I was thinking about bookstagram, and the biggest reason I don’t post much is because social media triggers my anxiety if I don’t do it correctly. Also though I’ve been reading only comfort reads and slowly making my way through ARCs (also a lot of books i read are digital through the library and so I don’t have pictures and I’m still deciding the best and most me way to share those books and reviews. Tips and suggestions are appreciated 🍄🤍☕️ I love it, I m happy to have this funky little guy on my shelf. This Cover is a delight to my mind. Let’s end today’s posts on a positive note…Heartbreaking, but wonderful book about some very tough subjects. I really enjoyed the audiobook. To me the ending was perfect! 4.5⭐️ ….possibly 5⭐️, but not sure why I’m holding back for that rating. 81/24 #mayreading #audiobooks #libbyappaudiobooks #hooverpubliclibrary #locallibrarylove #avidreader #audiobookscountasreadingtoo #alwaysreading #myreadingera #letsendonapositivenote

Sadly, another book fail for me 😖….2.5⭐️ (and I feel like I’m being generous)I was disappointed in the ending. It fell flat for me. Abrupt ending for such a build up all through the book. Kept thinking this was going to be a Rosemary’s Baby scenario. I’d say don’t waste your time, unpopular opinion. 🙅🏻‍♀️80/24 #mayreading #audiobooks #bookfailforme #alwaysreading #avidreader #dontwasteyourtime #unpopularbookopinion #mysterythriller #endingfellflat

📚 Book Review 📚 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕠𝕟𝕝𝕪 𝕨𝕒𝕪 𝕥𝕠 𝕤𝕥𝕠𝕡 𝕒 𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕝𝕜𝕖𝕣 𝕚𝕤 𝕥𝕠 𝕓𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕖 𝕠𝕟𝕖 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕗. Alexandra, River, Lucy, Bridget and Natalie are friends with the worst thing in common....they all have stalkers. When one of the group is murdered just days after their stalker is released from prison the group receives a death threat stating one of them will die in 10 days time. It's then that the group decides it's time to take drastic action to keep themselves safe. Follow the story as the group try to look out for each other as well as themselves. Is everyone in the group who they say they are? Or is it a case of keeping your friends close but your enemies closer. What. A. Book. Each chapter is from a different POV and just shows how truly terrified and paranoid each character is. Not only questioning their stalker but questioning the intentions of their friends. How Cally can write a book so gripping and intense is a talent in itself but to make the reader feel like they are in the room when things happen is genius. At points I felt my heart quicken willing the character on and out of some awful situations. Hearing Cally speak of her own stalker experience when I saw her at her recent book tour really broke my heart. The strength anyone must have to speak of something so traumatic is astounding. “How far would you run to escape your past? Venice Beach, Los Angeles. A paradise on earth. Tourists flock to the golden coast and the promise of Hollywood. But for eight strangers at a beach front hostel, there is far more on their mind than an extended vacation. All of them are running from something. And they all have secrets they’d kill to keep ...” This is a crazy book with so many characters all hiding/running away from something and end up at a run down hostel in Venice Beach, Los Angeles. It has so many little twists and turns throughout the book, it’s fabulous! I found myself staying up late to finish after promising myself just one more chapter. John Marrs does it again! 4/5

🍯 The Honeys - by @theryanlasala 🍯 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The new benchmark for psychedelic thrillers! The way this book had me so hooked I had to get the audio book too so I couldn’t keep reading whilst at work. Even having finished it 4 days ago, I can’t stop thinking about it. This plot balances the eeriness and mystery of a surreal YA cult style horror with themes of gender fluidity and grief in a way that felt so well thought out and well rounded. I enjoyed the writing style immensely, particularly the character interactions which felt so real! If it’s not already add this to your TBR right now! ☀️ ARC REVIEW 🩷 Content Warning: Infertility ‘The Right Place’ by Sophia Money-Coutts is an unexpected gem of a novel about finding happiness, love - and yourself - in the most unexpected place. Telling the story of Maggie Lemon, who has spent the last seven years giving up more and more of what she loves on her IVF journey with her husband Mungo, this book explores the grief and transformational power of an unanticipated inheritance. Set mostly in Provence, I enjoyed the combination of summer holiday vibes and deep emotional layers. This book bears many of the hallmarks of the author’s other works, with the lead character being a nice upper-middle class woman with a pushy mother and a mostly traditional outlook - and while I have enjoyed most of these, what I loved about this one was how the French hotel setting thrust Maggie into a different environment and allowed different parts of her personality to blossom. With sprinklings of romance (and a HEA, of course), this novel was reflective, dramatic and funny and far more about Maggie as a person rather than as part of a couple, which I appreciated. I loved the varied and hilarious guests at Le Figuer, as well as the intriguing staff member Audrey and Maggie’s fabulous friend Jamie. I also laughed at the image of a famous movie star in hiding getting stuck into hotel renovations, and greatly enjoyed the donkeys! I was deeply affected by the raw and honest way Maggie grappled with decisions about continued fertility treatments and her confidence in reclaiming her own agency. This gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me, and I really recommend it for anyone looking to be swept away to the south of France for something slightly different and altogether beautiful. I received an advance Digital Review Copy of this book from the publisher @hqstories via @netgalley. The opinions expressed in this review are my own. 🗓️ RELEASE DATE: 18 Jul 2024 🏷️ #netgalley #arcreview #therightplace #sophiamoneycoutts

