Self perception vs others perception is an interesting thing. When I look at this photo all I saw was my hair was a mess, I looked tired and pale (lighting didn’t help) and I thought how awful I looked in the hospital gown (only an MRI, nothing too serious). Yet when I sent it to my God Mother when she was asking how I was getting along, she said I looked beautiful…that my skin looked lovely and clear and how well I was doing with my weight loss. It made me realise that I really do think awful and toxic things about myself. So I’m giving something new a go…I’m going to speak to myself in a more positive way, channel her and ask what she would say to me. Well I’m going to try to anyway! When I learned that Just Like a Mother was a thriller with Jewish rep, I jumped at the chance to read it. Sarah is faced with a lot of hard decisions after her beloved husband Adam passes away. Left to her own devices and with little support, she moves in with her mother-in-law, whom until Adam’s shiva she thought was dead. When Sarah and her daughter move into the new house, Sarah realizes something is wrong. This book would make a great movie! @minahardywritesbooks really knows how to build tension and write a suspenseful thriller. This is a short read with short chapters - you’re sure to fly through it. Lots of questions about MMR vaccines in the wake of this preventable measles resurgence 😭😭😭 MMR vaccine is highly effective but some people can’t get it (immunocompromised) or don’t have a great long term response (like me!) so we rely on herd immunity. I’m very frustrated not to have this for the community and it’s very personal for me too. I’m one of the very few people who doesn’t make lasting immunity to measles, something I know from testing as a healthcare worker and in pregnancy. My 3 month old can’t get hers yet and it’s back to work during a measles outbreak so my doctor and I made the choice to get another MMR. It’s my sixth (!!) lifetime MMR and I have zero safety concerns. I’m doing it less for me at this point and primarily for my daughter (my older one has had a 2 dose series and is protected). Even if I don’t make lasting immunity I should have protection from infection and severe disease temporarily. My breastmilk will have a type of antibody called IgA that will line my daughter’s respiratory tract and help keep her safe. You never need to justify your desire to protect your kids. There isn’t need to panic about the measles outbreaks and most people will remain protected. Even if preventable disease infuriatingly affects you, you will do your best and keep your kids healthy with modern medical care. That doesn’t mean that you’re overreacting when you are angry (like I am!) that for profit antivaccine propagandists have created a public health problem that hurts children. Happy Uplift Mothers Monday! Today, we are uplifting our moms who've had c-sections, or formally, cesarean sections! April is Cesarean Awareness Month, and we are here to highlight the importance of them! Whether pre-scheduled or an emergency, c-sections are a very important way that babies are born. There is a stigma surrounding this subject. While yes, there are unnecessary c-sections that can be performed, those are not the majority of why they are done. There is also a stigma against mothers who had c-sections saying that they "are not real moms." Not only is that untrue, hurtful, and invalidating, but it's just plain cruel to say. C-sections can come with trauma from emergency situations where the risk of one's life is on the line. C-section moms are TOUGH. In a c-section, there are 7 layers of tissue that are cut through. It is far from "the easy way out." It is a major surgery that takes an extensive recovery time. So not only are these moms recovering from surgery, but they are also postpartum JUST like those with vaginal deliveries. This means their hormones are dropping very quickly like those with vaginal deliveries. They also have a new baby to care for and nurture, and oftentimes, they have other children to care for as well. So, the added layer of surgical recovery puts more pressure on these new moms. What a week! It's been a while since I've stumbled through a week like I did this week! This week left me feeling absolutely depleted. It's also the last weekend of March already! I feel like I have whiplash from how quickly this year is going. Let your April be transformative and bring your May "flowers." Put whatever energy you have to grow in whatever area of life you wish to bloom. For me, I'll be focusing on my strength and health as it will be my 3rd month of postpartum. What a time to exist in this universe. How weird to hold my laughing, healthy, fed baby to my chest and pretend to eat his neck while my tax dollars are funding a government that is intentionally starving and bombing another mother’s children to death. And the planet is on fire. And we have medical advancements but we won’t make them accessible to the people who need them. Candice was a horrible person and I knew she would be from the start. This is a clever story filled with so many secrets. I really commend the author, she really created and interesting story, it’s very creative and not something that I would have ever thought of. Holidays are getting more and more expensive. Is it because of price increases? Probably. However, a lot of pressure comes from social media and trends. The other day, I was reading comments on a post about Easter baskets. People were discussing how there are parents filling kiddie pools up with presents and Easter goods. I was a bit taken aback by this. While it is a fun idea, it is also giving into this overconsumption problem we have during each holiday. Every holiday seems to be more expensive every year. It's like people are in constant competition for who can make the most aesthetic gift. Not only does this lead to buying things that are just thrown to the side a few days later, but it leads to bigger expectations. With these bigger expectations comes more pressure on moms. It is another thing to stress about with an already busy life. Remember how fun holidays could be when we were children? I can imagine many of us don't remember any over-the-top baskets for Easter. A simple basket and an egg hunt did the trick. Let's take the pressure out of feeling obligated to out-do each holiday! This one is for fans of Delicate Condition and Black Sheep. Plus, I’m loving the Jewish rep in this creepy thriller. 📱 Kindle - I’m currently reading NEXT OF KIN by @authorhannahby and it’s great! I loved Out on a Limb (it was one of my top books of 2023) so I’m super happy that this one is also hitting home for me. 🎧 audio - I’m listening to A FATE INKED IN BLOOD by @danielleljensen (thank you @prhaudio for my gifted copy) at the moment and loving it!!!! This book is fantastic, and I’m really enjoying the audio. The narrator is great - she has a fantastic audio, and I gotta say, I love knowing how everything is actually supposed to be pronounced. The twist lurking in every chapter was fan-freakin- tastic. This thriller had some religion entwined into the story. But I'd classify it as a domestic thriller. As you all know I EAT THOSE UP! I can say with 100% certainty that no mom has their life perfectly in order...and that's OKAY! You really don't need to have it ALL figured out RIGHT NOW. Think about it. If you knew everything you're supposed to know about being a mom, you'd still have no guarantee of feeling like you're doing a good job. Children grow and change so quickly that it's impossible to ever know everything there is to raise them. Plus, you have to factor in how each child is vastly different from one another. All you need to focus on is how to make it through today. What chores or errands do you need to do today? What extracurricular is happening today? Sure, there will be times when you need to think ahead, but if you're living in a constant state of pressure, let this be your sign to slow down. We were never meant to take on so much by ourselves. Let's redefine household and family devision of responsibilities.
