#BookstaReviewWeek Thank you Partner @bibliolifestyle and @harperperennial for the gift of Sisters of Belfast. My G-Grandmother was committed to an institution in the 1940’s. She was not mentally ill, just grieving the death of her young daughter. She lived there for decades in awful conditions. I came across 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 at the library and this led me down a rabbit hole of books on this topic. The Foundling by Ann Leary ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1927, Pennsylvania Mary Engle is hired as a secretary at the “Nettleton State Village for Feebleminded Women of Childbearing Age’”. At first she admires the dedication to the vulnerable women residing there, but soon learns that the asylum is not what it seems. Sad and shocking, with a strong MC who works to right the wrongs being committed. The Girl Behind the Gates by Brenda Davies ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1939/1981, England Nora finds herself pregnant at 17 and is labeled a “moral defective” under England’s Mental Deficiency Act. She is institutionalized and suffers decades of despicable treatment. Psychiatrist Janet works at this institution and discovers Nora who has been living there for 40+ years. She is determined to help Nora rediscover a life stolen from her. A tough read, yet hopeful and redeeming. I was so rooting for her to break free of the cruel bonds of her unfortunate life. Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1985, Ireland As coal merchant Bill Furlong makes his delivery rounds, he discovers all is not as it seems at the orphanage run by the Church. This quiet novella packs a big punch. Relying more on inference and emotion, it is a story about finding the moral fortitude to do the right thing. Sisters of Belfast by Maureen Maure ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Post-WWII, Ireland Sisters Aelish and Isabel, orphaned during the war, are sent to an orphanage run by the Sisters of Bethlehem. As they grow up, the sisters lives take divergent paths. Isabel to a life in Newfoundland and Aelish remains in Ireland and chooses to become a nun. The sisters reunite and try to make sense of their childhood. A strong sister story full of tragedy, love, and forgiveness. #sistersofbelfast #bibliolifestyle #melaniemaure

Every historical fiction I read just opens my mind up to the past. Sisters of Belfast had so much tragedy I cried during parts. The ending for sisters Aelish and Isabel is what I needed. Synopsis: An enthralling and deeply moving story that begins during World War II, about orphaned twin sisters in Ireland whose lives diverge for decades, until fate—and faith—reunite them in the twilight of their lives. Orphaned during the Second World War, Aelish and Isabel McGuire—known as the twins of Belfast—are given over to the austere care of the Sisters of Bethlehem. Though they are each all the other has, the girls are propelled in opposite directions as they grow up. Rebellious Isabel turns her back on the church and Ireland, traveling to Newfoundland where she pursues a perilous yet independent life. Devout Aelish chooses to remain in Northern Ireland and takes the veil, burying painful truths beneath years of silence. For decades the two are separated, each unaware of the other’s life. But after years of isolation Aelish is unexpectedly summoned to Newfoundland, where she and her estranged sister begin to bridge the chasm between them. Reunion brings to light the painful secrets and seismic deceptions that have kept these sisters apart, leaving the McGuire twins to begin reconstructing their understanding about themselves as women and as family–what they know of love, hope, and above all, forgiveness. #sistersofbelfast #harpercollinspublishers @harpercollins #historicalfictionbooks #sisterbooks @mm_maure #ww2fiction

Comparison and competition create chaos. It muddies Clarity! Competition has been a bone in my body. And as I've aged, it has become brittle. Thank sweet jaayzuz for that! Get my latest newsletter and read about a tussle I had with competition and a sweet gal from Texas (unbeknownst to her 😂). Plus... Repost from @tarheelreader • @mm_maure REVIEW: Thank you, @suzyapprovedbooktours, for the gifted book. About the book: “In the spirit of Heather Morris, Kate Quinn, and Pam Jenoff, an enthralling and deeply moving story that begins during World War II, about orphaned twin sisters in Ireland whose lives diverge for decades, until fate—and faith—reunite them in the twilight of their lives. A story of faith—in religion, in the world, and in one another—Sisters of Belfast is a heartbreaking, tragic, and deeply moving novel about survival and the enduring power of sisterhood.” Aelish and Isabel are twins, and as children during World War II, they are orphaned. They are raised by the Sisters of Bethlehem. When they are adults and choosing next paths, Isabel leaves the church and Ireland, entirely, moving to Newfoundland. Aelish takes the veil and remains in Ireland, until she is asked to come to Newfoundland, and the sisters are reunited. Sisters of Belfast is an emotional story of sisterhood and faith, in all its forms, especially faith in others. It pulled on all my heartstrings, and I was invested in the characters. Though it’s rife with tragedy, there is hope and healing, too. I’m excited to have discovered a new hist fic author to love. #bookish #bookstagram #justbooksbookstagram #melaniemaure #harperperennial #sistersofbelfast #bookstagramnc #tarheelreader #tarheelreaderreviews #historicalfiction