Anyway, I'm about 100 pages in and so far it has been hard to put the book down once I got into a good reading-space. My favourite part so far, was around page 34/35-ish, it was a scene about a person honing his craft, the way it is described was resonating with me, as it felt similar as to how I describe it when I RP with my friends and have my OC's doing something similar, except, @hallistarling is writing it MUCH better than I ever could. That being said, there are alot of intruigin little scenes and details that catches me, I feel like I can really see these people in my mind while reading. #reader #booksta #booklist #books #coupdecoeur #hallistarling #gayromancenovel #romantasy #idontknowwhotoship #currentlyreading #mayreading

📚some of my recent reads that I haven’t posted yet!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading funny story and book lovers, but found the night tiger a little difficult to read. the historical fiction is really interesting in the night tiger and I loved learning about that, but the relationship between the main character and her stepbrother was a little weird so it was a little off putting for me. nothing but good things to say about funny story and book lovers because I related to the relationship struggles in both and the endings are just so reflective #reading #booklover #book #mayreading #thenighttiger #funnystory #booklovers #readingcommunity #readingjournal #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #books #booksofmay #mayreads

Queen Charlotte - Julia Quinn (@juliaquinnauthor 👑) & Shonda Rhimes (@shondarhimes @shondaland 👑) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “George, I will stand with you between the heavens and the earth. I will tell you where you are….Do you love me?” Dearest, gentle reader - with the return of us all to the classic @bridgertonnetflix series and our journey into this seasons most elusive bachelor Mr. Colin Bridgerton and his scandalous alliance with a certain Miss. Penelope Featherington, we cannot deny that we watched all of the first part of Season 3 in an afternoon…and then proceeded to put it back on repeat for the following weeks. We were in desperate need of more, and so we journey back to the 1760’s to read all about Queen Charlotte and King George III. We adored the mini series spin off all about the dazzling Queen Charlotte, and the book follows so closely it was like watching the series all over again. Julia’s wonderfully engaging writing strikes again in her collaboration with Shonda in this book, and we just could not put it down. Tore through it in three days (which is quick for us!). We loved the differences with the series and the new stories it delves into, whilst providing all of the beautiful details of emotion and depth that only a book can provide. We loved this read; it was light, it was summery and it was everything someone in need of a Bridgerton fix in the wait for Part 2 could need. Cannot wait for part 2, but this book provided a 9/10 prequel which was emotional and so captivating 💛 #queencharlotte #juliaquinn #shondarhimes #bridgerton #bridgertonsonnetflix #bridgertonnetflix #georgeIII #prequel #mayreads #mayreading #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #getthisonyourbookshelf #bookstagramuk

A love letter to Blue Sisters, on publication day 💙🩵💙🩵 It’s the book that everyone and their mother is talking about, and for good reason. This is messy, emotive, nuanced writing on grief and sisterhood, and how they can become entwined within one another. It’s a story of family ties, and ways in which those ties can reach out and grasp each other at the darkest moment.  Blue Sisters follows sisters Avery, Bonnie and Lucky, all grieving the loss of their fourth sister, Nicky, from different sides of the world. As they return to their family home in New York, they’re forced to reckon with not only grief, but ambition, addiction, and what it means to be a sister. I was a Cleopatra and Frankenstein fan, but I’m a Blue Sisters FAN; it deals with grief and sisterhood in a way that reassures you, this is no debut novel. It’s truly truly fantastic, with one of my favourite opening lines ever (swipe to see 👀) Interrogating the relationships that we have with our sisters and with ourselves, and how sisterhood can define a person, it had me bawling on the train up to Manchester when I read it - that’s how you know a book is good. It’s some of the best writing on the unpredictability and sharpness of grief that I’ve read in a loooong time, and it’s one that you all need to read too 🙏 So get on it!!! Have you read Blue Sisters yet? Will you be picking it up? 👀💫

