✨️Book Review✨️ Another day, another Bakeshop Mystery series review, this time for Chilled to the Cone. Jules is presented with an expansion opportunity for Torte - a space that will be perfect for selling their concretes and cold drinks during the height of the tourist season in Ashland! But before renovations on the space are even complete, a string of events makes her question what she may have gotten herself into. Can Jules solve the murder of a beloved local homeless man without ending up dead too ? Or will her sleuthing finally catch up to her ? With every new book in this @ellie_alexander Series, I become even more engrossed in the world she created and the characters that live in it. I am invested in their lives just as much as in the mysteries and find so much joy when they are evolving. Which makes it all that more frustrating when a character is acting out of sorts - and in this case, Im talking about our main character. I know that her state of mind was necessary to her personal development , but it was slightly frustrating to read the parts in the story when she was reflecting on her relationship with her estranged husband. Instead of it coming across as uncertainty and a lack of confidence that they would be ok, it felt like she was constantly talking herself out of the relationship and looking for excuses. Which felt a little off brand for her. That being said, the mystery was well written and entertaining to follow. A Bakeshop Mystery #3 gave us a story that was full of winter, history, scrumptious food and quite a locked room mystery. This book takes place at a retreat outside of Ashland. I missed the usual Torte setting and regular cast, but it was fun to sneak away. Especially when a winter storm traps everyone at the lodge making it a locked room mystery. I have to admit that I was stumped trying to solve this case. I didn’t know who to trust or what the reasoning was behind the murder until close to the big reveal. Jules estranged husband, Carlos, suddenly arrived on the scene causing quite a love triangle. I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’m not a fan of either suitor so far. I don’t like how Jules acts differently around Carlos and it’s easy to see why she can’t trust him. I did enjoy learning about their past working on cruise ship and the trouble that lead up to their quick split. I adored Sterling. It was fun seeing him gain him confidence in the kitchen and claim the right to train as a sous chef. The food description were non stop and I enjoyed watching the team prepare each meal, adapt to the altitude changes and pivot when the inclement weather changed their set plans. Favorite quote: “That’s what I love about baking. It’s more than art or science. It’s memory.”
"Meet Your Baker (A Bakeshop Mystery #1)" by Ellie Alexander is a fun cozy mystery read. Follows the usual cozy mystery pattern of 30ish female moves due to a heartbreak then gets involved in a murder mystery. Jules "temporarily" moves home after finding out something upsetting about her older husband. She immediately rents an apartment and gets heavily involved in her parents' bakery. Yeah, doesn't sound so temporary to me. She's in some major denial about what her subconscious already knows. It's your standard cozy murder mystery. Can't go wrong with its set up and investigation. If you're already into cozy mysteries or just testing them out, this is a good one. Good intro book for a cozy mystery series. It'll be interesting to see where it goes from here. Catch Me If You Candy is another mystery back in Ashland. It's the annual Halloween celebration and parade for the town and everyone, and their pets, will be in attendance in their costumes. During the celebrations, Jules finds a person in a dragon costume slumped up against the wall of the bakery. When she goes to check on the person, she finds he is dead. With so many people in town for the parade and everyone in costume, how will the police catch the killer? And days before the parade, Jules found a note tucked into an old mahjong set warning about a dragon. Could that be the missing link to help point her in the right direction? So fun to read all these Bakeshop Mysteries. To get to know characters and how they grow is probably the best part about reading a series. I think my first series to hook me was The Babysitters Club. Goodness! This year is rushing by….vanishing like smoke 💨 (😂 I couldn’t help it) A Smoking Bun is the 18th book in the Bakeshop Mystery series by Ellie Alexander. In this story we have a snowy, New Year’s Eve theme with the mystery taking place primarily at the ski resort, Mount A, in Ashland, Oregon. Jules is hosting Carlos’s family for a highly anticipated visit from Spain and she has planned a variety of winter activities to welcome them to their corner of the world. On a midnight show shoe trail adventure, they are confronted by an obnoxious guide leading two women off the trails. Soon an emergency rescue becomes necessary and the next day, the odious and irresponsible guide is killed in a questionable accident. There are many layers to this mystery and several suspects. With the lodge having financial issues, some of the employees having obvious conflicts with the victim, and a few suspicious outsiders with enigmatic motives for being in town this mystery has twists and turns until the final pages. I enjoyed seeing Jules’ interactions with Ramiro’s family, her reflections on this new stage of life, the Torte couples burgeoning romantic relationships and the culinary flavors and recipes of the season. A Smoking Bun is a fun and entertaining addition and with the ongoing, developing content it keeps the series fresh. I always enjoy my time in this small hamlet of Oregon with the Torte family and Ashland community. Any cozy mystery series you particularly love? I always enjoy doing a LAST, NOW, NEXT post, so here’s my latest. 