Good morning, book lovers! Murder Road by Simone St James is an adult mystery/horror thriller with St. James’ usual paranormal twist about a newlywed couple that is headed to their honeymoon location when they take a wrong turn and come across a young woman on the side of the road that has been stabbed. They rush her to a local hospital but end up as the main subjects in a string of unexplained murders on the same road and must solve the mystery themselves. This one gave me Sun-Down Motel vibes, which was great because Sun-Down was my first and still favorite of St. James’ novels. Murder Road has a similar murder mystery turned paranormal thriller plot but didn’t blow me away quite like Sun-Down did. Hello again, readers! It’s a dark and chilly morning (a bit odd after a week of summer temps) and I’m ‘stuck’ inside for now so I’ll use this time to share another of my recent reads. The Retreat by Sarah Pearse is the second book in the Detective Elin Warner trilogy, all of which are contemporary mystery thrillers for adults. The first book is The Sanatorium, and is set in the Swiss Alps but in ‘The Retreat’, Detective Warner is on an eco-wellness retreat on an island with a dark past that the locals call ‘Reaper Rock’. I don’t have much to say about this series so far. They’re thrilling enough to keep me listening but not enough to hype it up… One thing to note with this series so far is that the detective is always off duty / on vacation somewhere when something bad happens and she is pulled into the mystery that needs solved, which is a bit more interesting for me than some other detective fiction I’ve read recently. 5🌟 The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett . First 5 star this year! This was sooo much fun and super eerie! The worldbuilding that was strange, bleak and tense combined with the murder mystery kept me constantly wanting to go back. I was hooked to find out how the organic houses work, how humans get magically altered thus gaining certain traits, the political layers and how the society functions...regions being seperated by walls....and the terrifying front lines near the water where the wet season brings terrors with it. Constant stream of surroundings, worldbuilding and plot that felt otherwordly and cool. While it is a standalone story with a satisfying ending...for now...there was a certain bit that made me want to have answersssss! So gimme that second book! I also loved the body horror and how graphic it was. It all combined felt like a Hell's Paradise and AoT swirl. I am so curious for more! Ana and Dinios are a fantastic duo to follow. Ana's enthousiastic and quirkiness along wih Dinios his serious rookie tone was entertaining. 4🌟 The Slain Divine by David Dalglish. . I overal enjoyed this series! The writing is engaging, wicked set of characters. It did take me a long time to bond with the characters. Not cause they are not interesting. But I think cause it switches a lot between them. And there is constant movement in the plot and action. The fight scenes are exceptional. Loved them. They are cinematic and brutal! The mix of Gods and how humans got godly powers was such a cool part of the series especially the god whisperer. I think folks who looove action in their stories would love this series. It has a quick pace. And the story slowly builds to more complicated challenging end fights. And meanwhile the characters are also growing and getting stronger. It felt like DBZ in that sense XD. I personally had trouble picking the book up again but when I did it instantly engaged. And sometimes I got a bit lost in all the action. Not being aware what their goal was cause its constantly goes from conflict to conflict. It got a bit muddy for me because of that. When it comes to fave pov I found Cyrus his arc my favourite. His growth happens gradually and believable. The sisters Mari and Stasia were both so badass. 4.5🌟The Greenhollow novella duology by Emily Tesh is so charming! It felt like a dark fairytale, centered around nature. The supernatural elements and eerie atmospheric setting made me curious and wanted me to quest further into this world. I enjoyed following Tobias and Henry. Tobias the quiet introverted practical man and Henry the extroverted always curious and whimsical fellow. I started Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. Took me....forever 🫣. I am 100 pages in and adoring it. I've read her Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy years ago and loved it. I thought I'd pick up the duology the minute it came out but nope 👀. I am also still reading Slain Divine. Yes I am still liking it but have trouble picking it up again😬. Probably cause I am reading it physically and the lettering is so tinyyyyy. It costs me too much energy atm so I always pick it up when I am able to fully focus. . 4🌟 A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T Kingfisher. . I was looking for a light read, bit of a palate cleanser in the middle of an intense series. It truly delivered. It felt like a MG read to me, it had a certain whimsy and a bit of comic relieve during dire moments combined with that we followed young kids that managed grand things. And although it read light it wasn't a cozy read in itself. It had its moments but most of the time it was quite dark! Our MC Mona is a wizard with specialty in influencing dough. She works in a bakery. A quiet, relaxing and routined life. Until one morning she finds a dead body in the bakery. Things get out of control for Mona when there appears to be an assassin killing wizards in town. Luckily she isn't alone her friend Spindle and a Gingerbread Man cookie hide away and try to figure out what is going on. And it won't be easy! I personally loved the imagination and challenges throughout. ❤️🔥Lore Olympus Volume 5 by Rachel Smythe❤️🔥 I read 6 graphic novels in February, the last of which was the latest in the Lore Olympus series. This webtoon turned graphic novel is a modern, slightly spicy retelling of Hades & Persephone’s love story and is an incredibly slow burn series. In this fifth volume, Persephone has her first few days of working for Hades, alongside Minthe, who was dating Hades before Persephone came into the picture. Lots of drama and tension but that’s about it so far. 💜The Color Purple by Alice Walker💜 Good morning, readers! I posted my thoughts on this yesterday, for the end of Black History Month, but instagram did a thing and disappeared it, which I guess isn’t any worse than the halfway-uploaded limbo it used to do all the time. 