💌mid(ish) month check in💌 Happy mid-May (well a little past) everyone! Can you believe we’re almost 5/12 of the way through the year, wild. It’s certainly flying by but I’ve also accomplished so much this year which I feel great about. Now, on to my mid-may check in featuring some classics I hope to read this summer! May has been a hectic month to say the very least. I officially moved out of my apartment in nyc (and yes I already have fomo). Right now I’m house hopping a bit in CT before heading to Dallas this weekend to spend a couple months with my parents before moving to Delaware to start my PhD in English. 📖 So far this month I’ve only fit in two books (which is the slowest I’ve been yet) — Nightbitch and Monsters We Have Made. I’m currently hoping to finish up The Dragon Republic, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, and Olympus Texas by the end of the month. I have a flight and a week to finally relax so hopefully I can accomplish that goal. 📺 We know I’m not a huge tv watcher but I’m gearing up to finally watch part 1 of season 3 of Bridgerton. I know I hate that I haven’t watched it yet but as I’m house hopping I don’t really have an outlet to dive in and enjoy it. I also managed to see 4 Broadway shows this month before I left nyc — The Notebook, Cabaret, Illinoise, and Water for Elephants. 🎧 TTPD still on repeat, anyone else? I’ve also been getting my Sabrina Carpenter time in as well on Spotify. I’ve fallen very behind on my podcast @heartstartspounding and absolutely plan to catch up on it this summer. I’m putting in a goal to walk either on the treadmill or outside to listen to episodes. I used to be a big listener of podcasts at the gym but I’ve done way more group fitness lately which means I don’t listen to my own things. 💐 My little summary up top gave you a bit of my what I’m currently doing haha. But what I accomplished this month was spending ample time in nyc before I moved out. I saw Broadway shows, for dinner with friends, read in cafes and Central Park, and even took one more trip to the MET. Excited for some fun adventures in Dallas this summer (hit me up if you live there and have recs). ❓answer one of the prompts above❓

Book Review (34): In the Midst of Winter by Isabel Allende. The latest read for my family book club, I was excited to read this backlist Allende. She’s one of my favorite authors! In this book, the three main characters become linked after a chance encounter during an epic snowstorm. The three are living in New York City, but in true Allende fashion, they’re all connected to or from Central or South American countries. ⁣ ⁣ The plot moves forward through the events of the snowstorm, but also tells the backstory of each character and how they got to NYC. I loved this part of the book the most, and I wanted to stay in these brief histories, full of so much more potential. But the main part of the story was compelling too. Sometimes Allende gets bogged down in historical fiction, but this was a perfect mix of her strong storytelling, historical context, and a little bit of mystery too! ⁣ ⁣ Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣ ⁣ I thought this book was classic Allende, like 20+ years ago Allende, but it was more recent, written in 2017. I must have missed it somehow! I’m looking forward to hearing what my family book club thought of the story. Fun fact about the author, she starts writing every one of her books on January 8th. I’m not sure if she starts something new EVERY January 8th, but every book she’s written for the last 3 decades or so she’s started that day. I love that little quirky tradition. ⁣ ⁣ #justbooksbookstagram #inthemidstofwinter #bookreview #kolvigliteraryclub #bookclub #mayreading #booksbooksbooks #reviewsmatter #reviewsneedlovetoo #backlistbook #withmylibrarycard #readmorebooks #readmorewomen

