✨️ Book Review ✨️ Pond 🥀 by Claire-Louise Bennett Every now and then, I come across a book that I just have no idea how to categorize. Pond is an excellent example of that. I can't lie. This was a definite cover buy - I mean, just look at how gorgeous this book is! The inner contents of this book are very confusing, and I am still struggling to organize my feelings about it. Pond is a fusion between poetry, prose, and stream of consciousness. It focuses on a woman living alone in a somewhat secluded cabin. There were some very beautiful phrases and moments throughout. It is rich with nature descriptions. But, overall, I think this collection was too meandering for my taste. I may not have fallen in love with this book, but I will very happily hold on to it; I will proudly display it in my library and gaze lovingly at its cover. ••☆ Have you ever purchased a book merely based on its cover? ☆•• ☆ ☆ .

April 24 . Are vampires back in style? Did they ever go out of style? I don’t know but I read Silver Under Nightfall a few weeks ago from a library borrowed audiobook and it was super interesting. The narrator was pretty damn good and pulled me right into the story. It was also my first Rin Chupeco book and there is a likelihood I would read more books by this author! . This one has a sequel but I have heard mixed reviews about it. Unsure if I should go ahead and get the audiobook off of libro fm for it or if I should just try it out from the library. Alternatively, is there an audiobook you have listened to that you thoroughly enjoyed, that pulled you right into the setting? Would love a recommendation if you have! #OnThisDay in 1825 R.M. Ballantyne was born at 25 Ann Street in Edinburgh. His father Alexander Ballantyne was brother and junior partner of John and James Ballantyne, Printers and Publishers. Aged sixteen, he signed on for five years with the Hudson’s Bay Co., through which he was able to travel to Canada. He recorded his adventures in a journal, as well as in his correspondence to his family back in Scotland. When he returned to Edinburgh, a friend suggested that he revise his journal and letters for publication, and add his illustrations. The author’s travel experiences often set the backdrop for the boys’ own adventures he went on to write. When in 1857, Ballantyne wrote ‘The Coral Island’, perhaps his most well-known book, a geography-related mistake meant he travelled even more widely to research the backgrounds of his stories. A writer of juvenile fiction, the heroes in his works are models of self-reliance and moral righteousness. Ballantyne was an activist against the slave trade, and slavery in Africa was the setting for several of his works including his 1873 novel ‘Black Ivory’. The story is about two English castaways that find themselves in the middle of a group of detestable slave traders. The book contains a great deal of non-fiction to accompany the fictitious main characters, thus resulting in a highly emotional tale of suffering and horror on a massive scale. However, the novel also contains elements of hope. Written for a young audience, an evangelistic message is present throughout the story, particularly on the need for the Gospel to be introduced in Africa. Ballantyne was a deeply pious man, and his works are dotted with many religious references. Always Mine by Laura Pavlov ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 First things first... this cover is STUNNING! I really enjoyed this first book in the Honey Mountain series! It's a friends to lovers story following Vivi and Niko. They've been best friends forever and seen each other through so many things, from bad relationships to losing a loved one. Niko is a notorious player in their small town, and Vivi is a relationship kind of girl. When Vivi is single for the first time in forever, she decides who better to scratch the itch than her best friend, her best friend who also works for her dad. But things escalate for these two. They admit that it's never been just a fleeting crust for either of them, and it seems everyone, but they could see that. This was such a sweet first book, and I definitely fell in love with Honey Mointain while reading. The only thing I was missing in this book was a little more time before Vivi and Niko got together. It happens pretty quickly in the book, and I would've loved to see more of their friendship before benefits. All Sorts of Lives is a study/biography about Katherine Mansfield that uses 10 of her short stories as a means of accessing the writer’s life. Such an interesting concept. Along side the biography, I’m reading the corresponding short stories that can be found in the collection, Wild Places. I’m not drawn to short stories, generally. Short stories are over so quickly that I struggle to recommit and start another. Reading an entire collection of them usually feels daunting. But I’m reading one story and one chapter a day from the biography and it’s just the right amount. It’s giving me to space to pause and think over what I’ve read. If you’ve never read Katherine Mansfield’s short stories, I highly recommend giving them a try. Her writing was ahead of its time and the mind reels when one considers that someone who died at 34 could leave such a large body of work behind. Have you read any of Katherine Mansfield’s writing? 📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖 Each time Elisa Shua-Dusapin brings out a new book, I rush to the bookshop, eager to lose myself in her dream-like, quiet prose. There is something completely hypnotic about the way she writes, so vivid and immersive that I feel as if I have stepped inside the pages and transported to the other side of the world. Her latest book, Vladivostok Circus, has the same delicateness to it as her previous works. Recent graduate, Nathalie, arrives at the Vladivostok circus tasked with designing the costumes for a trio of artists who are due to perform the most dangerous act of them all: the Russian bar. As the season ends and all the performers go home, only the trio, their manager and Nathalie remain, preparing to perform at the infamous Ulan Ude festival before Christmas. This is very much a “vibes over plot” kind of book, and I have to admit, not my favourite of her three, but I still absolutely adored it. Each character was compelling in their own way, but I couldn’t help but find myself enthralled by Anna, the young woman in the trio of circus performers. The relationship between Natahlie and Anna was intoxicating and beguiling, whilst also a commentary on feminine beauty, belonging and otherness. ✨️Book Review✨️ Young Mungo 🤍 by Douglas Stuart I don't know why I tend to gravitate toward sad books, but they usually end up becoming my favorite reads. And this gem was no exception. This ended up being my favorite read in March, and while I love recommending my favorite books, I always feel guilty recommending sad books. If you are feeling up for an emotional, beautiful story, please give this one a try! This heartbreaking story is about a young teen growing up in Glasgow named Mungo. Although barely 15 years old, Mungo has had a rough life. He is the youngest of 3 siblings who grew up without a father and their alcoholic mother is often not around either; often leaving them home alone for days at a time when she meets a new potential partner. Mungo's older brother, Hamish, is the leader of a gang and is often trying to "make a man" out of Mungo. Because of this, he has been surrounded by violence his entire life. Everything changes when he meets James, and a romance begins to blossom between them. Through James, joy begins to enter Mungo's life for the first time. But their love is not free of obstacles. In a time and place where being gay can cost you your life, they have the additional challenge of being starcrossed lovers: a Protestant and a Catholic. I absolutely adored Mungo's character. He is the sweetest and kindest kid despite everything he has been through. He is timid at times, but he also shows his bravery many times over. Douglas Stuart's writing is remarkably beautiful, and I feel like I really got to know Mungo and connect with his deepest thoughts. This book is beautifully written and the credit for that doesn’t only go to the author, but Mara Faye Lethem is such a talented translator as well! I think these women could write about anything and I would be captivated. I think my potatoes were way too big. More surface area would have helped. I did like the @kindersflavors garlic mayo with the paprika tomato sauce on top!