😊 LAST: One of the last books I’ve read is The Whole Truth by Cara Hunter, part of the D.I. Adam Fawley series. There’s a character guide at the beginning if you’re new to the series. Adam and his team are called in on an unusual harassment case at Oxford which has several twists and turns.Then another case comes up that hits closer to home for Adam. This tense, suspenseful book is made more interesting by the inclusion of multimedia items such as police reports, newspaper articles, and online message boards. 😀 NOW: April Curses & May Hearses by Trixie Silvertale - I was fortunate to receive an advance copy from @trixiesilvertale of the lastest Harper and Moon Investigations mystery coming out April 30. This fun paranormal cozy mystery series is about a psychic PI. In this book, Mitzy is looking forward to her and Erick’s first wedding anniversary, but puts her own plans on hold to look into an attack on a local new-age shop owner and a mysterious item that may have been stolen. I’m enjoying the book and am eager to find out what happens next. 😁 NEXT: Mocha, She Wrote by Ellie Alexander - This is book 13 in the Bakeshop Mystery Series. I’ve skipped around a lot in this series and am caught up on the most recent books, but haven’t yet read this one about a barista competition. A Smoking Bun: A Bakeshop Mystery by Ellie Alexander Book 39/100 for 2024 I like this series, really I do. I credit it with getting me back into reading in 2020. But the whole “oh, I just don’t know what to choose” thing is so overdone here. Jules doesn’t know if she can forgive Carlos. Doesn’t know if she wants to stay at Torte. Doesn’t know if she wants Carlos to stay. Doesn’t know if she’s ready to grow their family. I like that there is more to each book than just the mystery, but uuuggggghhhhhh. Anyway, this was a fun installment, definitely kept me guessing, and I’m always grateful when I know a favorite series is continuing. In Nothing Bunt Trouble, we follow Jules as she stumbles across one of her dads old journals only to find out he had once been involved in trying to solve a murder along with her now stepfather, The Professor. Upon realizing that the case they were working on all those years ago had never been solved, Jules takes it upon herself to figure out who the murderer was in hopes that she can finish what her dad started, and help the father figure in her life find the peace he deserves. Can she solve the case, or will the murderer find her first ? It was nice to see another way Ellie Alexander is able to infuse freshness into this series. It is no small feat when it comes to collections that contain a lot of books, all revolving around a common subject. I enjoyed this one, as I always do. MINI BOOK REVIEW: Meet Your Baker by Ellie Alexander was a cozy, quick read that launched me into modern cozy mysteries. It is the first book in the Bakeshop Mystery series. Juliet Capshaw returns to her hometown in Oregon after suffering heartbreak while working as a chef on a cruise ship. Hoping for a break from all the stress, she begins working with her mom at the family bakery. Her hopes for a peaceful settling in are dashed when she discovers a body on the kitchen floor one morning. This book had me hooked on the characters fairly quickly. There is a close relationship between Juliet and her mom and there are plenty of quirky and sweet characters to grow attached to. Even though I am not a baker myself, I liked how baking was seemlessly woven not the story. I won’t lie – I did skip over some of the more detailed descriptions of the baking process and how it made her feel because it isn’t really my thing, but for those who absolutely love baking I know those descriptions will be something they will love to read. Alexander does an amazing job of bringing her characters to life – whether it is in how she describes them or their mannerisms or in how she creates dialogue between them. This is a book I would recommend to anyone who loves super, super cozy baking mysteries. Have you read this one? 💬What would you get at the bakeshop to treat yourself? Happy Friday! I’m going back to jury duty for another day and crossing my fingers I don’t get picked because I truthfully don’t think I get enough sleep to be a good juror...So I’m chugging my coffee quickly and posting and running. Series: Bakeshop Mystery # 18 Format: 🎧 Verdict: This series still hits! This series continues to retain it’s coziness even after 18 installments! It has quickly become my cozy happy place and the characters feel like family at this point. Spending time with Ramiro’s family was like getting a hug from new friends that feel like family. I loved being on Mount A and the ski lodge as a perfect winter location (even though it was deadly) and the descriptions had me craving a ski trip follow by warm treats. I guessed the murderer (yay me) and loved how Jules and Lance snooped around and put things together. Another smashing success. Note: I really enjoyed this audiobook narrator!
