“It’s a strange feeling, realizing that other people you don’t know have their own full lives that don’t touch yours.” - Mackenzi Lee, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue Snippet of my review: Henry, his sister Felicity, and his best friend Percy are on a Grand Tour of the Continent, after which Henry is expected to enter adulthood. As per the usual trope, things didn’t go as planned. The trio managed to steal a panacea (thanks to Henry), get captured by amateur pirates, and basically cause chaos wherever they went. The story revolves around these three characters, all of whom have lead potential. They are indeed the main characters in this book, although the story is told entirely from Henry’s perspective. Each of them is distinctly different, vibrantly characterized, and full of personality. Eine Version die den gestandenen Krieger Odin erschrecken und die Fragen aufwerfen. Die drängendste ist davon, was hat Odin so erschreckt das er sogar das königliche Fest von Gullveig verlässt. Loki ist neugierig und erfährt das die Vision etwas damit zu tun haben könnte, wer der Nachfolger von ihrem Vater wird. Dabei versuchen die Brüder ihrem Vater zur Hand zu gehen und während Thor wie immer in den weiten Gefilden des Universums unterwegs ist, verschlägt es Loki ausgerechnet nach Midgard, der Menschenwelt, wo er seltsame Morde aufklären soll die laut seinem Vater und der SHARP- Gesellschaft eindeutg auf asgardianische Magie zurückzuführen sind. Frisch erschienen und gleich gelesen: Loki - der Weg des Helden von Mackenzie Lee. Loki ist ja mein Lieblings-Bösewicht aus dem Marvel-Universum und ich mag seine Art sehr. Das zynische, verschlagene und doch auch oft missverstandene an ihm. Denn er möchte einfach genau so geliebt werden wie sein Bruder Thor. Doch als er zur Erde geschickt wird um einige Morde zu klären, die mit Magie zu tun haben sieht er seine Chance gekommen. Er findet aber nicht nur Spuren des Täters, sondern auch zu sich selbst. Wird sein dunkelster Wunsch Wahrheit? Zu Beginn war es noch etwas langatmig. Zwar geschehen Dinge, die Loki den Weg zur Erde bereiten, aber erst als er auf der Erde eintrifft wird es spannender. Der Schreibstil hat mir gut gefallen. Wer gern in die Götterwelt abtauchen möchte, dem kann ich Loki deshalb empfehlen. I finished my first novel of 2024!! This is big for me since last year I didn't read any prose, only comics and manga (nothing wrong with that!). It was fun to read a prose novel after so long, and a Loki story at that! I got this for Christmas and since @stellalasaurus was reading it too, I thought it could be fun to read along with her! This book was so so wonderful! If I'm being honest, it wasn't the most complex plot, and a lot of things were predictable, but it was the way Mackenzie Lee wrote the characters and Loki's internal dialogue that got me. The relationships between Loki and Theo and Loki and Thor were BEAUTIFUL. Their relationship with Amora was also fantastic, but in a completely different way haha. I loved seeing Loki just want to be good and happy and be themself, but going about it the wrong ways, as is the case with every good Loki story, that ends up backfiring some tragic way or another. It’s full of young defiant Bucky finding his place, and meeting new friends alone the way. The Winter Soldier in the 50s is on a mission and bits and pieces of himself and memories are coming back to him during this specific mission. 💭 My Thoughts: This book was so good!! I loved seeing young Bucky and how defiant and strong willed he was. And how that carried on through him being The Winter Soldier. The whole 40s story/timeline was heartfelt and rich in seeing Bucky being Bucky. In the 50s story/timeline was heartbreaking 💔. Seeing those memories break through and feeling his confusion and emotions was tough and just wanting to give that dangerous man the biggest hug! What wonderful night with the grands!! While we waited for Pepaw to get home from work we decorated a gingerbread house and our cups for hot cocoa!! The Hot Chocolate Express (the white suburban) took us out to see the Christmas lights and we sang Christmas songs for everyone to hear (yes the windows were down and we just snuggled up in Christmas blankets)!! I finally finished this little gem of a book. I am so smitten with these characters. Monty is definitely a character with flaws, but the reasons for his flaws become clear, and with Percy there holding up a mirror for him, there is so much character growth in him by the end of the book. This book has it all. Complex, endearing characters. Drama. Adventure. Pirates. It explores societal norms of the Georgian period in the most interesting way and I was rooting for the characters from the word go. The quality of the writing really surprised me. It is excellent. The only negative thing I could say, if pressed, was that Lee, as usual, uses a heavy hand with the similes and metaphors. They are unique and lovely and I really loved them, but there were so many that it might be distracting if you don’t like figurative language (but if you don’t, I can’t really relate.) For me this book is a trifecta. Characters: 5/5. Writing: 5/5. Plot 5/5. Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Hey, book nerds! I finished reading Winter Soldier Cold War by Mackenzi Lee this afternoon. The only reason it took me so long is because I'm reading IT at the moment as well 😁 SYNOPSIS: 1954: The Winter Soldier is the Soviet Union's greatest weapon. He has only one purpose: to obey orders. But he wasn't always the Winter Soldier. WHAT I LIKED: •Interesting background on Bucky before he became the winter soldier. •The flip between 1954 and 1941. •The shocking moments and some good plot twists. •The ending was dramatic. WHAT I DISLIKED: •Part of the timeline didn't quite match up with the film / comics (how and when Bucky met Steve Rogers). RATING: 4☆ TRIGGER WARNINGS: Medical trauma, death, gun violence, Body horror, Injury/Injury detail, grief, torture, car accident, suicide.