BOOK REVIEW "Fourth Wing", Rebecca Yarros My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 Goodreads Average Rating: 4.59 The hype surrounding this book is so ludicrously off-the-charts that I had to see for myself what all the fuss is about. Based on reviewer comments, I expected either some enjoyable light entertainment or an utter disappointment. Instead, I find I’ve entirely succumbed to the allure of “Fourth Wing”; I couldn’t read this book quickly enough, and genuinely struggled to put it down (honestly, who needs food or sleep when you have a magic school, dragons, and a shadow-wielding book boyfriend par excellence?) I won’t pretend that this is a great work of literature, but Yarros’ writing is perfectly serviceable, and she has a knack for writing fast-paced, exciting plots with real stakes, likeable characters, and a heavy dose of found-family and romance. I particularly enjoy the training sequences and the magical competition aspects of this book, although its best feature is easily the dragons, who are wonderfully characterised (I adore Andarna). Violet is a likeable and engaging protagonist, Xaden makes me swoon, and that excellent plot twist on the final page sets up an incredibly promising sequel. By contrast, Yarros’ treatment of the wider political machinations that underlie her main plot are less well-executed, and her secondary characters don’t quite have the vibrancy of - for instance - Sarah J. Maas’ Inner Circle, but I have hopes that these aspects will improve in the next book. Overall, therefore, I’m surprised by how obsessed I am with this book, and I’m counting the days until “Iron Flame” comes out in paperback. #bookreview #bookrecommendation #goodreadsreadingchallenge #readingchallenge2024 #springreading #springreads #mayreading #mayreads #newbooks #paperback #fantasybooks #fantasyseries #fantasyromance #romantasy #fourthwing #rebeccayarros #theempyrean #fivestarbooks #favouritebooks #adultfantasy #heretherebedragons #dragonbooks #bookboyfriend #xadenriorson #bookstagrammademedoit #violetsorrengail #ishipit

✨BOOK REVIEW✨ Shooters - Julia Boggio ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ PROMPT: *gifted* Pick this up as your next holiday read! Fast-paced, easy reading, not as predictable as I first thought and a lot to pack into 357 pages! This book is really entertaining and read like a movie and when explaining to my partner what it was all about, he actually said he would watch it! I cannot wait to read the second book in this trilogy and will be keeping my eye out for the third. I think Stella’s character development is really good and interesting. I don’t think there needed to be SO many comments regarding body size but I think overall the characterisation is brilliant. I didn’t think this was that steamy at all but has a bit of spice. I found the book is more about her life with a little bit of romance rather than focusing it around a rom-com genre. All in all, I really enjoyed reading it and can imagine it would be the perfect read on holiday. Overall, if you’re looking for your next cheesy comedy book with a dash of romance, this is the one for you this Summer. Thankyou so much to Literally PR, Home By Midnight Publishing and Julia Boggio for a gifted copy of the book and allowing me to be part of the book tour. 🩷🩷🩷 #shooters #romance #comedy #romcom #giftedbook #book #bookish #booktour #books #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookworm #booklover #amreading #readmorebooks #reading #read #readmorebooks #mayreads #mayreading #literallypr #juliaboggio

I am reading little by little the books from my @illumicrate subscription. This one caught me by surprise. I love dual POV, but multiple are sometimes a little too much. It was perfect! Wedding season is upon us and even the Guncle needs to travel … The Guncle Abroad takes us back into Steve Rowley’s Guncle world but five years have passed since the event in The Guncle and Patrick’s brother Greg has fallen in love again and is preparing his marriage to an Italian Marquesa right on the shore of Lake Como but his kids Maisie and Grant, a teen and a tween by now, are not on board. This puts the spotlight on Patrick and his relationship with the kids yet again as he takes the kids on a whirlwind tour of Europe to take their minds off the impending nuptials and teach them a thing or two about love and family. If you liked the Guncle I am sure you will like this one as well. This book is clever, witty and deeply emotional as Maisie and Grant are grappling with their dad getting remarried. Steve Rowley is a master at the art of balancing the light and heavy, deeply philosophical thought and witty banter. This was fun to read ! Have you been to a “cool” location wedding ? A beach or a mountaintop, a castle or a barn ? This book was out yesterday and I was able to read an eARC provided by the publisher @putnambooks the opinions expressed are of course my own ! #theguncleabroad #putnambooks #stevenrowley #pubday #bookbirthday #bookish #newrelease #mustread #booksta #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booklover #bookworm #bibliophile #reader #readersofinstagram #readersofig #mostanticipated #bookreader #mayreads #mayreading #newbooks #bookstabuddies #booksbooksbooks #booksbooksandmorebooks #booksandcastles #spring

Hey book nerds! After this book being on my TBR for at least a couple of years, I have finally read Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. SYNOPSIS: Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible—assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul. WHAT I LIKED: *Interesting from the get go . The first chapter straight away had interesting plot twists. *Speaking of plot twists, there was a lot of good ones, especially in the second half of the book. *Lots of dramatic and sad moments. *I was really glued to the last part of the second half ; so much was happening it was brilliant. *An interesting ending; can't wait to read the next book. *Loveable characters; so much so that if anything happened to them it was a big shock. WHAT I DISLIKED: *Some parts ; mainly the first half; had a lot of mechanical and scientific bits that just kinda went straight over my head. *Characters are not really diverse at all. RATING: 4.5☆ TRIGGER WARNINGS: Death, war, death of a parent, violence, bullying, animal death, grief, death of a child, injury.

