After a long break from reading slump, I finally have the energy to read one book 🥲 but because I'm still on that feeling, my chest way is to read their dialogue. Bad way to do that but at least I managed to get their story in my head. 😅🤣 The story follows Detective Lindsay Boxer as she investigates two parallel cases - a serial killer targeting young mothers and their children, crazy enough, he even dare to do this to his own child. And a cat burglar known as "Hello Kitty" who is robbing the homes of the rich and famous which also got a murder case and want to frame her. Did I get it? Yes... Do I think it's interesting? Yes... Do I like it? I give it a soso. Of course, although @jamespattersonbooks is my fav author for being a easy short chapter story, not all of the story are good. There are always an ups and downs for me. Overall this story was short and easy to read, it's like one chapter in 2-3 pages. For me as a reading slump, I managed to read this book Sadly I need to give 2/5 ⭐ one because of my mood and two because it's giving two crimes, one of the crime confused me. So ya. . . . . Completed Read: The Time Machine and The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells My Thoughts: - Was able to talk about The Time Machine in length with my dad since he saw the movie (seems to be safe to say that the movie captured the book pretty well) - Cool idea/dynamic between the Eloi and Morlocks and different take on how the human race moved backwards toward nature and away from further human intelligence as time moved forward. -The Invisible Man shows what happens when arrogance collides with the power that comes with invisibility and how that can go to one's head. -Both stories represent scientific breakthroughs that seem incredibly awesome on the surface but could actually open a whole new can of worms. Current read and current ambience track! Does anyone else love reading with ambient noise in the background? Not music, but specifically ambience: crackling fireplace, ocean waves, rain on windows? They help me get so immersed in my books and less likely to get distracted by other random background noises. I’ve been on a bit of a thriller / horror kick lately and have wanted to find some ambience specific to that genre. And so I found the Mystical Soundscapes YouTube channel! They do all sorts of subtly spooky tracks, with wind howling and cicadas chirping. This one, a foggy marshland, is pairing perfectly with Sharp Objects. Also, Sharp Objects is a captivating read so far. Every page, I’m amazed that this was her debut novel. Looking forward to diving back into it tonight with my eerie background noise. Monthly Update: The value of slow reading. April has been a crazy month for me! Between trying to send out a chapter draft of my dissertation, join a thesis presentation competition (which I won at the department/school level!), and prepare for two upcoming conferences, I got a little behind on my reading. Instead of rushing and not enjoying/digesting the novels on my list, I genuinely feel I owe it to the books, authors, and myself to slow down. Books should be savored, not shoved down the throat. 🌹🕵️♀️Was it worth the slog ? 🕵️♀️I have finally finished “The Seven Deaths and a 1/2 of Evelyn Hardcastle”, after a month which is the longest I have read a book in a year. This was a tough read and admittedly nearly gave up reading it several times… 🌹I feel the same about his other novel “ Devil in the Dark Water”, that the concept is very clever and original however the delivery for the first 300 pages is very slow. ⚠️Spoiler ⚠️ 🕵️♀️I feel frustrated by the ending as I wanted to know more Aidan and Anna’s true identity. I feel as if some of the first 300 pages could have been edited in order to make space for showing their lives outside of Blackheath as I feel as if there is lot unsaid. 🌹I want to know more about how Anna turned into a criminal / gang leader and what made her more empathetic towards others when she was at Blackheath. Ausgerechnet am letzten Tag im Jahr will er dann endlich seine lange to-do-Liste abarbeiten um seine Frau Johanna zurückzugewinnen und endlich sein Leben in den Griff zu bekommen. „Wenn es hart auf hart kommt, kann man alles schaffen, aber meistens kommt es weich auf weich, und da bleibt man besser liegen.“ Dieses Buch hat mich irgendwie aufgewühlt. Ich habe viel länger für die knapp 200 Seiten gebraucht als gedacht. Bin nicht richtig reingekommen und irgendwie fand ich es, im Gegensatz zu einigen anderen Rezensionen, nicht so lustig wie gehofft. Okay, es ist unglaublich gut geschrieben und die Gedanken von Lars sind so genial wie wirr zugleich. Aber wenn man selber viel zu oft prokrastiniert, Dinge anfängt ohne sie jemals zu Ende zu bringen, dann fühlt man sich einerseits seltsam ertappt und andererseits auch genervt. It is also heart rending at times, the loss of Cromwell’s family, his ghosts, the burnings all squeeze your heart. Fijne Koningsdag! 