Court of Dragons by Frost Kay Not going to lie I downloaded this one because of the cover. I love the cover 🤪 I listened to this one as an audiobook. I usually listen on 2-2.5x speed. I had to bump the speed up to 3x because for whatever reason I didn’t like the male narrator. He did a good job, was clearly understandable even at 3x speed so I can’t really explain why, it just bothered me. I love the idea of this story. I’m interested to learn more about the dragons especially but I’m not sure I’ll pick up the next book. It was a quick and enjoyable enough however I wish I had been drawn into it more. Everything felt like it was just scraping the surface of the story with lots of telling. I desperately wanted it to show me more, to drag me into Wrens struggle and not let me go but it just never happened. I’m also not sure how the male love interest can be redeemed enough to become lovers. I’m assuming it will develop more in the next book but some things are not redeemable in my eyes. How does one end up loving the man who killed her people, parents and betrothed? ❓QOTD❓: Do you or have you ever bought a book because of the cover alone? That was the case for me with this book. ~ Review ~ ⭐⭐ / 5 stars This cover is soo creepy / amazing / eye-catching and it was my sole reason for buying it at first. That being said, I didn't read the blurb or really look up the concept before jumping in because I like going in blind. Unfortunately I could tell very early on that this book was not for me. I ended up DNFing around the 50 page mark for a few reasons. First, it has that historical / classic vibe to it right from the beginning which I'm not a fan of in general. I like my stories based in the present or even the future if done correctly. I'm not a fan of historical based books. Secondly, going back to read the blurb before I decided to DNF, I realized that the grief aspect is most likely going to be the major thing going on in this one. I'm all for grief / loss as an element in horror novels but don't like when it's the main focus above all else. Thirdly, I just couldn't get into the writing style. I didn't like how the time periods were being mixed together to jump from past to present. It was too choppy. Maybe if it had just started at the beginning of the story of them moving into the house and unfolded from there without the time period switches it would have held my attention better. Autorka zaraża czytelnika jej ciekawością i zachęca, by rozwikłać wraz z nią zagadkę tajemniczej choroby. Nie tylko Elena jest jednak warta zwrócenia uwagi. Gustaw to również intrygująca postać, a jego tajemnica i smykałka do eksperymentów w świetny sposób wzbogaciły historię. Trzeba też przyznać, że każda z postaci, jakie występują w historii nie jest przypadkowa i pełni swoją rolę, a niektóre nawet potrafią nieźle zaskoczyć! Motyw choroby także został przedstawiony w przystępny sposób, pozwalając czytelnikowi podejmować próby rozwiązywania zagadki wraz z bohaterami. Nie będzie to historia dla każdego - takie klimaty trzeba lubić, jednak ja jestem zachwycona. Currently reading stack! I’ve been so behind on my book review posts, but my weekly posts have been going strong. 😁💪🏼 It’s Orilium time, and I’m participating with two characters for the first time. I’ve been having a blast trying to juggle the two characters while also participating in the side quest. I’m hoping to participate in the Guild book club as well. 😃📚 “Drinker of Souls” is my introduction to Jo Clayton’s books. When I needed a random pick from three books for one character, I used three Clayton books to decide where I would start. When I found this book at the bookstore, I was looking for another one of Clayton’s books for my Whelan cover challenge, but the cover and title of this one pulled me to it. I’m enjoying it so far, but I’m not very far in. I’m already super curious to see how this series goes. “Shardik” is a book I picked up because of Stephen King. I have never read “Watership Down,” though I would like to. This is considered the sequel, but I haven’t found it hard to get into the book without the knowledge of the first book. The world is fascinating, and I’m excited to go back and read the first book after this. And lastly, “Storm of the Century” is a screenplay that I’ve been meaning to get to for a while. I think this was the first SK movie I ever watched, and I loved it. I’m only through the first Act, and I’ve already picked up on some things I know I didn’t notice in the movie. I have borrowed the movie from the library as well, so I am looking forward to comparing the two. Dankjewel aan de auteurs, uitgeverijen en Vrouwenthrillers voor de recensie-exemplaren. Hier word ik vrolijk van! ‘De blokhut’ is de nieuwste thriller van Noortje Brink, die ik voor Vrouwenthrillers.nl mag recenseren. Ik ben grote fan van de novelles van Noortje Brink en bovendien sprak deze cover me meteen aan. Loft Books contacteerde me met de vraag of ik zin had om deel te nemen aan de blogtour van het nieuwe boek van Lianne Reijntjes: ‘Bestemming Barcelona’. Natuurlijk! Een boek met die titel en die cover nodigt toch enorm uit om het verhaal te verslinden. Ook Jade Vening contacteerde me of ik mee wil doen aan de blogtour van haar debuutverhaal. ‘De win-win situatie’ verschijnt binnenkort bij Harper First. Hoe flashy is ook deze cover! Ik heb het ebook nog niet ontvangen en dus ook nog niet gelezen, maar Jade weet met haar instapost alvast mijn nieuwsgierigheid sterk te triggeren! Dan hebben we het nog niet gehad over de korte inhoud van al deze boeken. Eén voor één verhalen die me erg leuk lijken. This is the best book I’ve read in quite a while. It was a #coverbuy for sure, but one of the booksellers at @littleprofbham told me how much she’d enjoyed it while she was ringing me up. #TheCartographers is the story of Nell, the brilliant cartographer daughter of two brilliant cartographer parents, whose argument with her father over a map she found