So this book had to live up to high expectations and it totally did just that. Her story is full of struggles and heartbreak as she makes her way from England to Curaçao to New England. But you root for her as she overcomes all of her struggles and stays true to herself throughout everything. If I had one negative it would be that I got frustrated with her and her daughter, Faith, multiple times through the book. Like, listen to your familiars ladies! Magickú posadnutosť, alebo teda Practical Magic určite poznáte z 90s filmu s Nicole Kidman a Sandrou Bullock. Knižná predloha tohto filmu je síce menej "rozprávková" a dejovo sa dosť líšia, myslím si však, že práve preto sa ju oplatí prečítať - dostanete totiž iný príbeh, než očakávate. . Príbeh sestier Owensových je nielen o rodinných vzťahoch a osudových láskach, ale aj o dospievaní, hľadaní samého seba a vyrovnaní sa s vnútornými démonmi. Mágia je všadeprítomná, a pritom minimalistická, je skôr podstatou bytia než kôpkou zaklínadiel, a v tom je práve jej čaro. Krásne napísané, podmanivé autorkino rozprávanie má síce pokojnejšie tempo, ale tomuto typu príbehov presne svedčí. . Ak sa Vám páčili romány ako sú Posledná žena z rodu Moonovcov, Víno a čary, či Čarovná záhrada (ktorá je touto knihou úplne jasne inšpirovaná), tak skúskte aj Magickú posadnutosť. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 - Hoffman stays true to her genre in her latest, The Invisible Hour🪄 - the magical realism requires the reader to be open-minded but there’s a dreamlike feel to her writing that makes it easy to be! The first half of the novel was brilliant but I lost interest in the second half🤷🏼♀️ Mia was brought up in the Community, an oppressive cult in western Massachusetts. She’s forbidden to have any contact with the outside but she sneaks into the local library and discovers a world of books. She falls in love with Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and feels understood by him. She eventually escapes the Community and eventually finds a find to travel back in time and meet the author who saved her life. The first half of the novel is focused on Mia, which I loved. I was rooting for her and invested in her story but once she traveled back in time to hang out with Mr. Hawthorne, there was a disconnect for me - I knew where that’s where we were headed based on the synopsis but it still felt like it came out of nowhere. I didn’t love how Mia’s maturity and resilience in the first half turned into a sort of obsession with her favourite author - like a fan girl with magical powers😅 It’s a unique story, I just wish the tone of first half carried through! I am having a moment, one influenced by the books I am reading. Photos of the moon, twinkling lights..and daffodils swaying at dusk. What’s that all about? Fans of Alice Hoffman books will understand. Occasionally, or perhaps when the full moon rises, I have a desire to read books in magical realism, magic, witches and historical fiction. Growing up in New England, hanging around Salem, Massachusetts as an impressionable young girl made this curious reader…curiouser. There are no cauldrons hidden in our woods mixing up magical brews….toads are safe! I do appreciate what grows around us and the special properties they have. BOOK REVIEW The Bookstore Sisters by @ahoffmanwriter ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I genuinely really enjoyed this book and it was very emotive. I was expecting with it being a short story that I would not connect to the characters like I did, but maybe because I’m a sister and I have witnessed other people’s family relationships breaking down that it hit me a lot harder. I can relate to the sisters Isabel and Sophie being on different life paths. And I love how the author showed the stubborness of both sisters and how love and grief can bring you together again. ☀️ REVIEW ☀️ I finally finished the “Practical Magic” series. In these four books, you can see the sheer talent that is Alice Hoffman. Every story was emotive, powerful, and incredibly feminist. Even when love can be seen as an antagonist, it’s the most powerful thing we could ever have. This story is set years after “Practical Magic” but this time the ladies have had enough. When more love interests are at risk of the Owens curse, one woman would do anything to protect her man, no matter the cost. Some spoilers ahead: Kylie being the one to decide to end the curse was well handled since she seemed to have a dark edge that finally got explored in this story. She loves her man so much, she’ll use dark magic if she has to. She just wants to be happy without the curse of it all. Shout-out to Sally who put in the work. Her storyline is absolutely phenomenal. Her daughter is the one risking her life, so she steps up to make sure she’s the one who saves her. But along the way, she finds love but is extremely hesitant because this would be the third man she brought into her mess. But, that climactic sequence where Sally does what she does, I was gagged. I was not expecting that at all. It’s so true to her character that she would make a sacrifice as big as that. They could never make me hate you, Sally. You’re the real winner of this story. My only criticism is that every character we’ve met comes back for this one. Which is nice. But characters like Gillian and Vincent (my beloved, I will always love you) don’t get much to do. They’re just there because we need the whole family there. It was the perfect conclusion to this story. All of these characters have been to hell and back, and it’s nice to see them get that piece of heaven. Thank you Alice Hoffman for this extraordinary series, every page from was just a delight. It takes place during the witch hunts of the 1600s and the author was knowledgeable about the history as well as the way women would have behaved and acted in those days. There was just enough magic to make the story mysterious but also enough reality to make it feel credible. There was also a good combination of romance and action - if you know me, you'll know I can't do books that focus 100% on romance and nothing else. When it comes to my female protagonists, I need them to have actual personalities and interests. The two things that took this book down from a perfect read for me were: 1. Toooooo much description of magical