👑 Het stapeltje boeken dat ik nu aan het lezen ben kleurt toevallig errug goed. Toevallig ook allemaal een beetje ‘slow reads’, om verschillende redenen. Moderne Natuur is een heerlijk boek voor bij het ontbijt of voor het slapengaan. De Zaaier vind ik enorm goed, maar ook erg heftig, dus dat is er ook eentje om kleine stukjes tot je te nemen. En omdat ik hierna weer sowieso een vol jaar moet wachten op de volgende Emily Henry, probeer ik Funny Story ook een beetje uit te spreiden haha! What is one of your bad reading habits? One of mine is a tendency to read too fast. That said, I’m plodding through John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. The breadth and depth of this book is forcing me to slow the rather frenetic pace of reading I had set earlier in the year. I find that reading slowly is difficult for me, but absolutely worthwhile, because I want to be a reader that absorbs what they read rather than racing to the finish. Nog één nachtje slapen en dan wordt de shortlist van de Womens Prize for fiction bekend gemaakt. De afgelopen tijd las ik tien van de zestien boeken op de longlist en na een initiële teleurstelling, ben ik toch heel blij dat ik ieder jaar dit projectje aanga want ooo ik las toch wel weer heel veel moois! Deze vier boeken zijn mijn lievelings en zou ik heel graag terugzien op de shortlist 🥰 BROTHERLESS NIGHT heeft misschien wel de meest intrigerende openingszin die ik ooit las: “I recently send a letter to a terrorist I used to know.” Een ijzersterke roman over Sashi en haar drie broers tijdens de Sri Lankaanse burgeroorlog. Wat betekent het om als arts “do no harm” te belichamen in een ingewikkelde politieke strijd? Als je maar één boek van de lijst kan lezen, kies dan zeker deze! SOLDIER, SAILOR is een intiem portret van een anonieme jonge moeder, over het moederschap en alle struggles die daarbij horen. Over autonomie, identiteit, man-vrouw verhoudingen en bovenal over de liefde voor haar zoontje. Práchtig, zo mooi geschreven 💕 Ik hoop dat de jury dapper genoeg is om ook ENTER GHOST een plekje op de shortlist te geven. Deze roman leerde mij enorm veel bij & gebruikt op een hele slimme manier script en toneel om woorden te geven aan een immer broeiend conflict. ORDINARY HUMAN FAILINGS heb ik heel lang bewaard, omdat ik stiekem een beetje bang was dat ik het boek te heftig zou vinden. En het is ook heftig, deze roman van amper tweehonderd pagina’s van een dysfunctioneel gezin in een afschuwelijke moordzaak. Verwacht geen standaard crime boek, maar een treffend en boeiend inkijkje in de gedachtes van de gezinsleden. Ontzettend knap geschreven en zeker zin om meer van Nolan op te gaan pakken! Nu heeft de shortlist altijd zes boeken, maar wat mij betreft steken deze vier wel met kop en schouders erbovenuit. Om toch tot zes te komen, zou ik heel graag HANGMAN terugzien (zie ook mijn vorige post!) en 8 LIVES OF A CENTURY OLD TRICKSTER. Correr para terminar um livro é LOUCURA. 📚 Estes são alguns dos livros em que a leitura fluiu em ritmo diferente. São gêneros, tamanhos e temáticas bastante diferentes. Gostei de todos eles e, mesmo assim, a leitura foi mais lenta. 🌿 Neste mundo acelerado, onde cada momento parece uma corrida, permitir-se acelerar é mais do que permitido: é saudável. Sobre os livros da foto: - "Persuasão", Jane Austen: Foi o primeiro livro clássico que li em inglês e, apesar de não ser tão difícil quanto eu esperava, ainda precisei me habituar com a escrita, que é antiga, detalhista e, neste caso, em outro idioma. - "Como se fôssemos vilões", M.L Rio: Esse livro, que sempre aparece por aqui, foi bem desafiador. Embora seja um dos meus favoritos e a escrita seja contemporânea, a quantidade de referências a Shakespeare no original fez a leitura ser um pouco mais lenta. - "A lista de Schindler", Mietek Pemper: Essa história real, da perspectiva de um sobrevivente da Segunda Guerra Mundial, não tem uma temática muito leve, concorda? Por isso, a leitura acabou sendo mais lenta do que o de costume. - "O Retrato de Dorian Gray", Oscar Wilde: Assim como aconteceu com Jane Austen, precisei me acostumar com a linguagem utilizada, já que é um livro de 1890. Nesta edição maravilhosa da Biblioteca Azul, tem uma quantidade considerável de notas de rodapé; eu quis ler todas e pesquisar um pouco mais, o que levou tempo. - "As Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo", George R.R Martin: Todos os livros levaram mais tempo do que o de costume e não foi só pelo tamanho. Foi também pelo nível de detalhamento, o tempo de construção de mundo, adaptação de novas regras, trocas de pontos de vista. Todo o contexto. 📖 Que a sua pilha de livros seja um lembrete de que está tudo bem ler devagar. Que ler não é um esporte competitivo e, quantidade não é qualidade! BOOK REVIEW "Magisteria", Nicholas Spencer My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐/5 Goodreads Average Rating: 4.13 Spencer’s dense, scholarly account of the inextricably intertwined histories of science and religion through the ages covers some fascinating subject-matter. Nonetheless, I can’t help feeling that I didn’t quite get what I wanted out of this book. This is probably for two main reasons. First, Spencer’s text is very much a descriptive history, while I was hoping to have this accompanied by more of a philosophical debate. Second, while I read my fair share of academic non-fiction, I found Spencer’s text particularly inaccessible. It took me much longer than usual to get through, and digest, each page. At the start of each chapter, I’d be excited by the prospect of its contents, but would then emerge at the other end not really feeling that I’d learned as much as I’d hoped. Further, I wish he’d given more space on the page to consider the relationship between science and religion in contemporary society. The last few pages begin to grapple with some really interesting metaphysical questions at the intersection of AI and ethics, but unfortunately, this section feels very much like an afterthought. 