Snooping is an art, much like baking. I haven’t read all the Bakeshop nysteries get, I’ve just been skipping around as I like. And A Smoking Bun is the Bakeshop Mysteries at its finest. Cozy with good characters and an enthralling plot. Firstly I loved this book because it has so much Lance, in vintage 80s ski gear à la House of Gucci. Also the action gets going pretty quickly, which is always important for this ADHD reader. and I’m obsessed with the Dummy Downhill Run, and I genuinely enjoyed meeting Ramiro’s family. Lance stole every scene, as per usual, and his and Juliet’s investigation was top notch, no silly pushback of “oh it’s not our business” this time. And thankfully the suspects this time were all definitely suspicious, a few cozy mysteries I’ve read have suspects that the motive boils down to “they didn’t like the victim, and they’re a rude person”. Which is not at all interesting for a mystery. Thankfully, that is not the case here, and the mystery kept me guessing and had twists I never expected! 🫖Instead of a cup of hot cocoa, I’m pairing this book with a cup of Florence tea from Harney&Sons @harneytea 🫖It’s a chocolate hazelnut flavored black tea, perfect with a splash of milk and a little sugar. While I do think it was interesting to revisit that book as an adult, it was not important enough (to me) to slog through it. Last night I started Death on Tap by Ellie Alexander & it is so cute! If you live in my corner of the country you have likely visited Leavenworth - a quaint Bavarian town right on the other side of the mountains and that's where this book series is based! Her boyfriend Carlos' family is in town from Spain to visit after Christmas. Jules has taken vacation time to enjoy every minute of their visit. First on the agenda is a Stargazing midnight snowshoe trip. It is cut short by someone needing rescue by the Ski patrol. Fitz is causing mayhem on the mountain by not following the rules. Not staying on paths and this time stranding skiers. Next is the dummy race. When someone is hit by the Ski patrols dummy it's not an accident. Shaun of the ski patrol is a suspect. Jules decides to find out what happened and who the real killer is. I enjoyed this book. The writing always hooks me even though I've only read a handful of this series. I really need to start at the beginning and read them all. I do love the characters. It would be nice to know who is who and their backstories. I enjoyed following the clues with Jules. I had no idea whodunnit. This book made me really hungry while reading it. 😋 I can't wait to see what happens next for Jules. 📖Book Review📖 A Smoking Bun By: Ellie Alexander ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a really good cozy mystery! Great if you are wanting a good mystery, but want something lighter to read than a thriller. It is also especially good to read during winter months with all the descriptions of winter throughout it. Really enjoyed the small town setting. The characters were very likable and fun. The plot was solid with a good mystery to solve. It is a culinary mystery, so be prepared for descriptions of lots of food that will leave you hungry and wishing you had that food nearby! This is part of the Bakeshop Mystery series, but can definitely be read as a stand-alone like I did! I have heard that it is nice reading in order as you get to see the characters develop and grow, but you definitely don’t have to, but I am interested now in going back and reading the series from the beginning. I read Muffin But the Truth. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 5/5 pepperonis. @paws.and.read introduced me to this cute little cozy mystery series this winter, all set in a bakery and the surrounding town in Oregon. While I was visiting my parents last month my mom and I found two of books in the series at the bookstore, so we decided to buddy read them. The book has recipes in the back, and when my mom said she was planning to make the blueberry muffins, I was like "haha take a picture for my Instagram" thinking she'd be like "lol" but she got REALLY into it!!!! Thanks mom!! Jules Capshaw and her bakery team have been hired to cater a weekend trip for the executive team at a tech company, and when one of them is found dead in the river the first morning, Jules has to work quickly to figure out who did it and prevent another tragedy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🟦 A Smoking Bun by Ellie Alexander is a fun visit to Ashland and all our friends at Torte. It is winter, right after Christmas and Jules’ gang is gearing up for the downhill dummy while Jules herself is gearing up for a visit from Ramiro’s mother, her husband, and his half sister. It is an odd situation but since their friendship had been developing on the internet, Jules felt good about it. She had promised herself that she would take more