😕 Anywho, this was a reread for me, mostly because there is a newer adaptation of it out now but also because I started reading Alice Walker’s poetry collections in February. I saw the 1985 film adaptation of this book as a child and it had a profound impact on me in ways I don’t time to explain at the moment but Celie is one of my lifelong favorite characters. I love that she found her voice, strength, and a place to belong in the end. I honestly get more and more out this book each time I read it. 4 🌟The Sapphire Altar by David Dalglish. . So the story stays consistent, lots of action and cool scenes. Focussed on the rebellion against the invaders. I really enjoy all the characters but at the same time I wish there was more depth to them. Still it all works great, I can imagine people not having this experience that I am having with the story. Its not like I am not invested! The storytelling easily pulls you in and you go with the flow and its all very vivid and tense. I didnt like Keles her pov much this time, she seemed very undecided and out of character to me anyway. Eshiel is a nice addition. And more depth from Arn's pov was interesting and created more depth to the character. I feel like the finale will be a fight between Gods kind of a thing. 📚Two For Tuesday📚 My most recent read (Bunny) + my current read (Rouge) - both by Mona Awad Bunny is an adult contemporary horror novel about a young woman named Samantha Mackey that attends an MFA program at a New England university where she must survive as the outsider in what seems to be a super tight-knit clique of girls that call themselves the Bunnies. When the Bunnies invite Samantha to join their private party one day, she attends as a joke but finds herself caught up in their whirlwind ‘friendship’ that ends up wayyyy out of hand. Bunny gave me all the Heathers & Mean Girls vibes plus a bit dark academia (college setting) that reminded me of Catherine House by Elizabeth Thomas but with way more twisted horror moments! I’m not far into Rouge but so far it seems to be a dark fairytale-like horror story of a young woman who loses her mother unexpectedly and subsequently becomes obsessed with youth and beauty. ‘Mirror mirror, on the wall’ vibes. 4.5🌟 The Dragons of Deepwood Fen by Bradley Beaulieu. . I waited too long with this reviewww and my terrible memory! I just wanna say I adored the adventure element and constant interaction with dragons. Love that they are a big part of the story. It took me a long time to feel invested with the characters. It needs a moment of your time. I loved the many pov's and enjoyed following everyone. And the tension kept growing while we joined the dragon riders in the midst of action🤩. The whole political/ religion theme was reallly good and mysterious with magical elements. Especially the magic connected to the dragons! I just dont remember the fine details to explain it 🤣. . But the company is hiding something, and the new owners will kill anyone who finds out. The Trench by Steve Alten was a fun, shocking journey back into the Mariana Trench. The downside is that Steve Alten relied heavily on badly written female characters, two forgettable villains, all wrapped up in a fascinating journey into the deep abyss. This series has been a blast to read on the beach. Good morning, book lovers! I’m just going to pretend it’s still Tuesday so I can get these two posted. 😆 I started Fable by Adrienne Young on Sunday (such a beautiful day here) and flew through it. I also finished up the sequel, Namesake, last night! Fable is the first in this Young Adult fantasy series starring a pirate captain’s abandoned daughter, Fable, who has been surviving on her own by dredging (diving for gems) until it is clear that she must leave the island she was left on to go find her father herself. She is quickly swept up in the dangers of the trade and caught in the entangling net of life on the seas. This series is full of adventure, danger, deceit, a bit of Magic, and more. There’s a slow-burn subtle romance that is realized more in Namesake but is still only a small side-plot in the overall story. I loved the characters, the setting, the pacing, and the high stakes in both books. There’s a prequel and a couple of novellas in this series as well so I might continue them soon! 4🌟 The Bladed Faith by David Dalglish. . Dalglish is so gooood at building worlds with actionpacked scenes! I also enjoyed the story started slow with a training, taking its time before expanding. The only thing that somehow lacks for my personal experience is more character depth. Which doesn't mean I don't like the characters. I think they are all great, their character roles r defined and their dialogues make sense and are in character. But I need more? And I am already noticing it being easier in book two. To connect more emotionally. The plot is built around revolution, fighting back, plotting and that creates a lot of tense scenes. And just wicked moments. Below a scene I enjoyed. There were way more but it is a small example. I love how Dalglish does great fight scene and does NOT shy away from gruesome details. I apreciate that a lottt. This world has a lot of Gods, they can live endless but can also be killed. And then there is this big empire with the God Incarnate, preaching there should be only one god and destroying lands. Taking over, one country at a time. Slaughtering and forcing people into their believe. They use paragons to subdue, magical enhanced almost godly humans. Ofc I love there is magic, it is linked to gods and faith. Our heroes in the story are rebels and inspire people to fight back. Will the people of Thanet hold their ground and push back? . 'A woman next to him shouted something frightened and mindless as she chopped at him with her sword. He ended that cry with a spin. His sword cut across her face, meant to open up her throat but instead slicing off her jaw. Hello readers!! We’re already a week into February and I’m behind on sharing my reads & reviews but time flies when you’re procrastinating, am I right? Here is my first read of the month, Paladin’s Grace, the first in the Saint of Steel series by T Kingfisher, author of Nettle & Bone and Thornhedge! This is an adult fantasy series that is giving me serious Legends & Lattes/Bookshops & Bonedust cozy vibes with a sweet, slow burn romance at its core. Stephen the Paladin’s god has died and left him and his brothers feared for their berserker ways and forced to join the Rats to continue their knightly services. He is out patrolling a poorer section of town that is infamous for a serial killer when he runs into a woman that seems to be fleeing for her life. Unable to get the other out of their minds, they attempt to reconnect, but with a killer on the loose and some political intrigue to boot, they must fight to make that happen.