📚I finished The Ballad of Never After on Monday and started A Curse For True Love this morning - I’m already nearly 50% of the way through! Really enjoying this trilogy, I think it’s built well on the Caraval trilogy and each of the books is staying really well-paced, I’m zooming through them - I’ll be a bit sad it’s over when I’ve finished this book. #books #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #booksbooksbooks #fantasy #fantasybooks #fantasybookseries #fantasybookslover #mayreading

The House of Mirrors - Erin Kelly ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @erinjelly never fails to amaze me. Now, in fairness, I think I liked The Poison Tree more than the average Joe, so I was READY for The House of Mirrors (despite forgetting to post this for nearly a month). It was by and far my favorite of last month. We pick up with Karen, Rex, and Alice years after the showdown between Karen and Biba, and even though we only have Biba through the past, she does not disappoint. This was topsy, turvy, wonderful. ✨ End of Story by A.J Finn ✨ ‘I’ll be dead in three months, come tell my story.’ This is the chilling invitation from Sebastian Trapp, renowned mystery novelist, to his longtime correspondent Nicky Hunter, an expert in detective fiction. Welcomed into his lavish San Francisco mansion, Nicky begins to unravel Trapp’s life story under the watchful eyes of his enigmatic wife and plainspoken daughter. Sebastian Trapp is a mystery himself. And maybe - probably - a murderer. Two decades ago, his first wife and son vanished, the case never solved. Is the master of mystery playing a deadly game? If so, who will be the loser? And when a body surfaces in the family’s garden, they all realize the past isn’t buried - it’s waiting. I’m not going to say too much about this one as it’s @bookscape.books book club book and I don’t want to give anything away! Part of me really enjoyed this one and the other part of me just seemed to be in a confused state for ages! 🤣 The writing confused me sometimes but I feel like it was meant to as it was a psychological thriller? However, I felt like I wanted to know more, I was desperate to keep reading at points (the short chapters helped!) because I just wanted to know where the story was going and who did what. I felt it was a little long winded at times but the twists at the end were brilliant and didn’t see them coming! Thank you @lovelybookswithlaura for the buddy read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 #endofstory #ajfinn #bookreview #book #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #bookcommunity #bookpost #bookishpost #bookphoto #bookpic #mayreads #mayreading #reading #bookscapebooks #bookclub #buddyread

🌴 What I’m Reading Wednesday 🌴 QOTD: Do you think your mood affects the way you rate a book you read? Are you reading anything this Wednesday? How is the weather by you today? Today I am reading: 🌴 One Perfect Couple by @ruthwarewriter ✨ Publication Date: 5.21.24 👏🏼 Thank you to @gallerybooks for my #gifted ARC I was supposed to read this ARC way back when I received it but April was not a great month for me for reading. I was grouchy and not in a good mood with work and life stuff. I know that I gave harsher reviews of the books I read that month and for that I (kinda) feel bad. But, here I am in May with the end of the school year approaching and the majority of my work complete and I am feeling way better about the books I read this month. So, I am giving One Perfect Couple the positive outlook it deserves and I am already invested in the story and cannot wait to see where this one goes. Do you think your mood affects the way you rate a book you read? ☀️ Happy Wednesday everyone! The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 💭Which Christie plot twist shocked you the most? Every Christie book is special in their own way. However, there are a handful that I’ll always recommend people to read because they are so iconic in their own right. Naturally, The ABC Murders is part of that group. It’s one of the first books I always recommend to read for those new to Agatha Christie. As it was May’s official pick for #readchristie2024 , it was great opportunity to reread this mystery classic. Christie really did say “oh you want a page turner? Say no more.” This title, alongside The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, reflect the utter genius and originality of Christie’s writing. I reread this book in just a day because it’s impossible to put down. If you’ve never read this book, you are in for a real treat. I would love to read this book again for the first time. Imagine if they produce a stage adaptation of this book?! The theme for May is the 1930s, so as long as you pick a title published in that decade, you’re good to go. Alternative May reads: - The Mysterious Mr Quinn - And Then There Were None - Cards on the Table - Murder in Mesopotamia - Murder is Easy - Appointment with Death A killer is on the loose and keeps sending Poirot taunting letters. Can the Belgian detective and his friend Hastings find the killer before he strikes again? 🏷 #agathachristie #agathachristiebooks #herculepoirot #poirot #theabcmurders #mayreading #mayreads #crimefiction #murdermystery #whodunnit #queenofcrime #booksandcoffee☕️ #readingchallenge #letstalkaboutbooks #captainhastings #crimefic #literaryclassics #literaryclassic #littlegreycells