time for Carlos and her family and this was just the beginning. The downhill dummy was the second of the outdoor events she had planned for them. It was exactly what it sounded liked: a dummy built on skis to race down a slope. The winner was the dummy that held up the best, and her staff promised that Torte’s could be spectacular. Meanwhile, odd things were going on up on the mountain, including a man named Alex, who appeared to be both obnoxious and willing to break all the rules of the mountain putting the lives of skiers and snowboarders at risk, not to mention tour groups. This series is the epitome of cozy mystery wherein it is all centered around family, both by blood and by choice. The staff at Torte is just as much family to Jules as are her mother and the Professor. And then of course, there is Lance, the artistic director of the Shakespeare festival and her good friend. Excellent and developing characters. They were all on the mountain when one of the dummies broke loose and ran over someone. Shocked to find out who the victim was, Jules was certain it was no accident and was worried for her friends on the mountain. I turned out to be an interesting crime with a variety of people as suspects, although the culprit eventually rose to the top and a crime rooted in history was revealed. It’s a good book, although not the best of the series as Jules and her friends come together to root out the evil doer. Kudos for keeping this wonderful series alive, Ellie Alexander! By the end of the book, we see Jules ready for the next chapter and I suspect we will see what that is in book 19! The mystery is balanced with Jules’ life, and that balance works in this book. This is a character-driven novel as far as cozy mysteries go, though there are still plenty of twists and heart-pounding scenes in the mystery to deliver for the plot fans out there. Chow is the first book in the new Magical Fortune Cookie series. Felicity Jin helps her mom run a bakery. Felicity’s mom has the gift of transferring the joy into her baked goods, and Felicity has a newly found ability to make custom-written fortunes that come true for the customers. When one of Felicity’s fortunes seems to predict the suspicious death of the recipient, she is accused of killing him! I enjoyed seeing Felicity and her best friend Kelvin investigate the death to find the real killer and the ending of the book is touching. A Smoking Bun is the 18th book in the Bakeshop Mystery series by Ellie Alexander. This series is a comfort read for me. I know before I read it that I am going to experience all the wonderful things that I love about this series. The Torte family makes the books special. Everyone is unique and they all bring something different to the table. We cannot forget about Lance. He always puts a smile on my face. I can also count on Richard Lord to make an appearance and add a little chaos to Jules and her day. The Downhill Dummy competition is something I have never heard of before. I wonder if it is an actual thing. I was able to picture all the “dummies” flying down the hill on skis. I am happy we got to spend time with Ramiro and his family visiting from Spain. I am ready to see what is up next for Jules and Torte! Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy in exchange for my review. My Cozy Mystery group voted to do a group read of A Bakeshop Mystery by Ellie Alexander this year. Every month we will read, review and discuss one book so by the end of the year we will have read the first 12 books together. This is my review from 2020. The Oregon bakeshop setting is perfect. I love that Jules is a very talented chef and actually works really hard in her family owned business. I enjoy watching her develop new concepts or recipes even if the descriptions leave me craving tasty treats. I would visit Torte in a heartbeat and probably go broke ordering Andy’s coffee creations. I’m a sucker for cool foam art. With the addition of a culinary reality show taking place, it was the perfect way to add in some unknown characters and keep me on my toes trying to solve the murder. I enjoyed the differences between each contestant - I might have been a tad partial to the vegan chef. Talk about a guilty lot of suspects. I was stumped for quite some time until one scene switched up my entire theory. The story included quite a bit of humor and sarcasm, which I adore, but it also seemed very realistic. In many new series, if the MC is getting over some sort of relationship, they always seem to just jollily move on. I appreciate that Jules misses certain things about Carlos and talks about him several times throughout the story. That’s what happens in real separations. I just know he’s going to show back up and mess up her sweet reunion with Thomas though. Cozy character development at it’s finest. The book ends with several recipes.