recipes. Occasional examples definitely enrich the story but at times I skipped an entire page of cure after cure. Still, that was ok because, as I said, I would just skip over. 2. Not enough logical explanation of why Maria goes searching for John. It just didn't click. She can't even remember John, nor feels anything for him anymore. Additionally, she is constantly telling other women that sometimes men who disappear prefer not to be found, and her friend Adrie tells her the same. She was also happy and financially secure. Lastly, she is in love with Samuel. This random treck across the ocean just felt like a plot hole because of a lack of credible motive. EM’S REVIEW - Practical magic by Alice Hoffman ✨ 🧙 🌹 Did you know the 1998 film Practical Magic is based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name? Because I had no idea until someone recommended the book to me as a cosy read. Owen sisters Sally and Gillian come from a long line of magical women and, after the death of their parents, are sent to live with their unconventional, witchy aunts. The Owens women have always been blamed for everything that goes wrong, and Sally and Gillian are not spared this; they are bullied, ostracised and all they want to do is escape. Once grown up, Sally escapes by marrying and seeking to live a normal life in a town where no one knows of her family. Gillian escapes by running away, entangling herself in questionable relationships and poor decisions. When the sisters are reunited after years apart Sally is widowed, with two daughters, and Gillian is thrice divorced and has accidentally killed her criminal boyfriend. The two sisters conjure a plan to deal with the body and magic ensues. I know and love this story through the movie. However… I didn’t love the book. I felt that the writing skimmed the top of what should have been a magical story - I wanted more character development, more details on their witchy ways and greater time spent telling the story rather than listing it off. It felt rushed, surface level and emotionless. And I’m sorry! I know this is a deeply loved book for so many people, and I possibly missed the boat by not reading it earlier in life - I don’t have the nostalgic attachment. I have a copy of the next book in the series and I might pick it up at a later date, but I’m not in a rush. It’s not often I prefer the movie to the book, but this is one of those times. ☀️ REVIEW ☀️ I finally read the book that started it all. I had high hopes for this one and it did not disappoint at all. This story follows two different tales with two sisters. Gillian and Sally were raised by their aunts and were treated as outsiders growing up. All they wanted to do was run away. Sally got married, and Gillian ran away. Years later, the sisters are reunited under dire circumstances and have to put their differences aside for the greater good. I loved their storyline. They did everything together as children, so Gillian running away really did a number on Sally. But even when Sally was at her worst, Gillian’s words were there to comfort her. Distance be damned, sisterhood comes first. And their reunion is just as emotive. Now it’s Sally’s turn to help Gillian, but it’s difficult when both women regress to their old ways. But, regardless of their grievances for each other, they have each other’s backs no matter what. Antonia and Kylie, daughters of Sally, were raised differently than Sally. Sally didn’t want to repeat history. But with Gillian in the picture, the usually shy Kylie starts to gain more confidence, while beautiful Antonia starts to feel less desirable. Though their bond was strengthened due to problematic men, I felt that it was the weaker of the two. I wish we had gotten more time with them as sisters. Because I love their resolution and their coming together, it felt more like it needed to happen for the plot, and wasn’t as organic as Sally and Gillian. I absolutely loved this book. It shows the absolute resilience and strength of women. When they are at their lowest, they can always look to each other to get back up again. And with some magic sprinkled in, it made for a heartwarming and entertaining read. *The invisible hour van Alice Hoffman* Oh jee, m'n recensie is zo lang dat er geen ruimte is voor een gezellig intro... De Scarlet Letter werd bijna tweehonderd jaar eerder geschreven, maar lijkt het verhaal te vertellen van Mia’s moeder, Ivy, en hun leven binnen de Community – een onderdrukkende sekte in het westen van Massachusetts waar contact met de buitenwereld verboden is. Mia ontworteld zich uiteindelijk aan het leven in de community. Terwijl ze dat doet, realiseert ze zich dat lezen je naar andere werelden kan transporteren of naar jou toe kan brengen, en dat lezers en schrijvers elkaar op mysterieuze manieren beïnvloeden. Als meisje werd Mia verliefd op een boek. Nu wordt ze als jonge vrouw verliefd op een briljante schrijver terwijl ze teruggaat in de tijd. Ik vond de practical magic boeken van Alice Hoffman geweldig. Ik keek ook echt uit naar dit nieuwe boek. Het eerste deel van het verhaal is wat mij betreft heel goed. De auteur schetst een levendig beeld van het leven in de community. Het voelt haast benauwend om over te lezen. In het tweede gedeelte van het verhaal ontsnapt Mia. Dat is waar het voor mijn gevoel allemaal iets vager wordt. Ineens gaat Mia terug in de tijd en ontmoet ze Nathanial Hawtorne. Hoe dit kan wordt niet duidelijk gemaakt. Mia stort zich er helemaal in met geen enkel respect voor het butterfly effect. Mega irritant vond ik dat! Daarnaast zou je toch denken dat terug gaan in de tijd en je favoriete auteur ontmoeten een major gebeurtenis is, die toch zeker meer dan de helft van het boek zou moeten beslaan. Dit is niet het geval. Ik denk dat hooguit een kwart hierover gaat. Zo jammer! Het eerste deel van het boek vond ik echt heel goed. Het tweede, en in mijn ogen toch wel het deel wat het boek eigenlijk had moeten maken, heeft me teleurgesteld. One of my favorite series EVER is the Practical Magic books by Alice Hoffman. I love to reread them around Halloween time (which is saying something, because I don't tend to reread books). Practical Magic is the most famous of the books because of the movie, of course, but I actually liked the last one (The Book of Magic) and the prequel (Magic Lessons) best.