4x recent gelezen eboeken die op Kobo Plus staan ✨ DUBBELGANGER van Naomi Klein staat op de shortlist van de Womens prize for non-fiction en is het eboek dat ik nu aan het lezen ben. Pfoe, wat een hersenkraker! Wel heel interessant, dus in kleine stukjes gaan we naar het einde 💪🏻 EEN SOORT EELT van Rinske Bouwman stond bovenaan mijn ‘hype’-lijstje en it did not disappoint. Een beetje een apart en absurd verhaal over de Nederlandse Sarlag, die opgroeide in Mongolië, maar terugkeert naar Utrecht na een mysterieuze en verdrietige gebeurtenis. “Goed raar”, appte ik naar boekenclubvriendinnen. Het vriesvak in de supermarkt zal nooit meer hetzelfde zijn, maar bovenal vond ik dit ook een prachtige roman over familie, identiteit en rouw. IK GA NAAR DE SCHAPEN van Marieke de Maré zag ik vaak voorbij komen als aanbeveling voor liefhebbers van Dezelfde maan. Nu is dat nog steeds mijn lievelingsboek van dit jaar, dus móest ik dit boek wel lezen. Een stil portret, veel blijft onbesproken in deze onconventionele roman die speelt met ruimte op papier. Had er misschien iets meer van verwacht, maar vond het wel erg mooi. HANGMAN las ik vanwege de Womens Prize for fiction longlist en is een perfect voorbeeld van een boek dat ik waarschijnlijk niet zo snel zelf zou hebben opgepakt, maar waar ik wel enorm van heb genoten. Completed Read: 11 Paper Hearts by Kelsey Hartwell My Thoughts: - A nice, easy read about a girl who can't remember 11 crucial weeks of her life after she had an accident but is given 11 paper hearts to help fill in the gap by a secret admirer. - I enjoyed seeing Ella find her way as she struggles with not remembering a period of time where she knows her life was changing what with breaking up with her boyfriend at the time, etc. - This book was equally about sisters' relationships and romantic relationships. Spoiler alert - the whole idea and secret admirer was Ashley who enlisted Andy's help - Andy was frustrating at times because some of the things he said I felt were out of line and I'm also not sure I agree with how he handled Ella's amnesia. 📖 How stepping away from bookstagram has changed my reading habits 📖 So, I’m, you may have noticed I haven’t been as active on here lately… I’ve gone from posting daily to maybe monthly? With my burnout, I had to step back, and I’ve actually learned a lot about myself from the experience: 📖 I’ve reached the point where I feel like nothing is authentic. This is far from the truth - I know this community and you all are amazing - but being so immersed in social media, trying to sort post from promotion, my brain reached a point where it no longer trusts anything it sees online. 📖 I’ve strayed from my reading tastes and no longer know what I like. Last month? I read Crescent City and Fourth Wing - while I enjoyed them, they didn’t captivate me. When I stepped back and took a book off my TBR recommended to me at a bookstore, I finally broke my reading slump. 📖 One of my New Year’s resolutions was to cut down on my overconsumption (I say with a Starbucks in hand) of books, to switch to buying secondhand, to trade, to read through my TBR and find them a good home (either with me or someone who will appreciate them more). This has been fantastic for me! 📖 Between my changing tastes and my “old” books, I just don’t feel like I’m all that present online anymore. I’ve realized I don’t mind that. But I would like to find more people to do book swaps with, sharing books that affected us. 📖 On top of this, I’ve been a terrible author: I struggle to post about myself and my books online because it feels like bragging/pride, something which I struggle with (thanks, imposter syndrome.) My next book comes out in less than three months and I’ve barely posted about it! So pardon me if I do 😂 So that’s where I’m at now! Sie hält diesen für verarmt und ahnt nicht, dass er sein Geld beiseite geschafft hat, um es ihr nach seinem Tod zu vererben. Tattooed Hearts by @authordarlenerodriguez ARC Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book filled my heart from start to finish, not just for the words on the page but for what and how much I know they mean and how special they are. How it’s something for someone to pick up and for them to be able to relate to a main character for the first time because not everyone is ‘perfect’. There is so much in here that squeezed on my heart, which hurt so much more with how full it was feeling. Every thing is handled so well and it just is how things are in life which is just so important. And for the actual story, the characters, I love them, I love their journey, I just love it all. But this is just so much more than just the characters which makes me love it even more. My words in a review can’t do it justice, so just go give it a read! 💜