🍺 It’s Day 5 and the final day of #bookstareviewweek with @jm_bibliolater @mommaleighellensbooknook and @bookstareviewweek! In The Cure for What Ales You by Ellie Alexander, the 5th book in the Sloan Krause mystery series, we finally learn more about Sloan’s past and about her mother. I confess it’s a bit convoluted and repetitive at times but I’m really enjoying this cozy series. There are two mysteries in this book. First is the murder of a housekeeper at the local hotel during the height of Leavenworth’s Maifest celebration. Second is the appearance, or reappearance, of the mysterious Marianne, who left young Sloan with the Krause family 40 years ago. This storyline helps Sloan discover some of the answers, albeit a bit unsatisfying, about her birth parents and her past. As a craft beer snob, I love the beer and the brewing discussions between Sloan and Garrett and enjoy their small-town Pacific Northwest setting. The beer and the characters are really the heart of this series and I’m hoping it gets back on track with the next installment of this series, especially since Sloan & Garrett seem to be giving in to their mutual attraction. ❤️ ❓ Are you caught up on reviews now or do you still have a long way to go? A Smoking Bun is the 18th 😱 installment in @ellie_alexander ‘s A Bakeshop Mystery series. This book takes place during the time between Christmas and New Year’s on Mount A the area’s local ski lodge. With Ramiro’s mom, stepfather and half sister visiting they take in all the local sights and events at the lodge only to have a tragic accident occur. Jules finally gets to meet the rest of Ramiro’s Spanish family and Jules and Sophia (Ramiro’s mom) have a meaningful conversation and a genuine friendship develops which leads to Jules seriously thinking about her and Carlos’s future. I was really really hoping for a certain set of news especially with the title of this book but I guess we will just have to keep waiting. I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of happy news in the upcoming books from everyone in the Torte crew and I can’t wait. This is one of the things I love about a cozy mystery series is how invested you become in the characters lives. “Caught Bread Handed” is the 4th installment in the Bakeshop Mystery series by @ellie_alexander. If you don’t know, I prefer to read cozy mysteries during the season/weather that matches the setting. I already started this series so thought I’d go ahead and share my review from 2016. Juliet ‘Jules’ Capshaw has returned home to Ashland, Oregon. She has spent the past few years traveling the world on a cruise ship. There she was a superb chef. After enduring a sudden betrayal from her husband Carlos, she returns to help her mom run the family owned bakery, Torte. She hoping it will be the perfect place to gather her thoughts and decide what to do about her estranged relationship. That quickly becomes the least of her worries when she discovers a dead body in the bakeshop, uncovers a few mysteries and even reconnects with a former high school sweetheart. Now I understand why so many cozy readers have recommended this book/series. I really enjoyed it right from the very start. The setting is perfect. Torte sounds like a wonderful place to visit. The food descriptions sounded amazing and I’d love to try Andy’s special coffees. I liked all of the Shakespeare quotes or references that were woven throughout the story too. Jules is a great protagonist. She definitely proves that she is a very talented chef and baker. I appreciate how the author gave us peeks into her past and slowly explained why she is separated from Carlos. Many cozies start out with the main character being divorced, widowed, dumped, etc. The difference with Jules is you actually believe and feel all of her emotions, confusion and disappointment. I definitely look forward to watching her character grow as the series continues. The supporting cast was great as well. Easy to include some eclectic characters when you live in a theater town. The mystery had me intrigued right from the moment it was introduced. All in all this was a well paced, engaging story and a wonderful new series debut. I’m anxious to read the next book, Batter Off Dead.