Do not even talk to me about the remake that was pretty much just a cheap knock off version where Freddy Krueger was ordered from Wish. Robert Englund will forever be the only Freddy Krueger, EVER!!! b o o k • r e v i e w 📚 - the nobleman’s guide to scandal and shipwrecks (montague siblings 3) by mackenzie lee - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - I honestly don’t think I’ve ever felt so neutral about a book before. Like I think about this and all I can come up with is “yup. I read it. 🤷🏼♀️” - It was really hard to read Adrian’s anxious thoughts, it made the book four times longer than it needed to be (there’s no WAY this story actually needed almost 600 large pages to tell) but that’s probably the point, anxiety makes things harder and makes things take longer. I get it, but it’s still hard to read. It took me over a month to read this (not entirely the book’s fault as I moved in the middle but still). I pushed myself to finish it cuz I had been looking forward to it for so long and all the publication delays made me really just want to get it off my list. - I also feel like a whole lot didn’t actually happen, and big chunks of time were just glossed over. Like getting to Iceland and the trek to where the Dutchman was happened in a few pages whereas they’d been in Amsterdam for like a third of it. It was paced unevenly. - I’m glad Monty and Percy finally got married and I’m glad Felicity wasn’t actually dead but this book wasn’t necessary at all to the series. I kept waiting for it to be revealed as a regular ocean animal they didn’t know about, but it never was? It was just a freaking dragon in the ocean. 😐 You can’t just throw in a dragon with no story behind it besides, “pirates are keeping them a secret and we only know about them because we’re running around with a pirate.” IT’S BAD WRITING. - I saw another review mention “feminist rage” and there was so much of it. You can tell the author wrote Felicity at the height of all this in the past few years. It was frustrating to read. I found it distracting to hear mantras that are tossed around so frequently today in the narrative of a woman from the 1800s. - And Johanna, giving everything up for her dog!? She had spent the entire novel being all about finding her mother’s things and taking what’s rightfully hers and “no man will take credit for my mother’s work” and she gave it all up for a dog!? One that is countries away, that might not even still be alive!? AND THEN, we don’t even know if she gets him back because the book ends with them still on the island. Like Johanna was kidnapped by the man and she believes his word that he won’t kill her dog? It’s ridiculous. - The last 100 pages actually went by the fastest, as there was a lot of action (that was rather unbelievable) but still more than the dithering of Felicity from the rest of it. - Incredibly disappointed. Fue todo lo que la autora imaginó que pasaba en ese lapso de tiempo lo que me dejó angustiada, porque conociendo al personaje como lo conozco, me destruyó ver por lo que tuvo que pasar, y a las cosas que decidió renunciar por no considerarse digno. Fuera de eso, que para mí fue un plus, me encontré con una historia interesante y divertida, que explora aspectos nuevos del personaje, y que a la vez sentí súper cercana, al punto que me fue inevitable escuchar la voz de doblaje de Tom Hiddleston mientras leía. Si son fans de Marvel y les gusta el personaje, se los recomiendo un montón. E incluso si no tienen idea de quién es Loki, estoy segura de que disfrutarían de esta historia de fantasía y misterio.