An Indian Classic you are reading this year? Here’s the exclusive latest premium hardcover edition from Penguin India for Untouchable by Mulk Raj Anand which I am obsessed with! So worth it! I like this book for it made me feel the actual anger of the young main character and the different range of emotions which went high and low as he wanted me to experience while he was going through all the abuse, assualt and insults. This is the story of Bakha, who is an eighteen year old, belonging to a lower caste whose family of sweepers and latrine cleaners. Brought up by his neglectful and violent father alongwith his two other siblings, Bakha works hard from dawn facing all kinds of harrassment and abusive people belonging to other caste. He had to go through hunger, shame and pain most days. What was most striking about the story is the way how rational and realistic the young character is inspite of the events that happened to him and the situation he was in, both outside and inside his home. The story is what you would expect: how the ‘untouchables’ belonging to lower caste suffered and struggled during those days, facing humiliation all their lives for no fault of theirs. However, it is not an easy read for me. The writing is easy to follow but it has layers of emotions and expressions that would be subjected to different kinds of reaction from different readers. The second half became intense as compared to the first half as it turned into political speeches, talks about Gandhi’s thoughts on several issues of inequality and destroying caste. It was eye-opening for me and I enjoyed it. But I wanted a better ending. Worth the read. I would say it would be a bit difficult for beginners otherwise give it a try. Warnings for SA, domestic violence and abuse.

Reseña Book Lovers 📚✨ 4⭐/5⭐ Leí Book Lovers hace un tiempo ya pero no quería dejar pasar la oportunidad de hacer reseña de este libro que tanto amé. Como ya saben, no soy muy del romance, pero la verdad que esta vez debo admitir que la historia me hizo reír, llorar, y pegar gritos de lo lindo que era todo. Esta historia tiene todos los tropes necesarios para atraparme, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, small town, protagonista fuerte. Honestamente lo elegí por el título y entré a ciegas, jamás pensé que me iba a encontrar con una historia tan divertida, atrapante y tierna. El romance es perfecto, súper dulce y me encantó como Nora se resistía a el. Pero lo que más debo destacar fue la relación de las hermanas. Está característica del libro me pareció lo más dulce de todo y hasta me hizo valorar mucho más la relación que tengo con las mías. Es un libro súper atrapante desde el principio y para nada denso. De hecho, si mal no recuerdo, lo leí súper rápido. Creo que es el libro perfecto para los amantes de la lectura y el romance. Ademas que sirve muchísimo para salir de un bloqueo lector. Así que si estás buscando eso, te recomiendo que dejes todo y le des una oportunidad a esta increíble historia. Yo sin dudas voy a seguir leyendo a la autora.
ANTI HERO LOVE Who is your favourite Anti-hero? My favourite anti-heroes are Kaz from Six of Crows and Victor from Vicious 😍 and I am in love with these editions from Vicious and Vengeful ❤️❤️ I am struggling a little with my reading because of work being super stressful at the moment. Do you judge books based on their covers? As much as i want to say, we are readers of course we judge books based on their covers but i don't. Even if a cover is so eye catchy and breath takingly beautiful, if i didn't like the blurb and if I'm not getting on with the writing style in the first few pages of the book, then I won't buy it. So i wanted to know if any readers are there who don't judge a book by its cover because mostly in bookstagram, I see people buy the book because they love the cover. Anyway I'm not against people who judge books by their covers because I get you and how these days authors are curating beautiful covers for their books for the aesthetics and pinterest worthy lives and obviously for people who buy books for their beautiful covers. • . . . . . . . .
