Exercise Snacks! Have you heard of them? I'm not talking about donuts you eat between sets! Haha! Exercise snacks is a term growing in popularity and a method used by beginners and advanced athletes as well! Most of us are super busy and can't imagine or are literally not able to spend 15 minutes exercising. Sure we might have the time but we're burnt out mentally and physically. Exercise snacks are quick bouts of exercise (under 1 minute) or even 20 seconds! This could be as simple as running up the steps at the office 3x a day. Do this for a week and you can actually start seeing improvements in your cardiovascular health as well as cognitive abilities. You know that brain fog after you've been sitting at the computer for too long?! This 20 second bout of exercise can help alleviate that! You know what the best part is? I’ve recently learned about the potent effect post-exercise deregulation has on the body’s rate of recovery. In short, as soon as possible after a workout take 3-5 minutes to do some intentional breathing with minimal external stimulus. Just had a great chat with @drandygalpin. A brief part of that chat was about how we both dig on breathing mechanics. It brought me back a few years to when I first learned about the power of breathing and the diaphragm and it got me thinking about some of the initial research I read on it (see pics). Tale of two bars _____ _ Here at Advantage Conditioning were big, big fans of the Deadlift! We’re also a big fan of using the Hex Bar and a straight Olympic bar when deadlifting. Most of us know protein is important for muscle building. There is however no maximum amount of protein you can absorb from a meal - just a maximum amount your body will use at any given time to make muscle and other important things in your body. The rest is still absorbed and in our body. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When we eat protein it gets broken down to its “building blocks” called amino acids. Think of protein as bunches of LEGO linked together, when protein (the linked LEGO blocks) are digested they are broken into their individual LEGO pieces. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our bodies have no specific storage of these amino acids (LEGO pieces). So when we consume more than needed to build certain things in our body (namely muscle tissue and neurotransmitters) we have to do something with the spare materials. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We either use the remaining amino acids for energy (it’s a macronutrient so provides energy, if you don’t know what that is head over to my website and look for the blog post on macronutrients or click the link in my bio). If the leftover amino acids/protein is not used for energy because we have ingested more calories than we are burning the remaining protein/amino acids will be stored as fat. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yip over consuming on protein when in a calorie surplus (eating more calories than we are burning) can lead to fat storage. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So two major takeaways from this: 1. If you eat the protein, you absorb the protein. Just not all of it goes towards building muscle. 2. Getting my learning on after my run! I have found that my ability to focus is dramatically increased after exercise (especially after long repetitive motions like running or walking). Couple of points here that stood out to me about athletic performance and usage of high fats vs carbs. Burning carbs is faster and more efficient than through fat, more nutrients in carbs (plants), body may adjust in metabolic states of high fat diets and compromise the effencieny of burning carbs. . #drandygalpin posted a good video explaining exercise selection and the importance of knowing why you are doing particular version of that movement. We are not doing rehab, we have no stability issues so the classic barbell deadlift fits our purposes nicely today.

Pretty cool study I wanted to share.... #Repost @drandygalpin with @get_repost ・・・ Our @cspfullerton recent study comparing the muscle activation in hex and traditional deadlifts. * - One interesting point NOT visible in the study is many of the people chose to stay extremely HORIZONTAL during the hex, even though the hex allows them to be more vertical. In those people, muscle activation was NOT different between the 2 exercises. * Take home point: it's all about execution - NOT exercise selection. * Thank you @dr.eddiejo for making this awesome graphic!! - Although very similar in nature, the Hex Bar and Straight Bar deadlift variations should be considered, not as mutual alternatives, but as separate exercises. Due to altered joint angles from one DL variation to the other, muscle activation patterns are also changed. As in the study presented above, the hex bar DL produced approximately 21% greater quad (vastus lateralis) activation than the straight bar DL however 14% and 21% less hamstring (biceps femoris) and erector spinae activation, respectively. In terms of movement characteristics, subjects generated slightly greater force (+2%) and moderately greater power (+13%) and velocity (+10%) during the hex bar DL. Therefore, the hex bar variation may be of interest to those athletes focussed on training these strength attributes.
