avance car j'ai peur de me faire des idées et de ne pas apprécier a cause d'un préjugé, ou de rater quelque chose en choisissant de ne pas recevoir la box du mois 📚 C'est comme ça qu'on a des surprises inattendues, comme avec A Fragile Enchantment que je ne pensais pas apprécier et qui était une lecture plutôt sympathique finalement ✨ Bon, il y a aussi des déceptions, que ce soit dans les goodies (une tasse est encore sur mon Vinted, si jamais ça vous intéresse), ou dans les livres (on se rappelle tous de What the River Knows 😭 Ce mois-ci, j'ai pris un peu peur en voyant les réactions des copines sur discord, elles n'avaient pas l'air ravies des goodies. Book Review • Masters of Death "There is a game that the immortals play." I may be at a loss for words on how to properly describe this book. Masters of Death is a contemporary fantasy. This book is pure chaos but in the best way possible. It is everything and nothing you will expect. I went into this book thinking it would just be a fun silly kind of story about ghosts and vampires, Death and his godson, but I never expected it to end up being my absolute favorite story. I was hooked from the very first line “Hello, Children. It’s time for Death.” Plus knowing it was a story about the godson of death but add in A vampire realtor, stubborn ghost, angel and reaper forbidden relationship, and immortals and demigods, I knew I had to pick it up immediately!! This is like most of Olivie Blake's books a character-driven story. It was purely vibes. The best way to read it is by going in blind, I was expecting something silly and fun but this book had layers. It was fun and deep, sad and heartwarming and the story was beautiful. Honestly, the story was hard to follow at the start. There was so much going on and no explanation to why, you kind of just following the story and hoping someone will explain. This doesn't last long tho, we end up learning about the game and everything going on alongside the grandson of death. You never know what to expect or what could possibly happen next. Olivie's writing always feels so poetic. I never close her books without it having like a hundred different tabs and annotations. I highly recommend this book!💚 "Things are so much sweeter when they have an ending; things are so much more painful when they can be ripped away." . Book Review🎩 "As you can imagine, I had quite a few thoughts to gather. The first and foremost of these being “Why am I a hat?”" If you're looking for your next fantasy book that is guaranteed to leave you laughing, you should check out The Drop of a Hat. The Drop of a Hat by Luke Chmilenko & G.D. Penman is the first book in the Hat Trick Series. I enjoyed this book so much. It was entertaining from start to finish. The perfect words to describe this book are - magic, mischief, and chaos. This story is high fantasy but so silly and funny, I'd say it's also a cozy fantasy. The story is told through the POV of Absalom Scryne, the greatest wizard of his generation, who is now a hat. And honestly, that was just weird enough to be this book so entertaining. It is so well written, and so silly and funny that you'll be obsessed right from the start. It is an easy, fun, and fast-paced read that will leave you laughing out loud. Read if you like: - magic hat - funny creatures - entertaining adventure - quest without the stress - banter/humor - wizard, who's a hat and a morally gray character - low stakes fantasy If you enjoy books like lattes and legends, you should add this to your tbr. Enfin je trouve 🤣📚 seulement cinq ajouts dans la pile a lire, et j'avais apportés certains livres au salon pour des dédicaces ✍️ Ce fut un super moment, comme toujours quand je vais à @quais_polar 💙 Il manque d'ailleurs Il était deux fois de Thilliez sur la photo du butin, mais je l'ai prêté. J'espère qu'il plaira à ce nouveau lecteur 🤞 et il manque aussi ...Et avec votre esprit de Laipsker, que j'étais en train de lire au moment de prendre la photo, et je l'ai oublié 🙈 Cette année, je me suis davantage focalisée sur les dédicaces et donc les rencontres (toujours trop courtes 🥲 mais faut bien que tout le monde puisse passer, et je sais pas vous mais en fait un fois devant les auteurs, je suis incapable d'aligner deux mots 🤣😭). Déjà l'attente passe plus vite, mais en plus les discussions sont géniales, on découvre plein de choses, il y a des lecteurs qui viennent de super loin. Toujours des moments mémorables 💙 Niveau découverte, pas grand chose cette année, on ne va pas se mentir. Autant d'habitude je traîne dans le salon et j'aime bien aller vers les auteurs qui n'ont pas grand monde qui attend une dédicace, mais il y a un monde maintenant 😱 j'ai assez vite abandonnée l'idée et me suis concentrée sur les gros auteurs cette année. J'ai quand même pris Satan dans le désert de Teran, surtout parce que j'ai un gros coup de cœur pour la charte graphique de la ME 💙 je trouve la couverture magnifique et choisir un livre fût difficile. I choć można go czytać bez znajomości pierwszego, to aby mieć pełny obraz sytuacji, zachęcam do sięgnięcia najpierw po debiut Autorki - "Okaleczone". "Jej sprawa" to intrygujący, wymagający skupienia i potrafiący zaskoczyć kryminał, z wątkiem politycznym. Hania po jednej rozmowie z Onucym podejmuje decyzję o powrocie do prokuratury i od razu angażuje się w dużą sprawę dotyczącą śmierci ministra sprawiedliwości. Historia ta mimo, że od pierwszych stron wzbudza ciekawość, to nie wciągnęła mnie w pełni od samego początku. Mniej więcej do połowy, nie miałam problemów, aby odłożyć książkę na bok i zrobić sobie przerwę. Jednak narastające tempo, pojawiające się zwroty akcji sprawiły, że drugą część pochłonęłam jednym tchem. Pamiętam, że w pierwszym tomie zabrakło mi elementu dużego zaskoczenia, tutaj zdecydowanie Autorka zrekompensowała mi tamtą stratę i co nuż wyciągała na światło dzienne kolejne zaskakujące informacje. Tutaj aż do samego końca niczego nie można być pewnym. Co do samego wątku politycznego, to nie należy on do moich ulubionych. Jednak za sprawą lekkiego pióra pani Anny bez większych kłopotów przepłynęłam przez tę książkę i z wielką chęcią poznam więcej historii z panią prokurator w roli głównej.