Mini Review :: Victim by Andrew Boryga 🖊️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This quick-read, satire follows aspiring writer, Javier, as he discovers the power of victim narratives. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you enjoyed Yellowface, you’ll definitely enjoy this one. If Yellowface was not your jam, I think that you’ll like Victim better. The book actually reminded me more of Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour. The main characters of both books were a bit easier to root for (even though they were still unlikable) and I enjoyed watching them learn how to “play the game”.

Reign by Katharine McGee 👑 Taylor Swift Song: Paris In the stunning conclusion: will Queen Beatrice wake up from her coma? Princess Samantha is still AWOL somewhere with Lord Marshall. Prince Jefferson is now active King. Daphne who tricked Jefferson into dating her again may now not just get her ultimate dream of being a princess but Queen. And Nina who’s trying to get over Jefferson, caught another prince’s eye. How will it all end? I can’t believe I’m finally at the end of American Royals! I’ve loved this series from the very beginning. I got an ARC of the first American Royals back at 2019 Book Con and was instantly hooked! I love all these characters and it’s definitely bittersweet now that it’s over but I think all the characters got very fitting endings. Even when I wasn’t sure how it was going to end! Overall such a fun series! 🩶 THE COMEBACK 🖤 ‘The Comeback’ by Ella Berman is a searing and depressing tale of fame, manipulation and growth which charts child star Grace’s attempt to return to LA following a year in Anaheim exile. As old wounds open, alliances are tested and truths are painstakingly revealed, the book asks whether power can ever be taken from the men who run Hollywood and poses important questions about the blurred lines between misplaced starstruck trust and parental neglect. I loved the narration of this book and the way we saw the flashbacks to Grace’s rise to fame through her reflective eyes. The structure was intriguing and the chapters “after” a pivotal event were both bleak and hopeful. While I struggled to connect to Grace, I certainly felt empathy and was rooting for her against the world. I find it particularly interesting that this novel, republished in paperback last month, was originally conceived prior to the explosion of the “Me Too” movement in showbusiness. I admire how the author kept Grace’s story separate to emphasise the terror, uncertainty and compulsion to keep quiet that plagues the first lone voice, before there are other women’s experiences to take courage from. Overall, this gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 from me and is definitely worth a read. I’m planning to try Ella Berman’s other work based on this! I received a digital copy from the publisher @headofzeus via @netgalley for review consideration. Opinions my own. 🏷️ #bookreview #netgalley #thecomeback

May is almost coming to a close and it has been a slow reading month for me for many reasons. Today is a rainy day and I have started a new character driven family saga that I will share about shortly. Along with a cup of tea and sitting under the covers with wet hair from my late shower, I am taking the day in. How has May been for you reading and life wise? I just finished Such Kindness yesterday. Here are my thoughts: It’s hard not to feel for the main character, Tom Lowe, in Andre Dubus’s new novel Such Kindness. Tom had a good thing going. A wife and young son, a booming business in carpentry, even building a beautiful house for his family. Then the combination of a subprime mortgage and falling off a roof and breaking a hip and becoming addicted to painkillers was enough to tear down much of what he had built. His wife left him, he lost his house and moved into subsidized housing, lost access to his son for a time and was pretty angry about it. He came up with a cheque scheme and invited some new friends to participate in the scam to try and bring themselves up. This is the point where we meet Tom as he is stealing garbage from the banker who sold him the variable mortgage. I’ll admit, the first half of this book wasn’t really doing much for me. I think I was looking for the plot. But as the story continued and we were reminded over and over of the raging fire in his hips and the plywood sofa, I began to get what I think/hope the author was trying to convey. The writing and descriptions were a reflection of Tom’s life and its dreary and mundane day to day scope. The feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that persevered Tom’s existence. Watching this person come to the awareness of his true situation and how his previous mindset did not move him further to any sort of freedom, I began to see the flickers of hope and determination required to lighten the weight of his burdens. The careful arc of Tom’s character felt very realistic and genuine. The side characters in the story all felt necessary and multilayered. While this is not a happily ever after story it showed that hope can exist in the deepest of valleys.
