This body has been through so much in my forty-three years. Most of it was my head cutting it down. I found it worthless because it didn’t look like all the bodies in the magazines. I have spent so much time comparing, photoshopping and filtering, putting it through so much so it could look just like everyone else’s, that I forgot to celebrate what it does look like, what it can do and what it has done. This body has carried me for forty-three years. It has shrouded my organs and kept me healthy and safe through stupid accidents. It has nourished me when I was ill and it had carried a human. It’s really rather a miracle if you think about it. What our bodies do that we take for granted. When I had my weight loss surgery, I pushed myself hard to be fit. I swore that I would never gain weight again! Guess what, twenty pounds later and a few inches bigger from the smallest I’ve ever been and my head tries to deny the progress I’ve made in the last seven years. I’ve been able to maintain this weight in a much healthier way than exercising four hours a day and killing myself to fit a narrative. While it works for some, it had turned into torture for me. Where I used to say “you can always make the time, don’t be a slacker”, I have been humbled by needing to work two jobs and needing time to sleep. There really are not enough hours in a day and what may seem like an excuse is actually a priority to do what’s most important for that day. I still struggle to like myself. A sad reality. I’m learning to very slowly show myself the respect I deserve. I can’t ask others to respect me if I can’t even respect myself. Three weeks out! It’s truly been a journey of self re-discovery. So far I have lost 15kg of fat from 101kg, 7.5” off my waist from 38”, cut my fat percentage from 30.7% down to 15.3% while gaining over 3kg of lean muscles. I thank God, my dearest, family & friends that supported me throughout these 5+ months. Cutting down carbs, increasing protein, more rest and the right training methods have brought me thus far. If you have been following me for a while - you KNOW this is HUGE!! I have been very focused and intentional with the food I am eating with the focus being on blood pressure, cholesterol and bone health. I have also been taking more time to learn about the different supplements MY body needs AND more importantly, how to take them for the maximum absorption! So much I had no idea about!! Last run before the Sunday half marathon and it was also a gear check run as the weather has changed drastically and it’s expected to rain/snow on Sunday In Zurich so I needed to check if this jacket( I love the color) would work !!! IF YOU HAVE THE ASPIRATION OF KICKING ASS AT 85, YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO BE AVERAGE IN YOUR 50s OR 60s When Lysa and I first began working together, she expressed concern that entering her 70s meant her time being physically active was past her. She couldn't sleep that well because her shoulder was constantly nagging. Her time playing with her grandson was limited due to getting winded quickly. She needed a strong cardiovascular system just as much as she needed strong muscles. In our last 2-3 decades of life, what's the point of delaying death if we aren't working to extend our quality of life? Your best chance of having coordination, strength, cognitive function and independence on the back half of life is by making an effort now: - Lift weights a few times a week - Perform Zone 2 or Steady State Cardio a few times a week - Walk as often as possible every day - Prioritize sleep quality + quantity - Eat colorful fruits & vegetables with lean animal proteins every day - Reduce or Remove alcohol Modern medicine has been helpful in extending our lifespan. Regardless of your age, whatever changes you make will have compounding interest. Balancing your life + balancing your plate is not always an easy task. When there’s constant interference with the demands of work and family, it’s easy to take shortcuts and stray from those healthy foundations. Getting back to basics with a balanced plate can also balance other things in the body. You may have more energy, have a better sleep at night and even feel better mentally. There are countless reasons why our health should still remain a priority with all of the interference going on in the world. I always try to plan meals around a vegetable(s) and protein, and always make sure my first few bites include both of these. Eating your carbohydrates last will help to keep blood sugar levels stable. Starting with bread, pasta, fries or rice will raise blood sugar and increase appetite and portions at that meal. Don’t forget your healthy fats! Making an olive oil salad dressing or cooking with avocado oil/real butter are a couple of ways to add these in. Avoid processed fats, seed oils and premade oily sauces and condiments whenever possible. Above is a balanced plate of fried rice with cauliflower, coleslaw with homemade dressing and a 5oz steak. Why shared experience matters. “I may not have walked in your shoes, but I’ve climbed the mountain next to you.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are some brilliant coaches out there who have never struggled with yo-yo dieting and have never been overweight. But I believe that you can never truely know what it takes to make long lasting life changes, unless you’ve been there yourself. Philosophers have argued for centuries that knowing how through ‘theory’ is fundamentally different from knowing how through ‘experience’. For example, however much you’re read about swimming in a book, doesn’t mean that you know how to swim. Shared life experience, empathy and the knowledge to make sustainable changes, based on science and psychology, is a pretty powerful combination.