Repost from @karens_library • @mm_maure 🤍 BOOK REVIEW / BOOK TOUR 🤍 Sisters of Belfast by Melanie Maure @mm_maure ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 stars Available now! Sisters of Belfast was a very moving novel of twin sisters who were orphaned when they were children during the bombing of Belfast in 1941 WWII. The sisters end up in an orphanage called the Sisters of Bethlehem where the twins, Aelish and Isabel, are raised by the nuns. Once they are older, Aelish stays and becomes a novice nun and Isabel marries and escapes the orphanage by moving to Newfoundland with her husband. This story was very dark and disturbing at times as the secrets of the past are slowly revealed. But the end was very satisfying. I definitely enjoyed this historical fiction which goes back and forth between 1941, 1955, and 1971, and even 2016. Cooking nourishes my soul as much as writing. When I can combine the two, it is a magical alchemy. While in New York on book tour for SISTERS OF BELFAST I ate lunch with my editor at a Wonderland called @eatalynewyorkcity . I found a bag of organic Sicilian bay leaves. I’ve never experienced the scent of true Italian bay leaves. And so today the marinade for chicken Marbella is packed with those aromatic beauties. Stay tuned for the finished product after 24 hours of marination! #eatalynyc #foodlover #foodie #newyorkcity #cookingtime #foodmagic #sistersofbelfast

My heart broke for the sisters more than once learning not only of their past but the events in their present time. This caused it to be a tough read at times, but I loved how the change in timelines was done. The way they were treated while at the orphanage is something no child should have to go through. I still was left feeling hopeful despite much of the novel dealing some deeper topics. The mystery is what kept the second half of the book moving and I was happy to see growth in multiple different characters. 📖Sisters of Belfast📖 By: Melanie Maure When a book is recommended for fans of Kate Quinn, Pam Jenoff and and Heather Morris, I know I MUST read it! The Sisters of Belfast tells the story of twin sisters who are orphaned during the Second World War. What results is a story of two sisters, both drastically different, over the course of decades as they grow apart and find their way back to each other. Told in both Ireland and Newfoundland, I was really excited to read this book. It was a quick read and I really enjoyed it. This book contains really strong and well-developed characters which made me feel connected and invested in the story. A great historical novel, with Canadian ties (for all my Canadian followers!). This book released on February 27, 2024. Melanie Maure is second generation Irish and spends a great deal of time in Ireland, which is an enduring source of inspiration for her work. Sisters of Belfast is her debut novel. Book Tour! 🚨 Thanks @suzyapprovedbooktours and @mm_maure for having me on this tour! 🎁 Sisters of Belfast was published 2/27/24. 💭 If you’re a fan of novels about the aftermath of WWII, Sisters of Belfast is the novel for you. Aelish and Isabel live vastly different lives after they are orphaned during a bombing. Their lives are intertwined again when Aelish visits Isabel in a time of need. I loved how the author went back and forth from the time they were in the orphanage to the present. They both had widely different experiences there and it’s no wonder their personalities were different. Overall this was a well written, emotionally charged story! 🌷 Friday Update 🌷 Thank you to @hijabi_booknook for tagging me to share my life update and current reads. ♥️ Life right now is all books ‘n babies.📚👶🏻 This month I’m trying to let go and just read. I set my sights too high at the start of the year to read “all the books” and complete “all the challenges”. It’s become a drag on my reading enjoyment. I’m learning to let go of expectations (real or imagined) and just let my mood dictate my reading. It’s been such a joy to just fall into a book simply because it catches my fancy. Reading is fun y’all! Tomorrow I am attending an annual all-day Writers’ Conference with my mom and members of her writing group. It’s our third year attending and I’m looking forward to it reigniting my passion for writing.🤞🏼 Last, but not least, I am so in love with and enjoying our two grandbabies. Being a Mimi at age 54 is such a blessing to me. These little girls have my heart and the joy is immeasurable. 🤗🎀 I’m currently reading A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers. It got off to a bit of a rocky start but I’m about one-third into it and really enjoying it. Thank you @mariesembar for adding this to my #12recs12friends this year! ♥️ This Sunday I’ll be starting a buddy read with Marie of Sisters of Belfast by Melanie Maure. It follows two sisters orphaned during WW2 and the vastly different paths their lives take. Looking forward to it!! Have a great weekend friends. I hope you squeeze in lots of reading! 🥰 Tagging some of you to share your life update and current reads. No pressure to post! 😊 #sistersofbelfast #awitchintime #buddyread #currentlyreading #witchyreads #fridayvibes