Sziasztok! Ti szeretitek a Marvel univerzumot? Esetleg van kedvencetek? A mai posztban az ehhez a világhoz kapcsolódó Fegyvernővérek c.könyvről szeretnék mesélni nektek. Szeretem a Marvel világát, így nagyon örültem, amikor az írónő e könyvei is kiadásra kerültek a kiadó jóvoltából. A Lokiról szóló részt nagyon szerettem, így izgatott lettem, amikor megláttam, hogy a következő történet főszereplői Gamora és Nebula lesz. A Galaxis őrzői filmet nagyon szerettem, Gamora mindig is szimpatikus volt. Nebula szerintem egy eléggé alulértékelt karakter, nála nem láttam akkora rajongást, viszont a filmekben őt is kedveltem, főleg idővel, ahogy haladt a történet. A Fegyvernővérek tehát a két testvérről szól. Gamora kap egy névtelen megbízást, hogy látogasson el a Rongydűne nevű bolygóra, ahonnan hozza el a bolygó szívét. Rövidesen követi őt Nebula is. Innen kezdve indulnak el az események sorozata. A történet váltott szemszögben, azon belül pedig E/3-ban íródott. Így nem olyan mélyen merülhetünk el a szereplőink gondolataiba, viszont így is két nézőpont által ismerhetjük meg az események alakulását. Szerettem egyébként azt, hogy így lett megírva, nekem nem szokott gondot jeleneti, ha így van megírva egy történet. A történet azokban az időkben játszódik, amikor még Thanos nem találkozott a Bosszúállókkal, tehát ily módón nem kapcsolódik a filmek világához, abszolút olvasható előzetes tudás nélkül is. A két karakter viszont elég jól megismerhetjük ezekben az időkben és képet adhatnak arról, hogy milyenek is ők valójában. Gamora és Nebula között nem felhőtlen a kapcsolat, hiszen az életük folyamán folyamatosan egymás ellen nevelték őket, állandó viszály, harag és versengés volt közöttük, hogy ki is a jobb Thanos szemében. Ennél a résznél fontos megemlítenem, hogy nagyon utáltam, ahogy Thanos bánt velük, főleg Nebulával. Abszolút megértem Nebula érzéseit, hogy ő nem volt sosem elég jó és hogy milyen volt a testvére árnyékban élnie. Nagy volt benne a bizonytalanság, nem érezte úgy, hogy ő bárhová is tartozna. Hoy confirmo una vez más que leer un libro sin expectativas o sin idea de lo que va es (la mayoría de veces) una de las mejores experiencias ☝🏽 Empecé a leer este libro casi de casualidad y no quise soltarlo hasta que terminó. Divertido, reflexivo, y con unos personajes únicos. Leerlo fue una maravilla y me hizo desear haberlo leído muchos años atrás, aunque probablemente no lo habría apreciado igual. Además, el plot aventurero en varios países sumado al one-sided-love (o no? 👀) del prota con su mejor amigo y al humor que está presente incluso en momentos no tan adecuados me hicieron sentir que esta era una lectura original y diferente a lo que suelo leer en novelas o romances YA. Sin embargo, no todo fue perfecto, ya casi para el final con tanto desastre que le pasa a nuestros protagonistas a lo largo del libro (inserte: 😅😂) considero que todo cerró de manera muy simple 🥲 No hay mención alguna de las consecuencias que tienen los hechos finales para los protagonistas o la sociedad, no se sabe qué pasa con algunos personajes secundarios, queda todo un poco cerrado por conveniencia. Asumo que tendremos un poco más de contexto en el siguiente libro, que sigue con las aventuras de nuestra hermana favorita: Felicity, peeero, hubiese sido una experiencia más redonda si se hubiese al menos puesto en una carta más algo de info sobre lo que pasa después de las decisiones finales que se tomaron. ------.------.----.----. No sé si aparece en la sinopsis de goodreads, pero aquí les dejo los trigger warnings: suicidio, homofobia, racismo, violencia doméstica. La verdad, es que pese a ser una historia divertida, ligera y romántica (a su modo), también toca temas bastante serios. I was surprised to find out that this is Mackenzie Lee’s debut novel. It’s extremely well written, and I don’t recall coming across any glaring editing errors, as I sometimes have when reading other debut novels. It’s been years (and years, and years…) since I first read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but it’s the type of storyline that’s pretty well known even if you haven’t read the book.