in a box of seemingly worthless crap ruined her life. More specifically, her father ruined her life in the course of the argument. But now, seven years later, he’s dead and it’s up to Nell to solve the mystery surrounding his death. Her journey reconnects her with her old flame Felix, whose life was also drastically changed by the same argument between Nell and her father all those years ago, as well as Swann, her father’s right-hand at the New York Public Library, and the only person in the entire cartography world who tried to help her when she was down. Over the course of almost 400 pages, we meet Francis, Eve, Ramona, and Bear, friends of her parents from college who have been carrying around a lifetime of regret and one enormous secret all these years, plus Wally, the friend who maybe never was. We enter rooms and even cities that shouldn’t exist, but somehow do because of the magic of maps. I absolutely loved this book. It was such a novel premise and so beautifully written, with multiple perspectives and arcs. @pengshepherd is a brilliant storyteller. I usually don’t enjoy books that skip around between characters’ perspectives because I forget whose story I’m in at that moment and get all turned around, but the switch in this book was always clearly marked and I had no trouble following along. The ending isn’t what I hoped for, but I’m still glad it ended how it did. I used to do a near criminal amount of cover buying, but I’ve been pretty good at withholding from it this past year. Now, if the story doesn’t intrigue me, I’m not buying it. BUT, when I came across 𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐲 I couldn’t NOT bring a copy home with me. I’m not saying the synopsis doesn’t pique my interest, I honestly have no idea if it does. ☺️ #surprisehit of the month 😳 Tbh I didn’t really care for #wandance AT ALL cause I’m just not really into #dancing or into #sportsmanga in general ..like most of the time I’ll need an #anime prior to catch my attention ☺️..like in #danceroom or #haikyuu 😅.. But this one was a #coverbuy, which I also don’t do often 😆..but the cover is really stunning ..like his gaze is just piercing though you :))..I really felt the passion :)).. But when I looked through it I kinda got disappointed by the #artstyle tbh 🙃..it was one of those manga were the #coverart looks totally different than the storyart.. I initially didn’t really like it ..cause of its simplicity..most characters have weird proportions and their faces look so small yet big 🙈..and I kept mistaken characters cause they all looked super similar .. BUT I ended up not minding it too much and actually liking it ..cause the story and the protagonist got me hooked 💕💕😍 The #malelead is such a adorable cutie 🥺..he doesn’t have big ambitions..or super rare talents ..he just wants to dance ..but due to him being incredibly self aware he kinda got a trauma to dance infront of people cause he often times assumes that everyone is watching him ..or laughing at him .. He also has a #stutter 🥺which makes it hard for him to express himself or make himself heard ..yet dance give him hope ..so he end up in the dance club with a rather „strange“ and extremely oblivious girl ..and they both couldn’t be any cuter 💕☺️ Im really looking forward to the next volume 💕☺️ Do you like to dance ?🌝 Tbh I also don’t like to dance in clubs or weddings 🙈..especially nowadays when anyone has a smartphone and takes videos anywhere .. I just finished another TBR backlog book, and received a notification that one of my library holds has come through 😂. I think my mantra for this year should be "I will not be deceived by a pretty cover" but then I'd be lying to myself. I will always be sucked in by a pretty cover, even when it is a deceiving evil trick! Y'all this book was just...hmmm idk. I don't have the right words for it. It was beautiful and devastating and now I'm sitting at work contemplating life and wanting to go home and think about it. Okay fine, I want to do that all the time, but after reading this book, even more so. I unknowingly picked the perfect bookmark to accompany this reading journey though. I am still not over Eddie and I don't think I'll ever be. Just like I will remember this book for a long time. I know my ramblings probably aren't making any sense, but oh well. Robinson begins by comparing the multiple Babylonian gods, who were capricious and duplicitous in their dealings with mankind, with the Hebrew God, who shows mercy and grace and forgiveness and kindness and compassion in regards to his Creation. She acknowledges that Biblical writers most likely borrowed from these earlier Babylonian sources and stories, but she is able to articulate and maintain her own beliefs while allowing for this appropriation. Robinson's perceptive conclusions are that the Hebrew deity is mysteriously able to maintain a covenant and family relationship with its Creation, whether or not the characters in Genesis are seen as completely honorable or not. This Hebrew God is somehow capable of allowing mankind to act with free will outside of the "law" and yet still honor agreements and give blessings that extend into the future. Perhaps the most impactful ideas for me were her thoughts regarding history and how this God uses any human decisions, good or bad, to bring about the continuation of his covenant in ways that then become what we call history. The audience for these quite erudite musings will be those who already have some familiarity with the Bible and/or theology. I consider myself fairly familiar with Biblical theology, but I still struggled at times to fully understand Robinson's ideas. I have not read Robinson's non-fiction before, although I do own a collection of her essays. I will now be moving that book up to the forefront of my reading. I highly recommend Reading Genesis to those who are interested in religion and Biblical studies, or to those who simply enjoy reading Marilynne Robinson.