Repost from @rozierreadsandwine • Book Review SISTERS OF BELFAST By Melanie Maure @mm_maure For @suzyapprovedbooktours Out Now My Take This is one that I ended up using a credit from @librofm and listening to because I was in the car a bunch. The narrator is fabulous!! This is a captivating historical fiction read about twin sisters, Aelish and Isabel, who are orphaned due to their parents being killed during an attack in WWII Belfast. The book is written in two parts, told from multiple points of view, and takes place mainly in 1955. In the first part of the book, Aelish, who is now a nun in Ireland, goes to Newfoundland to visit Isabel who is very ill. They haven’t seen each other in years and this part of the book does go back and give us some backstory of how the sisters got to this point. In the second part of the book, the sisters travel back to Ireland after a tragedy. They realize during this time of wrongs that were committed and learn to rebuild their relationship. This one is written with the backdrop of history, but really deals with the bonds of sisterhood. It is thoughtfully written with many touching characters. ❓Do twins run in your family? I have one set of cousins that are twins - that’s it. #sistersofbelfast #melaniemaure #suzyapprovedbooktours #historicalfiction

I have been in a reading rut, not feeling like I was reading anything I wanted to share with friends. That has ended, thanks to Sisters of Belfast, by Melanie Maure - @mm_maure - which I finished last night. It’s the story of twins, Aelish and Isabel, who are ten, in 1941, when they lose their parents in an air raid in Belfast. They are sent to the order of the Sisters of Bethlehem, where they find kindness, and cruelty. With different forces guiding them, they are split apart in their teens. Aelish chooses to become a nun, and Izzy and her beau Declan emigrate to Newfoundland. Alternating between a present setting from 1955 onward, and their growing up in the convent in the 1940s, the story moves from Belfast, to the small village of Pouch Cove, and back to Belfast. Sisterly bonds are examined, both familial, and those of the nuns. There are a lot of layers to this story, that need to be discovered as it is enjoyed, so I won’t reveal any more plot points. Some of the content is bleak, and important. It is a very well written story, with strong characters, and interesting settings, and I quite enjoyed it. #sistersofbelfast #melaniemaure

Hi!!! I’m here, I’m alive! Wowie Zowie it’s been a wild couple weeks – work got busy, I got sick and then I opened a show this weekend! 😵‍💫 I am so behind on books, but thought I’d pop on here and talk about the one I read while I was down and out and oh my goodness I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It’s a story of twin sister war orphans who grow up in an Irish Catholic orphanage and grow into two very different people. When tragedy strikes again, they reunite after many years and work to heal past wounds, hidden truths, and ultimately test their sisterly bond. Spanning from 1946 to 2014, this story was tragic and sweet and thought-provoking. I absolutely fell in love with each of these characters, the opposite personalities of each sister as well as the supporting characters in their lives. This is a great rec if you are a historical fiction fan, need a break from typical historical fiction/romance books, or just need a deeply satisfying ending. And it’s a perfect Irish read for March! ☘️ 🍃Book summary in comments!
